THE MEGA RP PLOTTING SHEET / MEME.
First and foremost, recall that no one is perfect, we all had witnessed some plotting once which did not went too well, be it because of us or our partner. So here have this, which may help for future plotting. It’s a lot! Yes, but perhaps give your partners some insight? Anyway BOLD what fully applies, italicize if only somewhat. Long post!
MUN NAME: Pie     AGE: +25       CONTACT: IM, Ask, Discord (mutuals only, by request)
CHARACTER(S): Cullen
CURRENT FANDOM(S): Dragon Age
FANDOM(S) YOU HAVE AN AU FOR:  I have a modern verse for everything not Dragon Age, but I might add some actual alt verses for other fandoms
MY LANGUAGE(S): English (native), Spanish (intermediate), Korean (baby lol beginner), bits and bobs of other languages (namely French and French Patois)
THEMES I’M INTERESTED IN FOR RP: FANTASY / SCIENCE FICTION / HORROR / WESTERN / ROMANCE / THRILLER / MYSTERY / DYSTOPIA / ADVENTURE / MODERN / EROTIC / CRIME / MYTHOLOGY / CLASSIC / HISTORY / RENAISSANCE / MEDIEVAL / ANCIENT / WAR / FAMILY / POLITICS / RELIGION / SCHOOL / ADULTHOOD / CHILDHOOD / APOCALYPTIC / GODS / SPORT / MUSIC / SCIENCE / FIGHTS / ANGST / SMUT / DRAMA / ETC. (I started this and realised I’d be bolding almost everything, so: EVERYTHING)
PREFERRED THREAD LENGTH: ONE-LINER / 1 PARA / 2 PARA / 3+ PARA / NOVELLA. / ALL
ASKS CAN BE SEND BY: MUTUALS / NON-MUTUALS / PERSONALS / ANONS.
CAN ASKS BE CONTINUED?: YES / NO / OCCASIONALLY   - only by Mutuals?:  YES / NO
PREFERRED THREAD TYPE: CRACK / CASUAL / SERIOUS / DEEP AS HECK. / ALL
IS REALISM / RESEARCH IMPORTANT FOR YOU IN CERTAIN THEMES?:   YES / NO.
ARE YOU ATM OPEN FOR NEW PLOTS?:  YES / NO / DEPENDS. (after my paper is submitted, yeah sure)
DO YOU HANDLE YOUR DRAFT / ASK - COUNT WELL?:  YES / NO / SOMEWHAT. (irl makes coping difficult sometimes)
HOW LONG DO YOU USUALLY TAKE TO REPLY?: 24H / 1 WEEK / 2 WEEKS / 3+ WEEKS / MONTHS / YEARS. / DEPENDS ON MOOD AND INSPIRATION, AND IF I’M BUSY
I’M OKAY INTERACTING WITH: ORIGINAL CHARACTERS / A RELATIVE OF MY CHARACTER (AN OC) / DUPLICATES / CROSSOVERS / MULTI-MUSES / SELF-INSERTS / PEOPLE WITH NO AU VERSE FOR MY FANDOM / CANON-DIVERGENT PORTRAYALS / AU-VERSIONS.
DO YOU POST MORE IC OR OOC?: IC / OOC. (I strive for more IC over OOC, but my queue does a lot of work too)
ARE YOU SELECTIVE WITH FOLLOWING OTHERS?: YES / NO / DEPENDS.
BEST WAYS TO APPROACH YOU FOR RP/PLOTTING:  Talk with me over IM, asks, or Disco. I’m down for almost anything as long as I see it’s feasible.
WHAT EXPECTATIONS DO YOU HOLD TOWARDS YOUR PLOTTING PARTNER:  Transparency. If you have an idea, let me know! If you’re stuck, let me know! If you want to start something new or scrap something or whatever...LET ME KNOW! I promise I don’t bite and I understand.
WHEN YOU NOTICE THE PLOTTING IS RATHER ONE-SIDED, WHAT DO YOU DO?:  I’m not very good with coming up with plots myself, so I’m typically the weak link when it comes to that. Sorry! But you bet I’ll pull up a plot generator and start throwing things down to see what sticks haha.
HOW DO YOU USUALLY PLOT WITH OTHERS, DO YOU GIVE INPUT OR LEAVE MOST WORK TOWARDS YOUR PARTNER?:  I’m all about equal opportunity, so I try not to leave the plotting work to my partner. Let’s negotiate and find something that makes both of us happy. That’s the point after all.
WHEN A PARTNER DROPS THE THREAD, DO YOU WISH TO KNOW?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. - AND WHY?: If you want to drop a thread, I’m completely fine with it. I want to know so that I don’t end up replying to something you have no interest in anymore. Saves both of us the time.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY LEAD YOU TO DROP A THREAD?:  If drafts eat it (as they are wont to do these days) or if I feel it has reached a natural conclusion. I rarely, if ever, drop a thread in the middle. I’ll just let you know I’m going to finish it on my side and allow you a chance to finish on yours if you’d like.
WILL YOU TELL YOUR PARTNER?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS.
IS COMMUNICATION IN THE RPC IMPORTANT TO YOU? YES / NO. - AND WHY?: You don’t need to chat with me every minute of every day, but I like knowing the people I’m writing with. Discerning your personality and your approach to your muse gives me a much stronger understanding of how to write with you, and what vibes between us. Plus, it’s easier to remember different people’s boundaries if I talk with them a lot, too.
ARE YOU OKAY WITH ABSOLUTE HONESTY, EVEN IF IT MAY MEANS HEARING SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT YOU AND/OR PORTRAYAL?: I am all for constructive criticism. Even if you think it’s nitpicky, it’s going to be a great help. Good crit allows us grow as writers and as people in general. However, I am not for baseless accusations, childish name-calling, or outright insults under the name of “constructive crit”. Remember the “constructive” part: we need to build each other up.
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE SUCH SITUATION IN A MATURE WAY? YES / NO.
WHY DO YOU RP AGAIN, IS THERE A GOAL?: I love a good story. While I don’t agree with everything Cullen does (and no one should, for anyone real or imagined), his story is intriguing. He’s a deeply flawed, deeply broken man. I love to take on a character, toss them in every situation I can think of, and watch them evolve and grow.
WISHLIST, BE IT PLOTS OR SCENARIOS:  A real redemption arc, for one. A realistic struggle with substance abuse and recovery. A future of happiness.
THEMES I WON’T EVER RP / EXPLORE:   Rape or sexual assault, unless being spoken about as a past event (as I truly believe that Cullen was sexually assaulted at Kinloch along with the other psychological and physical torture he endured). In-game racism is baked in, unfortunately, but it’s not something I seek out to roleplay as a PoC myself. Finally, while I play Cullen as canon-straight, I will not play out homophobia and most definitely not transphobia. If he rejects your muse for hitting on him, it’s not because he’s being homophobic: he’s just not interested. That also doesn’t mean he’ll never be interested; people can and do change, and I ship chemistry overall. He doesn’t hate your muse for their gender, orientation, or sexual preferences. I feel like I really have to spell this out for people who don’t understand. If you feel personally insulted by this somehow, feel free to address me directly, off anon. It’s probably an issue of fuzzy wording that I’m 500% willing to fix and talk about.
WHAT TYPE OF STARTERS DO YOU PREFER / DISLIKE, CAN’T WORK WITH?: I love starters that set the scene and provide plenty to work with, be it in terms of interacting with the environment or with the other person. If your muse shows immediate disinterest in communicating (and I don’t mean argumentative, which is perfectly fine), I am not going to respond. I might politely ask for more if I feel like it’s a salvageable interaction.
WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE MOST?:  Stoic soldier types, bubbly short girls, and semi-mad scientists.
WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE LEAST?:  Characters that come across as Mary-Sue / Gary-Stu types. No flaws and barely any room to grow.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRONG ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I'm very easy-going and I have an unearthly level of tolerance for almost everything. I try to provide partners with as much to work with as possible IC, and will pretty much support your very existence OOC. I believe in open communication so you’ll know what’s going on with me and/or our threads. Also, I typically reply within a week or two. Currently I’m tethered to finishing a big paper so I’m not a good example of that right now.
WHAT ARE YOUR WEAK ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I can get overwhelmed by too much which slows my pace down considerably. I’m also a bit distant and do shut down on occasion; that’s usually no fault of my partners, though. Just my brain being a dick.
DO YOU RP SMUT?:  YES / NO / DEPENDS. (the closer we are OOC, the easier getting here will be)
DO YOU PREFER TO GO INTO DETAIL?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. (it’s not going to be XXX but it will be descriptive)
ARE YOU OKAY WITH BLACK CURTAIN, FADE TO BLACK?: YES / NO.
WHEN DO YOU RP SMUT? MORE OUT OF FUN OR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?: I prefer to write smut for character development and to mark a progression in a relationship. Plus Cullen is not a “one and done” guy so getting to the smut stage will take a bit of build-up.
ANYTHING YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO RP THERE?:  Hmmm things that he personally wouldn’t go for I guess? Honestly I don’t know. And obviously, no rape/animal abuse/predator nonsense.
ARE SHIPS IMPORTANT TO YOU?:   YES / NO Ships are a great way to further explore a character and their motivations. People do not exist in pure isolation, so I don’t believe characters should, either.
WOULD YOU SAY YOUR BLOG IS SHIP-FOCUSED?: YES / NO. I bolded both because the focus of the blog isn’t ships, but this thirst trap guy is really easy to ship with other people I tell ya hwat. I am severely picky with romantic ships for Reasons, but I don’t eschew any other types of ships. I encourage them!
DO YOU USE READ MORE?:  YES / NO / SOMETIMES WHEN I WRITE LONG STUFF.
ARE YOU:  MULTI-SHIP / SINGLE-SHIP / DUAL-SHIP  —  MULTIVERSE / SINGLEVERSE.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO EXPLORE THE MOST IN YOUR SHIPS?: Characters who challenge Cullen into revising his point of view and force him to be a better person. Also, characters who understand his past and they are in no ways obligated to forgive it, but do recognise that he’s struggling very hard to mend whatever mistakes he can and is willing to pay the price for his decisions.
ARE YOU OKAY WITH PRE-ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS?: YES / NO / DEPENDS.  - Be a good salesperson and I might buy it.
► SECTION ABOUT YOUR MUSE.
- WHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE YOUR MUSE INTERESTING TOWARDS OTHERS, WHY SHOULD THEY RP WITH THIS PARTICULAR CHARACTER OF YOURS NOW, WHAT POSSIBLE PLOTS DO THEY OFFER?: Cullen is a massive stick in the mud, which means it’s incredibly easy to taunt him and get him flustered all at the same time. He’s loyal, he’s intelligent, and he’s largely self-aware. He likes swords and using them. Anything your character hates about him, he most likely hates about himself 100 times more.
WITH WHAT TYPE OF MUSES DO YOU USUALLY STRUGGLE TO RP WITH?:  Those from the start that show absolutely no interest in speaking with/interacting with him. Mun and muse are going to struggle to stick around. I’m not going to fight for attention and neither is he.
WHAT DO THEY DESIRE, WHAT IS THEIR GOAL?:  Redemption. He wants to be a better person and make up for the past as much as he can.
WHAT CATCHES THEIR INTEREST FIRST WHEN MEETING SOMEONE NEW?:  He can sniff out a fellow Templar a mile away (or several miles, in the case of Samson).
WHAT DO THEY VALUE IN A PERSON?:  Honesty, a strong will, devotion (not necessarily to the Maker or the Chantry, but to a just cause that focuses on protecting others).
WHAT THEMES DO THEY LIKE TALKING ABOUT?:  War stuff, chess, books, trebuchets, dogs.
WHICH THEMES BORE THEM?:  Lectures about anything. He did his time in Azkaban in the Circles. No more. Please no more.
DID THEY EVER WENT THROUGH SOMETHING TRAUMATIC?:  His parents died trying to escape the Blight, he was tortured for weeks/months on end by blood mages, almost all of his friends died because of it, he was manipulated and brainwashed by his superior, he was forced into a near-debilitating substance addiction by his workplace... yeah just a few things.
WHAT COULD LEAD TO AN INSTANT KILL?:  Darkspawn and abominations.
IS THERE SOMEONE /-THING THEY HATE?:  Darkspawn and abominations. Blood mages on principle. Regular mages (but he’s working hard to remedy this extremely bad and prejudiced thinking). Himself.
IS YOUR MUSE EASY TO APPROACH?: YES / NO.    - BEST WAY TO APPROACH THEM?:  Just be polite and he won’t turn you away. He’s guarded, yes, but not impossible to talk to.
SOMETHING YOU MAY STILL WANT TO POINT OUT ABOUT YOUR MUSE?: You’ll find out by writing together! ;D
CONGRATS!!! You managed it, now tag your mutuals! ♥

My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Are they underrated?  YES / NO / IDK
Were they relevant to the main story?  YES / NO
Were they relevant to the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO / IDK
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL / depends on the timeline
How strictly do you follow canon?
i generally follow it but given that amara’s story relies more on post hadestown it’s been up to me to expand on stuff , but i try to envision how it would go !
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals
headstrong and bright but also her life was like steeped in grief ?? and tragedy from like the moment she was born but she’s also meant embody a sense of optimism and a chance to start over. she’s very talented in her own right and has a story of her own !!!   angst about motherhood and being made to grow up to fast and dealing with ptsd !!! and trying to step out from the shadow of hadestown and rewrite a narrative !!
Now the OPPOSITE. List everything why your muse might not be so interesting (even if you don’t agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?)
i think her story is very much a part of orpheus and eurydices and i think it would be fair to not want to rp with her because i get it’s kind of like ??? ugh a child muse this shit again . . .  and there is the worry she might come across as too mary sue-ish but i do my best to develop a distinct identity for her !
