“If only I knew,” you sigh, angry that you forgot that Junseo was already here when you started to study. He was always ahead and now he will be the first to leave behind college life and become a truly normal person. “I would have brought stuff to make this more memorable.”

I have some things to say about new merch and jo merch in general so this is gonna be a litrle longer post and actually I think I should cange my semiotics theme (which is already about jo) about how bad their merch design is.

First of all little disclaimer: this is all my humble opionion based on what I learned in my one year of being graphic design student and an artist and designer on the internet for last 4-5 years. Before going to uni I learned most of about art and graphic design stuff by reading books and watching tons of yt videos. Second of all this critic is just coming from place of love for this band because I see so mucb potential and they could do some amazing merch designs if they give it a chance and I am fully aware how expensive the touring is and why they had to cut the quality of merch products.

So far my favorite jo band merch designs are cds (that probably required some designer to make), condoms (because they are really funny, genius, nicely designed and unique merch that fit the vibe of the band and matches their songs as well) and the new tshirt from last merch drop (which design is made by one slovenian fanartist : link.

Main reason that made me want to speak up is seeing that this merch drop will only have 100 products (my friend said that could mean 20-ish shirts per size) which how big this fandom has gotten in last year is pretty really dam limited. For a limited product I am really disappointed and I hoped for more. For such a limited product that design is the most default design they could have gone for and I am so sorry for Damon because his work is goregous, amazing, breathtaking and I could talk about it for ages and how inspiring it is but this shirt design isn't serving.

If they wanted to do bare minimum of design with those 5 images here is some of my ideas (unfortunately I don't have time to visually show them to yall on a mock ups because of finals that I should be studying for instead of writing this so try to imagine what I am trying to say and demonstrate). First is just simple instead of white choose black shirt or even better a thisrt. If you want it to go a stepp further is using their name logo font (font name is Avaline btw if anyone wants to download and use it for their designs :))) and either put it how they did when they promoted the everybody's waiting or to write idk therapy sessions or anything related to the band or it can even be some inside joke.

Something like this would make design just a bit more intersting but still bare minimum but amazing for regular merch. If they want to go a step further but want to keep the long sleeves (this idea was suggested by few people I talked too) they could put pictures vertically on the sleeves. I would find it a bit cooler if it is on the right sleeve out-side and then they put their band logo (the heart one) on the left side of the shirt where people's hearts normally are.

After exams I would definitely like to try to make some designs and just limit myself with this 5 pictures and play with typography and photoshoop to make something interesting.

Another I want to mentioned is how in my humble opinion if you are gonna sell limited edition either make it really pretty or good quality or really cursed and funny with inside jokes.

I think people (and me first) would eat tshirts (but also other merch designs) with some cursed designs or just texts that say "sparklative" or "slay pose" or "I feel SloveNACE" (this 3 were suggested by amazing people in tumblr discord server) or even let Jan photoshoop their faces on most random picture. This 5 guys with their gen z humour could make and do some hilarious merch like how amazing idea the condoms are.

Last thing I want to say is how many amazingly talented fans are. I mean even Damon was so shocked and moved by amount of talent and art made in this community. Furthermore I know (some of them as online friends and mutuals, others as just artists from same fandom) who are also either graphic design students or they work in art/graphic design/entertainment fields and some of them (including myself) would be so happy to even make few merch designs or art for them for freee or for a ticket for their show. Personally I would die from happiness if I get a chance to work with my favorite band that inspires me so much everyday to the point people at my uni think I am from Slovenia and know slovenian because of how much I include them in my uni work and how much fanart and designs I made because of them in last 6 months.

I just think there is so much potential guys might not be aware of (Idk honestly because who knows what is going on backstage in their lives). But yeah they could have even asked Damon to help them with composition of the pictures on that shirt or even hire Racik to make some pretty art or any fanartist honestly. I could probably go more in depth and give more ideas how to improve merch designs the cheapest and best way as possible but still trying to keep the quality good as it needs to be. I know there is still gonna be people fighting for this shirts and people are still gonna buy their merch but just it hurts my art/designer soul seeing this bad designs when there is so much potential and they have amazing fans and amazing crew and they work with so many talnted people and they themselves are so talented and their music inspired so many and so much.

Jo March: The Pragmatist

One of the most common complaints I hear about Little Women is the way it ends. Many people think that Jo stifles her creativity and gives up on her writing in order to marry Professor Bhaer, which isn't true. Jo writes a very successful book in one of the sequels, Jo’s Boys, but let's set that to the side because what I really want to discuss is what Jo actually thinks of the writing she’s doing in the latter half of Little Women. 

In Part I of Little Women, we see the type of writing that Jo does prior to selling her work. In “A Merry Christmas,” the family puts on The Witch’s Curse, an Operatic Tragedy, which seems to be a Shakespearean melodrama. In “Jo Meets Apollyon,” the book Amy burns in anger is “half a dozen little fairy tales.” In “The P.C. and P.O.,” Jo writes a comedic poem and a lament for one of Beth’s cats. Finally, in “Secrets,” Jo submits a tragic romance to The Spread Eagle (one assumes that this name was less funny when Little Women was originally published in 1868.) The Spread Eagle doesn’t pay beginners, so we can assume that everything written up until this point is the type of writing Jo does for herself when there’s no pressure to make changes to please an editor in order to get a paycheck. 

Part II begins with the chapter “Gossip,” which catches us up on what’s been happening over the past three years. Jo is now a regular contributor to The Spread Eagle who receives a dollar for each story. She refers to them as “rubbish,” so she doesn’t seem particularly proud of the writing she’s doing, but she’s in the process of writing a novel she hopes will win her fame and prestige. 

