I love this post because of all the points made here and just how complex Atem and Seto’s friendship is. But they ARE friends and it’s so incredibly frustrating to see Yugi’s friends not only dismiss Seto but also constantly use him. Any time Seto shows up Jonouchi and he go at it and often with a “ugh why are you here?” The majority of the travel the characters do in the show is provided or paid for by Kaiba with the exception of the final trip to Egypt. Seto had the Battle City Zeppelin prepared to have medical staff and equipment and while we can laugh and be like “for a card game?” But it ended up being vital. If not for this Bakura could have died from blood loss, and while the doctors weren’t able to help Jonouchi and Mai (since Shadow Games don’t function based on any science) if it had been a normal health issue they probably would have been. Seto is also responsible for saving Anzu from getting crushed by a friggin cargo container.

And I get it, Seto isn’t exactly a pleasant person. He’s egotistical, he does look down on people weaker than him etc etc but we also can’t forget the kind of life he’s had. The family that’s supposed to love and support you took all of his and Mokuba’s inheritance and then abandoned them at an orphanage. Gozoburo physically and mentally abused them and when Seto became successful who does he deal with mostly? Adults who suck up to him, try to use him or try to usurp him and he’s not dumb he can tell when people are just trying to kiss his ass.

As pointed out in the above post Atem and Seto aren’t the best at communication, so speaking through their rivalry works best for them. Atem is the first person who doesn’t try to kiss up to Kaiba or pick a fight with him. He’s also the first person to set boundaries, if Kaiba -does- start going after the others too hard or says something that Atem disagrees with he calls Seto out on it but he doesn’t start throwing insults at him or trying to pick a fight.

We laugh about how Kaiba is always trying to duel Atem but for Seto that’s the only way he can even spend time with him and as pointed out in the above post it’s how he communicates best with Atem. So it totally makes sense that Seto constantly tries to duel him and never tires of it and why in Battle City he gets annoyed that Atem wants to save his other friends more than duel him. But the thing about even that is if his other friends hadn’t been in danger then Atem totally would have dueled Seto then. When Atem first fights against Slifer and falls to his knees thinking he can’t win Seto calls to him, “Get up, Yugi! If a God stands in your way, knock God down!” (Ep 167 1:52) Seto is the only one here besides Mokuba and he could have scoffed at Atem and walked off but he doesn’t he encourages him. He provides support just the same as all Yugi’s other friends have and do. And yeah he adds the little “only I can defeat Yugi” but that’s just how Seto justifies it to himself and Atem is aware of this.

And while I know this is different from the manga I feel like the scenes with Seto in the final episodes further confirms it.

When everyone returns from Millennium World Seto waits in the room after everyone else has left with Bakura while Atem gathers the Millennium items. He doesn’t say anything, he just stands there and waits and doesn’t go up until Atem gives him the signal that he’s ready to go.

On the ship when they’re traveling to the Tablet of the Afterlife Seto insists on dueling Atem, not because he wants to finally beat him but because he believes he’s the only one in the group who can. He gets upset with Yugi because he better than anyone (except Yugi but give him some slack he doesn’t know Yugi watches Atem duel) knows how good Atem is. So to have the kid who has had Atem fight his battles for him the whole series put his foot down and say he will beat Atem probably to Seto feels like Yugi is insulting Atem and what him being the Duel King means.

“If this is the final duel, I’ll get my revenge by preforming his last rites!” (Ep 220 13:30)

Seto can’t show emotional vulnerability so it has to be “for revenge” but wanting to perform your rival’s funeral rites is silly and we know it. But it’s not for revenge, it’s for Atem. It’s for the friend that Seto can’t bring himself to call a friend to his face. Seto is the only one who doesn’t say Atem should stay but he does his best to offer Atem complete support in this incredibly difficult time for him.

When Yugi insists and Seto offers his cards to Yugi to build a deck and he refuses this isn’t Seto trying to wiggle his way in and make his pride feel better. To me it’s a character trying to support his friend and show that support that he not only struggles to show but can’t because the other friends literally won’t let him when he does try. And I do get why Yugi had to make his own deck from his own cards, I do. But it says a lot that Seto wanted Yugi to use his cards to build the best possible deck to beat Atem.

And finally DSOD. Let’s just look at this picture of Seto after Yugi tells him Atem isn’t in the puzzle anymore.

The poor guy is devastated. This isn’t the face you make when someone tells you you can’t see your rival anymore this is the face you make when sometime tells you your friend died (and they in fact are not coming back.)

I mean just…look at him. He is so hurt. And he is so desperately hoping and wanting Atem to still be in there. He just wants to see his friend and he is hurting because he’s gone and he can’t see him. That’s also why I do love the ending of DSOD where Seto ends up there anyway because just seeing the way Atem smiles when he sees Seto is adorable.

Like Atem isn’t shocked or mad he is just happy to see his duel bestie, happy to see the friend he made completely on his own and that Seto was willing to go so far just to see him. This friendship does not get enough appreciation.

After writing a bit on this post and consulting @egyptiansapphiredragons, I feel confident enough to put some thoughts out there that really get me about the nature and development of Yami Yugi’s and Seto’s relationship - how so much goes entirely unsaid, and how much this defines their relationship. 