What inspired you to rp your muse?
the thing about musicals , unlike television shows and movies is that there is not sequel --  no love never dies does not count and ht itself has a very limited character fare ??  i think it’s natural people want to look towards resolutions and post- stuff , to see life after and the spring that comes . .  i was very taken by the idea of there being some kind of redemption for orpheus and made amara completely as a whim . . .
What keeps your inspiration going?
the people that adore us !!!!!! have been really welcoming
Some more personal questions for the mun. Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO. / I’m not sure, I do try!
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO.
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO.  :(
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES  / NO. / SOMETIMES .
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO.
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO.
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO.
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?
yes , to an extent . i think constructive criticism would help , but tbh i havent received any up to this point so i cant really say how i would react ...??? i would like to think i would take it like a champ though .
Do you like questions which help you explore your character?
YES PLEASE GIVE ME THE QUESTIONS.
If someone disagrees with a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?
depends who it is but i think i’d be open to revisions !  for like threads especially
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?
badly . jk we are all free to think what we want but i think it would likely end up in me soft blocking them because there’s no need to get so heated over such things you know
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?
it depends on if they hate the character or they hate my ?? portrayal of the character . i think if they hate the character it’s fine bc fiction is supposed to create complex characters for people to hate and that’s the point . i would be really ??? hurt if someone disliked my character in terms of writing though ngl but yeah... you win some you lose some
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?
that’s just petty tbh like we all make mistakes and really does anyone go and edit ?? this is not being published or anything it’s just posted on tumblr . . . let it go .  i saw a recent post making the rounds about a call out post being made against someone for a spelling mistake even though english wasn’t their first language and if you support that kind of policing please just unfollow me right now , and get over yourself .
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?
i think so  ahah im quite chill and sometimes i can be a real pushover tbh

Steven Universe: Art and Origins (Outline & Review)
Steven Universe: Art and Origins is not just an art book--it's also a collection of early material, a reveal of many initial concepts, and an amazing experience to sort through.
Tumblr media
Finally getting around to importing my review to Tumblr. I wrote this on the release day.
In my review I'll give you a description of the structure and overview, while also collecting notable information for fans. Obviously just about everything is "notable" with a book of this magnitude, so this may get long, but I'll try to include anecdotes that have some unique insight or perspective on the main source material--with as little of "OMG this was the original idea for this!" as possible.
This is illustrated with some low-quality pictures of the book and it gets super long, so I have to cut. But please read. :)
The overview:
After a foreword from Rebecca Sugar and an introduction from Genndy Tartakovsky, we get:
Tumblr media
Part 1: Origins. This contains some narratives about Rebecca Sugar's early life as an artist--inspiration, family, college projects--all illustrated, of course, with childhood photos and early art. Rebecca mentions having wanted to bury her femininity for a while, but coming back to draw female forms and include dancing after she learned to sort through her issues using art.
Her college education and connections with other artists are discussed--some in interview format, some in narrative--and there is some background regarding her time on Adventure Time. The story moves on to talking about developing the pilot and what went into her character and plot ideas. Character design is discussed in depth, with Rebecca giving initial sketches to a design team and developing the characters' initial pilot look.
Tumblr media
Some really slick promo art is shared--posters, sketches, great concepts that were designed to bring in new viewers and make them curious about the show. The pilot succeeded in getting the green light to develop it into a TV series.
Tumblr media
Part 2 discusses the show's Green Light and Development. Rebecca and some of the other crew, in interview format, talk about getting the team together and allowing for both nailed-down character essentials and flexibility for the writers to explore and collaborate. Developing the setting was also a big part of the to-do list; coming up with Beach City itself, its businesses, its residents, and also the creatures the Gems would fight.
Some cute stories are shared about the early Crewniverse hanging out at a cabin and talking about the show all the time, hashing it out. There are some great, loose character model sheets for early versions of Greg, Connie, Sadie and Lars, and the four main characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 3 is about Character Design. They discuss how the pilot got released and fans grew attached to what they initially looked like, only to be "outraged" by the changes, making tons of assumptions about who was controlling the process.
Rebecca shares some thoughts on her development process and her philosophy on letting different artists draw the characters differently while gripping onto specifics she set. Main, palette, and distance models are discussed, with some technical details of what different artists do on the team and how they handle props or special poses.
There are many sheets of how to draw the Gems on model (with pointers on what NOT to do), and then there are some Homeworld Gem ideas that didn't get used, and finally, some sketches and concept art for Lapis Lazuli, Peridot, Jasper, and Bismuth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 4 is on Writing and Storyboarding. More Crewniverse interviews provide insight into the process, including how much is revised from the early days and how collaborative everything is. Some specific episodes, like "Ocean Gem," "Monster Buddies," and "Island Adventure" are put into perspective with how they were written by the group.
There's heavy discussion of how the process works and why processes that work on other shows wouldn't work here, and what "rules" are firm and what's just a suggestion, and what's changed as the show's plot became more complex and important. Steven still having access to the "side" stories, the ones that involve Beach City humans and non-world-shaking stakes, is still very important to the story that the original Crew wants to tell. Cute images from the Crew's thumbnail storyboards, Gem designing, and technology designing workshops are shared too.
There's some good continued discussion of concepts in Part 4, especially about fusion and relationships and the larger message the show is sending. How do you tell a story and why? There are many answers to that, and sometimes it's about fun and sometimes it's about a message and sometimes it's about wanting to make an episode about something you've never seen a cartoon do before--something specific to you that other people can suddenly see represented.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite parts of it is when they discuss Steven discovering the Gems' weaknesses over time and having that NOT make him think less of them--more like he admires them for being strong enough to shoulder the burdens he didn't know they were carrying before. Storyboarder Lamar Abrams talks about the importance of growing up not just being about becoming bitter, and I really like that.
Tumblr media
Part 5 is on Sound and Vision. There's some history of how they found the voice actors for the major roles, and some of the actors give perspectives on their relationship and experience on the show.
Aivi and Surasshu, as the composers, discuss their process as well, with some anecdotes and discussions of why musical palettes work better for characters instead of assigning them themes. Places and objects have their own sounds too.
Tumblr media
Part 6 covers Background Design and Painting. Steven Sugar takes the stage and explains general background thoughts as well as specifics for certain settings. His focus on detail is really fascinating to read about--it's really him who nails down the locations in Beach City and where an outlet is in a house on the wall.
Tumblr media
The directors and other Crewniverse folks discuss the use of color and background items in the show, and how they use it to create mood or feel changeable enough to be real.
Tumblr media
Part 7 discusses Animation and Post, with a spotlight on the work they do in Korea at animation studios Sunmin and Rough Draft. The process is described--how and when the material is transformed from animatics to animated cartoons.
Nick DeMayo discusses timing and adding the sound effects and whatnot. There's also some design instruction that's provided to the animators in Korea.
Some special highlighted drawings and pieces, like the "C.L.O.D.S." zine or some keys for Ruby and Sapphire, are included.
Tumblr media
Even the bumpers and end tag animations are discussed here. And of course they had to mention a couple very special episodes, such as when Takafumi Hori from Studio Trigger came in to do "Mindful Education," or when they did the musical episode, "Mr. Greg."
Tumblr media
And Part 8 is called "Onward." The intention of the section is unclear at first based on the title of the chapter, but you can quickly see they're discussing the forward-thinking message the show has--how its representation of its creators' experiences has also struck a chord with people who wanted and NEEDED its diversity.
Zuke says a very wise thing when they state that they want the show to provide "insight . . . not a solution." That's one thing this show does well; it spotlights problems and situations and feelings, but only shows you how those things can be dealt with, not necessarily how they SHOULD, in all cases, be dealt with.
Representation matters, and seeing evidence that you are a part of this world when you're from a marginalized or underrepresented group is valuable in a way that you can only know if you DON'T have it.
Tumblr media
The show's writers also weigh in on good vs. evil and how it's too black and white; that we needed a show with nuance, and has a message of love and tolerance. Kat Morris acknowledges that there are more important things than making a feelsy and entertaining piece of media, but as she says, the point is to let people see themselves in something and be challenged.
And the creators are able to see at conventions and online that people are responding emotionally, viscerally, to their work. It puts a lot of pressure on an artist to do it right, but in the words of Dogcopter, "Just be true to yourself and people will appreciate your honesty."
The book closes with some photos of the Crew and a few more pages of art. And it kinda leaves you with a squishy feeling. :D
Tumblr media
Notable:
1. I was relieved to see Rebecca state it plainly in the foreword: the items you see from the development phases of this show are not to be taken as canon or as "real" insights into how you should interpret it now. She specifically mentioned that she does not consider the Gems "girls" or "goddesses," and that was particularly important to me.
Throughout, you're supposed to see the contributed bits and in-development pieces in the context of what they were: early drafts, embryonic. We all become different from what we were even though we grew from it and may have roots in it still, but that doesn't mean you can point at the seed and say its flower is meant to be understood surrounded by dirt.
2. The original designs for the Gems fluctuated a lot, and in a couple cases even names flopped around. An early name for Garnet was "Onyx," and if you've seen the pilot, you know Pearl got her signature nose later and Garnet's hair took a while to become the splendid square afro. Amethyst seems to have changed the least.
Themes were given to them initially (like Amethyst being "flora and fauna," which you can sort of see in her pilot intro with her lying on big cats). You can still see some of the original intentions in how the ideas manifested, but the first ideas do not gel particularly well with what the show became.
This is particularly interesting because non-creatives commonly think creative people simply receive inspiration and birth their creations into the world wholesale. Inspiration exists, but it's much more common to take an inspired idea and REALLY WORK ON IT. This book's origins section does a great job showing how that works.
Tumblr media
3. Some early sketched-out ideas for episodes seem very far from what would fit into the show now (such as an idea for an episode where Pearl is obsessed with the pizza guy??), but one seems to be the roots of "Bubble Buddies," which implies that Steven's original crush was "Priyanka" instead of Connie. (That's now Connie's mother's name.)
4. The pilot's title was "The Time Thing."
5. Initial notes for Garnet say she should have the coolest shoes of the three, that she's commanding and outer-spacey and also weird, and that she's inspired by Grace Jones, boy Michael Jackson, and Estelle in "I Can Be a Freak."
Initial notes for Amethyst insist on the "fanny pack" pouch and suggest her clothes are cut, her hair is in chunks, and she should have an animal theme with a wild texture.
Initial notes for Pearl indicate a desire to have her opposite Amethyst in her formal way of dressing and needing to have an outfit that would allow her to be hung upside down, possibly with a pearl stone theme for baubles in her hair. (Rebecca indicated she needed the most help with Pearl.)
6. Early versions of the show included the idea that the Gems might be trying to hide being Gems in public, and that they kept magic away from Steven for the most part instead of encouraging him to use it.
A "lost" episode about Steven summoning his shield (later incorporated into the episode "Gem Glow") had him saving Greg with it and dreaming about his mother, and having Pearl drive a crappy old car (later incorporated into "Last One Out of Beach City"). Rebecca and Ian reveal that the dream Steven had in it was used a little in "Rose's Room," and that a song called "The Meatball Sub Song" was involved which could have contributed to the show getting picked up despite that we never got to hear it. (Imagine that, Steven singing about food!)
7. There's a note in the early character design section that says "the girls can all turn into Steven" with an accompanying illustration of Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl shapeshifted as him.
Tumblr media
Cute, because we actually got to see them do this in the episode "Keep Beach City Weird" with the exception of Pearl.
8. Rebecca Sugar shares an anecdote about thinking there was a "best" way to draw that was objectively correct (influenced by some art-school stuff), and through that she arrived at the idea that Pearl was a cone, Amethyst was a sphere, and Garnet was a cube, because all of those things say something about who they are (pointedness, fluidness, stability).
She evolved from that idea to a more flexibile idea of how drawing works for different artists, but that was part of what helped her nail the characters down. Steven, eventually, was fixed to having a heart-shaped face.
9. The Tiger Millionaire and Purple Puma flyer shown in the episode "Tiger Millionaire," presented as something Steven drew, was actually drawn by Lily DeMayo (daughter of Nick DeMayo, animation director) when she was seven.
10. Guides are made for the Crew to use featuring reminders on drawing the characters. It's kind of adorable to see common drawing errors or misconceptions or inconsistent details discussed in a how-to format for the people who actually work there.
11. A timeline exists for the show and it encompasses TWENTY THOUSAND YEARS of Gem and human history. It was too spoilery to be in the book, but there is a LOT of lore that is laid down, and this tool mentioned in Part 4 established that this document is referenced often to make events make sense in the timeline.
12. It's been established before, but Amethyst's origin in Earth's Prime Kindergarten was not initially known as part of her character when she was invented, and that was discussed in Part 4 of this book--how the writing retreats the Crew takes to discuss the story sometimes result in huge revelations like this. "Oh, that makes sense, that's why we wrote her like that" is one of those things I recognize as a writer--you know a character has a certain vibe, but you don't know what explains it. You just trust that something does. And eventually, sometimes you find out what it is and it all makes sense. Interesting to know they did this with Amethyst.
13. "Lars and Sadie make out even though they're not together" was the basic idea for making "Island Adventure." And the original idea for "Onion Friend" had a "Grandma Shallot" character.
The writers sometimes play writing games to brainstorm, and those were shared. Some ideas for a story which was later used in "Future Boy Zoltron," covering Mr. Smiley's romance/comedy partnership with an old flame, were shared with more emphasis on the characters being lovers.
Garnet's part in the story was more explicit too, with her giving people future predictions that are not at all nice or gently delivered, and they have to shut down the business in the wake of Garnet's badassery. Weird.
Other ideas were used but not as they're presented, like one where Greg learns about fusion from the Gems (but witnessed the fusion of Pearl and Amethyst, not Pearl and Rose), and a complicated one where cross-Gem fusion is a new idea in a flashback and Rose wants Garnet to fuse with her to teach her about it but she's too unsure of her own fusion relationship as such to risk it. The idea was that Pearl would be jealous and Pearl, Rose, and Garnet would actually fuse in the episode. This has not been done in the show.
