I’ve been lurking on tumblr for years and mostly posting on my side blog, but I wanted to be able to share my A Song of Ice and Fire collages: so welcome!

No words can describe how it felt to read the JaimeCersei chapters in AFFC and realize that They Do Not Like Each Other. Both of them, going on and on about how they're each other's half and two bodies one and soul and they have their first conversation, and it's so obvious they don't like each other. They never have any idea what the other is talking about, don't trust the other, they don't even laugh at the same things.
It's like they're both teenagers in their first ever relationship, it's not really built on familiarity, mutual respect, and love, but proximity, attraction, and romantic ideals. And you go out with your highschool boyfriend and you have fun because it's fun to have a boyfriend and you cry when he breaks up with you but by the time you're in college you forget what his last name was, the classes you shared with him and that's fine.
But Jaime and Cersei don't do that. Their bodies grow up, but they don't. And they stay in a juvenile relationship that was never meant to exist, and wonder why they're so unhappy all the time.

ASOIAF/Game of Thrones Reference Guide
The world of A Song of Ice and Fire is incredibly complex with hundreds of characters, towns, houses, and sigils. Sometimes it can be hard to keep track of it all. Here are a few resources I reference when my memory lapses. These are especially helpful if you’re new to the series.
TIMELINES»
Detailed timeline of events both major and minor sorted by month, date, and year. Also includes distances by ship and road, road travel rates, and a ship speed calculator. (This is my personal favorite as it is extremely and amazingly detailed)
Animated timeline map
Historical timeline of major pre-ASOIAF events
CHARACTERS + HOUSES»
Detailed character list (major & minor characters)
Sigil list
House words list
Major Houses + Minor Houses
Family Trees of Major Houses
Maps»
World of ASOIAF (w/ character tracking)
List of important locations
Misc»
Religion
Medieval Dictionary (includes descriptions of armor , weapons, and parts of a castle)

Your last chapter review is really great, and quite long too. But on Daario, I have to disagree: his all over the top description can give nice results when drawn out. I´m thinking especially of Steamey´s art of him, that you can find on a wiki of ice and fire. It really looks great! Amok and Borja Pindado did well as well. :)
frHere’s the problem...
A lot of those artistic depictions of Daario aren’t actually following his description from the text. Let’s take Steamey’s portrait:
That’s one dangerous, piratical-looking dude. The problem is? That’s not what Daario Naharis actually looks like. If we go back to the text, we learn that Daario wears:
“all shades of yellow; a foam of Myrish lace the color of butter spilled from his collar and cuffs, his doublet was sewn with brass medallions in the shape of dandelions, and ornamental goldwork crawled up his high leather boots to his thighs. Gloves of soft yellow suede were tucked into a belt of gilded rings, and his fingernails were enameled blue.”
That’s pretty different from this rather dashing Sinbadesque outfit.
Borja’s portrait is a bit more “authentic”...
...but even here, he’s cheating to make it work. For example, Daario’s moustaches are died blue to fit the rest of his hair, because if Borja went with the textual moustaches “painted gold,” they’d disappear in the skin tone of his face - resulting in a very odd look indeed. The clothing is closer, but Borja confines the lace to the cuffs instead of including it at the throat as well, and kept it white for visual contrast rather than making it “the color of butter.” He also keeps Daario’s nails their natural color, rather than having them “enameled blue.”
The more significant issue, to me, is the way that Borja is using lighting - this is Daario lit by candlelight, which the eye expects to make everything look yellow - to mellow out the overall package and make it less eyewatering.
As we might expect, Amok’s version is probably the most book accurate, but the result is still pretty ridiculous (the beard especially looks like something you’d absolutely need hairspray or sculpting mousse to work):
I mean, even here, Amok loses his nerve halfway down the gold moustache and puts brown (rather than yellow) gloves over his hands so we don’t have to see the cuffs and the nails. Finally, I know it’s something of a picayune point, but that relatively discrete bit of lace at the neck (which at least is the right color) doesn’t exactly come across as a “foam...spill[ing]” - what Daario’s got in the text is a full 19th century fop’s lace cravat, in yellow.
This is what I mean by the mind having a really hard time holding all of the textual details together at once.

