What I've learned in 2023 (part II)
x. 2023 shattered my glass on my highly sitcom/books/pop culture tinted glasses through which I have been seeing life. Of course I am the main character of my life and of course I am both a writer and a romantic. But it's dangerous to think of my life as a story and to subconsciously do things for the plot. Okay I don't even think that's what I have been doing. I think the main issue is that I have the cognitive distortion of "should". Shout out to my therapist for making me finally see it. I'm constantly like but I should do this, I should think this way, I should feel this way, it should have been that way. She asked me, 'But should according to who or what? Which is this invisible rulebook of yours? And honestly I didn't have an answer then. It took me months to finally see it. My 'should' rule book has been one from pop culture. I like the idea of things being a certain way, playing out a certain way that's poetic, profound, meaningful, or rounded but that's the thing, right? Real life is not like that. It also does not have this well-written script that people I am interacting with will follow. And I cannot be so disheartened or disappointed with that.
xi. This year has also been the year where I can finally see that asking someone for something that they are either not capable of giving or willing to give and have clearly communicated that to you is a form of self-harm. If you keep repeatedly asking them for that or expecting/hoping that one day they will, it's a sure shot way of making yourself go crazy and feeling so very bitter, resentful, and frustrated. You have to let people be who they are and decide if you want to have something to do with them.
xii. Your feelings will not kill you. Sit with them or simply self-soothe. Don't constantly reach out to an external force for temporary relief (i.e., other people, esp the ones you want to move on from). So if your self soothing means lying on the cool marble floor like a starfish, do it. If that means watching a Hindi soap with your mom, do it. If that means making a list of things distressing you, make it. If it means crying, cry. If it taking a shower + crying + listening to sad music, do it. I want you to start relying a little more on yourself + regulating your emotions instead of feeling like you will absolutely die if you sit with yourself.
xiii. Had a full blown panic attack when I realized this one morning after an exhausting night with a situationship (tw: sexual abuse). Most of my relationships with men as an adult were me finding myself in equations where I feel dirty, where I feel mistreated, unloved, used, and unloved. Subconsciously repeating patterns because it's one of my biggest traumas/wounds. Because this is how "intimacy" was introduced to me at 15 when I was abused. That's what I keep recognizing as love? Unlearn. Unlearn. Unlearn.
xiv. If someone is pointing out something about your personality or you and labeling it as a problem that's a problem especially when it has nothing to do with them. Unless you label it as a problem they shouldn't be doing that. That's presumptuous and somebody who is harshly judging you. It's not a safe space.
xv. Human behaviour is fickle. That's why boundaries exist. So they can guide your present actions and make sure they are aligned with your personality/values/etc. It's very easy to be "in the moment" and do something that makes no sense given the bigger picture. That's why boundaries exist, so that you don't find yourself in such moments. iykyk.
xvi. You do not need to share everything that's happening in your life, that's going on in your mind, etc., with absolutely anybody. And that's not any form of betrayal or secrecy. It's really just realizing that no one needs to constantly be updated on everything in your life. It's exhausting, it's unnecessary, and it breaks your sense of clarity and confidence with regards to your intuition and perspective on most things. Cutting out the noise cannot begin if you keep feeding into it.
xvii. Here's my permission slip to say no and not back it up with a reason. You are a people pleaser. You want everyone to be satisfied and try to pacify them as much as you can. You make it about you so they don't feel bad. You justify your nos so much. But this must stop. When you want to go pee and you ask someone where the restroom is, do you feel the need to tell them why you are asking or why you have to pee? No, right? Just like that with a lot of things in life, you don't need to dish out explanations and elaborate on what you say. Especially when it comes to saying a no. Especially when it comes to saying a no to men. When you don't want to sleep with someone, be their girlfriend, go on a date with them, etc., you can just say no. The ones who don't respect that or don't get it - ghost them.
xviii. I know, I know you hate the concept of ghosting. But sometimes that's the only way. Be straight, communicate, yes. But then when the person isn't even listening to what you're saying, is completely disregarding you, then baby, just fucking ghost the fuck out of them. Them ignoring your no and constantly calling you, texting you, etc., is harassment. You don't need to put up with that. Don't put up with that.
xix. You've arrived at the problem areas for most things but not the solutions. This year you figured out most of the questions that need answering. But you are yet to begin figuring out their answers. That may not be as simple or as final as you'd like. Maybe the answers will come in layers too, from different sources, in varied ways. Focus. Trust your intuition. Don't let feelings dictate your decisions. Only feel your feelings. Let the decision making happen based on your lessons, values, and objective thought processes. You've done it before. You'll do it again. It's you, my love. And what can you not do once you've set your mind to do it?

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha (2024): Ajay Devgn’s Biggest Disaster!