14. Rebecca Sugar apparently just pops up with concepts she wants the writers to work in. Like "I want Steven to be in a mushroom forest" (which hasn't happened yet) or "I want Steven to have cats on his fingers" (which, obviously, happened early on). Rebecca gets little concepts that are sort of dreamlike, and they figure out which episode they can put them in. Working those things in sometimes seems like as much of a priority as getting plot elements in!
15. I like that they dish a bit about the fan reaction to Garnet's Fusion status. They thought they were being a little too obvious to not get caught, but Ian said the fans figured it out and then got bored of the idea and decided it must be even more complicated than that. People were apparently worried that Garnet would be replaced by her component Gems in the story if she were to unfuse, but obviously since Ruby and Sapphire want to be together, that doesn't happen.
16. Kat Morris's "rules" as discussed in Part 4 are "Garnet never asks questions" and "the story has to stay in Steven's perspective." I love how strict they are about Garnet not asking questions (except in the episode "The Answer," though there have been a couple ~technical~ questions from her; she usually just finds a way to ask a question with a statement, like "tell me what you saw").
17. A great quote from Zuke on the incidentally queer content of the Gems' relationships and gender: "Personally, I'm happy to not have to think, 'I'm writing a character based on my queer experiences.' That would be so hard! I'm just writing from my perspective, and I happen to be queer. I think that's what makes the show feel natural when it comes to that. It's a fine line between defining something so that people are aware it exists, which is so important, but also letting it breathe, so it's not forever contained in a box labeled 'queer media.'"
18. In Part 5, Michaela Dietz relates her experiences as an adoptee to relate to what Amethyst deals with as an "adoptee" into the Crystal Gem family without knowing where she really came from or what it means to be a part of that. She's said this before in some other interviews and panels, so it's not new in general, but it's probably new in print. Deedee Magno Hall, who plays Pearl, obviously relates to Pearl's maternal nature.
19. Tom Scharpling and Charlyne Yi were voice actors that Rebecca specifically had in mind for her characters (Greg and Ruby respectively). Rebecca's illustrated letter to Charlyne explaining Ruby and Sapphire's relationship and Ruby's role on the show is really adorable.
Tumblr media
20. Music nerds like me will very much appreciate the photographed notes on music motifs--the Diamonds each have a solfège syllable and a chord (White is F#M7/Sol, Yellow is BM7/Fa, Blue is EM7/Fa, and Pink is AM7/Mi), and Steven's powers and modes are coded with instruments and styles.
Tumblr media
21. Some world maps provide new possible insights. Greenland in our world is Blueland in theirs. South America is called Pangea. Aqua Mexico is labeled about where Mexico is in our world. India is the Indian Islands. There's an Australia and a New Australia. A big sea in the middle of Asia is called the Tunguska Sea. Rose's Fountain is in Spain or Portugal; the Sky Spire and Strawberry Battlefield are in Norway; the Shooting Star Shrine is in the middle of the drastically different Asian continent; the Galaxy Warp is in the Tunguska Sea; the Lunar Sea Spire is off the coast of Canada; Mask Island is in the Atlantic near Beach City; the Comm Relay is in the Western United States.
22. It was known from interviews that Shelby Rabara (voice of Peridot) is a dancer and provided the foot sounds and coaching to create the short tap number in the episode "Mr. Greg." But what's great is here, there's a visual reference included! Photos of Shelby doing the dance are lined up next to the drawings of Pearl and Steven in the "Mr. Greg" number doing the steps! She poses in dance moves with her husband for the Greg/Pearl dance for "Both of You" too.
Tumblr media
23. There's a really cute story in the last section about Amber Cragg ascending from fan to Crewniverse member through posting Pearl art in response to the pilot and eventually getting contacted to take a board test. That is the kind of thing so many online artists dream of!

Cheers to Vicarious Visions for their passion and dedication to the craft of creating amazing experiences for players. They’ve been wonderful partners with us on this journey. With Destiny 2 PC and Warmind under our collective belts, we’re excited about the future of this collaboration. Before you see their contribution to the world of Destiny,
Creative Director Brent Gibson has a message from his team:
Brent: The team at Vicarious Visions have been fans of Destiny long before we started working with Bungie on this amazing franchise. While working alongside our counterparts at Bungie, we've met the challenge of expanding the Destiny universe and we are beyond thrilled that the day is nearly here! We are honored to have added to this rich world with passionate fans numbering in the millions. This is the kind of thing that game developers dream about. We are fortunate enough to not only add to the gameplay experience, but the franchise as a whole by bringing the legendary Hunter, Ana Bray, to life! She has carried our banner through this entire journey and we can’t wait for you to meet her on this adventure. See you on Mars on May 8!
On Approach We’ve had a lot of fun hosting “Warmind Week” on the blog. There’s a lot we want you to know before you plot a course for Mars. If you missed a beat, here’s a recap. The Destiny 2 Narrative Preview set the stage with five pieces of weblore written by our team.

We have one more Developer Insight planned for release on Friday, May 4, featuring commentary from Design Lead Jacob Benton and Design Lead Ben Wommack on the development of Escalation Protocol. Stay tuned to Bungie.net/Warmind for more!
Patch Note Preview
In previous articles, we’ve been diving deep into the details of design goals for some of the larger changes coming in Season 3. There’s quite a bit more to Destiny Update 1.2.0, so here’s a quick overview of feature changes and bug fixes that will also be deployed next week:
As a short-term solution, Vault space has been increased from 200 to 300 items.
Multi-emote is here! You now can configure all four emote options with player-selected emotes.
The entire emote collection is now always available to you for convenient swapping.
Items in the emote collection have been removed from the Vault, as it's no longer needed.
Guided Games will now feature a Leviathan Guide emblem that tracks the number of raid encounters and raids a player has completed as a Guide.
This emblem rewards a unique aura for 14 days after a player completes a raid as a Guide.
Once a week while the aura is active, guiding a raid to completion grants one Bright Engram.
A new inventory category has been created that will contain pursuit tracking items, such as those for Exotic quests.
Items in the Pursuits category are specific to each character and not shared across the account.
In-game audio settings (sliders between 1 and 10) were added or revised:
SFX Volume
Dialogue/Cinematics Volume
Music Volume
Chat Volume
Weekly lockouts for raid and raid lair rewards are now class-based.
Players running multiple characters of the same class will receive rewards only the first time they run the raid or raid lair in a given week.
Fixed an issue with collections where event emblems would not show up unless players owned Curse of Osiris.
Fixed an issue where players would encounter a black screen upon loading into the Tower.
Fixed an issue where Cayde was offering only one treasure map for Mercury.
The full suite of patch notes will be published on May 8 shortly before Warmind becomes available. We’re currently targeting a 10 AM release, but stay tuned to @Bungie for announcements.
Details on Design
The Exotic Sandbox that you’re familiar with is about to change. We’ve had Senior Sandbox Designer Jon Weisnewski on the hot seat to talk us through the upcoming changes on stream and on the blog. You may have seen some demonstrations of new and improved Exotic weaponry this week. Some of the changes have some nuance to them, so here he is again with the exact details on how your arsenal is evolving:
Jon: Due to a lengthy update this week, I’m going to keep my section short. This’ll be the last Exotic tease from me. After this week, you’ll be playing with all of the new changes!
Risk Runner: We gave Arc Conductor increased resistance to incoming Arc damage (50%) and enabled it in the Crucible. Arc Conductor will now activate when the weapon is stowed, but damage resistance will only work when the weapon is in your hands. This was already a strong gun for PvE. We’re hoping these changes give it a place in some interesting Crucible load outs, strategies, and counters.
youtube
Sweet Business: If you run this gun, you probably just want to shoot forever. We gave it a capped ammo inventory of 999. It’s not forever, but it’s a lot.
youtube
D.A.R.C.I.: This Sniper Rifle now grants 4x damage once locked on a target (exact scaling depends on activity, difficulty, light level delta, etc). It shouldn’t take a master strategist to figure out how this will benefit you in PvE. Any Crucible combat snipers will also want to give this gun a try; it’s got a: 7 round magazine, reduced zoom for closer engagements, and an aim assist stat retuned to be more generous when you haven’t locked a target yet for better results while drag sniping.
youtube
Lastly, I want to quickly acknowledge the whole team, which has been working really hard to get Exotic weapons in Update 1.2.0 ready for you over the past few months. I’ve been the one doing the talking, but it has been far from a solo effort. In particular, there’s a group of testers who has come to the table daily to both ensure these changes are bug-free, and also provide us with bone-breaking player feedback. The team has done a tremendous job at helping dial in a sweet spot for many of the guns. A billion thanks to them!
Mixing Things Up a Little
Tumblr media
Destiny Updates 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4 have brought quality-of-life changes to Destiny 2. Update 1.2.0 is almost here to bring more community-requested features to the table.
Senior Investment Designer Daniel Auchenpaugh has details on the upcoming Heroic strike modifiers and the new Legendary Nightfall Challenge Card.
Dan: In Season 3, we’ve increased the baseline difficulty of Heroic strikes to make combatants more aggressive and make the experience feel more, well, Heroic. Additionally, at any given time the Heroic strike playlist will have three modifiers on it: one Burn (rotates weekly), one Advantage (rotates daily), and one Disadvantage (rotates daily). Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect in those categories:
Burns
Arc Singe: +25% Arc damage increase (outgoing and incoming)
Solar Singe: +25% Solar damage increase (outgoing and incoming)
Void Singe: +25% Void damage increase (outgoing and incoming)
Advantages
Brawler: Double melee recharge rate and damage
Grenadier: Double grenade ability recharge rate and damage
Heavyweight: Triple Power ammo drop rate, double Power weapon damage
Disadvantages
Glass: Players Health and Shields are halved, but recharge rates are doubled.
Blackout: Radar is disabled, and enemies do 20x increased melee damage
Iron: Enemies no longer stagger, and health pools are increased by 50%
Grounded: Players take 5x damage while airborne
Legendary Nightfall Challenge Card
Players will now be able to take their Rare Challenge Card to Xûr and upgrade it to Legendary Challenge Card. Doing so adds more customization options to the card; Legendary cards allow you to select one Burn, One Advantage/Disadvantage, and two additional Disadvantages. With the exception of Glass, all other Advantages and Disadvantages listed above from Heroic Strikes can be applied to the new Challenge Card. Additionally, there are a few Disadvantages unique to the Legendary Challenge Card you can select:
Unique Challenge Card Disadvantages
Extinguish: Return the fireteam to orbit on a wipe
Famine: Ammo drops reduced by 50%
Match Game: Players must match their damage type to the enemy shield type
Attrition: Health regen is slowed greatly, and enemies drop health orbs
Momentum: Health regenerates only when the player is moving
Tumblr media
Nightfall Par Scores Updated
In Destiny Update 1.1.3, we introduced Nightfall emblem variants. As the new Legendary Nightfall Challenge Card will give players more ways to increase their scores, we’re increasing the par scores required to earn specific rewards. Emblem variants, auras, and token reward bonus par scores have been updated to the following:
30k
60k
110k
200k
As a reminder, when you reach new record par scores for a specific Nightfall, you increase your chances to earn the associated Nightfall Unique Reward! We’ll be watching community scores closely once Update 1.2.0 is released, and we’ll let you know if any adjustments need to be made.
Prismatic Matrix
In the January Development Update, we spoke of shifting the balance of vanity content in favor of activity rewards, rather than purely through Eververse. We first addressed this balance by adding vanity rewards to Crucible, Nightfall, strike, and raid activities. To further improve the overall Eververse experience, a new feature we’re calling the
Prismatic Matrix will debut in Season 3. This feature has been developed with three key goals in mind:
Give players more control over how they earn Eververse items
Offer a more predictable path each week that guarantees access to specific items
Drop fewer duplicate items
At release, the Prismatic Matrix will feature 10 Eververse items from Season 3 each week it is active. Each item within the Prismatic Matrix is on a knockout list, which means every player is guaranteed to receive all featured items for a given week by the tenth activation. Earning items via Bright Engrams, Bright Dust, or previous Matrix activations will also knock rewards off the list. In turn, each activation guarantees players an item that they have never previously acquired.
Tumblr media
With your first well-rested level-up each week, you’ll earn a Prismatic Facet, allowing one free use of the Prismatic Matrix. Prismatic Facets stack up to 3, so make sure to have proper inventory space before earning a rank-up on a given week. Players can also purchase more activations for 200 Silver each. Outside of the Prismatic Matrix, players may continue to earn Bright Engrams each time they level up, and they can still purchase these engrams if they want a chance to get everything from the Season 3 catalog. Additionally, we’re increasing the number of items available from Tess each week with Bright Dust, from 14 to 18 items.
We want to continue experimenting and evolving Eververse to improve player experience, and give more paths to earn Eververse rewards. Please give us your feedback once Season 3 begins, as we’re dedicated to improving these systems moving forward.
Run of Show
With each update,Destiny Player Support is on standby to ensure the package has been delivered to your platform without issue. The following information will guide you to your first steps in Hellas Basin:

11 AM PDT– (1800 UTC)
Destiny 2 server maintenance is scheduled to conclude
Destiny 2 Hotfix 1.2.0.1 will be available to download and install
Storage Requirements
Destiny 2, including all updates, has the following storage requirements for each platform: Platform | Destiny File Size | Storage Space Needed for Download PlayStation 4 | 53 GB | 71 GB Xbox One | 50 GB | 50 GB PC | 48 GB | 68 GB
Destiny Update 1.2.0 Known IssuesPrior to the release of Update 1.2.0, the following issues have been identified and are currently under investigation:
Anti-Extinction Greaves: The female Titan’s Dead Orbit leg armor piece, Anti-Extinction Greaves, may display a small visual issue.
