where the arch meets

I have not read King of Scars so I do not know anything about the plot therefore some information about Nikolai could be outdated. This is also the first time I've ever written for this fandom so hopefully I did the characters justice. My friend and I watched S&B and were talking about ships and I said I wanted to see Kaz and Nikolai together which then prompted whatever the hell happened here, please enjoy!

Kaz stares out the window, a glum look on his usually stoic face. Ketterdam was alive, unusual joy spinning itself in the streets as the city busies itself for the arrival of the one and only King Nikolai Lantsov. The festivities of the "Peacekeeper" as he had been so lovingly named, had started three long days ago. Every day that Kaz wakes up to popping streamers, and the litany of ballads associated with the King's ever growing list accomplishments, is a day his stolen peace gets ripped from beneath him. He's not even sure why the King is so popular. He can't say he was anywhere near impressed enough at their brief meeting to warrant the five different ballads about those hazel eyes alone. Kaz looks down at the papers littering his desk, crow club books and bank statements for his various 'assets', communications between the various councils in Ravka and Ketterdam, and the most recent letter from Inej, smelling of the sea.

Their friendship is something of a mystery to the world but between them she is the rock that kept him steady. Even now, with her sailing the high seas content to her freedom, he can feel the unwavering quiet of her. Briefly, he wishes she were here. She would make him laugh, tell him to stop being so glum about the brown-eyed, blonde haired king if he insisted on doing nothing about it. He wouldn't let his amusement at her teasing show, but later in the safety of his room, this room, he'd let a rare smile show. He misses their quiet friendship most of all. But she is happy on her ship with her crew and he has shit to do. He always has shit to do.

The thought, stark and unwelcome, snaps him back to the present. A scowl replaces his faraway look as he shuts the window to the new round of baudy tunes drifting up and straight into the headache knocking at his skull. He sits back down harder than he intended, and winces at the pain that lances down his back and into his leg. He can hear Nina, chastising him for not putting on the salve, for not resting. But he doesn't have the time. He can't do something as normal as rest. He has a city to run. Or at least the underbelly of a city to run.

The statements stare at him but the numbers swirl like melting ice-cream in a bowl, and he wants to throw the pages in the fire in frustration. But he has never acted on emotion, and he will not start now. So he pushes away from his desk, cane already cool under his fingertips, and makes his way to the floors of the crow club.

The passage muffles the sounds of chips cluttering on a table, and glasses set down hard on the wood, and shouting when someone wins, loses, almost gets decked for supposed cheating. But as soon as he steps past the doors, nodding at the two guards he'd posted at this entrance, all of that chaos surrounds him. There is no hush as he steps into the room, no blanket of fear or anger or anything. They don't even know he is there. They won't until he makes himself known. Spending years with his Wraith had taught him some things, even with the click of his cane. He looks to the corner expecting to spot Jesper; his heart, as it had done every day since they had all parted ways, clenched upon seeing the empty space where his sharpshooter was supposed to be. The disappointment doesn't stop his eyes from travelling to the table closest to the kitchens— or as the Nina lovingly called it, the muck hut— where Wylan was usually hunched over notebooks or losing to just about everyone, except maybe Inej, in a game of cards.

He misses them. He'd never tell them, would never let it so much as flash across his face, but he couldn't stop his heart from the same onslaught. He felt it every day. Every time he looked to his window and Inej wasn't perched atop it. Every time he walked to the gambling tables and Jesper wasn't leaning over it, brown eyes shining with hope. Every time he wandered the corridors of the club hearing Wylan's flute. When he decides to put salve on it's because he hears Nina's voice, sees her frown, as she tries so hard to heal them. He even misses Matthias but that is a road he doesn't allow himself to go down. A failure he cannot yet acknowledge. His trip down memory lane ends abruptly when a man with a hood over his eyes, shadowing his face, steps up to him.

"You Kaz, Kaz Brekker?" The voice is rough, almost too rough, but the lilting accent is familiar. Before he can place it the man is talking again.

"I want to speak with you, about a deal."

Kaz tilts his head, resting gloved hands on his cane as he takes the figure in. "Liar."

The man sputters jerking back, and just briefly he catches a glimpse of golden skin and something shiny pinned to his coat. "It's urgent!" The man's voice is not so rough, and that accent, charming in a way, bleeds through more and more.