You need Courage to Love. If you are a guy who has ever fallen in love, then your love story can never be complete if you don’t possess that courage. “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha” translated as “Where Was The Courage In Others” is writer and director Neeraj Pandey’s cult romantic drama that was released in theaters on August 2, 2024. Starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu as the romantic duo alongside Shantanu Maheshwari and Saiee Manjrekar as their younger versions, the film also stars Jimmy Sheirgill. Presenting Shantanu Maheshwari and Saiee Manjrekar as young Krishna and Vasudha in “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha” https://youtu.be/ATSDZnCy5h4?si=_jLFUzyqXIjFv9fr After 23 years when Krishna is released from life imprisonment, will he be able to meet the love of his life who is married to someone else? If he does, where will fate take his love story? The Title Track: “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha” – Recited by Ajay Devgn! https://youtu.be/3td5tuOVgJo?si=0yoCjBR89a8KHQ4U To Love You Must Have The Courage! Presenting The Official Trailer Of Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha (2024): https://youtu.be/2lr5h0IqArI?si=774kMBJljz5tT0ln The Good: It was indeed a pleasure to see Bollywood’s remarkable romantic duo Ajay Devgn and Tabu once again together on the big screens. Not just on-screen, what spikes my interest in them is Ajay Devgn and Tabu are rumored to be really close. It has been said that Tabu, in her real life, didn’t marry because she had feelings for Ajay Devgn, who is married to actress Kajol. I don’t know how far that’s true, but that’s how the rumors go. So, seeing them together brings back the 90s-era Bollywood’s refreshing memories and also the memories of the cult thriller “Drishyam”. That’s another thing they acted as enemies in “Drishyam”. The track “Ae Dil Zara” From Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha https://youtu.be/ea5DH7ttQ1g?si=Pnir2EYtmEULqPdv The plot of Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is thought-provoking. This love story can surely leave you wondering, why some love stories have to be so full of hardships? The fact is some love stories can never be explained, they just happen and destiny just does not accept them! Imagine going to prison for murder and spending 23 years there and after 23 years, suddenly getting released. I bet the world will appear as a completely new place to anybody who suffers this fate. As young Krishna (Shantanu Maheshwari) committed two murders to save his love Vasudha (Saiee Manjrekar) from gang rape, he had to face a 23-year prison sentence. Vasudha's Dialogue Promo: https://youtu.be/uszTAtpb6SA?si=gUpMAo2snWWpEBmV After 23 years when Krishna was released (Now Ajay Devgn), everything changed. He had to start a new life again. His love (Now Tabu) whom he had saved from the rapists was married to a big-shot named Abhijeet. So, where will fate take Krishna and Vasudha’s lives? The visuals in certain instances had the retro and nostalgic essence of the 90s-era Hindi movies and you will feel that you are really watching one of those melodramatic cinematic pieces from the 90s. Some of the romantic tracks were melodious. Even the romantic dialogues in the movie have the dramatic essence of the 90s-era Hindi dialogues. The filmmakers have cleverly selected a separate casting to showcase the younger versions of Krishna and Vasudha. The screenplay continuously fluctuates from the past to the present throughout the movie. But due to the separate casting, you won’t get confused and will be able to keep track of the proceedings throughout the movie. You will be able to follow when the scenes take the story 23 years in the past and bring it back to the present. "Jahan Se Chale The": The Extended Version Of "Ae Dil Zara" https://youtu.be/V_MGRUomrCg?si=3Vpdwp7qcXvpWJMf The Bad: I am extremely disappointed after watching Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha. To be honest, it was superbly boring. I can bet that if you happen to visit the theater to watch this on-screen torture, you won’t be able to sit in the hall for more than 30 minutes, considering this to be a 2-hour 30-minute movie. Frankly, not just lovers require courage, but you will also require an enormous amount of courage to sit through the end of this movie. The screenplay is extremely slow-paced which makes it intolerably boring in certain instances. Apart from the prison-fight action scenes of Ajay Devgn, there was barely any thrill. The climax revealed a dark truth about Vasudha which could have been thrilling. The ending was shocking but it failed to thrill because of its poor execution. The fact is, the attack and assault on Vashudha were shown multiple times during the screenplay, which made the audience lose interest in the real story at the climax. Krishna's Dialogue Promo: https://youtu.be/Hnpm7S3j3EE?si=fmoSGdEgUjJ_TElr Besides, the melodrama that built itself throughout the screenplay was just unbearable! I must say, this time Ajay Devgn’s natural acting won’t bear fruit. Throughout the movie, Devgn appeared completely expressionless. The fact is, the script has been designed so dully. Also, selecting an unpopular actor like Shantanu Maheshwari as the lead (the younger version of Krishna) was a blunder that the filmmakers committed. He just doesn’t possess the aura of a romantic and daring lover and simply doesn’t fit the character he plays. He, in fact, looked like a spectacled geek who keeps his head buried in books most of the time. Tabu did not have much role to play apart from giving vivid expressions of grief and remorse. Jimmy Sheirgill as Vasudha’s husband, Abhijeet added some inquisitiveness in the minds of the audience. Saiee Manjrekar as the young Vasudha was cheerful and appeared lively, but her fine performance was drowned in this tsunami of a melodrama. The track “Tuu” From Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha https://youtu.be/1ZJZV_-5lUM?si=_CD41uohwiL01Ioi The Verdict: I am astonished at what took the filmmakers a whopping INR 100 Crores to make this disaster! I have to tell you, this film was so boring that in the theater hall, I could see people walking away 20 minutes before the climax happened. Seemed like they just couldn’t bear it anymore! As per reports, this is the biggest disaster that Ajay Devgn has ever participated in. Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha collected only INR 8 Crores at the Box Office. I’m waiting for Ajay Devgn’s “Singham Again”. Hope he can revive his lost image with it. The main problem is Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha has been created a bit too larger than life. I think the name of this movie is apt, “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha”. Allow me to do the honors of extending its name to “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha…Pura Film Dekhne Ko?” which means, “Where Was The Courage In Others To Watch The Entire Movie?” Jokes apart, only I had it! Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage! https://youtu.be/bwiAkkB7R_4?si=0OdVkkTJI0TfcBVN

Dearest Future Husband,
I haven't wrote to you since 2022 and I hope you forgive me for not keeping in touch. Today is the Epiphany of the Lord and last day of Christmas, as far as I heard. I don't know if you know things like that but you don't have to. In connection to that, I just want to share with you an epiphany I had today.