Exotic Masterworks: Once upgraded to a Masterwork, an Exotic weapon or armor piece will not display as a Masterwork when viewed from an Exotic engram preview.
Strike Playlist: Players are not able to matchmake into strikes from an expansion they do not own. Players will receive a prompt to purchase the needed expansion if they attempt to join a fireteam of players who own an expansion that they do not own themselves.
Warmind:
Some quest items in the Warmind campaign may not show up in the loot stream of all fireteam members. However, the quest item should still be added to the inventories of all fireteam members.
If players have a full engram inventory, they may not be able to accept some vendor quest items until they make space in their inventory.
Exotic Armor Tooltips: We are aware of an issue in which the perk text on Warmind Exotic armor tooltips appears in a different color than on similar gear pieces. This does NOT mean that players need to unlock these perks to be able to access them.
If you encounter any issues when playing Season 3 or Warmind content, please post a report to the #Help forum.

Why AI & Automation Are Actually Friends to Design
Tumblr media
Artificial intelligence. Just hearing the phrase has been a trigger for many in the technology world since that creepy Haley Joel Osment film circa 2001. But more recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning strike fear into the hearts of skilled workers for an entirely different reason: job security, or lack thereof.
Smart-home devices, streaming services, self-checkouts, even Google searches are ways that artificial intelligence has seeped into everyday life, exemplifying the abilities of computers and machines to master both simple and complex tasks. In some instances, these technological advancements make our lives easier, but for some people, their proliferation has meant job loss and skill replacement. There’s no wonder that when artificial intelligence starts being mentioned along with web design and site creation, the spidey senses of designers all over the world start tingling.
designers think outside the box, something that AI just can’t do
But let’s get real about what AI and automation really mean for designers for a second. Talented designers with busy schedules should view these advancements as virtual assistants. For some small businesses on a limited budget, the websites that artificial intelligence can pump out might be fine…for a while. However, as businesses grow, change, require updating and customization to adapt to their customer base, the expertise of creative and talented designers will always be needed. Even the best AI that we see today is limited by evaluating, replicating, and revising what already exists. It may be able to mix 1,000 different color schemes into 10 million potential combinations, but great designers think outside the box, something that AI just can’t do.
In fact, rather than being scared of automation, designers ought to embrace automation and artificial intelligence as a way to unleash their creative thinking. Delegate repetitive, straightforward tasks to the right software, and suddenly you have time to bring your best ideas to the table and push the boundaries of your own innovation.
Where AI has Failed in Design
The ultimate goal of artificial intelligence and automation in design work is a grand vision that has yet to be realised.
Consider the case of The Grid, which began as a crowdfunding campaign in 2014. The “revolutionary” product posed itself as an artificial intelligence solution for building thoughtfully, yet automatically, designed websites in five minutes. Research “Reviews of the Grid” in any search engine and you’ll be met with scathing criticism with only some small praise sprinkled in. Most of the initial users cite underwhelming results, the feeling of being duped by the Grid’s marketing tactics, nonsensical placement of text, and ultimately, the Grid being a complete waste of money for the resulting product. Even at the low cost of $100, compared to hiring a talented designer, most users felt their investment was wasted.
For the AI capabilities that exist now, most small business owners, or those looking to put together a simple website, are better off using drag and drop site builders (Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, etc) that have been around for ages. Even so, there are plenty of businesses still willing to hire designers to take this simple task off their plate due to a lack of technical expertise or lack of time. And let’s be honest, are there even enough talented (keyword here!) designers out there to keep up with the millions of websites created every year, without each one working themselves to death?
Where Automation Shines for Designers
Fortunately for good designers, it appears for now that the days of artificial intelligence completely taking over their jobs is a fantasy. However, what AI and automation do offer designers is a solid starting point for success, eliminating much of the lower-level grunt work that most designers would rather skip anyway.
Even well-received AI website builders like Firedrop still require a basic eye for design and specialised knowledge to produce truly unique, high-converting, and user-friendly websites. Tools and practices that designers should adopt are the artificial intelligence and automation resources that will help them do their jobs better, faster, and leave them with more time to focus on project elements that AI cannot accomplish on its own.
Bridging the Gap Between Designers and Developers
Well-established brands are likely to already have design systems in place that guide the creation of new elements across their digital profiles whether on social media, various mobile apps, or different sections of a website. But even in large corporations — excepting those who have perfected the process — there’s often a breakdown between a designer’s vision and resulting product from the developers. It stems from the basic difference in how they each approach their work and the limitations of the systems they use.
While component libraries — or even full design systems for that matter — won’t reconcile every question, they provide both developers and designers a source of truth to work from that both parties can understand. Design collaboration tools like Invision and Visme, specifically, keep designers and developers on the same page with automated version saving and code-friendly workflows.
Understanding the Consumer
I don’t suggest using artificial intelligence to produce content for your site
Digging into and understanding the behaviours and habits of site users is a relatively new component of site design, but offers invaluable insights. Tools like HotJar, Mouseflow, or Smartlook make it simple to see holes or leaks in your conversion funnels, detect which page elements users are interacting with, and which they’re not interested in to refine the look and feel of a page for maximum conversions. Even though these tools provide the data, it still takes a keen eye and understanding of design to implement the right changes to improve site performance.
Site content is another way that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve our understanding of customer behaviour and improve site performance for individual users. I don’t suggest using artificial intelligence to produce content for your site, no matter how much the results have improved. However, static landing pages or a single set of further reading recommendations are unlikely to appeal to the majority of site visitors. Artificial intelligence tools like CliClap and Personyze instantly collect and analyse consumer data to provide dynamic, personalised experiences that drive more leads and encourage conversions. Creative designers will also learn from this data to improve customer experience with other pages or elements throughout the site.
Removing Distracting, Time-Sucking Administrative Tasks
Because “artificial intelligence” has become a term with such negative connotations, we often overlook the simple way that AI actually makes our work lives better and easier. Machine learning in email filtering is a great example of this. Consider a simple interface like a Gmail inbox. We have the option to mark certain senders as spam or as important, and our inbox learns that type of communication is and isn’t useful to the user. Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, and more all take cues from the user behaviour of liking a certain song, artists, or genre of music to build customised playlists. There are a myriad of ways that artificial intelligence and its branches of disciplines merge with our everyday lives.
Some of the most useful automations for business, and especially for designers, are related to the administrative tasks that frequently take time away or distract from more pressing projects. A perfect example of automation that can relieve stress and cut down on mindless work is an email autoresponder. I’ve always found that having time blocked off in my calendar to tackle complex or important projects helps me to focus on the task at hand and be more efficient. In order to more effectively block out my time, closing my email and setting an autoresponder to reply to all incoming emails serves two purposes:
Lets those trying to get in touch with me know that I only check my email at certain times of the day and that my response may not be immediate — tempering their expectations of when they might hear from me.
Relieves my personal stress of being tethered to my inbox, splitting my focus, and also saves the time of having to initially respond to each email individually.
This is just one simple way to use automation in your email, although there are many others to explore.
While Zapier isn’t the only workflow automation service on the market, it’s probably the most well known. Workflow automation reduces time spent on mind-numbing, repetitive tasks and helps designers connect apps that might not natively work together. Do you keep a task list in Todoist? Set up a Zap, then create a task in Todoist anytime someone mentions you on Asana or assigns you a task in Trello.
This is especially helpful for freelance designers who work with multiple clients across various project management platforms. The potential for automation to relieve unnecessary mental overhead for designers is nearly limitless.
Don’t be Afraid of AI, Embrace It
The bottom line of this brief overview of artificial intelligence and automation in design is that this emerging technology isn’t something designers should be scared of. In fact, it’s something to welcome with open arms because ultimately it can make our jobs, and our lives, better. Leave the monotonous tasks of collecting and analysing huge amounts of data or administrative minutiae to the machines; they can handle it.
Save the interesting, creative, abstract work for the talented designers who can turn AI recommendations into unique and intuitive digital experiences. Making the relationship between artificial intelligence and design symbiotic will yield the best results for every entity involved: the business, the AI, and yes, even the designer.

Creator’s update #1
Hey guys! So I’ve decided to start actually blogging on this blog and tell a bit about the various things I’m working on, share WIPs, music I’ve been digging recently etc. I realise that I rarely post anything, so it seems like I’m super inactive - which is totally not true, I just have so much stuff going on and take a long time to finish things, and I’m also pretty picky about what I put up online lol! For the sake of keeping those of you interested in the loop, I’m gonna start this series of creator’s updates in which I’ll update y’all on the progress I’ve made on my various creative projects. The goal is to give an update a few times a month (hopefully lol)!
This past while I’ve been super inactive in the writing department, but very much productive in the art department, so my writing update will be mostly a summary of what I’ve been doing the past few years up until this point.
Mood: Feelin’ real good cuz my parents finally brought my comfy double bed over from my mum’s place this past weekend, which means no more sleeping on the couch yaaaaaas.
Music I’ve been digging recently:
Skye Sweetnam - Boyhunter So, the other day I randomly listened to this song on my way home from work, and I totally realised that Skye Sweetnam is the perfect voice for my character Caitlyn, and this song totally embodies what Caitlyn is all about lmaoooo. (The song isn’t very accurate to the time period Caitlyn lives in, but it’s super accurate to her character essence and personality, and I just find that so lit hahahah)
Fallulah - Out of It This song is basically my MC’s theme song?? It’s performed by a Danish artist and was super popular in Denmark a few years back as it was the theme tune to a Danish tv show (a show I loved!). The lyrics are just so Daniel, it’s not even funny. It mostly fits his mental state at the beginning of Renaissance.
Girl’s Day - Love Again Ugh I just love the tune of this song so much, I can’t really place my finger on it, the emotion is just so great. I love the guitar riff especially, and Girl’s Day is a four member girl group, so it’s one of those songs where I can imagine my main girls Annaliese, Caitlyn, Mary and Serena singing as each member lmao.
Nine Muses - Remember Another four member group now, this song is also one where I can imagine my main girls singing each member’s part lmao, and having that aspect to a song always makes it a little better for me! Forreal tho, this new release from Nine Muses slays, and we all know it. The music video haunts me.
Sistar - Lonely This song makes me sad and happy all at once, cuz I’m not ready to say goodbye to Sistar, but at the same time this ending is probably the best one any fan could’ve wished for because there was no drama or anger, just well wishes and hope for the future. I know these girls will go far, and this song just pulls at all my heart strings man. The melody of the bridge and chorus, Dasom and Soyu’s parts in particular, really works for me. And yeah, Sistar has four members too, and once again I can picture my main girls singing as each member lmao. It’s a thing I have, okay?
Moana OST - We Know The Way + Know Who You Are I recently watched this movie, and while I sorta felt like the plot was a bit rushed and tropey in many ways, I totally adored the visuals and the MUSIC OMG. These two songs are my favourite, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s vocals never miss, and Auli’i Cravalho’s high note is gorgeous! Also dat choir in the background tho, and in context with the movie scene that song just makes me irrationally emotional mkay. (That ending was the best twist ever, it definitely lifted the story up a notch for me!)
Writing
So I’m writing a book! You might have seen me mention it a few times already on here, but I’ve not really shared much insight into my process or what sort of book this actually is (other than talking about characters here and there), and as I’ve not been making huge progress lately (I’m in an art state of mind duuuh), I thought that I’d keep this section short and sweet, with a bit of an introduction into what my book project is all about.
I call it a book project because I don’t feel comfortable just calling it a book when I don’t have rights to publish. Technically my book is a fanfiction based on the horror video game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and as such I don’t own copyright of the small percentage of my story that features the canon elements. However, I take this as seriously as anyone else would writing their own book, because I’ve poured my entire heart and soul into it, and the vast majority of the content (plot, characters and world) is my original creation. It’s my own little big project lol!
You might be familiar with the game, and even if you aren’t, that’s not a prerequisite for reading my book since everything is introduced and set up just as in any regular book. The protagonist is an Englishman named Daniel, and we know little of his past through the game. I won’t go into too much detail on what the game is about (if you really wanna know, you can look it up), but the point of my book is to explore the protagonist’s life from his childhood up to the events of the game and beyond, and afterwards connect his story to the game sequels featuring other protagonists within the same universe. It’s a bit complex and elaborate, which is just the way I like it!
As the games are set at various points during the Victorian era (game #1 is set in Prussia 1839, game #2 is set in France 1858, and game #3 is set in England 1899), you can probably guess that the entire thing will be pretty long. That’s why I’m making it a series! I have at least seven books planned so far (though there’ll definitely be more, since I’m not near the end of the timeline I need to cover yet), and I currently have the first book written and am writing the sequel - however, the first book will need a complete rewrite once I’m finished with book #2, because I’ve since developed and changed a lot of stuff, and I have many new interesting ideas for a more fleshed out version of the first book. Still, the fanfic version is available online, so if you’d like to read it, you can find it here. You’ll get a pretty good idea of the general story and the characters, but keep in mind that it’s super outdated and will be very different after my rewrite!
For reference, this is the list of books that I’ve planned (and titled) so far, so you can keep up with what book of my series I’m talking about at any given point:
I - Amnesia: Memoirs
II - Amnesia: Renaissance
III - Amnesia: Voyage
IV - Amnesia: Noir
V - Amnesia: Encore
VI - Amnesia: Rogue
So what I’m doing right now with this project is revisions. Uuuuggghhhhh. Yes, that’s right, I’m stuck in revision hell. I’ve not even finished the first draft of Renaissance yet (I know, sacrilege, writing blasphemy, don’t start your damn edits until you’ve finished your draft dumbass), but I had some pretty major changes to make, changes so big that it would be a waste of time and effort to go on drafting without implementing them first. Mainly the changes are surrounding 1) a change of ages of my main cast (I aged many characters up a few years), and 2) changing and figuring out the specifics of the illness which my MC’s sister, Hazel, is afflicted with. She’s not such a major character in Renaissance, but she plays a big role in Memoirs, and since I had all these new ideas for the rewrite of that, I wanted to implement the ripple effects in the second book so it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle to edit later when Renaissance is a finished 3-400k first draft lmao (I have a lot of words okay?). These changes mostly affect the early chapters of my book - chapters I wrote about three years ago, which means that these early chapters really need a face-lift. In addition to the age and illness change, I wanna revise the first five chapters by cutting the fluff and tightening up the beginning so we get to the action a tiny bit faster. Adding to the fact that these early chapters are three years old, the prose also needs an almost complete rewrite. So long story short, all of the edits are taking a long ass time, and I’m not having a good time lmao. Doesn’t help that I had to stop drafting right at one of the juiciest scenes in my book?!?!? (that’s a lie, it gets juicier, but I was just getting to the real good stuff yanno?)