In “Literary Lessons,” Jo observes a boy reading a newspaper story illustrated with a dramatic scene of “an Indian in full war costume, tumbling over a precipice with a wolf at his throat” and two men stabbing each other while a terrified woman flees the scene. When the boy offers to share, Jo agrees more because she likes the boy than because of an interest in the story. The story is sensation fiction, which Jo privately thinks is trash anyone could have written. However, when she learns the author is making a good living from her stories, Jo decides to try her hand at this new style of writing. She submits the story to a contest the newspaper is running and wins $100. Jo uses the money to send Beth and Marmee to the seashore. She’s proud of her ability to earn money to help her family, so she continues to write these kinds of stories since they are lucrative. 

She later finishes her novel and sends it to multiple publishers, only one of whom is interested, and only if there are major cuts and revisions. After conflicting advice from her family, she decides to make the requested changes, which earns her $300 and some very mixed reviews that lead Jo to respond, “Some make fun of it, some over-praise, and nearly all insist that I had a deep theory to expound, when I only wrote it for the pleasure and the money. I wish I’d printed it whole or not at all, for I do hate to be so misjudged.” 

In “Calls,” Jo reluctantly joins Amy to return calls to their neighbors with generally disastrous results. One incident involves Jo receiving a compliment on her writing. 

Any mention of her “works” always had a bad effect upon Jo, who either grew rigid and looked offended, or changed the subject with a brusque remark, as now. “Sorry you could find nothing better to read. I write that rubbish because it sells, and ordinary people like it.”

This passage makes it very clear that Jo isn’t proud or fond of what she is writing. The reception to her novel combined with the money she can make from sensation fiction has changed Jo’s primary motivation for writing. She is no longer doing it for the love of writing or because she’s pursuing her dreams. She’s trying to make money to help out her family.

I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. We all have periods in our life when we take a job that we aren’t extremely excited about because it will allow us to achieve something that is more important to us. However, it’s a different narrative than is usually spun about Jo who is frequently depicted as continually working towards her dream. There is a role in Castles in the Air that fits that narrative. It’s called the Striver, but I don’t think that’s the role that Jo has. Instead, Jo is the Pragmatist, which is a role about setting aside your dreams for the moment because you have other responsibilities. Both are interesting conflicts, but they lead to very different conclusions when it comes to Jo’s story! 

With that in mind, let’s take a look at “Friend,” which follows Jo in New York. She’s now writing for a newspaper called the Weekly Volcano, which has required Jo to make so many changes to her stories that she decides to have her work published anonymously. That certainly wouldn’t be a good career move if she was truly trying for fame! She’s also come to greatly respect a man staying at her boarding house named Professor Bhaer. One day, he makes a comment about a newspaper that publishes sensation stories like the ones Jo is writing. Her response is telling:

Jo glanced at the sheet, and saw a pleasing illustration composed of a lunatic, a corpse, a villain, and a viper. She did not like it; but the impulse that made her turn it over was not one of displeasure, but fear, because, for a minute, she fancied the paper was the “Volcano.” 

Professor Bhaer notices her look and guesses the truth, but instead of letting her know this, he decides to gently explain his reasoning. After this, Jo goes back to reread the stories she has been writing and decides to burn them. Far from stifling her creativity, Professor Bhaer is the one who sees that Jo is ashamed of her writing and reminds her that she is capable of more.

Outside of Elijah/Klaus (cause there was absolutely 0 reason both of them died), which character in all of TVDU do you think had the most unnecessary/dumb death?

Honestly Klaus and Elijah aren't even in my top. Yes, both of them dying was dumb, but there are so many other death's that were more unnecessary. At least Elijah and Klaus made it to the end of TO.

Some honorable mentions: Hayley, Tyler, Gia, Josh, Enzo, Jo, Lexi, Sophie, Eve, Jesse, Aaron, Aya, Jackson, all of the hybrids, Carol, Henry, Celeste (first time), Genevie (first time and kind of second time). I'm sure there are more.

But my most unnecessary/dumb death is Cami O'Connell.

There was zero reason for her to die and it was because she wasn't meant to die. I firmly believe she was meant to be the school psychologist in Legacies. It would have made so much sense for her to be there for Hope after Hope lost so much of her family. It also would have allow a woman on the show to have a happy ending that wasn't centered around a man. Her happy ending would have been watching over Hope and helping all of the supernatural children, fulfilling her family's destiny.

Cami still had so much of a story left to tell. She was so young and full of promise. She lost her entire family due to the supernatural world and then was forced into it herself. If anyone in TO is a parallel to Elena, it is Cami. Her family legacy was so entrenched in the supernatural that it was only a matter of time before she herself was pulled into it.

Even her death made no sense. Lucien wanted to hurt Klaus for 'stealing' Aurora from him, but at that point, Lucien had the ability to kill Klaus. Sure, maybe he wanted him to suffer, so why not go after Hope? She was out in the bayou essentially unprotected (let's be honest, what could Mary have done?).

Even if we accept Lucien wanted to make it even by taking away Klaus' love, how did they not save her? Like two days later the entire Mikaelson gang is bitten and Freya just magically thinks of a way to freeze them and save them all? They couldn't have thought of that a little quicker? It's funny how they always manage to think of life saving magic when the plot/Mikaelsons require it, but there's no other options when it comes to sacrificing other characters.

Even if we accept that she died, they really didn't even make an effort to bring her back? Davina was able to be brought back from the dead after her soul was shredded. I know the other side was gone at that point, but let's not pretend the show didn't just bring back characters with very little rhyme or reason. The Mikaelsons didn't even attempt to find a way to bring her back.