"I'm not available for deals." It is not true, but he wants to see how they'll react, what they're capable of if he says no.

"You'll like this one." The roughness has been replaced by arrogance. And the world opens wide for Kaz.

"Come," He turns, already limping towards the doors and his rooms beyond. "Don't say anything until we're behind closed doors"

It takes them exactly one minute and twelve seconds to get to his study. As soon as he hears the door click behind him, he lifts his cane and with brutal precision he rips through the clasp at the man's chest and watches the coat land in a heap on his wooden floor. Letting the crows head of his cane fall back into his hand he finally looks up. "What are you doing here King?" The question holds more exhaustion than he's willing to admit.

"What?" The King of Ravka grins, beautiful and bright and full of arrogance, "You aren't happy to see me?"

And Kaz wants to tell him no and piss off and leave me alone, but his heart is pounding and there is blood rushing between his ears and he doesn't really remember what breathing does, how it works. Because this is the first time he's ever seen Nikolai. When they met all those years ago he was Sturmhond, the privateer. Since then Kaz has only seen posters, and art. But none of them, not a single one, has ever done the king justice. He is........ he is magic.

"Oh come on," The blonde is laughing. It sounds like water. It sounds like peace. "You can't expect me to act like a stranger after all the letters we've sent." Yes, the letters. The updates King Nikolai had requested about Ketterdam, about the barrel, about the illegal smuggling of grisha to work as slaves. Those letters. "What?" The King looks at him speculatively, amusement sparking in his hazel eyes— they suit him so much better than the green of Sturmhond. "Volcra got your tongue?"

“Didn't know you would be in town," Kaz manages to grind out. He hopes it sounds like irritation and not infatuation.

"The six million posters and seven ballads about my adventures aboard the Kingfisher were not notice enough?" That grin is back. It is ruining him. "Oh dear, next time I'll be sure to add floating parades to the mix."

"That's tomorrow." He glowers. He doesn't think the blonde could get anymore insufferable. He is wrong.

"Do you have plans to attend then?"

He ignores the question, the tease. "What are you doing here Lantsov?"

"I'm here for the festival Mr, Brekker."

"I mean here." He motions to the room, to him. "What are you doing in the Barrel, in my club—" He wants to say 'in my room'. He catches himself.

"I came," Nikolai steps a little closer. There's still do much distance between them, practically an ocean, but Kaz can feel the tension wrapping around his lungs. He wants out. He wants closer. He wants, he wants, he wants....... "To visit a friend Mr Brekker. I don't exchange letters detailing my failed attempt at diving through the sky with just anyone." Oh saints he's going to die. He's never going to survive this. His face is a brick wall, a crack where his frown breaks through.

"You are a busy man King, busier even, than i am." He wants to applaud himself for the steadiness of his voice. "I doubt that you had time to just pop by. So what do you want, Nikolai?"

There is a flash of something in those beautiful eyes, and he wants to chase it to the ends of the earth. "Must we always have an ulterior motive?" The voice is quiet, but it is filled with curiosity and emotions Kaz doesn't have the ability to unpack. "Is it not good enough that I wanted to see you Kaz."

The Underboss of Ketterdam becomes a rain, becomes wind, and earth, and gold. He sits down on his desk, uninterested in the groan of the wood as it tries to carry his weight. Nikolai looks at him, soft and open, all that charm hidden- packed away for a moment far removed from this one. Somehow the distance has shrunk between them until there is only two steps, maybe three before their bodies can collide. He knows Nikolai would not come closer, but some part of him wants the king to try. Wants to see what would happen. He shoves that part so far down it got to hell before him.

"Say something," The blonde whispers.

"How long till they realize you've snuck off?" The bark of laughter that escapes the king is like jurda straight into his bloodstream.

"We have an hour tops."

"Let's go." He throws a new hood, midnight blue and embellished with golden thread, at him. It's his own. He doesn't have time to find another. Nikolai puts it on, fastening the small gold clasp at his front, and Kaz has to remind himself to breathe when he sees how beautiful those colours are against that golden skin. It looks a thousand times better on Nikolai than it ever had in him.