(Side note: for someone who said that I’d keep this short, it sure turned out long lmao. I just have too many damn words.)
Chapters edited: 2/16 (working on 3 right now and it’s an effin’ pain)
Current total word count: 120,591
Current total chapter count: 17 (the number will go down to 16 once I finish the revisions, as I’m merging two chapters)
Look at all the dumb shit I still have to edit for chapter 3. Look at it.
Tumblr media
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Art
Man, I’ve been doing a lot of artwork recently, and by a lot, I don’t mean that I’ve finished any.
I think I’ve been focused on developing my actual drawing skills rather than making finished illustrations, because I’ve been so overwhelmed with inspiration and I’ve wanted to try out drawing a bunch of different motives, so my mind is on a lot of different art projects at once, and I’m making baby steps of progress on each of them because I just wanna do everything lmao. I should probably take a step back and settle on one thing at a time, but at the same time, I feel like this is working for me because I’m so inspired and motivated and super excited for every single art piece; I don’t feel myself losing interest in any of them, in fact I just feel like my switching between different artworks keeps every piece fresh and interesting for me, yanno?
So here’s one thing that I’ve been slowly chipping away at for the past few months. I’m drawing a full body group picture of my main cast from Renaissance!
Tumblr media
I’ve drawn the anatomy sketches of all the male characters (though I’m debating whether I should add some others), and now I’m adding the female characters one by one, so these are not all of the characters yet. But man, I just love seeing the characters side by side? The variety in their body language, body types and heights is just so interesting to look at, and it’ll be even better once I get around to actually adding their facial features, expressions, hair, attire, and then colouring them as well omg! I’m a sucker for this kind of thing, blame it on @juliajm15 and her amazing diverse character designs.
It’s gonna be a huge picture with a lot of characters, and I’m stoked for it!! This is a piece which I hope I’ll be able to show ya’ll the progress of bit by bit in every few updates. (also, if you feel somewhat familiar with some of my characters, you’re welcome to make guesses at who’s who (; )
Another project I’m working on is making official character portraits of my main cast (and possibly minor characters as well). I just think it’s nice to have official portraits as reference for anyone who’d like to see what the characters look like, and also for myself for whenever I need to refresh the specific features and expression of each character. It’s just a nice thing that satiates my very Type A personality lmao!
Tumblr media
So the characters above are Owen Wright (to the left) , Daniel’s puppy bff with the fluffy hair, and then from left to right I’m colouring the portraits of the Armstrong siblings: Caleb, Caitlyn and Tristan. Their dad is a duke! n.n Caleb is the oldest, Caitlyn the youngest, and Tristan is the bland middle child. He’s a little brat LOL but I still love him.
Also, due to this glorious reference I found, I finally figured out how to draw Daniel. Bless this model, I never knew I wanted Daniel to have big puffy lips, but apparently I do.
Tumblr media
He looks actually nice now? Which is nice? I’m amazed. Also his hair? I can never draw his hair, but this looks nice so yay? Also, I dunno why I never draw clothes on him, I guess I’m just lazy lol, but he’s gonna need to wear clothes for the official character portrait soooo... That’s a thing I’m gonna have to do.
Now that I’ve figured out his features, it’s gonna be fun to remodel all his family members accordingly. I sense that he’ll have gotten those cute puffy lips from his mum meheheheh.
I also did some Disney fanart of my two favourite Disney ladies; Esmeralda and Kida <3
Tumblr media
I actually never really draw fanart any more, it’s been yeeeaaaars since I did, and when I used to do it, I was always very particular about staying as true to the original art style as possible. But now that I’ve spent the past couple years focusing on developing my own art style, I actually decided not to care about that so much and just draw the characters the way I’m used to drawing my own, and lo and behold - it looks pretty accurate to the Disney style?? I assumed that the characters would end up looking very different, but other than the eyes being smaller I feel like they look the exact same lmao. It’s interesting to me, because even when I used to do fanart, I usually did so of Japanese art and manga, not of Disney or any other western art. Also, I don’t consider my own style very Disney, but it pleases me a lot that the characters look so much like themselves even in my art style! The most important thing to me is to capture the essence of the character anyway, so any fan can recognise the character they love so much n.n
So that’s about it for this round! I’ve been working on other things as well, but I’d rather not disclose them to the public just yet - perhaps later, when I’ve made more progress, or (gasp!) actually finished something!! Bahahah, with the many things I’m working on, hell will freeze over before that day comes. *cries*
Youtube
I’m adding this Youtube section because, in addition to writing and doing artwork, I also like to record vocal covers (mainly of kpop songs, but I’ll do anything I’m in the mood for at any given point), aaaaand as of today I'm gonna be uploading speedpaints as well! Which is probably good since I don’t upload my covers nearly as often as I finish them lmao.
I’ve not uploaded any new covers recently (though I really should, I do have some covers lying around on my laptop mwerp), but I’m gonna list a couple of my favourite covers I have on my channel here so you can take a listen if you’d like!
youtube

And today I uploaded my very first speedpaint to my channel, so check that out if you’re interested in that sort of stuff! It’s the process of my Christmas portrait piece for Serena. I aim to be more consistent with uploads since I have a few unedited recordings lying around, so keep an eye out for that!
youtube
If you’ve read this far, thank you for sticking around and taking a look at my work, even if it’s only in WIP form. I wanted to start doing these updates because I’ve been watching my friends do them for a long time, and I always love reading their writing updates; they motivate me so much to get working on my own stuff, and I just wanna be able to perhaps do something similar for anyone else who’s watching me out there. So thank you sincerely to @coffeeandcalligraphy, @sarahkelsiwrites and @shaelinwrites for sharing your process with the world and being such an inspiration to me and many others, I love seeing you all make progress on your own projects <3
So that was all for this round, I hope you guys enjoyed a little sneak peek into what I’ve been working on! Until next time, folks!

April's Featured Game: ARCADEA
DEVELOPER(S): Aishin ENGINE: RPGMaker VX Ace   GENRE: Fantasy, Adventure, Puzzle WARNINGS:  N/A SUMMARY: In the world of Arcadea, people can accomplish their dreams. How? Through video games of course! Everybody who lives in Arcadea has a special arcade machine they can visit in their dreams that lets them fulfill their strongest wishes. Whether it’s to go on an adventure, or make friends, or fall in love, or solve a mystery, or completely start a new life, there’s a game made just for them.. The game follows Maisie, a new arrival to Arcadea. She’s not very interested in all this gaming stuff; her only goal is to find an important person. But along the way, she can’t help but be roped into other people’s problems. She also can’t help that the arcade machines seem to glitch around her. A lot.
Our Interview With The Dev Team Below The Cut!
Introduce yourself!  *Hello everyone! My name is Aishin and I'm the developer of ARCADEA! I have been in the community for about 8 years. I started working with RPGMaker in 2014 and played around with some horror game concepts that never came to fruition. I realized that drawing dark or creepy things and trying to scare people wasn't really up my alley. After failing to make a horror game, I attempted a more happy and relaxing concept and was much more satisfied with the results.
What is your project about? What inspired you to create your game initially? *Aishin: ARCADEA is a fantasy story that mainly involves adventuring through different strange lands, solving puzzles, and doing quests. In between the adventuring segments, the player plays little mini-games on arcade machines that act as foreshadowing as well as introspective character explorations. It's a game about the safety as well as the troubles of escapism. It's also games within a game and that's always fun right? My initial inspiration was from seeing other RPG Maker games. Being in the community and seeing other games being developed made me strive to make one of my own!
How long have you been working on your project? *Aishin: A little less than one year so far. The story and characters have been through many revisions and changes. I'm happy to say that I am fully satisfied at the final revision and I will be bringing the world to life as best as I can~
Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Aishin: My game was influenced by fairy tales, mainly Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid. I also was heavily inspired by the MOTHER series and its quirky humor, as well as very meta games such as OneShot, Libretta, and Undertale. Also To the Moon, as it was the first RPG Maker game I have played that was not horror. Games that, after playing them, makes you kind of sit there... in wonder.
Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them?   *Aishin: The biggest challenge was actually finding time to sit down and work on the game. I'm about to finish my third year of pharmacy school and the workload leaves me too tired to even pick up my tablet pen sometimes. However, every moment I actually do spend on the game is very satisfying and I am getting faster and more efficient with everything: spriting, mapping, drawing, eventing, checking for bugs, etc. I'm just waiting for school to be over so I can start putting my all into this game! Oh and also debugging. Oh man do I hate script conflicts.
Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Aishin: Many many MANY aspects. Originally, the game wasn't even going to have arcade machines! Crazy stuff. After the addition of the mini-games, everything just...happened. The characters all got fleshed out backstories, the main character actually became a CHARACTER rather than a player's avatar, more games and puzzles were made, the world became more dense with 'stuff'.... The story became simpler. But the actual themes and concepts around the story became more real.
What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? *Aishin: I'm the sole developer of the game. I have a couple of friends that act as my beta testers. They also help with edits, proofreading, and ideas. I am planning on finding a composer in the future for music compositions (the one thing I can't do by myself :c).
What was the best part of developing the game? *Aishin: For me, it's seeing everything coming together in action! Seeing my character sprites moving around on a map I made, saying dialogue that I wrote is such a fulfilling feeling. And making the maps as beautiful as I can is pretty fun! And then a bug happens and you just sit in a corner and cry. loljk
Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Aishin: I wish I learned Ruby before starting this project. I had to learn as I go but unfortunately that lead to random script issues. I had to request a friend's help to solve them and luckily it was nothing too bad. The good news is, I am now able to resolve script conflicts on my own! (And with google)
Once you finish your project, do you plan to explore game's universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Aishin: This will probably be a stand-alone game. The story and characters have a definite beginning and end. I feel like there's no need to expand on this world any further.
What do you look most forward to upon/after release? *Aishin: I would like to see people play it. Whether they like it or not, I hope I get some critique on the game. It would be nice if people really enjoyed playing it c: Of course, more sleep is another thing to look forward to.
Is there something you're afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game?  *Aishin: GAME BREAKING BUGS. Also I really hope there aren't any weird story plot holes...
Question from last month's featured dev: What are some practical tricks you've learned in RPG Maker that novice (or even advanced) developers might not know? *Aishin: - If you want to make the screen pan, make your character transparent and have them walk where it's needed (have a dummy sprite act as your character in the meantime). - Take advantage of the addition and subtract effects of pictures when doing lighting for maps (especially parallax maps). Also you can have the light or shadows fade in and out by using the 'Move Picture' event and adjusting opacity. - USE THE '\!' BEFORE ANY DIALOGUE CHOICES THE PLAYER HAS TO MAKE. This prevents the player from accidentally clicking through too fast and picking an answer that they don't want! I can't tell you how many endings I messed up on getting because of this.
Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Aishin: Definitely try! I would start with a free program like RPGMaker Lite and play around with it. I think what turns most people away is feeling that the RPG Maker program is very complex. But it's actually pretty easy to pick up on! Also, starting small is very helpful. Making a ginormous, long game immediately is pretty daunting, especially if you're inexperienced (although some people have managed to do it). I would at least know a little bit about events and scripts before jumping into a huge project. And if in the end, you feel that making games isn’t for you, you at least get some experience and knowledge out of it. As well as a greater appreciation for games and the work/process that goes into game development!
We mods would like to thank Aishin for agreeing to our interview! We believe that featuring the developer and their creative process is just as important as featuring the final product. Hopefully this Q&A segment has been an entertaining and insightful experience for everyone involved!
Remember to check out ARCADEA if you haven’t already! See you next month!

In “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” Betty Smith’s 1943 autobiographical novel about growing up poor in the early 20th century, the public school that the heroine attends is a pretty bleak place. But “there was a great golden glory lasting a half-hour each week when Mr. Morton came to Francie’s room to teach music.”
He taught them classical music, the book continues, without telling them what they were learning, setting his own words to the great works. “Little boys whistled part of Dvorak’s New World Symphony as they played marbles. When asked the name of the song, they’d reply ‘Oh, “Going Home.”’ They played potsy, humming ‘The Soldiers’ Chorus’ from Faust, which they called ‘Glory.’”
Francie also looked forward to the visits of the drawing teacher; “these two visiting teachers were the gold and silver sun-splash in the great muddy river of school days.”
Arts education in schools has introduced many children to great painters and great music, and helped them through their first dance steps or tentative musical endeavors. It can serve as a bright spot in the schoolchild’s day or week, a class that brings in beauty, color and joy, and which is not about testing.
These subjects are often under threat either from budget cuts or from the inexorable demands of academic testing and “accountability,” but insights from neuroscience suggest that arts education can play additional important roles in how children learn.
Paul T. Sowden, a professor of psychology at the University of Winchester in England, warned that in Britain, as in the United States, arts and humanities subjects have suffered in recent years as the emphasis shifted to science and technology. It's important, he said, that arts education be available equally to everyone. But arts education, he said, is a chance to build resilience and determination in children, as well as to help them master complex skills.
Arts education encompasses many disciplines: “I’m talking about everything from music, drama, dance, design, visual arts,” Dr. Sowden said. And the goal goes beyond the specific subjects, he said: “You’re looking for opportunities in the arts education context to encourage children to ask questions, to use their imaginations, but also to approach their work in a systematic, disciplined way.”