When I was younger and surface-leveled I always thought and believed that having a friendship with a boy/man immediately means it will develop into something more. That the friendship will turn into something romantic. As I grow older, I've become completely protective of my close guy friendships. Protective in a way that I know I wouldn't want anything more to happen between us because I appreciate our rare friendship more than what I can gain if I entertain the thought of being more than friends. I have strong boundaries now and I'm so proud of the woman I'm becoming because of that. I'm still not the best nor am I perfect but I think I'm becoming a better human in totality.
Anyway, I think it's because I haven't had sex in such a long time that I failed that aspect a couple of days ago. So I met this guy online and he added me on Facebook because he thought I was his sister's friend. He's a couple of years younger than me and we'll call him B1 because we both have the same name initials (Sorry, honey. You're my OG! I promise. 😂) I can say I became instantly close to him yet I haven't even met him in person! Our friendship and connection wasn't forced. Things just sort of happened and I like it when things happen like that organically and I think you should know that by now. We even had a call conversation one time around 3 or 4am and we talked until 5 or 6 in the morning! So anyway, we were so comfortable with each other that we got to share our past dark secrets and struggles that I think he got so comfortable, our conversation led to something I didn't want to happen. I didn't even tried to flirt with B1 once because I just really see him as a bro. I said no at first but curiosity and debauchery got the best of me so I lit a fire to a fast-burning match. I had a moment of weakness where I fed his desire and we almost both wanted it but decided maybe we should rethink about it. I told him I can't be the reason his pastoral journey will all be put to waste just because he wants to fuck me and feed his bodily lusts. I want to have sex, of course. At this point I think I may just do it with anyone who I have a real connection with just as long as I trust them and they trust me.
So after that momentary lapse, we decided to reset. We decided we need to help each other so we deleted our first thread where our first conversation was made. We had a talk that we must meet sometime when he gets back from the ship because he is serving the seamen crew. So why am I telling you this story? It's because I hope when we meet our connection is just as organic as this. I hope when we meet you won't get intimidated by me or the riches you will see because truthfully, I'd rather have a simple life with you. Heck, we can live on nipa hut in a province or a cottagecore home away from the city and I'll be happy and content! I hope when you meet me, you will see me for me and the beauty of my heart not only my physical body nor my skin or how sweet-sounding my voice is. I hope when you meet me you are sure and committed to pursue me courageously. I pray that when you meet me, I am closer to being the woman of your dreams. I love you and I miss you. I hope you're having a good start of the year so far and I hope you didn't spend the new year alone. Because the first eight days of my 2023? My god, I have to say I am the luckiest girl in the world!
I have a feeling you will come to me soon. I keep saying this and I said this last year pero hindi ka dumating! Hahaha. Pero I had a prophetic dream about you on the day of mom's birthday. My church elder said: "Wait for it. It will come soon." And I know my church elder was talking about you because I know he was talking about love. Then praise and dancing was also in the dream and a word of God came to me in my dream again that said: "Your joy comes from the Lord."
And wait for you, my love, I shall.
This I promise you,
J

Entertainment Spotlight: Anjali Bhimani
Actress, singer, and author Anjali Bhimani is always on the move. You may recognize her from Netflix’s Special, or from Critical Role’s Exandria Unlimited as the fire genasi Fy'ra Rai. Anjali also voices main characters in popular video games including ‘Symmetra’ in Overwatch, ‘Rampart’ in Apex Legends, and ‘Kala’ in Indivisible. Her first book entitled I Am Fun Size, and So Are YOU: Thoughts from a Tiny Human on Living a Giant Life will be out soon, and Anjali took time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about her upcoming book, which video game she'd want to be stuck in, and more:
If a series were made about your life, what would it be titled and what type of show would it be (comedy, musical, mystery, drama, etc)?
It would be a musical romantic action comedy. I know that seems like a lot of disparate genres, but my life has been as all over the place as that. It would be the “Everything Bagel” of television. I see a whole number where I’m doing full on stunts and singing while I unwittingly and clumsily fight off bad guys and eventually find my perfect partner - and given that my husband and I run around the house singing songs to the dog, the only part that’s missing in real life is the action hero part. I just have always wanted to be an action hero, so I’m throwing that in there. And I want to get to wear incredible corseted gowns or stretch leather pants as we do it.