And no one even say it was to help Klaus' character development. I hate when women are killed to further a man's development. It was clear in the writing that Klaus still needed Cami for his development. He was just at the brink of trying to be a better person, he was nowhere near done. We can clearly see this in the amount of scenes Hayley becomes ooc in order to be Cami for Klaus. Or Caroline coming in season 5, which made no sense, was clearly meant to be Cami.

Cami was an O'Connell and this meant something in New Orleans. People who claim her character was just a love interest were not watching. Her character was going to unite New Orleans. Not Hayley, not Hope, and definitely not the Mikaelsons. Every faction adored her. Marcel and Vincent loved her and would have done anything to keep her safe. The Mikaelsons each loved her outside of her relationship with Klaus. She would have always been a mother figure to Hope, no matter what her relationship was. Hayley loved her as well. We don't see her interact with the wolves too much but that's because they were largely forgotten in the writing. But every faction loved her and respected her. Her legacy was fixing the war in New Orleans. Which I love the writers just kind of dropped and everything magically go better when the Mikaelsons left, even though the war had been going on longer than the Mikaelsons were there.

The writers had not planned to kill her off but because of the toxicity of the fandom, they killed her off. This is just bad writing. They writers often cared more about ratings than the actual art of story telling and the show suffered because of it.

Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay(18+!)

• review: this was a solid read. nothing incredible, but definitely better than some of the other crap i've read this year lol. i enjoyed the dynamic between the fmc - a dyslexic chef named sam - and the mmc - a librarian named ben - and the interesting relationship between someone who hates to read and someone who's life revolves around books. honestly i was really interested to see how this played out between the two of them, but like one week into them fooling around he begins to read a book aloud to her and the conflict is magically solved. sam just loves audiobooks now and i wish the author had done more with that. both sam and ben have goals they're striving to reach and i love that ben is able to see his through to the end, but the reader is kind of left wondering about sam's and i would have loved for that threat to have been tied up, but overall this was a cute read. my only real issue with this story was the quality of writing. there were some parts that were super cringe and were clearly written by a millennial emulating the 'how do you do fellow kids' meme that i could've gone without... anyway. i really enjoyed the relationship exploration between sam and her budding teenager brother. after not being in each others lives for a bit, i thought their bonding over the summer was adorable :) would've loved to read a book just about them tbh. neither of the main characters were the kinds of characters to write home about, but overall i did enjoy the progression of their relationship. just kind of a middle-ground novel.

i could always write literal essays on your work i swear to god but these two works this month really got to me as per usual. the first mickames one shot for james canon bday was so freaking adorable. i had literal butterflies in my stomach like i was there on the date with them... despite the urgency of the time crunch, which you did exellent in making it seem like it was somehow slow and fast at the same time, god i read this like three times over. mickey and james are just my favorite ;-;!! and blood diamond always hitting in the feels of course... this one in particular really got to me though. the combination of brooke's annoyance with james the last few chapters really came to a head here at the hair salon. he's just a kiddo!! let him play in peace!! and then her figuring out a way to potentially exploit his singing talent... i'll wring her neck i swear. as always tysm for sharing and tagging me in your works 😭 i could read them forever and ever and ever <3

oh LORD such incredible updates to this sweet story. these chapters always pack such a punch! i expect nothing less from kames fan #1... im obsessed with the continued relationship between katie and kendall in pt 4. btrtv lacks so heavy on their sibling-ness so i always love seeing it expanded on in fic! and JAMES AND KENDALL GOING OFFICIAL AOAJFOBOBGA i had knots in my stomach! you've also so clearly set up stakes and kendall's future fears it's so genuine and just real it hits so hard. pt 5 with brooke had me almost throwing my phone at the wall if im being honest. the way she spoke to kendall was bonechilling and i'm nervous yet excited for their future together <3 never stop kamesing the world needs it so so sos sooo bad !!!

hi <3 welcome to the reading round up! i love your story sm i'm so grateful to be here for the very beginning of kenonnie and their sweet relationship. ronnie is such a cool character! there is so much depth and dimension to them and i love that every single chapter we learn something new about her!! from her relationship with addy and callie (who i also ADORE and can't wait to learn more about) to his struggles with his father's health... god... the amount of thought you put in is clear and i'm just astounded! the second chapter was also super cool too; i love how you took existing characters and tweaked their relationship so we could learn more about how you view the two of them. i'd never thought to write something with just kelly and rebecca - it's so inventive, just like the (spoliers lol) other chapters you've published since <3 tysm for sharing your writing with us, i'm so excited to see ronnie's journey progress!!!

i also wanna say one of my favorite things abt Amy is that she's a character whose role in a misogynistic society is acknowledged and she's not demonized for leaning into it. when laurie calls her shallow and silly for caring about her marriage prospects, she points out that this is the sort of thing women have to do in their society, and unlike laurie, she doesn't really get a choice to do whatever she wants. i feel like so many period characters are demonized for leaning into the feminine gender roles of the time, but it was weirdly refreshing to see Amy depicted as a sensible character with agency and interests but still playing within her defined roles? and we also had Jo for the "screw the rules" character, so it's not like Amy's depicted as "the only way", too. idk. i just like Amy. I like all the characters. Little Women was my grandma's favorite book so I grew up reading it a lot.

Exactly. Both Jo and Amy are trying to survive in the patriarchy one way or another: rebellion, conformity. They occasionally mock each other for their respective views, but they are literally children in Book 1. In fact, if you notice, Amy is always held equally culpable in the mishaps as Jo is, and they are foils.