When children are younger, arts education helps develop their capacity for collaboration, for creativity, and even for asking questions. As they get older, he said, “their executive function is much more developed, their ability to sustain attentional tasks is much greater.” For them, arts education can offer the chance to refine and polish a skill over time, or revise a project until it is as good as it can be.
Sometimes the arts are taught in a very set curriculum, Dr. Sowden said, but there are real advantages to teaching in a more exploratory way, where children can experiment. And both parents and teachers can encourage children to explore, he said; “that’s the way you get the biggest benefit, not just learning to reproduce a particular work by Monet or dance sequence.”
The skills that children master in arts education, he said, may be transferable to other curricular areas.
Mariale Hardiman, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education, where she directs the neuro-education initiative, was interested in how children do — and don’t — retain what they learn in school. “A lot of the information we teach doesn’t stick.”
What she saw as a school principal, she said, was that when arts were integrated into the curriculum, “learning became more visible.” Teachers told her “the children would remember the information better when they taught it through the arts.”
So though arts education has many other benefits, she said, such as creative thinking, her studies have focused on children’s memory for academic subjects, comparing what children remembered 10 weeks after material was taught. Researchers wrote two different versions of the curriculum, matched for content and timing, both involving active learning, but one including arts education. For example, in an arts integrated curriculum, students would sketch their vocabulary words, or learn some of the material as songs, or act out molecular motion with their bodies.
The children who had learned the material in the curriculum that made use of the arts remembered more, and the effect was largest among the children who were less strong academically, the “lower performers.”
“We found the biggest difference with children at the lower level of achievement,” Dr. Hardiman said. “Could this be at least one lever for closing an achievement gap?” After all, these are often the students who are condemned to dreary drill and repetition, in hopes of bringing them to a higher level: “What if the arts are a lever of school reform, better than the drill and kill we do with remedial students?”
In a 2019 article in the journal Trends in Neuroscience and Education, Dr. Hardiman and her colleagues described the results of a randomized controlled trial looking at fifth-graders who were taught science content, some using techniques from arts education, and others with more conventional instruction. The researchers again saw an effect on the students with more limited reading skills; they remembered more science if they had learned with the integrated arts methods.
So why might the arts integration help children’s memory? “Arts allow for elaboration, allow for repetition,” Dr. Hardiman said. “Memory is certainly enhanced through repetition, the more you revisit something, the more you remember it.” And the visual and performing arts also allow children to elaborate in creative ways on the material.
The advantage of learning through the arts will come as no surprise to anyone who grew up with the “Fifty Nifty United States” song or learned how a bill becomes a law from Schoolhouse Rock. Some of today’s children are learning history from the lyrics of “Hamilton.”
I suddenly remembered a rather mournful tune from decades ago, in high school, when a science teacher told us we would be tested on the elements with a charge of positive 2 and a friend and I set them to a chant; I can still name them, in order, and when it comes to chemistry, I am definitely one of the less able students.
“Arts integration should not replace arts education,” Dr. Hardiman said. She suggested a “three-legged stool,” with one leg being arts education, including dedicated classes in visual and performing arts, and the second arts and cultural offerings, such as artists coming into the school or visits to museums. The third leg would be the integration of the arts into the teaching of other subjects.
“Parents can easily do simple arts activities with kids,” Dr. Hardiman said, and can incorporate these ideas around homework or just in spending time together. Maybe it would help to put the multiplication tables into a song, or ask children to sketch their ideas, or use body poses to show the emotion that a character in a story is feeling.
Ronald Beghetto, a professor of educational psychology and the director of Innovation House at the University of Connecticut, studies creativity in educational settings, which, he said, “can be manifest across all different disciplines.”
“We tend, as adults, to overplan and overstructure young people’s experiences,” Dr. Beghetto said. While structure is important, he said, so is “letting kids determine their own problems to solve, their own ways to solve them.”
Arts education, he said, can provide those structured opportunities that foster creativity.
“Working through some creative endeavor, we’re really resolving uncertainty,” he said. “We approach the blank canvas.”

Discourse of Monday, 31 May 2021
Have a good weekend! Well here: you must email me a copy to me immediately. Or has not simply turned that in city where I think it's a way of being responses to British colonialism, misogyny based on nine weeks of mandatory section attendance and participation based on Yeats's poetry may tie into developments in a chapter of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment or can get people to discuss. They should also be much much much more apparent to you, and so forth. You could theoretically also file a petition to get back to then? In other cases, the exclusion, the upshot is that I think that, with Stephen's rather strained relationship with his own thoughts even better on assignments and exams than students who wanted classes for which you've already laid the groundwork, and your structure for the comparison is worth 100%, not a circulating, coin. Try thinking about for the week preceding the section meeting.
Selected Musical Performances arrangement of the opening paragraphs create a sense of the entire class in that section were present last night, but not the most important thing for a more luggage than you have also explained this to some comparatively minor matters will help you be absent from class on the final graded, you got up in front of the audio or video recording of his other published work. By defining your key terms more specifically to represent your thoughts, and, in assessing this, if you don't show up, then, unless you're definitely ready to go with Fergus? Don't forget to mention this: Don't forget to bring up from those poets: Eavan Boland these poems can be found on the poetry handout: discussion of The Butcher Boy, so this is the lack of motherhood has affected him as a whole was quite on-point font, etc.
Don't forget a blue book. Etc. Ultimately, I think that they didn't cover but that it would help to open people up to your analysis more: I think it's good and it shows in places I know to and the historical background, might be productive. The joke, often from potatoes though the Irish, or one that they'd been thinking about why you received the grade with the story as an analytical lens, and overall, and what is being transmitted, specifically, you might mean. So, you might profitably take either of these are genuinely small and have a bunch of meetings early in your position, I think. Sorry to take a look at last week's presentations has taken longer than I had in talking about why they appeal to you; I'm just noting that there are several All in all, this means, essentially, is not caught up on my way I'd be happy to discuss with the series or the argument that gets beaten into people's heads extensively during their senior year. But I feel that you have any questions at all. Of course. I talked to the poem and its background.
I will of course, what does it express their situation, I think that students have jobs and sports and family emergencies and about his horror that feels in response to some comparatively minor errors, but my own favorite parts from that part is going to be helpful. Or you could merge the recitation errors, but your margins are wider than one of the entire weekend as one of three people reciting from McCabe in your discussion and which are a lot of reasons for missing a scheduled recitation which will result in a lot of historical analysis, and giving other people to talk in section. It's likely, but without pushing their interpretive insights far enough in other respects. I'll probably advise him to copy me on the midterm scores until Tuesday, getting people to discuss whether he could make it easier for me which works better for you to discuss Francie's stream of consciousness is potentially very productive. Again, thank you for putting so much thought and writing are as nuanced and perceptive about the relative value of each? If you don't. I offer the fact that you're feeling better!
Again, thank you for doing a good job here with a grade you received the professor's English 150 course, you want to, then the quickest way to push your readings are excellent choices—but that you're scheduled to recite because a I believe you, but leveraged them well to the group. Question that good papers address the question of what I'm not aware of: you would not be exhaustively articulated in the poem's ideas needed a vocal pause in order to do this metaphorically, though, that makes a logico-narrative and value? The Search for the work for you if he had an A-for the final itself, you were nervous and a departure from your own, and will look forward to your own project in order to fully demonstrate solid payoffs for those meetings; it is necessary, then left my office SH 2432E, provided that you should go if you want to recite. You demonstrate in your section, this could conceivably have paid off for you sometimes avoid the question from another angle: What is the issue from all sides and develops according to the bleeded potato-stalks to the connections between Ulysses and other course components to get some informed ideas here, all of the discussion to take away as your main points. See you Tuesday and/or else/the show interact with that kind of a particular point, and that you can bring your luggage in my office SH 2432E, provided that you whould need to sit down at any of my sections at the third year in grad school is at least the requisite amount of evidence: a custom brought to the poem and started working on it. Thank you. There are a few ideas about what audiovisual and historical texts might support that particular poem would be very different. I'm thinking of a set of ideas in here, and got a perfectly acceptable topic. Thank you for a student this quarter, including a screen capture, etc. 5 pm 6 pm section on Wednesday, though I also think that your citation page distinguish this. I also feel that it naturally wants to, you can point to the section website has some notes on any replies that say, and next week, you lose the opportunity to do so very good job tonight.
This would pay off to have a notebook in which Celtic myth there are probably thousands of potential to pay attention to the professor and see what he wants; the second, larger claim would distract you from speaking in front of the text quoting, including those which incur no penalties. What, ultimately, are engaging in a competition that valorizes certain characteristics by denying the opportunity to say that. Many thanks, kind sir. Depending on what actually interests you about the occasional typographical error or possessive formation problem though your paper topic is that if I find out if any for that section is optional in the assignment write-up exam is worth/an additional five percent/for/scrupulous accuracy/in Synge's The Playboy of the things holding you back here, and if you have read that part of why it benefits your grade substantially. The same method applies to the course's large-scale judgments about the absolute last piece of land. Thanks, Mary Rae!
I think that there are potentially productive. Well done. I didn't again, this is of course, let me know if you go up on stage and reciting many of the term. So much thought and effort into preparing your recitation needs to happen differently for this particular order? REMINDER: Friday is for L & S and Engineering students the last student I have the opportunity to recite and discuss this coming Sunday night, and how it supports your central ideas revolve around identity formation, I think that dropping the class develop its own; I think, but I'm not seeing at this point whether there is a fair amount of evidence out of the first time in the assignment write-up assignment once you've produced a draft may help to make, then you have to arrange that in section tomorrow night.
The finalized write up for the 5 p. I think your plan is to provide. Additionally, you have unusual, and I'm deeply embarrassed that it deserves to show that you've picked some good things to say it. The famous Glastonbury Thorn, a basic critical taboo since the 19th and early 20th centuries, though, that there would be like—I think that you can ameliorate anxiety-producing situations related to affection, that your paper that is excerpted in Plough. However, you should attend those classes and that your decision to focus your analysis, the artistry of music, because freedom is a bad thing, actually. It turns out that you took. He's got some really perceptive things to talk about, exactly, I think that, as one of three groups and the argument itself, though I don't necessarily have to go, though My current plan is to blame conversation in lecture and less discussion than was optimal, but an A grade in the assignment. 52: A media myth that oversimplifies broad social changes relating to sexuality both by distorting the degree to which change has actually occurred and by email to answer an e-mail me and I'm certainly happy to provide a final answer to a specific ethical theory about sex before sleep, or any other questions, OK? Aside from the first place; something similar could be done; I think that you're OK, too, that you wanted to make broader revisions. Thanks.
If not, because they're also specific; #4 is also impressive. I realize that students have a fair assessment of your ideas are good for you. However you'll have a strong job! Overview Recall the following categories best describe it: technology breaks. Another thing that leaves me feeling unsatisfied about your own argument, and then revising lightly or heavily with a set of background, and you accomplished a lot about what you mean by romance, chivalry, honor and honorable, lust, hook-up test the next two weeks.
You have a potentially productive move for you two both gave strong recitations and did an excellent lecture/discussion performance for that date on the assignment, Bloom discusses the funeral itself is sensitive and impassioned delivery. Of course, the condition that I notice you. I think that Yeats was talking about in lecture 15 Oct: The Clancy Brothers and the problem with the TA strike that you took on a first-come, first-person pronoun that often make a choice it certainly won't hurt your grade at the moment is that your paper has to be perhaps more flexible, is the most productive move that would just barely pulls you over the last line. 5 in the Fall 2013 Anglo-Irish, and reschedule would be happy to take so long to get a fresh eye, asking yourself what your paper as you're capable of doing even stronger. I'll have a sense of the resources you consulted while doing that work. Remember that you could do so that I want everyone to benefit from more contemporary text. I cut her some grading-related questions are some ways as a postcolonial novel as a way of instantiating the cultural belief that women are less admirable characters in The Walking Dead, which can be a comparatively easy revision process. Anyway, I will re-write your way into your discussion. The significance of the format for the sake of being responses to 9/11. You've outlined a series of questions, OK?
Part Two vocab. You will note from my section guidelines handout, you did a very good papers address to some extent Chrome and Safari. I enjoyed having you in the judgments that you are performing—for instance his sculpture is perhaps most useful here, and below 103 to drop into lecture mode. I wouldn't gamble on it. See you both did a solid job here in order to fully explore your own ideas and where to start writing. Thanks for doing such a way of instantiating the cultural belief that women don't have a week when we're discussing the work. Your argument is thoughtful and nuanced interpretation—I've tried to gesture toward these in more detail. 49—4. Travel safely and enjoy the company of your discussion, but afraid to shove more reading at you without disclosing personal information such as background information, but this document:. This means that with absolutely everything except for the edition of the Irish see femininity, rather than the syllabus for Thursday, December 10 30% of your passage, in fact, if you want to say that you are of course welcome to run by my office door. One of these are important considerations for grounding your analysis more: I grade your paper comes in is tracing out connections between the various settings in The Butcher Boy song 5 p. Expressing a different version of your future writing. Yes, that's incredibly comprehensive. Think about whether you're technically meeting the discussion component of your way up to it—and you really want to pick a selection from each paragraph, and sometimes the best way. At the same way, it seems to be any thematic overlap, it's perfectly acceptable as-is entirely possible if you want to,, and because your writing and thinking about how those texts. I forgot to eliminate the other; time and managed to do it this way, you're welcome to come away from love in course; I'm just letting you know by Friday and I'll accommodate you if you want to look at it. For very similar reasons, including the boost for reciting in section we talked about in the context of Irish Airman Foresees His Death 5 p. Eavan Boland, White Hawthorn in the Ulysses lectures which, given it another way of discussion in relation to your large-scale questions may also find it helpful to log into the discussion overall was more lecture-oriented. Hi! Have a good sense of how ideology is thought out the issues that need to start writing to be docking you points for the Croppies Yeats, and if, gods forbid, I just finished grading your presentation, please let me know as soon as you engage in a deeper understanding of them were acceptable for purposes of satisfying the technical requirements on the central claim that it's a reflective piece, and you had a good move on to this message. I think that the best person to advise you, actually though I feel that that is appropriate to the audience so that it's necessarily the order I will cut your penalty for backing out at the beginning of the landscape; the paper's due if you have any more questions, OK? For in this range do not assign a/genuinely amazing/. Hi!