"Where are we off to then?" The blonde asks, his familiar charm steady through his features once more. "You're not intending to kidnap me and sell me to the highest bidder are you?" Before he can even start to ignore the question Nikolai is carrying on. "I have to tell you I won't make a very high bid. I seem to have botched myself a little when I turned into one of the Darkling's little pets. I think my di—"

"Shut up will you," He snaps, black eyes scanning the club as they walk through it.

"A little tense Mr Brekker," He can hear the grin. He doesn't know whether he wants to slap it or stare at it. He keeps walking.

They're outside and it's just started to drizzle and he has the brief thought that maybe he shouldn't be making the king of Ravka gallivant in the rain. But then he catches a glimpse of Nikolai's expression, full of wonder and glinting with excitement and he can't turn back even if he wants to.

"Kaz," Saints he loves the way the blonde says his name. "I really think it's better if I know where we're going, sake of safety and all that."

"We're going to the docks."

"You're not intending to drown me, are you?" There is no concern hidden behind the question, only delighted amusement.

"If I had intended to be rid of you Nikolai," Kaz turns his head, stares at the man, "I would have done it the second you walked into my club."

"Even though you didn't know it was me?"

It's his turn to smirk, and he revels in it. "I know everyone that comes into my club, King." The title reverberates in his throat. He catches the flash in the royal's eye.

"Why are you taking us to the docks?"

"I want to show you something, privateer." The strangled noise he hears in answer makes him force down the smile threatening to erupt.

The rain is at that awkward stage where it's more than a drizzle but less than a downpour. The kind that seeps into your clothes, makes your bones wet before you can even feel it on your skin. But they're almost there, he can see their destination clear in front of him. They are quiet, a rare thing for Nikolai he thinks, as they walk. Every now and then he glances to his companion who is always staring at the world in wonder. Like every corner produces a new kind of thrill. Like he'll be able to collect them all and bottle them for his journey home.

"Why are you staring at my pretty face?" The subject of his hidden amazement asks. "You've never been one to appreciate beauty Mr Brekker. If you did you'd have commented on my lovely violet wax seals at least once." He fights the urge to roll his eyes at that. The wax seals were the least interesting thing about the letters. He usually ripped them open like a mad man, clawing for the content inside and reading it as if it were going to disappear before he could get to the, 'fondly, Nikolai Lantsov' at the end.

"I have more interest in the contents inside."

At that the King does roll his eyes, "Oh yes, the ever so interesting reports about dock lookouts and safe grisha arrivals."

"It's my business."

"Mhm" Is all the blonde has to say.

They step onto the docks, and the tap of his cane, louder, more prominent on the wood, rings slightly in his ears. It's a comforting sound. One he has come to rely on to keep him steady. Especially when there's a king walking in stride with him, a king who kind of looks like the sun just before it disappears over the horizon. A king who scents his letters with lavender because he wants people to know calmness. A king who has never touched him but always stands close enough that he can feel the heat of him.

He recognizes the marker that tells him they're in the right place and then he motions for Nikolai to stay behind him. "Its small so we'll have to be close together." He says quietly.

"Are you okay with that?" The question is so gentle, so full of worry it almost buckles his knees.

"I'll manage."

"Kaz," He sounds hesitant, he sounds worried. "You don't have to force yourself to do something for me."

"I'm not, now come on before it disappears." And then they're stepping into an alcove only slightly bigger than a coffin and they're so close and there's so little air. But still Nikolai is not touching him and the leather of Kaz's gloves is warm against his skin. There is no part if him exposed to the elements, except his face. He takes one breath, takes two. The king is looking at him with concern, it is swimming in his features.

"Look up." Together they tilt their heads, and as the weak sunlight, bogged by rain, sinks to the floor the gems buried in the stones of the roof above them come ablaze. Crimson reds, and sapphire blues, and forest greens, and golden yellows. The light fractures and morphs and dances around them, like coloured stars.

He had discovered this wonder in a burning rage, trailing blood down the docks. He'd beaten up a man who betrayed their gang- dirty work for the boss- but half way down the docks he'd thought he was being followed and he slipped into this little alcove. He comes back every chance he gets.

"This is—" For once King Nikolai Lantsov is speechless. "How did you even find such a thing?" The hood had fallen off his head when he looked up so every angle of his face is on sharp display. The miserable lighting only made him more golden as if he was defying the weather simply by existing. And the gemstones reflected in his eyes, turning them every shade of rare rainbow. One of three Kaz had ever seen in Ketterdam.