During the book burning, Amy is given the silent treatment and not indulged or petted by Meg and Marmee, rather all of them comfort Jo and tell off Amy bluntly. However, Marmee points out Jo's anger and ability to nurse a grudge can be detrimental to her own emotional health, and after Jo almost lets her sister drown, Marmee helps her manage her uncontrollable emotions. According to fandom, that's Marmee letting Amy off the hook and blaming it all on Jo. Well.

The similarities continue. In their personal newsletter, Jo and Amy are the two sisters who are marked with the report of "Bad/Middling" to contrast with Meg and Beth. Both of them get similar reprimands from their father but also commended for working on themselves in the Christmas reunion.

Both of their arcs are very similar: to be economically independent but also artistically accomplished. (But somehow, Jo's dreams are considered worthier than Amy because???? I don't like to say it, but just because she dedicates a novel to Beth doesn't mean all her craft had a higher purpose than Amy's paintings ever did. That is a very mean, selfish and low way of characterising two sisters, which unfortunately fandom culture has a habit of doing ref Sansa Arya etc.)

Often when Amy attempts to establish herself in society, Jo mocks her, refuses to help her or makes her a laughing stock (ref: lobster party fete in Book 2, the social calls chapter in the same). I point this out because the 21st century Little Women fans seem to think Amy was this evil conservative woman clamping a corset and primping her hair (she was 17) while Jo was marching with the suffragettes. The truth is they were both very young and doing their best, while messing up or being cruel in the way siblings can.

Besides, when Amy gets to visit Europe instead of Jo, Jo is the one who actively sabotages her own changes by being ridiculously rude and frankly insulting in her speech towards the whole idea of going to France (she makes derogatory remarks about their language and culture and expresses 0 interest in participating in any of it). If anybody feels those were her girlboss feminist non-conforming moments, I sincerely sympathize with them and hope they feel better soon. As it was, Marmee shows sympathy at Jo being left out of the trip but also takes none of her shit when she says Amy had it easy, and tells her firmly "Girl, you kind of deserved it. Now get up and be happy for your sister". And she is!! Unlike Saoirse Ronan's grumbling, bad tempered, condescending act in the 2021 film. But according to fandom it's Amy getting whatever she likes while Jo is paid dust.

If one argues that Jo was punished and had to 'settle' by marrying the man she loved, writing a successful novel and opening an unconventional academy, becoming an educationist etc, then I can also argue that Amy was punished and had to 'settle' by making her forfeit her passion for paintings, simply because she wasn't good enough (even though canon suggests otherwise) and ended up married to a rich man, living on his inheritance and becoming a patroness of arts instead of an active, independent artist.

Then remind me again, how did Louisa May Alcott show favoritism towards Amy? Because she married the rich, handsome guy and not the plainer, older emotionally mature and kind professor? So the readers agree it's all about money and looks at the end eh? So much for non confirming feminist mindset!

Little Women Inspirations: Friedrich Schiller (With Hejar Sinem) Part 2

Niina: Exactly, the proposal scene, it is often romanticized, you don't really see how uncomfortable Jo feels that in the book, the way he's treating her, that's a problem. His apology in the book makes a lot of sense, because Laurie himself realized that it wasn't a right thing to do.

Sinem: I also think it's important that Louisa May Alcott did have Laurie apologize, it is also an ideal way of showing that men can change and better, and that they have to acknowledge it. I think any other author would just gloss over it, but I think it is very important that Louisa May Alcott didn't gloss over it, and I think it's also important that Louisa May Alcott did have Jo uncomfortable with Laurie being so possessive of her, because I mean, who wouldn't feel uncomfortable when their friend would force them to do something they didn't want?

Niina: Yes, it's interesting, because in later chapter, I think it's Under the umbrella, Friedrich says that he thinks he knows Jo very well, and that's why he does not force himself to her. Then we have Laurie, who has known Jo since he was 15, and then he tries to force himself on Jo, and you would think that it would be the opposite.

Sinem: Yes, that is very much true, and I often have to say, I really love how Friedrich was introduced in New York, and I love how great his character was in this chapter, because when he comes to Orchard House to visit Jo, he at first doesn't want to go inside, because she's busy and all that stuff, but then he stays, because Jo looks at him in such a way, and because she just throws him into the house, he doesn't change for Jo, he doesn't pretend he is somebody else when he talks to Jo's parents, he is still himself, and I also love that in this chapter, he looks at Laurie a great deal, and he also looks at Jo a great deal, and the fact that Jo is like, she has to keep her eyes focused, because her eyes wonder towards him, her eyes work constantly, which is very funny.

Niina: There's something about him that speaks right to her soul, it reminds me of that part in New York, when he's speaking about religion, and then in that chapter, he really becomes Jo's hero, so there's something similar that happens here.

Sinem: Yes, like I said, I really love Friedrich as a character, and I also love the fact that Louisa May Alcott didn't just like gloss over the fact that Friedrich was visiting. It was a very important chapter, and it also let the audience know Friedrich even better, because he was there for Jo, but he wasn't only nice to Jo, he was nice to everybody around her, because that is who he is.

Niina: You are pretty well educated when it comes to Louisa May Alcott. Would you like to tell a little bit, how you got introduced to Little Women and her writings?