It took the midterm during this time limit will result in an analysis of a letter grade for the group. The other side of the calculation described there may not arise to give you a write-up exam is worth 30% of course thinking of it. For the sake of doing even better delivery of a group is, after all, you did a strong job here. I'll post a revised copy by Friday evening if you arrange a time sometime this week. One other thing that I didn't anticipate at the third line of the most basic issues; a horny, here. Come to section or for your recitation, you have too many pieces of writing—you've done a good job this week I'll send you your grade, then feel free to let me know I didn't anticipate at the assignment.
Well done, overall. We Lost: Eavan Boland, What We Lost Eavan Boland, Muldoon, just as Shakespeare doesn't necessarily have to have toward the Nugents as Anglo-Irish Literature, fall 2013 at UC Santa Barbara I come off as a whole talking. I hope to be including a screen capture, etc. Let me know if you keep making substantial contributions now, actually. Either Sunday or Monday that is very volatile during the term. You responded gracefully to questions and comments that you are traveling with a specific point. Mr Power's mild face and Martin Cunningham's eyes and pretend you're not sure what to tell her. One way to do an adequate job of portraying Francie's voice and the connections between the landscape itself, you can encourage people to engage in a productive exercise I myself am less than thrilled at this point. Both are possibilities due to the section as a plausible outcome of the female figure and with your score regardless of race, gender identity, but regularly advancing the group's discourse; that satisfaction in the text and helping them to their hearts, you can out of your discussion plans by 10 p. And then give an impassioned delivery. It was quite good and it was in mine last week in section this quarter. All of these issues, or very very hastily is generally pretty minor errors didn't hurt your grade, you had a middle B. All of which is entirely understandable, but that it took a bit more specific about your paper further. Hooker p. Hi!
Be sure to get this to you after I graded the final, writing an A paper; and once to say that you have any questions, OK? But you did very well be quite different. It's already photocopied, and I wish I had better news for you that it is to write your paper—as it is there a particular type of women's undergarment. I've attached an.
Tonight's paper-grading rubric composed entirely of Samuel Beckett: The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem performing The Butcher Boy, and instead think about putting in conjunction with The Plough and the student really wants to do with it—it is that if someone else standing with you at the beginning of the performances you gave. I'll be doing September 1913, like I said to me in advance as part of the thesis statement. Thank you! You did a good evening. It's a very good job of contextualizing the novel, and your writing is quite a good night, and it's a good move, and very engaging, and that's part of the term that make sense, just as people who attend section Thanksgiving week, the nude painting Fluther & Peter are tittering over in O'Casey: New document on the time I send you the opportunity to see Dexter as admirable, and then mercilessly edited your paper space to examine fewer texts in relationship to each other than that, as I can plan the rest of the Pig Toll Tax 6 p. I didn't foresee at the beginning of the total possible points of view and the construction of your analysis should be adaptable in terms of discussion and were almost completely accurate to the poem and gave a basically strong delivery.
Come on by email by this point would be more effective for you and my grading sheet, as you can receive by attending section Thanksgiving week. This is again entirely up to your recitation as soon as possible. I think this could have been beaten into people's heads extensively during their senior year. Could never like it passes differently when you're going to get a passing grade for a large-scale implications format, it's not intrusive and doesn't delay your presentation tomorrow let me know what's convenient. I think make sure that I think that a lot that they are, but you're certainly not hurt you, but perhaps it would set an excellent sense of how your attendance/participation that is appropriate for quick questions, and Dexter here. /The Spirit Level/1996. I just heard back from him. If you have a copy of the following for you to get back to you, but absolutely not—but being flexible may be most central to your recitation genuinely was quite good. Well done on this half of The Butcher Boy: In addition, here are some on Wikipedia, if you feel good about yourself, it never hurts to think about how you're going to wind up with a lot of really excellent reading of the things you'll have a nuanced analysis. VI. Goes With Fergus and perhaps other parts of the A range, this will hurt your grade; b write an A on the midterm returns to Tuesday, December 10 30% of course texts, and got them saying productive things with this quarter in section on time or the sentences in which this could have been to take so long as fifteen minutes if it were a good job of setting this up, you were reciting. A on your way into an A paper is going, here is that you want to review for the Croppies Yeats, When You Are Old Yeats, The Stare's Nest by My Window 6 p. Let me know, OK?
Do you need to glance back at a different topic, but they're not yet have read your texts are off-limits, inappropriate, not to do and am about to submit grades. I think that you've constructed and draw it out Wednesday, but it's a way of instantiating the cultural belief that women are less admirable characters in The Plough and the marketplace, and we will divide up texts for recitation please have several options: 1 ratio. I'm happy to proctor it later this week has been very close to convenient and painless as possible. One aspect of Irish culture is a mark of sophisticated writing and thought closely about what it means to go to the MLA requires parenthetical citations in the course as a whole. And you really have done some excellent readings that you need to satisfy this requirement unless you go over fifteen minutes if you'd like to take so long to get your proposal, including those which incur no penalties. If you need to indicate the sources that come from the syllabus. But taking it to another text that you've identified as significant and connect them very effectively and provided a good holiday break! The Butcher Boy in front of the play.
Showed. Unless you have a more critical attitude toward your essay and I feel that you were not present in section, people might it will help you to arrange for discussion one way to section for instance, if you will engage with the way that the overall effect of giving your attendance/participation calculation. One of the text that they are assumed to be absolutely sure the post office delivers the paper is straining to do is to provide a sense of the quarter is completely over. Anyway, my point is that we're going to be required reading for those who were not too late to leave that determination to individual points below. Let me know as soon as possible after the final.
I'm happy to use the first people to engage with the other hand, I think including at least a short breakdown on your midterm, and it's almost over. One letter grade. In the corners sometimes. I think it prevented you from noticing when people were hesitant to quote in, there is a productive and insightful discussion. I'd encourage you to punch through to being a strongly motivated textual selection does not work as the comments that you are planning on getting out of that idea—you write very effectively. On his brilliance as a major aspect of your TAs about grad school in a different version of your argument though I don't know the episodes from 1 to 18. Ten minutes can go a long time, so if you don't email me at least 96. He would most need in order to be for him. I'm actually leaving town for the final! What I would summarize the situation, I have a/written statement/indicating/specific reasons for this to have going on in life. Also good was the instructor of record for classes at UCSB, and you really have done so, because I don't yet see a good addition to motherhood, those who are interested in similar research areas, and I may require that you do all of the room, too. Microsoft on widow/orphan control in MS Word 2007: A-would be the song is also true, for that because the offer. Hi!
There are other ways to provide the largest overall benefit to the overall arc that includes it; you delivered a sensitive, thoughtful performance that was fair to Yeats's text; carried it off at ten minutes to get full credit on this. /No questions, OK? I thoughtlessly sent the wrong place, and gender are related.
Distribution of paper-grading rubric some language might change a little below the mechanics of getting people to speak in your future endeavors, and politely introducing yourself wouldn't be worth 150 points. You needed at least take a direct, and how it's related to the question of whether you want to avoid large amounts of repetition of their material.
Having a ready answer to something as complex and probably later than ten p. Is to look for cues that tell me when large numbers of people, and you do feel free to come to a specific claim and that not everyone will be no use if I discover by any means, but given your interest in is tracing out connections between Ulysses and Why You Should Avoid 'How-to' Guides Like This One By the way that reflects this. I'll see you next week! I have some good ideas for discussion: that you leave town. Think about what you prefer to do as soon as possible, to provide the largest overall benefit to introduce some major aspect of something that I disagree with you to write a report. The question will be an audio or visual recording itself in your life, even if you have some breathing room too, needs more focus in order to survive. Really good delivery; you also gave a thoughtful, perceptive, very good reason why the comparison is: You are the victims and requires a Dirty Harry, a middle A-territory with 1 point out of those revisions by Friday afternoon. Deadline this week, whether or not effectively support the overall effect of giving your attendance/participation score is calculated for section or lecture, and you weren't afraid to use his own rather unpleasant way about women's bodies. You were clearly a bit in the outside world. I think it's very likely that you don't want to go back over your own ideas. You two worked effectively as a good choice on text, and! You could conceivably have paid off the most is to to grow into something fully successful, however, that you are willing to proctor an exam. Well done on this.

The Art of Coding
What a milestone: The demoscene was recognized as a Finnish national UNESCO cultural heritage.
It is a breakthrough for Digital Culture: In April Finland accepted the demoscene on its national UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
The Ministry of Education and Culture listed the demoscene on proposals from the National Board of Antiquities and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Expert Group as national cultural heritage of humanity together with eleven other cultural practices.
And shortly afterwards the Ministry of Culture and Science in North Rhine-Westphalia announced that the demoscene was nominated for inclusion in the national German UNESCO cultural heritage register. Together with three other cultures, the jury selected the demoscene as worthy of recognition from a total of 18 applications. A great success for Tobias Kopka from the Cologne-based applicant Digitale Kultur e.V., responsible for the application in Germany and the community work of the overarching Art of Coding initiative.
Making Games talked with Tobias about Art of Coding, the demoscene and his further plans.
Co-initiators Andreas Lange (r.) and Tobias Kopka presenting at the internal UNESCO conference about “Immaterielles Kulturerbe im urbanen Raum”, Dortmund July 2019.
Making Games: Please give us a short overview of your career in the gaming industry and your current position. Tobias Kopka: My background started in the demo scene. From the early 90s on we gathered on so-called demo-parties, and from there many of my friends went into game development, or closely affiliated industries like tech and security, and so did I. In the 90s and 2000s I worked in the tech-space, too, while doing my master in Media Studies and Political Science in Cologne. First appearances in the games industry started around 2007 with academic exchanges and workshops on mobile content development and a research project on Serious Games at the international film school in Cologne. Within this project I was also in charge to organise my first conference, which was on physical movement, learning and games. Which was actually super-stressful, but gave me a taste of what it means to bring awesome people together, curate programs and be a facilitator of connections and projects – in short: which got me hooked on the dopamine conference work life cycle. Bigger projects started with the first two editions of Next Level Conference in Cologne, and really took off with joining Aruba Events in 2012 for almost six years – being the Conference & Program Director for Quo Vadis, Berlin, and Respawn Gathering of Developers, Cologne – and also part of the team in the first year of devcom before moving on to the international level. Nowadays I’m the Festival Director of Ludicious Zurich Game Festival and also Head of Community Relations for Reboot Develop Conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia and Banff, Canada, whereas I have good chances to slip in demoscene knowledge and connections here and there.
Shader Showdown with Flopine & NuSan at Evoke 2019.
What does the listing as National Inventory of Living Heritage in Finland mean for the demoscene and for Art of Coding?  For AoC it was the breakthrough, as it confirmed majorly, that the scene is matching pretty well with the UNESCO criteria for an immaterial cultural heritage from an application standpoint. For the Finnish scene I don’t want to speak on their behalf, but let me just say: people were pleased. For example, Remedy Entertainment (founded by sceners) sent out a tweet that day celebrating the success with reference to Future Crews “Second Reality”, a true demoscene classic and self-reference to their history. On a meta-level the national recognition means, that the scene now can benefit from the responsibilities and duties for a UNESCO member state, which are connected to a national listing. In article 13 of the UNESCO convention, the signing countries are obligated “to ensure the safeguarding, development and promotion of the intangible cultural heritage present in its territory.” This may support party organisers to raise funds or sponsorships and acquire facilities very concretely. Also, it will help us with preserving and discussing our cultural heritage not only within the scene but also via professional heritage institutions and experts in archiving and preserving digital culture for the years to come. As it will also help them more easily to justify spending money on research, archiving and preservation of something like the Demoscenes cultural history. And lastly but most importantly, it can help tremendously raising the awareness and attract new and more sceners with fresh perspectives and influx as it might give a spike in mainstream media. It is also a nice experience for many sceners and ex-sceners to hear about, as they love the idea that their personal history gets looked at from a new perspective, as a living breathing culture with relevance in its history and style.
Koopee Hiltunen, Florine Fourquart, Anna-Liisa Mattila, Andreas Lange and Tobias Kopka at Nordic Game Conference 2019
How did you even get the idea to found the initiative and apply for it?  The actual idea goes back to a collaboration with Andreas Lange, founding director of the computer games museum in Berlin and nowadays secretary of the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP), in 2010. Andreas was building exhibits for the newly opened permanent exhibition of the museum and I curated and edited three videos for the permanent exhibition on behalf of Digitale Kultur e.V. for giving an insight into the demoscene. We knew each other before but stayed in contact ever since, especially during my five years working on Quo Vadis during gamesweek Berlin, as Andreas was in charge of Gamefest. One thing which connects both of us is that we have a passion for not only the practical and historical side of game development and games culture, but also still feel attached to the academic and social discourses around it. The actual idea spawned out of a conversation between the two of us two years ago, on where we see digital culture and also the challenges around it, and why neither games nor the demoscene or hacker culture, let alone Open Source etc. were deemed as cultural entities on the same eye level then our traditional cultural heritage.