He just raises a brow. "We should be getting back, I'm sure they've already sounded the alarm."

The blonde snorts, "They're used to it by now."

"Oh you sneak off to visit all your friends?" They step out carefully, making sure not to disturb the structure or get caught in the act.

"Feeling less special?"

"Wondering if maybe you should pay your guards more."

They bicker all the way back, about everything, trading wit and meaningless insults in equal measure. Kaz insists on dropping Nikolai off at his lodgings and Nikolai insists he doesn't have to despite leading them towards the building he's staying in. When they finally arrive, it is with a sense of longing for more that settles between them. More time, more laughter, more traded quips, just more.

"Goodbye Mr Brekker." The King bows his head.

"Nikolai." He nods.

"Come visit me in Ravka soon." It's the line he prints in every letter, no matter how far apart their replies are, or how many other things they have going on. Kaz never acknowledges it. He won't put that kind of hope into them. He must stay here. He must work.

But today, with happiness bubbling under his skin, he cant help but let loose a small smile and a dangerous promise. "I'll try."

And fading under the bustle of people is a small golden plaque on the floor of the alcove. "To those we love, and love unconditionally." A bigger promise, one that has lasted through time itself.

"That's all we can do Kaz," Nikolai smiles. "We try."

DuckTales 2017 - “Beaks in the Shell!”

We go virtual!

The episode begins with GizmoDuck and Huey chasing after Gandra Dee, who just stole a cube that causes shockwaves. While he does end up grabbing the massive short circuit-causing cube before it drops into Duckburg's water, Gandra Dee ends up getting away in the end. He wasn't really too competent in this quest, either, as he got caught in a trap and he had to be told by Huey that he can fly out of them. Huey's like someone who yells at the TV when a plot hole happens. Whether this failure is because GizmoDuck is still not as competent as he wants to be or something else is not too obvious, but anyone who watched the previous major Gandra Dee episode can guess that something would have affected his crime fighting when it comes to Gandra Dee.

Back in Gyro Gearloose's lab, Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera has another project in the works that is a secret from everyone: a new virtual reality cloud space that is both a space for scientific collaboration and a potential romantic destination. Let's just say that it may as well have been that something else, and that something else is hidden from everyone else, including his own M'Ma, about as well as his secret identity. Not that he was going to tell his special someone that they didn't buy it.

We go into the aforementioned virtual reality cloud space, where Gandra Dee is already generating beakers full of green chemicals, the universal sign of science in children's cartoons. They can also kiss under the happy little pixelated trees, because they are still an item despite Gandra Dee's record of blinding children and threatening to short-circuit all of Duckburg. Fenton is almost ready to share this scientific breakthrough to the world, but Dee doesn't want to do that because she thinks people would shut it down because of all the purple glitches. This plot point made me wonder if there was going to be something more than just "oh, Gyro can fix those", like if they were going to be a major part of the plot, or that it was supposed to represent that this romance is not going to last.

We later learn that this cloud is also important because they can do dangerous experiments without worry of injury, and, combined with their ability to generate anything they can imagine, this could be a good set-up to an interesting creativity vs. creativity battle. Maybe the purple glitches will come to life as monsters, or maybe FOWL will find out what's going on here and invade it with their own creativity. I mean, who else would have the idea to invade this Gizmotopia?

Fenton: (putting his arms around his one true love) This is going to be...

Mark Beaks: ...the greatest scientific achievement in his-zizz-tory!

Oh, it's Mark Beaks advertising a new Waddle phone update that partially fixes a bug that makes the phones explode into flames. Granted, there's no hint that there's going to be any convergence between these two plots besides Beaks coincidentally finishing Fenton's sentence, with an extra "zizz", but, really, it's inevitable.

Now, Waddle only has one investor, and the investor tells the CEO that he has to come up with an original idea, which he simply can't do as every idea he can come up with, like coffee cups with apps, was already taken. This isn't really the episode's B-plot, and, as said before, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that he's just going to give up and attempt to steal whatever Gyro or his intern are doing. One other thing that's a bit confusing is that nobody seems to recognize Mark Beaks anymore despite being the CEO of a company that apparently still makes phones a lot of people use. It could work as another sign that his company is going down, and that's why he seems so desperate here.

