Time to finally pick up my booklog again! And I had a lot of time to read lately, just no time to post about it. So I have some backlog. Reread one of my darlings: Alan Bradley's The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie / Mord im Gurkenbeet.

I'm honestly not even sure what genre this series is? Are they murder mysteries because there's always a corpse around to investigate? Kid novels because our protagonist is 11 years old and a lot of the story is about her family? Historical fiction because they play in 1950? Who cares! The Flavia de Luce stories are awesome. Flavia is immensely clever, so following her around is fun and, thanks to Alan Bradley's research addiction, choke-full of 1950s immersion. But she's also a kid with quirks and a difficult familial situation and the ego you would expect from an 11-year-old. Her thoughts are a bit prone to hopping around, but tbh I love that, too. It makes her so relatable to pick up a suspicion one moment and drop it the next. And luckily, she takes a break every once in a while to sort out the facts, so nothing gets lost. The whole book is funny, suspenseful, clever, and so heartfelt.

How do you do anatomy? And when you get artblock, what are you doing?

anatomy: make stuff up use references, observe bodies in art + media + ur everyday life, look at anatomy notes! i got taco1704's book (it's in KR and EN) but they also posted a lot of it online; simodasketch and kawaiisensei also have a lot of excellent diagrams. and sometimes i really do just make stuff up

artblock: that's harder to answer :') i got pretty burned out and couldn't draw anything good for what felt like months, even though i tried every day... if you get stuck, i think it's probably better to take a break and go consume instead of create for awhile. i played a bunch dawntrail/fields of mistria and started reading orv until the worms came back home haha. recharge ur battery and look for new inspiration...!

A cute bookshop I found during my vacation. Can you tell it's by the seaside?

Third in Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series - we're talking A Red Herring Without Mustard / Halunken, Tod und Teufel. Side note, I know the titles usually include a quote or a clever wordplay that's difficult to translate into German, but they could put in a little more effort. The translation overall is nice; only the titles are usually left wanting...

I'm taking a few small issues with this book. Don't get me wrong; that's still whining from a high ground - reading the ups and downs of investigation was fun as usual, the worldbuilding is once again subtly expanded, and Flavia gets up to her shenanigans. I guess it's just the small things piling up. Flavia de Luce novels always require a bit of suspension of disbelief as so many dead people just happen to find their way to the precocious eyes of our heroine, but the cult in her hometown was a bit. Eh. A bit of a big thing to have gone unnoticed all of Flavia's nosy life. And then there's the timely racism. I kinda shrugged it off in the first novel because, while the Colonel's idea of a "Chinese mage" was staggering, he also clearly expressed the notions of what had been a 1920s' schoolboy. And Colonel de Luce is not our protagonist; Flavia is, so it felt removed and not to be taken at face value. Flavia being choke-full of clichés about "gypsies", and the story repeatedly confirming those, was more immediately uncomfortable.

And there's Porcelain. *sigh* See, the previous book also had a quarrelsome female friend for Flavia, and while Nialla had her moments, I still found her overall sympathetic and Flavia's headbutting communication with her fun to read. Porcelain however is utterly charmless. Her behavior makes no sense, she's constantly hostile to Flavia who goes out of her way to help her, and SPOILER WARNING that scene with Porcelain bewitching the collective de Luces in Harriet's dress bears the uncomfortable notion of Colonel de Luce being enchanted by a skinny 16-year-old in an adult woman's dress, who's clearly trying to impersonate his dead wife to some degree. Ugh, that was icky. I was glad when Porcelain took her leave. She had way too much presence for my taste.

TL;DR - risking to appear a bit overly strict here, this is imho still one of the weaker books of the series, so it gets three out of five glass orbs to ponder: 🔮🔮🔮

I feel that you think if you do good by others you will attract good karma into your life or the universe will magically bless you for your good deeds, when that's not how it works. If you wish for change, you have to be the change you seek. For 2024, you should focus on your self concept and understanding how the 3D works. The 3D reality is your external world, it will reflect back to your most inner prominent thoughts. You have the key to manifest your best potential. Harness your skills and work on improving them. Be careful with your triggers as well. The universe will test you along your journey. So you may experience things that are an inconvenience or attract things you may not necessarily "want". For example, if you are manifesting wealth in 2024, but keep having issues with your finances. Instead of reacting to this and having thoughts or complaints that you're "broke". Release the fears that you have regarding abundance. If you are manifesting money but only receive a $20 dollar bill, be grateful for that $20 dollar bill, for someone else may not even have cash at all. Think of it as a small start to success. You have to liberate yourself from limiting beliefs and see the prosperity that surrounds you and that it is also given to you. If you are someone who sees things as "glass half empty", your perspective will change graciously and the blessings in 2024 will teach you how to see with a "glass half full". Don't waste your youth away worried about finding the one, just go have fun! It doesn't matter how old you are! Wear those heels and put yourself out there! You are going to regret it if you don't focus on your happiness in the future so make it happen. In 2024, your life will be spontaneous and adventurous!