The title? Welllll….truth told, I’m writing something that isn’t exactly autobiographical, but has a title that I would TOTALLY use if it were my life story. So, you’ll just have to wait and see when it comes out and guess if that’s the one. Either that or I’m Not Your Freakin’ Auntie (If you know, you know).
Can you teach us something?
There is an INCREDIBLE creature in India called the Malabar Giant Squirrel and it is…I kid you not…PURPLE. Multicolored, actually. I learned this doing a show called Rival Peak…my character was a nature expert and she mentioned this magical creature and I couldn’t believe it existed. So I went online and went down the proverbial rabbit hole. Or the squirrel hole, I guess. I was in such disbelief when I learned about it, I actually looked it up on Snopes and yep…it’s real. (I’m still nervous someone is going to tell me someday that it’s a hoax, so I think I’m going to have to go to India and see one in person before I can fully believe. But that day will be as magical as the day I first hung out with quokkas in Australia…maybe even better.
What would you like a review of your book to say (we're manifesting!)?
“Although the cover I Am Fun Size and So Are You may look whimsical and lighthearted - and it is at times - once I dove into its pages I learned so many new ways of looking at challenges, I realized it was something I'd be going back to visit again and again, like that good friend you’re always excited to see, for years and years.”
Basically, I’d love to hear that the reviewer found something…even just one thing, but hopefully more, that helps them in their life too. And that they can keep going back to for new ways to look at the world.
What are you overthinking about right now?
These answers! Ha! No, no…
It sounds a little weird, but I think I’m overthinking about thinking. I can get so caught up in how the mind - or my mind works - and trying to psych myself out to get myself to do things the "right” way, rather than just DOING the thing, and going with simple but not easy solutions. Being a perfectionist is a great way to never get anything done.
What are your favorite catch phrases or lines from the video games that you voice over?
I’ve loved “Welcome to my reality,” one of Symmetra’s voice lines, since Overwatch first came out, because it’s sort of a declaration of being in her territory - like she’s saying “You’re in my world now.” And her ultimate in Hindi sounds so powerful, Yahi Param Vaastavikta Hai (which, translated, means “This is the ultimate reality”) that I love saying it. I also love “If I can think it, I can create it” - so aspirational. And I’m pretty thrilled that Rampart says “Dope” because I say it in real life all the time…although 90% of her lines are guaranteed to make me smile. I’m definitely a little more like her in real life than Sym, as much as I may aspire to be as elegant as Symmetra is, Rampart’s “no filter” style is probably closer to me in the real world.
If you were caught in the universe of a video game, which game would it be and what would you do?
Okay, I haven’t finished playing it (another embarrassing admission, but it’s a time issue) but the Last Guardian, because that beautiful puppy dragon is a creature I NEED to have in my life.
What’s a class that you think should be part of every high school curriculum?
Two classes: Personal Finance and Civics. It’s ridiculous to me that I learned how to balance a checkbook in grade school and then everything else I learned about money came from my parents. I’m shocked by how many people graduate from school with no understanding of basic personal accounting. And civics because I think we’ve lost the ability to have civil discourse about different opinions about policy. The whole basis for a democracy is that we should have an understanding of how the system works and that the electorate should be privy to all the information we need to make informed decisions.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter the entertainment industry, but either doesn’t know where to start or lacks the confidence to put themselves out there?
There are so many aspects to being an entertainer or an artist that I don’t think there is any one right way to do any of it, so lead with what gives you the most joy. Usually, our way “in” to something is a combination of what brings us joy and what we either have natural talent at or a burning desire to learn. If you love dancing, you’re likely to train more in it, and be better at it, and maybe that’s your way in to the industry. While it’s so easy to look at someone else’s path and think you have to do it the way they do, really it’s your uniqueness combined with your passion and focus that is going to make you successful…at anything, really. So combine what brings you joy with dogged determination to be good at it and create, and find that excitement that drowns out the fear.
Can you share an insight or excerpt from one of the sections in your upcoming book that especially impacted you/your life, and tell us a bit about it?
Sure…in the book I talk about the time - a specific series of events - when I realized that nervousness and excitement are essentially the same physiological sensations, but with different thought processes: for me, I noticed when I was nervous I was thinking about everything that could go wrong, and when I was excited, I was thinking about how fun it was going to be to tackle the unknown. It’s changed the way I look at live performance, auditions, and really so many times in life. And it’s actually made me welcome so many of those physical sensations that I used to try to tamp down. When I get that sensation of my breathing get a little bit shorter or my heart start to go a little faster, usually I can clock it, and focus my thoughts on what could go right instead of wrong…then it feels like my body is preparing rather than panicking.
Do you have a mantra?
Success through lowered expectations. Honestly…it sounds like pessimism, but for me it’s actually more about not attaching to outcomes. I’m very impressionable AND have a lot of very high expectations of myself. So when I think I have to achieve something, I tend to get so attached to the outcome that I shut myself off to other, potentially better outcomes. I’ve learned for myself that the less I’m focused on specific expectations, the more open I am to wonder and surprises. Some of the best things in my life have come when I’ve completely let go of the “hope” of something and just focused on knowing something good will come, eventually, even if I don’t know what it is.
Thanks for taking the time, Anjali!