Meanwhile, Huey ends up barging into Fenton's office with a new discovery about Gandra Dee that could lead to her capture, only to see Fenton doing a kissy face while wearing his GizmoDuck helmet. He puts two-and-two together and realizes this must be some sort of virtual reality cloud space. Fenton tries to get him away from that by saying that the GizmoDuck helmet only works on his head, and he just does not have any additional VR headsets for guests. Manny the Headless Horse makes his appearance in this episode with a bunch of VR headsets, apparently hearing that excuse as a request for those, and Huey comes into the world to marvel at all of its wonders, including that very special guest.

Gandra Dee: What...the...f...

Huey: FOWL?!

I see what they did there. Gandra has to generate a weighted blanket to calm Huey down after that revelation. At first, I was going to make some joke about how this is a really bad way for the Duke of Making A Mess to go out, but it makes sense. Stress will be one of the major parts of Huey's part of the plot, and weighted blankets are a good way to relieve that. It's also another reminder that this is a world where ideas can come to life, even if it's just a virtual one. I would question how a virtual weighted blanket would work, but this episode does seem to go with the "one's mind makes it real" scenario.

As Huey keeps asking questions on why Gandra Dee is working with Fenton, we get the little sad backstory on Gandra Dee courtesy of her generating a flashback of her losing a science fair to someone making that one volcano experiment. People just don't understand that she wants to push the boundaries of science with...okay, I'm not sure what that is supposed to be, but it does shoot a dangerous death ray. Because of her experiments need for danger, she can only do experiments on herself, which is why she happens to be a cyborg, and the only people who would fund her work happens to be people like the evil buzzard bent on world domination. She adds an additional comfort to Huey that she already plans to quit FOWL for good after using their resources to make this. After making puppy dog eyes at the little kid like a little kid makes puppy dog eyes at their parents, Huey accepts this for the sake of both science and love.

This leads into our actual B-plot: Huey trying his hardest to keep a secret, and his anxiousness and stress is really getting the best of him even in the beginning. One of the first people he has to confront is none other than Fenton's M'Ma, who, despite Fenton's words to Gandra Dee, did not buy that his project was not some sort of romantic exploit. This leads to an interrogation scene. Crackshell then shows up before M'Ma could actually interrogate him further, and Huey has to try to motion to him what exactly his lies were. It's the usual set up for plots like this, the guy gets caught up in the lie, and he tries desperately to keep the secret a secret. There's not a lot that I haven't seen before, but I can not say this is bad, either.

One creative thing they do end up doing is the very next scene where, after Huey "goes to the bathroom", Huey comes in a room with confidence to answer the big question on why Fenton would keep secrets from his own M'Ma. Eventually, he has to bail again after hearing that one of the secrets is that Fenton is GizmoDuck. Why? Because that was actually Louie playing the part of Huey, and somehow, the schemer of the three nephews is the last person in Duckburg to know GizmoDuck's secret identity. He tries to go back only for M'Ma to ask "Huey" about "Louie's Kids", that fake charity he had in The Other Bin, and Louie cracks under pressure and reveals Huey put him up to it. Huey runs to Fenton's house to essentially yell out that he can't take hiding this secret about the GizmoCloud anymore, thinking the only person in there is a still-in-the-GizmoCloud Fenton. He has no reason to believe there's any desperate CEOs hiding in the wastebasket.

We cut back and forth between this plot and the "Gandra Dee not wanting to open the GizmoCloud" plot, and it turns out to be more about her than anything else. We get the lines about how she doesn't want the world to think of her badly, and how he doesn't care what they think about her, and this heartfelt moment doesn't last too long. Mark Beaks may not be a creative man, but he at least knows how to hack into things. Honestly, it seems like this world didn't have that much security to begin with.

Mark Beaks shows up, locking them in a hashtag captcha before Gandra Dee can defeat him with the combined power of a Terry Bogard power wave and a Rolling Stones reference, and he decides he's going to use his new "WaddleCloud" to steal other people's ideas without anyone telling him. Fenton can still use his creativity powers, and he tries to do that to summon the GizmoDuck suit...only for Mark Beak's stealing powers to take it right from him, giving him the power suit and the ability to add Waddle logos to all the buildings in the skybox.

