Fanbinding: Three Oneshots with Chain stitch and Hot Foil

When I first tried fanbinding, I messed up the cases and had to redo them. That was a learning experience. XD But I didn't throw the botched cases away because I figured I might be able to use them for something one day, even if it was just to try out some stuff.

And I found a use for them! I'd wanted to try out a chain stitch tutorial I'd seen on SeaLemon's youtube channel for a thin book with just one signature and a nice stitch pattern on the spine. And when I got a set of hot foil pens, I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to not just test that chain stitch but to also try for some hot foil titles!

Lots of pictures under the cut!

I struggled some with the sewing because I'd decided in my infinite wisdom that I wanted to use two threads instead of just one because I thought it look nicer. And it does look nice! But oh boy, do two threads cause some problems, like unexpected knots, wrapping around each other all the time etc. Still, I'm pleased with how it turned out!

I really enjoyed keeping up the New York theme for this Fire Island fic (highly recommended, awesome sequel to the movie!). Also, of course there needed to be rainbow colours! XD

I forgot to use initials for the beginning of the text in all three books, because I did the typesetting quite quickly and simply didn't remember to do something about it as I'd been fiddling around with the graphics for a while. XD Ah well, next time.

For etymologyplayground's fic, the hot foil doesn't stand out as clearly when the light doesn't hit it right. I don't know whether this is because of the ligh-tcoloured linen or because the foil wasn't exactly the best quality. Still, when the light hits it just right, it looks really cool!

The insides of the case don't always match perfectly to the rest of the colour design, but that's because I chose some papers that were either leftovers from other projects or ones from the thick design paper blocks I've got. It's serviceable.

I like how the design turned out otherwise here, with the illustration that I actually repeated at the end of the book, though I'm too lazy to take another picture. XD

I'm very pleased with the design of this one! The gold foil fits the cover so well (and I mean, I love that paper so much, anyway).

I like how Changyang's art works for the story that starts with WangXian travelling, and how the lotus picture illustrates the ending set in Yunmeng. I used a photography and send it through a hundred filters in PS. XD

Overall, I'm very pleased with how these books turned out, improvised though they were. I could try some new things and am so happy about the foil pens! So many more possibilities for making cover designs! I do have a few ideas already, but we'll see.

Good catch with the link between Syd and the cigarettes & red wine! This was on my list of metas to write because I was wondering what was significant about that table too.

You might be right about them going over the menu together but in 3x02 he started telling her all the changes he made on the menu, the scallop was perfect they didn't need the other 6 fishes, the rib eye was too big, instead of bucatini he changed it to a large raviolo etc. It seemed like the first time she was hearing all of that even though she quickly got into his rhythm and was finishing his sentences.

Also when Nat showed Syd Carmy's lists, it seemed like Syd realized then that he'd made all the decisions without her already and she looked pissed. Right after he asked her to sign the document to be his partner too.

The sea bass and potato chips thing (another post on my list to write)...Daniel Boulud is known for making dishes (or one specific dish I think) with sea bass and potato chips. So when Carmy mentioned it and Syd immediately knew the famous dish and chef he was paying homage to

(after googling what "Boulud nod" meant) I just assumed it was to show how much they're still on the same page when it comes to food even if they're not on the same page when it comes to anything else at the moment & that Carmy's inspired by Syd's work/had her on his mind while redoing everything. (I doubt he would've thought of adding potato chips if Syd didn't do it in 2x09. I kinda think it was his way of letting her know he was thinking about her while redoing the menu even if he didn't give her a say. Also it's the last good memory he has before everything went to hell in 2x10.)

As well as a nod to Daniel Boulud who was in 3x01

But I didn't notice there was no sea bass dish on the menu in 3x02 so maybe there's more to it than that

Smoking is banned in all enclosed public spaces in my country and I've heard that's the case in a lot of places in the US too? I could be wrong but I just assumed smoking wasn't allowed in the restaurant while it's open for business (I don't think any customers smoked in there in 2x10 or in S3?) so I thought it had to be a private dinner too.

What I noticed was the napkin

This image was so dark I had to brighten it so you can see the colours but that's all I did to it... They're red and blue lines on the napkin

Kinda similar to these lines:

But in 2x08 when Richie was setting those same tables practicing for friends and family, these were the napkins:

They're all blue. No red.

They're still all blue in 2x10 and there are no ashtrays on these tables.

I don't think we're supposed to believe they ordered all new napkins between 2x10 and 3x01 and I really don't think it's a continuation error either. But I don't really know why a close up of a different version was shown in 3x01 yet.

My initial thoughts are the change is symbolic. Carmy had no intention of breaking up with Claire in 2x10 so he was surrounded by the blue lines. They were over by 3x01 and he'd already decided to immerse himself in doing right by Sydney (in his own messed up way), hence being surrounded by the red lines.

What I do know is red and blue (and technically white) lines have been prominent in a few Sydcarmy moments since S1. Here they are in 2 different forms in this scene in 1x07

Look at the shirt in the back, misaligned red and blue lines and the sleeve pattern of the lines is similar to the napkins.

And here behind Richie's head

They're not so much misaligned here, more fractured and separated.

This was a pretty significant scene in their story too imo and kinda relates to where we are in the show in S3. Carmy refusing to just pick a side between Syd & Richie, trying to keep both of them happy when they clearly didn't like each other (at the time), Syd tries to tell Carmy they're not on the same page, he ignores her concerns...I really need to write that meta about my theory on S1 now!

In 2x01 or 2x02 Richie had a little monologue talking about these lines that just won't line up, whatever they try to do they just won't line up. I haven't rewatched it in awhile but I know I saw those same red, blue & white lines from the vending machine in that scene. Carmy & Sydney just won't line up, they've both been trying but no matter what each of them try they can't communicate properly or get on the same page.

All of this to say, I think something about that table in 3x01 does symbolize Sydcarmy but idk why, that's why I haven't written the meta yet, but I think it all connects somehow.

Also the napkin in 3x01 caught my attention because when the episode list for S3 was released, someone (I can't remember who) mentioned Sydcarmy were talking about napkins in that 2x05 scene above. Syd wanted to talk about napkins but Carmy was rushing out to meet Claire and said something like "we'll definitely talk about napkins later" but they never did. Which I still think is significant somehow.

Carmy is focused on cleaning one table Season 3

When? Where? What? Who?

We see this same table with claire sitting there. Remember her and Kelly. Take note of what they're drinking. No cigarettes, no red wine.

Fast forward to the post-friends-and-family night on May 27th. Carmy walks in, and the table catches his eye - cigarettes and red wine. Carmy spends an incredible amount of time cleaning and adjusting this table by himself.

When did this scene where two people sat drinking wine and smoking cigarettes happen?

I think it took place post friends and family.

Whatever went down may 27th(ziggy)) left two people talking for some time and made carmy want to readjust his way of getting a star.

Maybe he met with Claire? No, she made it clear he hasn't attempted to reach out since friends and family.

But we get insight that she smokes. Like donna. Like richie..

Like Sydney smokes and drinks red wine at the end of season 3.

Could Sydney and Carmy be hanging out together, going over the menu? Something happened that night, which had him hanging out at the restaurant. He went back home, then returned to clean - almost like a redo.

In episode 3x02, Syd and Carmy discuss menu changes. Carmy mentions adding potato chips to an existing seabass dish, but as mentioned in the episode, there is no seabass dish on the menu that needed changing. It is possible that they discussed the menu on 5/27, and Sydney mentioned seabass, which led Carmy to reconsider his changes.

The shipper in me wonders if, after this night of drinking and smoking, she went over to his house and slept over, which could explain the scrunchie being there.