So, this weekend i've seen this youtube video youtube(.)com/watch?v=dZdbpfcxfSk where the youtuber creates a sketch up model of Winterfell following the descriptions of the books. And it comes up as a very enormous castle (which we already knew, but holy shit, I didn't imagine it quite as big). If Winterfell was this size, how many people it could actually hold? And how many guards it would take to garrison it? Thanks!
Yeah, Winterfell is big. Not quite Harrenhal big, but still I make it about 62,500 square meters.
If we look at this list of the ten largest castles in the world, Winterfell is about the same size as Prague Castle (which I have visited, and can testify is absolutely enormous).
In terms of the size of its garrison, the largest castle in the world, the castle of Malbork (or Marienburg, for all you Warhammer Fantasy fans) had a garrison that maxed out at 3,000 men, and it was about twice the size of Prague Castle. So call it 1,500 men?
Calculating how many people the castle could hold is rather difficult, because medieval knights would usually have quite a bit of a “tail,” what with squires and servants and the like. I’m going to do a very crude estimate based on some numbers from the Great Siege of Malta and say there might be as many as 9,000 people living in Winterfell itself.

Sansa in the godswood, by Jonathan Burton, for The Folio Society’s illustrated collector’s edition of A Clash of Kings
By the time she reached the godswood, the noises had faded to a faint rattle of steel and a distant shouting. Sansa pulled her cloak tighter. The air was rich with the smells of earth and leaf. Lady would have liked this place, she thought. There was something wild about a godswood; even here, in the heart of the castle at the heart of the city, you could feel the old gods watching with a thousand unseen eyes. Sansa had favored her mother’s gods over her father’s. She loved the statues, the pictures in leaded glass, the fragrance of burning incense, the septons with their robes and crystals, the magical play of the rainbows over altars inlaid with mother-of-pearl and onyx and lapis lazuli. Yet she could not deny that the godswood had a certain power too. Especially by night. Help me, she prayed, send me a friend, a true knight to champion me… She moved from tree to tree, feeling the roughness of the bark beneath her fingers. Leaves brushed at her cheeks. Had she come too late? He would not have left so soon, would he? Or had he even been here? Dare she risk calling out? It seemed so hushed and still here… “I feared you would not come, child.” Sansa whirled. A man stepped out of the shadows, heavyset, thick of neck, shambling. He wore a dark grey robe with the cowl pulled forward, but when a thin sliver of moonlight touched his cheek, she knew him at once by the blotchy skin and web of broken veins beneath. “Ser Dontos,” she breathed, heartbroken. “Was it you?” “Yes, my lady.” When he moved closer, she could smell the sour stench of wine on his breath. “Me.” He reached out a hand. Sansa shrank back. “Don’t!” She slid her hand under her cloak, to her hidden knife. “What… what do you want with me?” “Only to help you,” Dontos said, “as you helped me.” –A Clash of Kings, Sansa II

The absolutely wonderful @nire-the-mithridatist commissioned the phenomenally talented @knifeears to create this art for my birthday earlier this month.
Nire knows about my fondness for wet men (you think it was an accident that Jaime fell into the harbour in one of my fics? ;) so she took that as a starting point and ran with the concept - and this was the result.
That SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound you can hear in the distance? Yeah, that’s me. I LOVE these. I’m going to be staring at them for a loooong time.

It’s no secret that George R.R. Martin likes inventing songs for his imaginary realm, and as someone who loves worldbuilding, I am duly grateful. Here’s a compilation ( though by no means a complete one ) of all the in-universe ASOIAF songs that I could find. Feel free to reblog and add any that I have missed. If you haven’t finished the books yet and want to know more about what these songs are about, see THIS PAGE.