Fenton Crackshell can still use his creativity abilities to sneakily motion his hands to tap Morse code for help. By the way, yes, he is comatose. It's just like Sword Art Online or that one episode of Black Mirror. Also, how lucky that the one person taking a stress rest in the room, Huey, happened to know Morse code. He tries to take the VR headset out of Mark Beak's head, only for it to give him an electric shock, and the computer displays a little Mark Beaks head telling him that, "ah, ah, ah, you didn't say the magic word." I'm not going to give any hate on this episode for lazy references. If anything, this joke is perfectly fitting for Mark Beaks.

All of this convinces Huey that he doesn't need to keep the secret anymore, which pretty much ends the B-plot with him just randomly yelling out to a mail carrier about how Mark Beaks hacked into the GizmoCloud. He then says he's going to find people who can actually help. It's like he's aware what he did made no sense. Before GizmoDuck can use his finger lasers to delete Fenton and Gandra from the program, or whatever that would entail, his world is suddenly invaded by Huey, M'Ma, and Gyro. How did they manage to get in this hostile cloud takeover when it's implied Mark Beaks put Dennis Nedry-levels of security on it? Pineapples. Well, or Gyro helped them. Either way, it's not really explained.

It may seem like I didn't like this episode that much, so I'll say one thing I did like a lot besides the Louie scene: the weekly final fight scene all of that buildup led up to. The people all use their creativity in a pretty cool way here that I won't entirely spoil here. I also like how Mark Beaks' lack of creativity fits into what he does in it; he just combines everyone else's ideas into a super robot form. I was expecting him to fall over due to so many conflicting ideas, but they end up doing something else that was also pretty funny. Funny by Mark Beaks standards, anyway.

It's not much of a spoiler to say that the good guys win, but there is a little bit more to the ending. Namely, there is a major cliffhanger at the end of the episode. While it's a good cliffhanger, It does feel a little disappointing that a character that was built up in this episode essentially becomes a mere damsel in distress. Then again, I felt the same way about Lena in The Other Bin before the big revelation about her in The Shadow War. We'll just have to see what happens.

How does it stack up?

There's some good scenes here and there, like the blanket, the Louie scene, and the final fight scene, but with everything else, I just found it mediocre by DuckTales 2017's high standards. I'd put it below New Gods On The Block, which has a fight scene similar to this one, and I didn't really love that one either. I can see people disagreeing with this one, especially if they were really into Gandra Dee or Mark Beaks, and I'm sure the last minute of the episode is going to lead to somewhere fascinating. I really debated on whether or not this should be the first two Scrooges episode of Season 3, and I originally gave this a 2 just because I didn't think it was as great as everyone else thought it was. However, I then thought about some of the episode I would give a 2, and I think the good scenes in this episode are just too good to give the whole package a two.

Long story short, Three Scrooges.

Next, we meet some friends for life, through thick or thin, with plenty of tales to spin.