Sinem: It happened like this. I wanted to read something in English, and I was like, why not try some classic out. It was the first time I kind of discovered it, but there were a few bad reviews, so I wasn't sure, and I couldn't get a reading extract of it, so I thought to myself, let's wait a bit, but then when I got to the shop to look for some English book, there it was again, and it was like the whole version of it, several hundred pages, and I read a bit into it, and I was like, okay, this is the novel I really want to read, so I started reading and I fell in love with the writing, and then I read her other novels as well, and the one that also had a real big impact on me, besides Little Women was also ”Work”, because it is such an incredible novel. About Little women, the funny thing with it is, Meg is character similar to my aunt. Meg is really how I always imagined my own aunt to be, I have two of them, the older one especially, reminded me of her, and I have to say, I also love the fact that Louisa May Alcott included Henry David Thoreau to all of ther novels. I think that is where they start off. He is in every novel of hers, and then there are people who claim that she didn't love him, but the fact is like, okay, if she only included Henry David Thoreau kind of character, for example, into Little Women, then maybe we could say, okay, she didn't love him, but it is clear that she was very much in love with him, or had a crush on him, because that kind of character is in all of her novels, Mac. David, I wouldn't say Tom in An Old-Fashioned Girl is completely like him, but when he matured, he also kind of becomes that kind of archetype, and I think it is really important.

Niina: I think Adam in Moods is also based on Henry David Thoreau.

Sinem: Yeah, right, I really forgot him.

Niina: Then there's the German man in the Queen of Hearts, he's based on Henry David Thoreau, so the list goes on and on. At some point maybe in this podcast, I will go through all of these Henry David Thoreau archetypes. Yes, you are correct, he appears in literal disguises in pretty much every single Louisa May Alcott novel or short story.

Sinem: Yes, and also in I believe in Long Fatal Love Chase, I think that's what it's called. In that one, Henry David Thoreau kind of archetype character is, I think, Father Ignatius. I can't remember his name, but I think that was it, and he really reminded me of Friedrich, but I have to say, I still love Friedrich more, because I think to me, out of all the Henry David Thoreau archetypes, I think Friedrich is the one who speaks mostly to my heart, probably because he's German and because he can talk German.

I always found it nice when she speaks German words. His language has English phrases and German sentences, I'm like, I can understand everything he says, and it is so cute.

Niina: Yes, and it's adorable, because in Little Women he is still trying to study English, and he speaks the broken English, and then he throws these German words here and there. Then in Little Men, the narrator says that he has improved his English a lot, but he still uses some of his favorite German phrases, like Schatz and Mein Sohn.

Sinem: Yes, that is true, and I also have to say, I think it is also very important for him to actually use this kind of language. He has a very open vocabulary, I'd say, and I think it is also very important to note that he didn't come to New York for himself. The reason why he came there was to provide for his nephews, and I think it also shows his very caring nature. It kind of a parallel to Louisa May Alcott, when she wanted to provide for her own nephews, and I think that was the reason why she started writing Little Men, she knew she wanted to write another book to the series, but she was like, okay, I have to provide for my nephews, because their father just died, and then she wrote Little Men, and that is just so sweet, and it's also a wonderful parallel to how Friedrich came to New York to provide for his nephews, and when he looks for work, so he can provide a home for Jo.

Niina: That is true, I hadn't thought about that before. That is a parallel between Louisa May Alcott and Friedrich's character. Her brother-in-law, John Pratt, had died before she started to write Little Men.

Sinem: Whenever I read Little Men, I always cry at the passage where John Brooke dies.

An AU you’re working on/thought of: Okay, none of these are being worked on, I’m not committing to another big fic until I finish the ones I’m already writing, buuuuut…

An Officer and a Gentleman. That ending gets me every fucking time, and I don’t know how I would Steddiefy it but I’d try. Steve in the Zak role and Eddie would obviously be his Paula. ❤️ I like it too because there is plenty of angst in the movie. Lots to play with.

A Star Is Born. I mean, pretty self explanatory that one, but it hit me recently that this would be perfect fodder for Steddie. Eddie in the Jackson Maine role (I mean, you could do the 1937, 1954 or 1976 versions instead, but I’m thinking 2018), and Steve in the Ally role. Full of romance, angst, drama and a bit of whump, delicious.

Ok this is the one I really want to write: Vietnam War. It’s a special interest for me, I have a lot of books on the subject, I’ve watched the Ken Burns doc more times than is healthy, and my first major fandom was The A Team, which was pure 80s action entertainment for the family, but the fanfic… oh, the fanfic. ❤️ This is the one I’ve given really serious thought to, but it’s also the one that needs a lot of research. I have a starting point, Eddie receiving his draft letter, coming home from work and Wayne at the kitchen table with the letter in his hand, absolutely dejected because he knows what it is. Thing is, I’m not sure that it’s a big sprawling epic of a plot that I want to write, more moments in time, vignettes, and maybe not all Eddie POV either. I have an idea for Jonathan meeting Nancy, who is an army nurse, and them falling in love. I think a series might work better, I dunno. But yeah, it’s always rattling around at the back of my mind.

PLA! We are thinking about poor Val, ain’t we? 🥲

We’ve never had a post from her perspective so it’s not as easy to see as the other characters; but we, like Jo, are kiiiiind of getting glimpses past her facade. She’s a woman who absolutely takes no bullshit, and for as much as she likes to play games, really only puts her cards on the table when she knows she’ll win. So for her to have made that move, she either felt like it was a safe play, or (much more likely), she had a rare moment where her emotions got the better of her.

Add onto that that she took that risk on a woman, and like you said, it really brings the confusion and denial to a whole ‘nother level. Did I misread the signals? Was it just a move of friendship? Jo is in some ways is running the same circuit; but that question is hard to ask, especially when you add the historical context AND the extra level of infidelity between these two in particular.

But can love bombing fix this? I guess it depends what “fixing this” looks like. Unlike the first time around, Jo is very happy with Gio. It’s that happiness that pushed her to walk away from Val, so it’s possible that their future could be much less fraught than their past. The trouble comes in because there’s still something in Jo that she’s fighting despite either of them. Her internal turmoil says it pretty clearly:

Run. Throw it all away. Cut every tie so that no one and nothing can hurt you. Love is just as much a cage as need. Run.