Just wanted to share something here
Since my readers here have seen me more intimately than most people I know in real life - through my stories. My stories and the ones I read are my escape because I'm a romantic at heart and I can't wait to get married and have a happily ever after.
I've never liked anyone in real life though. If I did like a guy he would open his mouth and my feelings would automatically evaporate. I thought... maybe I have unrealistic expectations... that I can only be satisfied with someone like Steve or Sherlock (who are not even real)
There's just this one guy I've liked in real life. What I feel for him is more than like though, not exactly love, it's very hard to describe because I barely know him but I know I could love him. I've been around him my whole life, he's a family friend and 6 years older than me (I would actually prefer someone my age I just happened to like an older guy lol)
I think he's really really handsome. My friends think I'm out of his league and he's not even average. He told me he can't find a gf a few years ago and I was like... wtf how? Someone as attractive as him, with such a nice personality too, should be able to find a girl easily.
Now I'm a very traditional girl. I think the man should ask me out, arrange a date, pay for the said dates, be a proper daddy.
But this guy is very shy and introverted so I figured I'd take a chance and ask him out. Better than regretting not doing so...
I told him that I liked him and wanted to be his partner.
He was shocked. Not horrified... he was smiling uncomfortably. He told me he doesn't see me that way and never has. He said his parents have an age gap of 7 years but nowadays it doesn't happen. And me telling him this was completely unexpected. Y'all he was so shocked.
I said... that's fine. Having feelings for someone isn't something you can control.
And that was that. I got rejected. I don't regret asking him but I feel like a 'chutiya'. Hindi for 'stupid fucking idiot'.
I wanted to marry him... I don't know it wouldve been so perfect if he had said yes. A part of me did want to idk press harder and be like you can try to bring those feelings about (by like idk dating) but I'm not desperate...
I'm still a chutiya because like I hope he texts me or tells me that he had changed his mind. Love hurts😢😢 Idk. What I felt was so strong and how can it be one sided? Am I really that delusional? I just want to get married. I've wanted that my whole life and I wanted to marry him. I prayed to God multiple times for him to say yes to me.
And now I've got to get up early tomorrow. Idk if I'll even be able to sleep.

Indian Representation in Bridgerton and Bridgerton Fanfiction
When it came out in February that season 2 of Bridgerton would feature "Kate Sharma" as the female romantic lead rather than "Kate Sheffield", I definitely had mixed feelings as a person of Indian descent myself.
To clarify, it wasn't that Simone Ashley was cast in the role- I thought that was fantastic and I really hope it helps in normalizing dark-skinned people of color as romantic leads. What bothered me in particular was the fact that her name was now Kate Sharma.
Names carry great meaning and even greater histories behind them, and the implications of a name such as "Sharma" in Regency England are too messy to ignore, both in the actual TV show as well and the fandom at large.
For one, how is the TV show going to explain it? How are they going to explain how a family that is obviously of South-Asian descent managed to access the upper echelons (the upper echelons- I am aware there were some people of Indian descent in the UK at this time- mostly working in professions related to maritime trade and usually in port cities) and how are they welcomed? This is an era where racism and colonialism was running rampant as the United Kingdom continued in its quest to literally conquer and colonize half the world, including the various states that made up the region we now know as India. Bridgerton can't even pull the colorblind excuse anymore since Lady Danbury gave that horrible explanation that King George III (who literally supported the enslavement of Black people in real life) fell in love with a Black woman, and racism towards Black people was conveniently solved.
What makes Anthony and Kate Sharma's relationship even more uncomfortable is that Anthony, as a hereditary peer (he's a viscount) gets a seat in the House of Lords, a governing body of the United Kingdom that directly impacted how the East India Company was ruling, annexing, and waging war with Indian states in this exact time period. How does one explain that?
Plus, while there has been an overwhelmingly positive response in the fandom to Kate being a British-Indian woman(from what I've seen), it's also been kinda weird to see the fetishization of Indian culture within the fandom because of this change. I've seen so many posts about wanting to see Kate in a lehenga and I don't... know? How to feel about that? I'd rather see Kate not "othered" because of her cultural attire in Season 2, and I hope that they just give her pretty Regency-era clothes like the rest of the characters. I also have a deathly fear of Kate being Parvati and Padma Patil-ed (the real ones know this).
There's also the matter of how Indian culture is being portrayed in Bridgerton fanfiction. There are a people who seem happy to claim "Kate Sharma" as diverse POC rep in their fics on ao3 or tumblr, but never really follow through with the full implications of having a girl with the last name "Sharma" so Kate is therefore indistinguishable from a white girl. There are also others that I have seen engage with Indian culture in a very surface-level way that seems like borderline stereotyping, like Kate is wearing a red shirt because "red is an important color to Indians" (like what? Are you going to explain how? Red is no more or less important than other colors such as saffron, green, white) or the only Indian food Kate/Anthony ever eat in the fic is chicken tikka.
Anyway, this is leading to the point that I don't expect people to know all this- there is a reason I'm writing it out. But I feel like if you do not know or are unsure, either research (especially if you're writing stories), or ask someone who does know. I'm offering myself as one such resource. For example, someone on tumblr recently asked me about a Hindi translation of something for a Bridgerton fic, and while my knowledge of that particular language is surface-level, I was more than happy confirm what I knew online, and get back to them.
