BOOK REVIEW: Rebel Girl - Kathleen Hanna
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"Maybe that was what third wave girls were about: speaking back to power with sounds that didn't always make sense."
Tumblr media
Kathleen Hanna: a feminist punk icon and the lead singer of three quintessential riot grrrl bands. Her memoir Rebel Girl, named in honour of the feminist anthem by Bikini Kill, is a true account of the riot grrrl era from one of the founding mothers of it. It's also a raw and brutally honest tale of trauma, loss and illness, detailing the ups and downs of feminism and considering the nature of the human condition. Kathleen tells her story in her own words - comedic and witty, as always, whilst still packing a punchy message.
Detailed and not holding back on even the most painful of specifics, Kathleen Hanna's first book is a powerful tale of female empowerment and the impact of the punk movement on women. Kathleen tells all: from her childhood to Bikini Kill to living life with her husband, Adam, and son Julius, and every part of her life story is just as interesting and important as the rest.
Tumblr media
Alongside the book disclosing truths about Kathleen's life, it sheds light on the problems of the original riot grrrl concept. This includes a lack of intersectionality and a 'cisterhood' mindset (which excluded trans people from the movement). These issues are gracefully addressed and suggestions are made as to how we can remove these issues from the feminist movement today.
A must read for all feminists - Rebel Girl is the compelling and candid story of one woman and the impact she had on so many others.

Wait no you're totally right, seeing Briar and raven interact more could've been awesome cause of that, trauma bonding✨️ /hj
WHAT I'M SAYINGGGG!! They're both VERY antagonistic towards each other for much of the beginning of the show (WAYYY more than they are to other characters, like Raven doesn't even treat Apple the way she treats Briar when she's mad at her imo) and I really believe it's cause their hurt comes from the same place. They're both trying to cope with their place in the system and neither think the way the other is doing it is right. AND THEN, when Briar drops the Storybook down the well and it seems like the two might finally be on the same page, RAVEN DECIDES TO SIGN!!! Like imagine being Briar, I couldn't even imagine the amount of betrayal she felt in that moment. Especially seeing how happy Apple became with Raven's decision while she knew that Apple didn't approve of her rejection of her own destiny, but she didn't want to lose her friendship so she went to Wonderland anyway and sees Raven sign the book! The book she said she never would! Sees her break the one vow that Briar based her life on, sees her go back on what she said on Legacy Day to keep the book from Courtly, and what a gut punch. You have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing indeed

Girl Rebels
From what age are we allowed to change the world?
.
Firstly, I wish to thank @titancomics for reaching out and sending a copy of Girl Rebels in exchange for a review and to be a part of their book tour. Take a peek below to see what the book is about and my thoughts!
.
Follow the stories of six incredible women in modern history, including Greta Thunberg, Emma ‘X’ Gonzales, and Malala Yousafzai, among others.
Six girls, five empowering adventures. From climate activism to fighting for education and gun control, each story delves deep into the personal struggles and triumphs of remarkable individuals.
.
My thoughts:
This is one of the most inspirational graphic novels I've ever read. Out of the six stories, I was familiar with three and learned new things about these extraordinary young women.
The diversity of the stories with the art styles shine off the page. There is a lot of joy captured along with the devastation of what these girls were put through. In Yusra Mardini's story, there is a small panel of art that brought tears to my eyes, as one moment it is a normal day in your life and then next something catastrophic changes everything.
Yes, I cried a lot in this book. Tearing up at a little Greta Thunberg and her struggles before the protesting crossed her mind. Emma & The Parkland Kids took me right back to when the news broke.
What struck me throughout the book is that these experiences have happened in the timeliness of my life. I remember the story of Malala Yousafzai, how suddenly the image of this girl was everywhere and finding out what happened to her. A teenager myself at the time and being horrified to find out that young girls being educated in another part of the world was forbidden and could get you killed.
I adore nonfiction with chapters that are dedicated individually and give complete focus. I feel that the artists chosen to represent the woman featured were a perfect fit. There is tragedy in the pages, but the power, hope, and determination overcome it all. This left me so emotional and proud. Knowing how far these women have come and what can be achieved at a young age proves that a little change can lead to better futures.