Is love bombing going to fix that? I mean it certainly brings her joy and stability, but there’s also a layer of vulnerability that’s making her uncomfortable. Because that’s the thing about love, isn’t it? It comes with emotional tethers, which is why you see her saying that “love is just as much a cage as dependence.” It’s warmer. It’s happier. It’s blinding, but it stills weighs in all your choices and splits part of you to attach to someone else. It hurts differently in that way, and if you’re someone like Jo who seeks self autonomy at all costs, the fear of losing yourself to someone, or even worse, being hurt by them, is horrifying.

Run. Don’t let them hold you back. This isn’t enough. But why, Jo? Why isn’t this enough? I love you more than all of this. Despite any of it. Shouldn’t that be enough?

There’s also something restless in Jo: the pull and the desire to see more - more of Val’s house, or to follow that thread just to see where it goes. To see where the road ends or just how far she can push her own limits, or those of the people she loves. Part of her longs for it - the disruption and the novelty. I actually think Gio knows that better than Val, and that’s why Jo’s internal monologue shifts to who we can assume is Gio, saying that he loves her despite any of it. He knows. That’s what makes her pull back. So in that way, he can help her face that side of herself if she’s willing to let go of it. But then you’re right back to the first quote, in that the sheer vulnerability of love freaks her out. Especially when it’s hard to forget that Gio did betray her, even if his actions and apologies have begun to soften that blow.

So like as for an actual short answer to your question (after I’ve gone on a three page rant)….maybe? 😬

Like if Jo can learn to let herself be loved unconditionally and also return that openly and honestly. But she also very much needs to resist the temptation to use control or manipulation to try and offset her own fear of hurt. Bonus points if she can continue to channel that restless feeling into something productive and meaningful, rather than let it burn through her so that it hurts her AND the people she loves. Suffice to say: she’s got a hill to climb and a mean penchant for justifying her own actions, so it’s an uphill battle.

I once again went on a bit of a tangent, so my response is below the cut. 🫶🏼

TW // alcoholism, addiction, drug use

I was indifferent about Jo at first because I knew I wouldn’t be watching after Tracy was gone and I didn’t want to get attached to a new character, but she has grown on me and I really like her.

I hate that we only just met her halfway through the season because I really like who she is and her story, and I would have loved to see more of the dynamic between her and Hailey. I feel like they work well together, and there are similarities between them that really allow them to resonate with each other with Jo’s struggle and Hailey’s past with her dad. They just mesh well and like I said in my unofficial review, the chemistry between Bojana and Tracy is absolutely insane to me, and so incredible. It’s a shame we won’t get to see more of it because I agree with you in that Hailey and Jo could have had a really interesting partnership, maybe even a solid friendship between them.

I think the way Jo’s character speaks and acts and how she deals with things is unique to her situation as a functioning, but still struggling alcoholic. What they’re doing with her is oddly comforting to me in a way because I feel like they’re doing it the right way. So far, at least.

Alcoholism is a crippling disease. It destroys people, it destroys families, and takes years to rebuild the relationships and trust that have been broken because of it, if they can ever be rebuilt at all. I don’t think you can truly appreciate or understand Jo’s character to the fullest extent if you haven’t known someone in your life who has struggled with addiction, or you haven’t struggled with it yourself.

I’m gonna get personal here for a second, but for me it was my biological mom. She has struggled with alcohol and drugs her entire life and to this day, I don’t have a relationship with her. Which is why it was so easy for me to clock what Jo’s secret was, because I’ve lived with it and have seen it firsthand.

I don’t think people gave Jo a fair shake when she first appeared on the show. I saw a lot of people kind of just write her off and say, “oh, it’s Tracy’s replacement,” and while that may be true if she sticks around, I don’t think it’s a fair thing to say. We knew Tracy was leaving, and Jesse was already gone, so it makes sense for them to bring in new blood to the show the same way they did with Torres’ character.

I’ve also seen people make jokes and comments about Jo and how she’s a drunk and a floozy and give her awful nicknames because of it, and I think it’s an incredibly ignorant take, especially for those that struggle with the disease in real life.

Maybe I’m biased because I can relate to Jo’s story, but all this to say, I like the character and I like what they’re doing with her and I really hope they do the character justice with the story they’ve presented. Bojana is an incredible actress and she can clearly pull it off, the same way Jon Seda did when the writers went the route they did with Antonio and his drug addiction. I don’t think they handled that storyline as well as they could have, so hopefully they do it better this time around.

LANCE:

Obviously lance’s dad is at almost every race weekend, and at first he’s very cold with you. Lance’s previous Dom fed into his self esteem issues and had a lot of resentment towards lance for essentially getting his own team bought by his dad.

Maybe you weren’t hired by them, but instead Sebastian brought you from Ferrari? He swore up and down to Lawrence that you were a good Dom and that you’d help lance.

So at first he’s very cold towards you, but as he slowly starts to see his son becoming happier and happier, he starts to talk to you more and get to know you. And before you know it, he’s kinda adopted you?

CHARLES:

Ferrari is absolutely fucking terrified of you. If it weren’t for the fact that Charles would leave Ferrari without you there, they would have fired you a long time ago. But you and Charles are a packaged deal. From the moment he first met you, he knew he would never race for a team that wouldn’t let you be his dominant. Charles will let Ferrari fuck him over for the rest of his racing career, but the moment Ferrari even think about getting rid of you, he’s leaving.

As for Charles’s family, they love you. Especially Arthur? You help Arthur a lot before races and let him come cuddle with you and Charles and make sure he finds a Dom who is worthy of him. So honestly, they all love you.