Bridgerton changed the game when they created this more inclusive, less racist universe, and I think it's up to us to figure out how to meaningfully engage with that.

Oscars 2022: Best Feature Film Nominees Ranked
April 12, 2022
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
1. Drive My Car
Despite being in a language I don’t understand and set in a culture I know little about, this film felt the most personal out of all the nominations. It’s an engrossing tale of a man struggling with grief and forgiveness. Through his interactions with the various people around him and his deep involvement in the play he’s directing, he gains a different perspective to life. Of those, the most unconventional relationship he forms, is with his driver, as they bond over their respective griefs. Though there is nothing exceptional about the storyline, Drive My Car excels due to the deeply etched out characters and the emotion driven scenes. The film builds an experience revolving around the world of the main character whose grief is personally captivating. His screen presence and the growth in his character are endearing. The film also consists of beautifully framed shots that it even more profound. Overall, it is an enjoyable and powerful film that I will love watching again.
2. CODA
The film that won the title of best picture is the one of the most deserving. A remake of French-Belgian film, La Famille Bélier, with story elements similar to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s classic Hindi film, Khamoshi: The Musical, CODA follows a child of deaf parents who wishes to pursue a career in music. It is an engaging storyline, with strong buildup, and emotionally intimate characters. We are drawn into the main character’s struggles with her identity and at the same time enlightened about the deaf community. It is an overall package with a combination of drama, comedy, and romance, behind a powerful journey.
3. West Side Story
When a classic is remade it struggles to live up to the original and endless comparisons cause it to lose significance. However, as someone who has not seen the original film adaptation or theatre play, and has little knowledge of the plot, I was able to view this film with a fresh outlook. West Side Story is a ridiculously outdated story of love at first sight but Steven Spielberg’s direction makes even the absurd believable, romantic, and passionate. He creates a unique world full of artistic brilliance. The amazing set design and detailed lighting and cinematography are used in a metaphorical sense, a style which is rare in recent films that focus on realism. The use of the visual medium to convey emotions adds much more depth to an otherwise superficial plot and creates an entertaining output. West Side Story is cinema in its purest form.
4. Dune
Dune is a visually stunning masterpiece that serves as a powerful origin story for a hero in a science fiction universe of emperors, houses, and outcasts. The film is about the power struggle between outsiders over a land of spices, as the original inhabitants of the planet continuously suffer. This intriguing storyline of a new world has multiple references to real world colonialism. Alongside the symbolism, it also provides identifiable characters, whose mental struggles are not much different from ours. The hero is struggling between two different identities and family histories. His father’s title and his mother’s power clash ultimately leading to an identity crisis within. The film is symbolically, visually, and personally powerful. However, while it is captivating, it isn’t entirely satisfying. The development is extremely slow with focus on pulling us into this world rather than into action. Yet, it achieves its intention and provides a great setup for a sequel.
5. Don’t Look Up
Don’t Look Up is a hilarious satire that uses the arrival of a deadly comet as a metaphor for current real-life issues that can lead to the end of the world. This black comedy portrays “comedic dread” as it transitions constantly and abruptly between comic leisure and resonating themes. It is hilariously depressing which shows how effective it is. While the script is brilliant, the execution veers between a powerful satire and a lengthy comedy sketch, sometimes coming off as a bit too amateurish. The topic is important but the filmmaking could have been better. However, the grand cast, with their brilliant comic timing keep the film engaging as the crisis in the narrative ripples out of control.
6. King Richard
A heartwarming biopic on the growing years of tennis players Serena and Venus Williams, King Richard beautifully shows the contrast between the taste of success and the struggles of being a person of color in America. As these two youngsters rise, they also confront the racism and dangers around them both from outside their community and within. The focus of the story is on their father and his guidance in their journey, giving it a unique perspective in comparison to the typical biopic. But the arc of the narrative is conventional. It has a predictable layout with an obvious conclusion. The journey isn’t unique enough for the film to be too different. However, it is engaging and focuses on important issues making it a worthwhile watch.
7. Belfast
The life of a young boy is transformed overnight as he is confronted with religious divides and cultural disparities in 1960s Ireland. A semi-autobiographical story set in a tumultuous period, Belfast follows a family that grapples with the changing political climate and economic struggles within their community. The themes are relevant to children today who struggle with understanding the difference between “good” and “bad’ as adults around them propagate religious extremism and racial divides. Filmed in black and white, the film is artistically brilliant using the most powerful aspects of non-color storytelling (lights, shadows, and framing). But the story and characters are not impactful enough for the cinematic techniques to have a strong effect. The plot is slightly engaging and enlightening, but not as personal as other critics deem it to be. And there is very little to connect to in the characters, making it an emotionally weak narrative. However, it is a meaningful film, making it worth a one time watch.