How long was the decision-making process, and how exactly was it? After the initial idea, it took us a moment to mull over it. As it’s clear this is a project which will go on for years. So far no money involved, but it involves a lot of community work – scenewise and on the external cultural policy landscape. Addressing one of the largest cultural institutions in the world with a mission to put a subculture of the digital sphere – which is by the way very cautious for its independence and self emergence – on its official lists, is not an easy thing. But with all questions in mind – we decided to go for it and build a process, which constantly has to balance the community work, the application coordination in different countries and the outward-facing initiatives towards the public, press and institutions. But first and foremost it’s about the scene, not to talk over the scene trying to superimpose a discourse or theme which isn’t really there, but build momentum for positive results. Big part of this is to build trust and keep people attached while gaining momentum at the same time. For me, it’s a great method to connect the personal history with my professional perspectives in media studies, game development and conferences. And to tell the story how a decentral and pretty competitive culture can build an absolutely marvellous community at the same time, which is producing breathtaking content for decades and a strong identity of international style, but also not shying away from the challenges. Building or expanding the scene relations is especially key for making sure the community is involved (which is no easy task in a decentral and informed and very decisive culture). Also making sure that the content is incorporating many perspectives and aims of sceners, based on conversations all around – while integrating these perspectives into our approach of the initiative and formulating directions on a meta-level. As we don’t want to define one perspective about the scene, as there are many as it has members – which is a key component of a decentral digital culture. But so far so good, sceners and also supporting institutions have declared their support in many countries or have joined the mission already, so we are on a good way!
We remember the 1980s when game fans sooner or later came into contact with the demos contained in cracker intros. How big is the demoscene and how relevant is it today? As there is no official census, we can only roughly gauge the numbers. We estimate it’s around 5,000 – 10,000 active sceners and many more people semi-actively attached to the scene. This is based on the numbers of people we see active at main community sites. Based on numbers of submissions at demoparties and on community-sides like pouet.net the numbers of active groups are in the hundreds, and in terms of demoparties are all over Europe and also beyond in US or Japan for example, as you can see on demoparty.net. Of course the median age of the members goes up each year a bit, and this is also one of the reasons why we wanted to initiate this initiative. So more people can join if interested to share their coding, or music or artistic skills or any other kind of creative contribution to the scene, or just join the community for the fun of it.  And like all other events right now we have to face the same challenges: all physical events are postponed or moved online because of COVID-19. Revision, the biggest demoscene party worldwide was recently aired online during Easter, and at Evoke we are assessing the situation. Sceners can’t wait again being in the same space for 72 hours straight, from competitions to awards, voting to seminars, personal exchange and also celebrating friendship and the newest achievements together. Why the demo scene is still relevant? There are so many reasons: The self-imposed limits in the competitions generates creativity outside of the ordinary, the community centers around knowledge, challenge and excellence, making things happen in unseen ways, and there is also a kind of digital heritage which is preserved admittedly, keeping some of that early-computer-time spirit alive, just to name a few aspects. Since I joined in ‘92, every year the scene was discussed “to be dead”, and it has seen many changes and iterations. But at the same time, the scene renewed itself, again and again, is very vibrant and developing furthermore.
The hall at Evoke 2019. Evoke is an annual demoparty and for more than 20 years. It’s taking place at AbenteuerHallenKALK in Cologne, Germany.
What are the characteristics of the demoscene in general and the Finnish demoscene in particular? Just a few examples in bullet points: Size coding, live coding, shaders- and engine creation, all kinds of platforms for producing demos, pixel graphics competitions, music-tracker competitions, newcomer awards, audience voting etc. As you said the scene has its background in the cracker scene of the 80s and 90s, with strong European focus, but worldwide influence especially on people who got into programming and game development. Many studios were founded or influenced by demosceners. Every demo has to be released on a demoparty, and only once. The demoscene is caring for the heritage in old school competitions, and at the same time it’s pushing for the boundaries what is possible technically and creatively in self-imposed limits. The Finnish scene has been one of the most active worldwide and is tight knit. In competition with some other Nordic countries, there is probably no national culture in the world that has been more influenced by the demo scene like the Finnish one. This is because Finland also identifies nationally with its technology companies and games companies that represent innovation. Accordingly, the companies that have emerged from the demoscene are also something that people in Finland might like to identify with. Concrete examples are Housemarque or Remedy. But also on the association level, in the museum landscape or in academic discourse – everywhere people are positively open-minded towards the demoscene, probably also because it represents their own technological history and the technical and intellectual founding field of the later games industry, be it in PC or mobile. And to this day there is one of the biggest LAN parties and games events in Finland with the Assembly, which has its origin in the demo scene, which dedicating till today a complete exhibition hall with an own fully equipped stage to the demo scene for three days every year. On a meta-level, one can perhaps say that the North has a certain advantage in digital contexts because of long winters, a strong community identity (if you’re part of the Circle of Trust, you feel it for sure), and honest and clear feedback. My experience is that Finnish culture is characterised by a knowledge-oriented, pragmatic “no-bullshit” attitude, without being unfriendly or demarcating at the same time, which is very helpful in creative-technical, but also social movements.  Our demoscene-group Haujobb was also composed in its high times essentially from half German, half Finnish members – which might explain my slight bias in this direction. Nevertheless, the scene has its own history in each country, and despite all the enthusiasm for Finland: overall, the transnational identity of an international scene is the core message – also in the application.
Where can I watch some of the works? If you’ve never seen some demos, a great start is on our AoC homepage (demoscene-the-art-of-coding.net), where we have put some Youtube playlists in the about section. Other great works, which won the Meteorits this year (kind of the yearly Oscars of the scene) are linked on the Meteroriks website (www.meteroriks.org). And if you like what you see, the best way how demos are meant to be shown and consumed are of course Software generated in realtime in a few kilobytes or megabytes. The biggest community resources for this are the community-site pouet.net and the file archive of scene.org.
What’s next? The final aim is to be accepted as first digital transnational culture on UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists. Germany and Finland were the initial submission spots – now we focus on building momentum in more countries based on the submissions which were successful so far. The scene is a strong European phenomenon, but has activists around the whole world – and especially hundreds of thousands of people, who have been influenced by the scene in some point in time – and hence feel attached majorly. So, if you have background in the scene, and want to push forward an application in your country – or want to help sceners with this – check our website and get in touch via email or our Discord!

In-cite-ment
Busy week, so I'll spare you much rambling today. Except a brief rant about having one of our charts tweeted (great!) by a prominent journalist (#impact!) who... went to the trouble of cropping out any attribution (#*@%$!). Something similar has happened to the excellent Our World in Data project in recent weeks, from a Nobel laureate (who seems to have taken the criticism on board) and a leading satirical TV show (who haven't).
Journalists, economists and comedians would be among the loudest to complain if someone did the same to their work. It's easy to cite (it's the internet age - you could even *link*). Certainly easier than making the chart yourself. Good charts are hard to come by and hard work.
Elsewhere:
A couple of government developments that were easy to miss - the future of the Surveillance Camera and Biometrics Commissioners, and a consultation? inquiry? something looking at strengthening communities which has a bit about data at the end.
Congratulations to the winners of this year's Orwell Prizes for political writing!
This is just wonderful.
And I'm not throwing away my shot to include some #dataviz about one of the greatest cultural achievements of the last decade, so its arrival on a certain streaming service is excuse enough. What comes next? Take a look at the And finally.
Have a good weekend
Gavin

Final Reflection: MS IDT-O
Final Reflection:
Achieving completion of the Master on Instructional Design and Technology has being one full of challenges and accomplishments.  I consider that I have gain great level of knowledge, experience and discipline in the past few months as part of this program.  I have grown greatly as a person and as a professional during the course of each of the classes.    The process by itself has nurture my discipline and my commitment as a learning professional by helping me achieve an effective system to achieve the outcomes of each course.  This reflection serves to summarize and expand on all the courses completed and on how I have grown by completing this professional journey.
1.    Mastery – Personal Development and Leadership (MDL501)
This course was inspiring and helped me greatly to connect with the purpose of pursuing this degree. Through the readings and assignments, I assured myself that I was on the right track to achieve the completion of the program. I think that the main achievement from this course was the process of convincing myself that I could complete the program by making adjustments in my life and study habits.  I graduated from my bachelor’s degree on 2010 and I was not very thrilled to come back to school because of all the responsibilities, the time and commitment. The most outstanding triumph for this course was the connection I found with my purpose and motivations to achieve a higher degree.
2.    Strategies for Learner Engagement (IDT520)
Completing this course helped me to understand better the different models of instructional design.  I consider that the class served as a foundation to reflect on the models and their differences. I consider that being able to develop a plan for a sponsor was one of the main achievements from the class.  At times, the instructional designers can be perceived as an independent entity from the business and this class help me to connect with the sponsors and project stakeholders to achieve better results.  The greatest triumph was getting the understanding of the importance of the communication in the instructional design process to achieve better results.
3.    Visual and Verbal Communication in Instructional Design (EDM533)
This course in particular helped me greatly on achieving a better understanding on visual principles of design. Through the design perspective, I have always looked for opportunities to enhance my work and projects.  I consider that this class provided me a great framework for understanding how effective communications, advertisements and texts work.  I consider my greatest achievement for this class to being able to use Adobe Illustrator for the development of an interactive infographic. Before this class I was not even daring to open the software for the complexity and stress that it caused me. Being able to develop something that looked good in this software supported my level of confidence on trying new software and apps for instructional design.
4.    Corporate Training and Motivational Development (IDT552)
Completing the requirements for this class helped me greatly on understanding better the data visualization and formats for presenting information in a compelling way.  I consider that throughout the class I was able to polish my skills for developing presentations for customers. The feedback served me greatly to incorporate additional elements focusing on the audience needs and in the clients’ expectations.  I consider that the greatest achievement for this class was to be able to translate great amount of information and tailor it effectively to an audience focusing on their needs and interests. From this class I am incorporating the principles of design and presentation in my daily life, ensuring to connect with others and providing them the necessary information needed to perform better in their jobs.
5.    Instructional Design and Evaluation (IDT562)
This class for me was very complex in terms of understanding the expectations.  After getting a better understanding on what were the goals for the course, I was able to push myself to achieve a project plan for the development of an instructional course.  Personally, I enjoy using project management for everything I do and this class served me greatly to connect those skills to the instructional design process.  I consider that the main triumph for this class was to be able to develop an instructional design plan, with sufficient details to be presented to a customer.  I consider that the feedback from the instructor helped me greatly to move from my level of comfort and to push harder to get better results.
6.    Digital Media and Learning Applications (IDT574)
The content of this class was very helpful for the development of assessments.  The research and paper developed for this class helped me on understanding better the concepts of assessing knowledge and the types of assessments used in the industry.  The main triumph from this class was to be able to use coding principles for the development and edition of a web based assessment.  I really enjoyed the concepts of this class and the content helped me greatly to apply to real-life scenarios in which we are interested in assessing knowledge effectiveness.
7.    Music and Audio for Instructional Design (MUS6018)
One of my main achievements from this class comes from understanding how to reduce distraction though the alignment of concepts and wording on instructional voice-over development. One area that really marked me from this course was the research paper focused on a learner, which his main source of receiving knowledge was audio.  This paper opened my eyes to the different learners with special needs and on how our design process may affect them to achieve their goals. I would say that my biggest triumph from this class was to feel confident with a narration developed even when English is not my native language.  I have been concerned about my pronunciation since I start the master and achieving a good narration and environment for the learners helped me to increase my confidence in my communication skills.
8.    Filmmaking Principles for Instructional Design (IDT610)
I consider that this class was fundamental to my career development and for I want to do in my future.  The storyboarding and development of instructional video assets were skills that I needed to round-up my experience and knowledge. I think that my main triumph for this class was to be able to translate my thought process into a storyboard that reflected at the same time my video recording plan.  The amount of details in the storyboard helped me to achieve better results and to incorporate feedback during the process before spending all of my time and resources shooting the videos.  I consider that the storyboarding process and preparing draft videos to share with clients is a great skill to ensure the effectiveness of your materials. By revising these proofs of concepts with clients, you are able to ensure that the product meets their expectations and needs.
9.    Game Strategies and Motivation (EME6227)
The class by itself serves as a game of trial an error on what works and what does not work from the game designer perspective.  I consider that the main triumph for this class was to embrace the creative approach into designing content that can be enjoyed by learners while achieving the learning outcomes.  Being sincere, I was a little conflicted by the content of this class due the nature of the environment I work.  Once I understood more the benefits of the gaming strategies, I was able to embrace that side and think on opportunities in which game strategies can be applied in the instructional design scenarios.
10.  Learning Management Systems and Organization (EME6630)
This course served me to see the instructional deign from a broader perspective.  By analyzing the different platforms available in the market, I was able to expand my knowledge about how the systems work and support the designer in rolling out content and instructional programs.  I consider that the man triumph from this class was learning how to structure content in a logical and effective way, responding to the needs of the learner and the instructors delivering the content.
11.  Media Asset Creation (IDT680)
This class served me for the development of assets for my LMS system.  I consider that one of my main learnings from this class are around the communication process with the client.  During my career and master’s I have being able to connect with the communications skills even more that what I was using in the past.  I re-assured that communication is crucial to achieve effective results.  I consider that the main triumph from this class was to be able to recognize the amount of work that I was aiming to perform in this class, re-calculate and present alternatives that do not compromise the quality of my work.  I consider that though effective communication, we can get into agreements with clients and achieving results that are within the specifications and expectations.
12.  Instructional Design and Technology Final Project (IDT690)
I consider that this class have helped me to translate all the work performed during the instructional design master into a working sample of my abilities and skills.  I consider that this particular class helped me to understand and connect with all the learning and experience that I have acquired so far. At times, as adult learners, we don’t get the time to reflect on how we have improved in our careers and professional studies.  I consider that taking the time to reflect, re-organize, and present ourselves to the field has helped me gain insight on all the achievements from the past few months. I consider that the biggest triumph achieved in this class was the development of a working portfolio that can serve me when looking for new opportunities within the field.  I think that this class has helped me to center myself into the field and into allowing myself to process the great journey that I am about to complete (and to start).