And it’s a good thing they do, because Charles hates going anywhere with you. Of course he’s more than welcome to spend one on one time with his family, but he’s a high needs sub and he hates even the thought of relaxing without you there.

MAX:

If Jos could kill you, he would. Seriously, he blames every single one of his problems on you, because you’re the reason his son has changed, the reason his son no longer hides the fact that he’s submissive.

Meanwhile, Red Bull really likes you. Christian absolutely loves you, and is always inviting you to have lunch with him on race weekends and asking you about max. Christian understands that you’re part of the reason he has a two times world champion on his team.

Honestly, Max’s mother loved you the moment she found out that Jos couldn’t stand you. That was enough for an approval in her books.

CARLOS:

You have a very interesting relationship with Carlos’s father, because his father has never really approved of the submissive side of him. He always thought that his son would be just a dominant, and he and Carlos eventually built up this relationship where they both acted like he wasn’t a switch.

So seeing you is difficult for him, because it forces him to acknowledge that his son isnt just a dominant.

But nevertheless, he’s kind to you, because on some level even he can admit that Carlos races better when he submits regularly.

Grey's Anatomy: We've Only Just Begun (20x01)

And we're back! Crazy that this is the 20th season. I saw that Station 19 is ending after this season, which means Grey's has a very solid chance of outlasting another spinoff! Let's dive right in.

Cons:

I am still repulsed by Jo and Link, I cannot help it. They just do absolutely nothing for me and it feels like such a forced, lazy writing choice. I think part of it is just that Jo and Alex, and Amelia and Link, both felt like real, organic, interesting romances to me that were earned over a long period of time, and this is just like... eh, throw the leftovers together I guess.

My Owen and Teddy dislike will never go away, but in this episode it wasn't so much that they annoyed me as that the storyline felt completely unnecessary? Teddy collapsing and needing emergency surgery and potentially dying felt like even more of a lazy tacked on drama for the cliffhanger last season than I'm used to with this show.

Pros:

The good news for the future of this show is that I do continue to be interested by our intern characters, our new crop of leads. Jules and Blue with their awkward, hostile attraction and connection, Adams and Simone with their obstacles as they continue their burgeoning love story, Yasuda with her career doubts and anxieties. And in even more good news, Nick is leaving the hospital: I'm annoyed that it's to go be with Meredith, who deserves better than that stick in the mud, but at least that means he hopefully won't be around as much anymore.

This show is famous for its ridiculous disaster scenarios, and I like that it knows how to have fun with them and also comment on current events. The self-driving car malfunctioning and slamming again and again into the ambulance was a wacky scenario but also a believable extrapolation from stuff that's happened in real life, and it also gives an new and interesting challenge to several of the characters. I like that Adams and Simone have to make some of their own tough calls in the ambulance where they're trapped, but also have Meredith and Bailey outside guiding them through. Kind of a poignant metaphor for the current direction of the show, in a way: these characters we've been with for decades at this point are still around, and can still be depended upon, but the new kids have to forge their own path as well. I'm glad the patient in the ambulance survived, as did the guy inside the test car: a stressful and bizarre day of work, but ultimately a win, which I think everyone needed.

In Teddy news, as I said I was a little underwhelmed by the existence of this plot thread to begin with. But I did appreciate Winston being calm under pressure and totally handling the situation, saving her life and also steering Owen away from the midst of everything, encouraging him to get some rest. I also like Owen and Amelia having this steady friendship after all the tumult of their past relationship. Seeing her there for him during a difficult moment was great.

I love the role Meredith has in this world, now. She is a steadfast presence, and if this show continues for another decade to come, I hope Ellen Pompeo is willing to keep coming back for a couple episodes a season, so her presence is still felt. We're setting up an interesting plot that can develop in the background: Catherine Fox wants Meredith to drop her controversial takes about Alzheimer's research and go where the funding is, and Meredith actually seemingly agrees to this. She'll take the party line and stop making controversial waves for Catherine to deal with. But... she hands her research off to Amelia, so that it can continue in secret. This is really intriguing, and I actually got a little emotional thinking about Amelia and Meredith working on this project together!

We end with Teddy waking up, thank goodness, Link and Jo sharing a romantic moment (no thank you), and Richard going to an AA meeting to recommit to his sobriety - good for him! I'm excited to see where the show takes us next; there are always enough characters and stories going on in this show that it keeps me hooked, even when some of the characters are... not my favorites. We'll see which way things go from here!

they have very little screentime so i don’t have much to say about them. i have definetly seen a lot of girls like them, but that was usually when i was primary school age, not as a teenager. at times they can be really annoying, but their friendship can be pretty wholesome at times. reminds me of how attached i was to my friends at… well, not their age. there’s nothing really bad about them, but not much good either? really indifferent about them.

fresh tv did NOT know how to write a character with a mental disorder… besides the bad representation, i think mike is a pretty nice guy! i love silly-with-a-hint-of-mental-disorder characters like him. he’s one of the better characters from gen 2, and he’s… sweet? that’s how i’m going to word it. also. i‘m going to say it right here. i LOVE svetlana (or swjetłana, as they call her in the Polish dub). my favourite alter (i think that’s the term?) of his. totally not just because she’s slavic and i crave representation, she’s just a very fun character and a very skilled gymnast! i also like vito. he’s cool. very unfortunate what they did with mike in ass stars!