8. Nightmare Alley
In a neo-noir remake of the 1947 film of the same name, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley follows a young man’s rise and fall in his ambitious drive to boost his psychic career. Though the overall story arc is powerful, the progression is weak. It takes time to develop, focusing instead on visual storytelling. For a majority of the first half, there is no clear direction. Much of the development seems pointless with no proper end in sight. Despite a weak buildup, the film has all the makings of a noir. An ambitious, yet foolish male character, is enchanted by a femme fatale, leading to his ultimate destruction. The camerawork and editing also take the essence of the noir style, with unique framings and contrasting greens and yellows. But the aesthetic visuals are not enough to support the weak script.
9. The Power of the Dog
Based on a 1967 novel of the same name, The Power of the Dog, is about a rancher who resorts to intimidation when his brother brings home a new wife and her son. As time passes, however, he slowly discovers and understands parts of himself that he had repressed for years. The film subverts the cliches of a typical Western by questioning the very ideal on which it is built, the idea of masculinity. As the characters struggle with their sense of self, their relationships with one another change, leading to an interesting climax. Thematically and visually the film is powerful, but the metaphors are not worthwhile if the film is not engaging enough. It is extremely slow in the first half only picking up pace as the narrative begins to unravel. The context for that narrative is important but requires much patience and full attention. It includes many scenes of solitude which can be unnerving when there is little emotional attachment to the characters. While the film is certainly impactful in parts, the themes aren’t powerful enough to carry the two hour long film.
10. Licorice Pizza
Licorice Pizza is the weakest of the Oscar nominations this year. It is a coming of age drama about two youngsters who grow, find themselves, and fall in love in 1970s California. While the film is slightly fun and cute, there is nothing spectacular about it. It has a positive start with a unique ‘first meeting’ between two prospective lovers but quickly begins to meander. There is no defined concept which makes it essential for character development to drive plot. However, from the onset there is a disconnect from the two main characters and the period in which it is set. Maybe it is the cultural context, but many dialogues, jokes, and references were confusing to me and is possibly why I personally had difficulty connecting to the film. But, despite its flaws, the film was a decent watch.

nacurious aq sa game nyo kaya pwede po bang magparticipate 🥺👉👈 *uses this as an excuse to dump a bunch of feelings i ran over with a garbage trak*
dear charo CHOS
consecutively through the years of highschool, wala akong habol sa love life. kahit na nakikita kong nag hhww or motmot mga tropa ko, masaya na akong nakikita na inlab sila. kuntento akong tagabigay ako ng advice, since unbiased nga ako regarding the feelings of being in a relationship; outside person ba?
summer before tenth grade, i bought a couple's bracelet from my friend na nagnenegosyo by selling locally from a larger seller. circular beads with vine-like engravings. ung isa puro white then isang bead is black, then the other is inverse. i joked “my significant other is myself XD”. during that time, my mindset was: i don't need a partner, kumpleto na ako by myself (with the thought na hindi ako magiging complete if may partner ako, as if 50/50 kami and hindi ako 100) tsaka hindi ko priority ang mga ganyan HAHAHAH promise, i don't think i'd do a good job handling one. di na nga ako marunong ng social cues dahil di nga ako tao minsan, kailangan ko pang mapag-aralan ang lablyfe lablyfe na yan huhu kaya wag muna ngauon dahil lahat ng oras ko nakatungo sa pagtatapos lol
of course, influenced yun (wanting to stay single/more like alone) with the fact na i've been going through something big and gradual, affecting my mental health. i was too emotional and emotionally dull at the same time, i was lonely, i was incomplete. i had a lot of pride, and i thought na i wouldn't be a whole person that loved myself if had someone to love me back. kasi tama naman diba? you need to fill yourself with love, bonux nalang ung love from a partner.
then came prom season. may cotillion dance na ihahatid sa prom night in february, so during some day in january, nagstart magsearch ng volunteers to dance for cotillion and practice.
kasali ako dun, kasi i had the lingering thought na “wala na nga akong lovelife, di ako palalabas, tutok ako sa pag-aaral, tapos di ko to susubukan tulad ng iba? hindi ko bama naisulit pagiging sekundarya ko” see the vibe? i was basing values from other people, at hindi ako. it proves na i wasn't content with myself.
i had a designated dance partner, kaso may gustong iba ang gg di ginawang practice lang pero understand ba’t nagback-out. kaso since i was a bit vulnerable then, i also thought na it's also because hindi ako womanly or attractive unlike the others na nag-aayos or may wari. pero di ako madungis no! di nga lang “makadalaga” 🙄 i tried to not let the insecurity bother me, i made it up for my average pero still :/
eh may naging partner rin akong iba na diniditch rin ng partner nya? i was exasperated and told him na maging tentative dance partner muna kami, to which our mentor agreed kasi stressed na sya, umoo nalang kasi nga hagardo verzosa.
he was sheepish, quiet and introverted. he was gentle and awkward, and it was obvious na he wasn't used to interacting with the opposite gender, kasi kalmado naman sya with his friends. but i was calm naman, and that seemed to ease him. i also cracked jokes every once in a while when i felt potential tension, kasi we needed to get the job done. i was also very understanding and patient. (brought 2 u by being ate of the family WHAHAHAH)
his actions were fragile, and he held me as if i was even more as such. (please take note na hindi ako kinikilig huhu cringe lang aq ng slight because of my behaviour back then.) vulnerable, i felt warm at heart when he was gentle, and when he was bashful. the relationship we had was wordless. our connection was gradual; it developed from something to something else real slow yet still very quick for me.