How To Get Started with Adobe Things Beginners Want to Know How To Do

hello and welcome to Adobe XD and the

things that beginners want to know how

to do so my name is Terry white and I'm

the worldwide design and photography

evangelist for Adobe it's my pleasure to

walk you through this amazing best ecommerce development company bhubaneswar

application so with that said let's dive

right in so I've got Adobe XD running so

by the way Adobe XD stands for

experience design it's for UI user

interface and UX user experience

designers it's a prototyping tool that's

really what it's all about so I've got

XD open of course it shows my recent

files what you're going to get to that

in a minute

but it also shows me some presets some

templates I can begin with so if I want

to begin on mobile I can choose the

various iOS and Android devices I want

to begin on tablets I can choose those

I'm building a prototype of a website I

get the most common sizes there and of

course if I want to make my own custom

size no problem just put it in so if

you're designing a UI or user experience

for some device or a new invention this

would be the place to start now before

we get going I just want to let you know

something that I've downloaded since the

UI on designs that I will do for the

most part will be for iOS devices

Apple's devices I did download the Apple

kit so they have one specifically for

Adobe XD we'll see that in a few minutes

and of course they've got one for Google

and Microsoft Windows and various

wireframes and more UI kits more more

more alright so with that said I'm just

gonna pop over and my current device is

an iPhone soon as I choose that as my

my template or preset it begins giving

me the first thing the first look at

Adobe XD so the first thing we see is

the artboard it's showing me an iPhone

size blank artboard and this would be

very similar to working with our boards

and illustrator and Photoshop which

we're gonna get to that soon - you also

have some basic drawing tools here now

this is not meant to replace illustrator

and of course you can draw an

illustrator if there's something

are complex that you want to draw and

copy and paste those in as vectors and

SVG or you can place them in using the

import command so this is just for the

things that you want to do quickly right

here while you're in XD but if you want

a better drawing experience that's what

other straight is for and just like if

you want better photo editing that's

what Photoshop is for you could bring

those elements in as well so we got the

standard panels over here I've got the

layers panel open I'm gonna close that

for now there's also an assets panel I'm

gonna close that for now because we're

gonna get to that in just a minute over

on the right hand side we've got the

contextual panel form basically like a

youtube

properties panel for making all your

adjustments then you've got all your

previewing and sharing options at the

top here so of course you've got the

basic menus including the export menu

for exporting your assets out we're

gonna get to that at the end and let's

go ahead and dive in and get started so

for example let's say I want it to have

a different background on my art board

so I can either a draw a background or

be simply select the background that's

already there the art board itself and

give it a different color so I can make

this any color I want or I can of course

draw a frame and put something in it now

you also have access to your art farm

sorry or cc libraries so if I bring up

my CC libraries I have access to all my

CC libraries if I want to bring in

something from Adobe stock I can bring

in various stock images like these kids

and just drop them right in and they

come right in link to that library of

course I can scale

look no Shift key it will scale

proportionally by default which is a

great thing and of course I can move

that around that image hasn't been

licensed yet but I can of course get it

and play with it and see what I want now

I also have the ability to work with

text so if I wanted to put some text on

the page that simply said learn I'm

gonna Center that so I do a few things

here we're gonna learn

Adobe XD and of course I can select that

text I can make it whatever color I want

some of the libraries out of the way get

to the fill color here so I want that to

be a lighter color and if I want that to

be a different font this shouldn't be

surprising this is kind of vector

editing so let me get to one of my

favorite saying serif fonts which is

ephra and of course it comes in

different styles so we're doing Ephrem

medium there and now what I want to do

is draw the element that I want to be my

icon so I've got my Dobie XD I can move

that around get that centered right on

the output artboard itself and now I'm

just going to go ahead and draw a basic

rectangle something we've been doing in

drawing programs since the beginning of

time and of course I've got the ability

just like an illustrator to make instant

rounded corners so this is great if

you're trying to make buttons or thing

or UI elements search boxes things like

that I could undo that and of course you

might say well wait where's the direct

selection tool how do I get to the

individual points or paths so I can do

it a couple ways I can double click on

the object that will drill down into it

I can also hold down my command key Mac

PC ctrl key to get to the options for

direct select as well so I'm just going

to grab those two points and pull them

up a little bit now sadly in this

version there is no there's no flip I'm

gonna flip that horizontally actually I

want to duplicate it first then flip it

horizontally so I'm gonna go ahead and

duplicate it same way I always do and I

hold down my option or Alt key and drag

it over and if I held down the shift key

in addition it would bring it over

perfectly straight now I'm gonna go

ahead and just flip it over manually

because I've made an equal distance it

will flip over nicely I can hold down my

shift key then and get that just the way

I want all right so we're beginning to

make our icon of a book I'm gonna grab

the pen tool one more time I'm just

gonna go ahead and come in here click

and click and down to the center there

and click and click one more time and

that is it for that object as well so

we'll go ahead and select that object

and we'll

give that object a fill of all right

here's a fill of white there we go