trent -

trent is a very interesting character. i could go on for ages, analysing his behaviours, figuring out his past traumas and what caused him to end up the way he is. there is so much to talk about with trent! that’s why i love trentcourse: it’s just a bunch of people talking about this guy!! he’s a sweetheart. his chill, coolheaded, and a really kind person. he’s not made much real enemies, and. ugh. i love his relationship with gwen. just,,,,, so pure. action kinda fucked him up a little bit, but in a way it gave him a bit of depth? my personal theory on why he kinda just. snapped was that since action started so early after island, he hadn’t gotten the chance to pack enough meds, and anyone who’s needed to take any sort of medication for that kind of thing will probably know that if you’re going to go off of medication/start taking medication, you need to do it gradually, and that’s for a good reason!!!!!! anyways i love trent. he and cody are the traumatised boyfriends.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE DAKOTA!!!!!! SHE’S SO FUCKING SILLY. genuinely. she is my favourite character of gen 2 alongside jo. she’s a bit how i used to imagine myself to be in the future! fashionable, famous, rich, successful, and in a healthy relationship!! (samkota is SO WHOLESOME) her turning into dakotazoid was actually really great. i kinda prefer her that way! she could still be confident with her body despite being a twelve foot tall mutant! i don’t fully understand people who draw her as ‘healed’ from that because like. i don’t think you can reverse something that drastic. and also she’s comfortable with it! she doesn’t seem too upset about it (iirc of course. been a while since i’ve rewatched roti). anyways dakota is amazing, i love her and her relationship with sam, and i think she and zoey should be best friends!!

ok i don’t know if you’d want to hear it but. i’m sorry. i hate her. like every moment she was on screen i’d get SUPER uncomfortable. her actions towards cody were horrible and i am not going to ignore them even though yeah she’s a fictional character!!!! i don’t know if her actions were meant to come off as jokes or not but either way it’s not funny at all. i like her design, her voice acting is AMAZING, her face is very expressive (and i love that in a cartoon!), paris in the springtime was one of the best songs of the season (but it will never beat her real name isn’t blaineley), but she’s just. not a good character. she had potential! i would’ve loved it if she was a villain, like, you set up alejandro to be the main villain but them BOOM! sierra is actually a manipulative mastermind who will blackmail anyone and get them eliminated!! or something like that. but yeah i don’t like sierra.

where do i start? sam would one, love love love your personality! your optimism, free spirited, and silly personality is what drew him to you in the first place. it was like a breath of fresh air after stewing in dean's pessimism and the dread that hung over the two of them while hunting/ being hunters for so long. he admires the fact that you love to learn new languages and even would try to learn the one you're currently learning atm. this totally didn't happened but before the two of you started to date and found out that you loved to pick up new languages, sam tried learning one of the languages you already knew to try and impress/surprise you with. the fact that you can dance and draw makes sam fall for you even more, loving the fact that you have such a creative spirit and it shows in the doodles you give him as you absentmindedly draw on napkins from a dinner or even have the opportunities to draw on his hand or arm. it also shows with how graceful and agile you are as you hunt.

sam would be so intrigued that you're picking up witchcraft! though he would be hesitant at first but eventually open up to the fact that you are. he would listen intently to your ramblings about what you had learned as you researched about the craft. sam would smile at your fascination with the moon and how much you love fall, being to see your face brighten when you see the leaves change and seeing you bundled up in your favorite brown jacket (that looks eerily similar to one in his closet) as you guys walk together hand in hand down the bustling streets of whatever town you guys are staying in for the time being.

jo would adore your silly and goofy nature! at first she'd thought that your attitude didn't match hunters at all but as you rolled through the roadhouse every so often, she found it refreshing. it was better than the gruff and brash personalities that floated in and out of the bar that she was used to and found that when you come in, a smile stretched on her face as you greeted her eagerly. from then the two of you attached to one another like glue. she can always tell when you’re at the roadhouse because of the brown jacket you always wear when your favorite season rolls around. jo loves when you get slightly tipsy enough to where you start to dance with her in the empty bar after closing to the old jukebox in the corner or when you accidentally slip into one of the languages you’re learning or fluent in. the two of you as best friends would probs make the world collapse if you spent everyday together.

okay i don't think you'd have any enemies in spn, but you and dean would def have a frenemy/bickering relationship with one another. at first, dean would find your optimism a little grating and just confusing because why would someone so optimistic be a hunter? he likes to pretend he's a serious hunter but we all know deep down he is a silly goofy guy and seeing that reflected in your personality makes him envious that he doesn't express it is often as he wants to. so in turn he either shuns you or makes some off-handed remarks about it. but in turn you would dish it right back at him, throwing him off but then you guys would devolve into a little bickering battle, only ending when sam has to interject like a referee and almost separate you guys (sam sends you guys to opposite sides of the motel to cool down). but after a bad hunt, you sit with dean in silence and things shifted between of you. the bickering wasn't out of malice but dean has to keep up appearances and can't show that he tolerates you (even though by the time the bickering is over, there's a small smile on his face). he'll never admit this out loud but he finds it cool that you know a lot of languages and that you are creative spirit (you gave him sketch of the impala and he still has it to this day even though he said he was going to throw it out).

OMGG i have too many, i love all of them so much!! but if i had to choose like top five it would be: percy, annabeth, leo, frank, and reyna!

oof ermm that is a tough question mari 😭😭. but for one FUCK OCTAVIAN im glad that little rat bastard died in blood of olympus LMAO (octavian got what he deserved) but other than him i don't really hate any characters in the pjo universe, but i mean i could also say the godly parents bc that's a given. but sally jackson is our queen! 🙌

when it comes to ships, most of them i like but there is one where it doesn't make sense in my mind lol which is leo and calypso? its not that i don't think leo could bag calypso, he literally did lol, but like we've seen leo's perspective in the books and mans would not benefit from a relationship. another than that i like any of the other ships that are canon or fanon. i'm not a huge shipper myself but i obvs love percabeth, solangelo, frazel, and jason x brick LOL.