So buckle up, because here are way too many words on card game fixated idiots struggling with basic social skills. Or as I will now rather overdramatically call it:

The Friendship That Dare Not Speak Its Name

Development-wise, Battle City and especially Battle Tower is when Yami Yugi and Seto start to tentatively explore the possibility of friendship - it’s what this tournament is all about in terms of their relationship to each other. Before that, the nature of their relationship seemed clear enough, at least to them. They were intrigued by each other’s passion and dueling skills basically since day one, and assumed their status as rivals seamlessly. There is no doubt in their minds that they occupy an important position for the respective other they both take very seriously, and that they have immense respect for each other as duelists. That much is evident to them, and they know and expect the other to understand what all of this entails. Even though especially Seto likes to state that they hold a unique importance to each other as rivals, they never had to clarify any of this - they communicated and established this through their duels. 

But over time, Yami Yugi learned more about the meaning of friendship from Yugi, Jounouchi, Anzu & Co., and what it means to be a better person and improve with the help of friends. He also starts to think more about who he is and used to be, about his destiny and about his own wants and decisions with regards to that. (In many ways, in the story and on a meta level, this is when Yami Yugi develops more into his own distinct character.) And all this in turn causes his relationship to Seto become less well-defined.

When Seto and Yami Yugi work together to find Jounouchi in Battle City (of course only because Seto wants to duel Yami Yugi as fast as possible, as Seto never tires to point out), they discover that they make a great team not only because of their respective dueling skills, but because they click immensely well. It takes a lot of work and bickering, but Yami Yugi introduces Seto to the power of unity during their tag team duel, while Seto shows that he can in fact be a great, reliable dueling partner if he just gets over himself for two seconds - and thus a new question arises.

Are they really just rivals with no trace of friendship? At which point do you consider a rival a friend exactly? What are the criteria?

So uh. Job hunting online for retail positions is definitely an experience. I saw a part time position listing for an office supply store and I think to myself, good! Not a restaurant! I can do office supplies! So I submit the resume/application and then get to the "great, thank you for that! Here are some multiple choice answer questions ranging from word association to number sequences to math problems!"

And I think to myself "great! I'm good with numbers and math and I should be okay associating basic words for this lovely RETAIL POSITION" and then I get the quick and easy practice questions. Wonderfully easy. I've got this. It's neverending and you just have a 10minute time limit to answer as many as possible! No problem!

Then I click "begin" and get slammed with the most ungodly whiplash with the first question being word association about "which of these four words is DIFFERENT" and the options were STRANGLE, PUSH, THROTTLE, and SUFFOCATE.

Hey, uh. Hey retail job. You uh. You okay there? I have some concerns and it was the first question.

can i ask why you don't like xingyun? /gen not a shipper myself but i'm just curious since a lot of chongyun lovers love that ship, i've never seen anyone NOT like it

rant warning by the way, I accidentally got more and more annoyed writing this 😬

im gonna be honest the number one reason is because i see it everywhere

the first effect of this is that content depicting xingqiu and chongyun in a nonromantic manner get tagged as xing/yun, which is annoying to me. you can draw 2 characters together in a nonromantic manner and you don't have to tag the ship guys. it's real it's called being friends. the second effect is that there's never any content with chongyun and Other Characters. people are so hung up on him and xingqiu that chongyun almost never exists without xingqiu. like you might notice i have a tag for chongyun and hu tao (mostly platonic) stuff except that there are only 7-8 posts tagged with that, because although the "exorcist and girl who can see ghosts" dynamic would be so cool, nobody seems to think abt that bc almost everything with chongyun includes xingqiu. this also goes for chongyun and xiangling (who canonically makes him his cooling popsicles) and like random other characters whom he Could interact with and be friends with (ayaka and him is a crack friendship i talked about once, and ofc chongyun and xiao). i hate it. xingqiu got his mr worldwide arc with venti and albedo please depict chongyun alone with other friends (it literally doesn't even have to be romantic). of course, this might just be a separate problem that I'm conflating with the ship, but it annoys me. i'm not focusing on xingqiu's side because although fan content for like idk him and yun jin? him and hu tao? albedo? is also super rare, at least that stuff exists in canon.

the second reason is because xingqiu's prankster attitude towards chongyun annoys me

yeah i love my little shit son but idk, it's just annoying when people make him feed chongyun spicy food, play pranks on him that cost chongyun Something (losing face, wasted time, frustration) idk. i guess i don't like that his condition isn't taken seriously. i don't think it's bad to have friends who pull your leg but at least not in a malicious way? like iirc he's implied to have triggered chongyun's yang energy overflows at least a couple times, and it's like . why. why is it played for jokes the kid literally passes out. "(He) needs more practice. Especially… with eating spicy food, haha." bro please do not !! don't trigger his condition just for kicks! xingqiu's other pranks also annoy me, given that i hate being tricked, so some of this might be projection or smth idk, but like idk you can give him good suggestions for where to demon hunt instead of making up shit and then going after him to make up for any costs. it's just annoying i think chongyun gets annoyed but then later forgives him, as friends are, but i cannot imagine them getting together like this. unless it's toxic idk . if they're friends i can give a pass to the pranks and stuff but in a romantic relationship i don't think i could see this kind of dynamic being a good one

Question: how do you find videos to make into gifs?

oh its different for most of the sites! I use Etsy these days a lot for gifs and I tend to just use the search engine with prompts I think of, and then look through similar products or other people’s collections. for stuff like instagram the search engine doesn’t work in a way that’s easy for me so i usually have to either follow people or just use my for you page (a few time I’ve found reallyyyyy old videos on archived stim blogs to gif but not very often)… and I’ve made a few TikTok gifs but I usually find those through google bcs I don’t have a tiktok… I hope this made sense, I know it’s might not be very helpful… a lot of my sources I stumble upon on accident while looking for other things