we started from stumbling and chuckling around. yet i'd still guide him kasi he never danced before, and since i had the air of a leader, i knew how to be patient and how to teach him while hand to hand. i honestly don't know where it started to turn, i just wanted to have him as a closer friend, until i suddenly found there was something growing between us.
i spoke softly between us, he spoke more and he laughed more, smiled more. we preferred sitting by the other during breaks, and during last minute discussions before dismissal, we'd sit by eachother. he used discord, e kaso di compatible un sa device ko and magulong maaccess thru chrome kaya naginstall nalang sya ulit ng messenger when our mutual friend told him i sent him a message.
it kept developing by then. our hold started to linger, our touches were soft, and in any way possible, we'd still have skin contact. tuwing magpapause ung music and may icocorrect yung instructor, hawak nya pa rin kamay ko at hinihigpitan ko naman ung sakanya, na ibabalik nya naman. then during water breaks we'd spend the time with eachother. then during last minutes magkatabi kami and our hands secure between us, him hiding it because we both wanted it private without speaking.
it was wordless talaga, kaya nabigla ako when it went towards the more romantic route. he suggested some advances that he allowed enough space for me to rejec, which i did almost all the time unless it's just hand-holding or yakap lang HAAHA d q alam kung ano tawag samin e, sabi ng tropa ko MU daw e di ko naman peg un, pero i was glad it wasnt serious. i wasnt ready kahit na it seemed we had a deep connection. we sat by eachother came prom night, and he wore the other part of the couple bracelet that my friends teased me and they gave it to him. we were quiet and many people we knew teased us since we were the more on the quiet side of the student body.
then came summer vacation and i ghosted him WHAHAHAHAH for a good cause!! nagkalabuan na kami, i always gave him time and made the effort while more often he doesnt reciprocate and sometimes di pansin for weeks. i swear it's nothing like clingy aq and i needed his attention 25/8, i knew my limits and his. well, his loss :// di rin naman ako ready e, so it was bound to happen.
plus, i felt much better after that because i realized i was forcing myself to act more feminine. and that time was years before i realized i was actually non-binary, and more masculine. i knew he was much hetero and he'd rather a true feminine partner. plus, he envisioned the future with me as a housewife tapos sya daw ung nagtatrabaho 🤢 pero anyway, i think i'd much rather have a female partner or actually just lgbt-aware partner.
ty missus!!

Omg anon, this is so intimate 🥺 thank you for sharing? AND ALSO, I WAS SMIRKING THE WHOLE STORY BUT you lost me at the last part when he said he sees you as a housewife lang 😔👊
Anyways, I'm glad you've moved on from him! And LMAO it's his loss for limiting his self to feminine preferences. Women (and men, tbh) are uniquely different. To limit your choices is stupid Lol 🙄
Also, I tried looking for a female character I know that will do you good talaga but they just don't seem to fit 😔 I ended up with a male character, I hope you don't mind.
I choose Chanwoo for you!

Recs for recent Tamil and Telugu films .. .. ..
Bahubali is a good film, although I feel as if most people already know about it.
Pelli Choopulu, Fidaa, and Sita are romantic-comedies from the last couple years that were good.
Fidaa leans more towards a slice of life (kind of) since the only conflict is the main leads figuring out their mutual feelings - but its a fun watch.
Pelli Choopulu's plot is mainly about two people who decide to work together & achieve their goals & in the process fall in love. The main leads are engaged to different people - but instead of taking the sad star-crossed lovers route or an overbearingly possessive behaviour - they act like actual adults & support each others dream without expecting more than the friendship they've developed. Which is rare enough in any romance media that it left an impression.
Aadai is a thriller centered around a reporter who wakes up naked in an abandoned building trying to find something to cover herself so she can leave and get help. It doesn't sound like much but its a well-made movie that was interesting to watch and the plot manages to tie-in a bit of social commentary without feeling heavy handed.
Eureka is a murder mystery set in a college. The main lead is the usual brash thug-like guy who's always ready to fight. He finds the body of a guy he had fought with the previous day and decided to find out the real killer before he (main lead) gets convicted for the crime. the female lead is just there to be a love interest & contributes little to the plot. The movie isn't something to write home about but its an ok watch.
Manam isn't a recent film (internet says it came out in 2014) but its good. About a guy whose parents die when he's a kid, several years later when he's an established businessman he sees the reincarnations of his parents and tries to set them up again. Unknown to him, an old man is also trying to set him (the businessman) up with a doctor, as they are reincarnations of his (the old man) parents that passed away decades ago. The movie takes full advantage of the reincarnation trope and is lots of fun.
Special mentions to Seven (mystery-thriller) about 4 different women claiming to be the wife of a man accused of murder - except they all have conflicting stories (its still available on Netflix i think). And Laxmii (horror-comedy)( which is a hindi-language remake of a tamil film) about a man possessed by the ghost of a transgender woman who wants to avenge her murder at the hands of a gang boss.
Hmm .. thats all the films I could think of that I enjoyed recently, hopefully one of these is to your liking? :D
Thank you very much!!!!