and same thing I need a duplicate of

that so I'm just going to hold down my

option key to start dragging it and

making the duplicate hold down my shift

key to keep it perfectly straight and

once I get it on the exact edge I'll

just flip it over and then of course

move it into place

and that becomes our book icon now I'm

gonna go ahead and select all these

pieces and then of course I get that

right in the center as well so now

together all of this is by learn XD icon

of course I can increase the point size

of that a bit let's go ahead and try it

point maybe not point how about

point that's better and let's select all

of that together so I'm just gonna go

ahead and drag select all of that and

I'm going to scale it down a bit just

scale the whole thing it's a little too

big and again we'll get it in the center

and one of the things that I want to

point out is that when I go to the

assets panel here I have the ability to

add colors to add character styles to

add symbols and these are great when you

want to reuse them we're gonna use them

a little bit later on I'm gonna go ahead

and click at this as a symbol now what's

a symbol and why does that matter I'm

going to close the libraries for now I'm

kind of done with it for this few

seconds and let's say I go ahead and add

some more artboards so I'll grab my

artboard tool I just click boom there's

another one artboard number two you can

you can name those too you don't have to

call them two three four and five

because that will be getting become

confusing so at any time if you want to

double click and change the name and say

maybe this that was the welcome screen

this is the search screen maybe so forth

and so on basically you're designing the

user interface for whatever comes next

so that's on page one or welcome or the

home screen whatever you want to call it

of the app we'll call it home and then

on page would be the search and I

would begin building out the search but

I want that same I want that same

element so let's go ahead and do a

couple things here we can make this a

the same fill color we can actually

the eyedropper and sample that get the

exact same color and by the way you also

I should have done it this way let's get

and get rid of this artboard let's get

rid of this artboard you also have

command D for duplicate control D on

Windows for duplicate that way I get the

exact same art for color and everything

I have to do that over and over now I'm

gonna go ahead and just go option drag

these books and let's say that I want to

put this on this page I want to put it

on this page or this artboard

and so forth and so on now of course

this is no different than duplicating

anything in any program you can just

drag and drop out hold on your option

key make your duplicates get them

anywhere you want but what if you need

it to update it when you're doing UI and

UX design you're often drawing buttons

that are replicated throughout the

entire user interface like the home

button or the start button or the search

button or the whatever button it is

especially on website you have the same

buttons on every page if you make a

change the last thing you want to have

to do is go duplicate all of that stuff

and resize it and get it everywhere you

want it to go again so what I can do

because this is a symbol it treats it as

a single object but if I double click on

it I can drill down into it and for

example let's say I change the color of

the right side of the book to be read

and as you can see it instantly

replicated that across all instances of

that symbol so you can use symbols for

things that you're going to repeat

throughout your UI UX design and easily

and quickly update them just by making a

change to the symbol itself and it will

replicate throughout now if you don't

want it to be a symbol don't make it a

symbol then that element won't change

ok so let's recap so far so of the

things what we're doing right now is

navigating the app we're also did number

which is creating artboards now part

of number is also the ability to

create a scrolling artboard so for

example if I were to double click on

this artboard the minute I pulled down

ask the original size that means that I

want this artboard to be longer because

on this screen of my app or my website

or whatever it is I'm designing the

content is more than one screen more

than one page more than one display so

just by making the artboard longer

you've automatically made it a scrolling

artboard and this is determining how

much will show on that screen before it

starts to you know fall off onto the

screen where they have to scroll so

that's easy to make a scrolling artboard

just extend the artboard that you need

to be able to scroll and you can just

start putting content past the scroll

line for example like that I just

duplicated this photo so they wouldn't

see that photo initially until they

scroll down okay so we've done number

three drawing importing images text you

can import images also from your library

or from the file menu so you can just go

to file and import number four we've

also talked about the assets panel and

the Styles panel we're getting through

this pretty quickly number five let's

talk about preview so there's a couple

ways to preview your application I'm

gonna bring up my iOS device here as

well but if you first of all you can go

to your window menu and just simply hit

preview and that will preview the

artboard you're on so in other words

that gave me the scrolling artboard that

I just saw there also if you let me go

back to that artboard just for a second

if you have a mobile device that

supports the Adobe XD app so I'm just

going to go to my Adobe folder here I'm

gonna scroll over and launch the Adobe

XD app now the Adobe XD app lets me see

my XD files one of two ways either XD

documents that i've saved to my Creative

Cloud folder I have a couple there that

show up in their Creative Cloud folder

even if they were buried inside of a

folder it found them and of course then

I have a live preview live preview

requires you to be plugged in in other

words when I bring up live preview that

shows me exactly what I'm working on in

XD at any given time

so if I were to click that or not clip

here I can scroll it on my phone

so just scrolling that artboard on my

phone shows it if I make any changes or

switch to a different artboard it shows

me that artboard live on my mobile

device so that is the live preview on

mobile if you just want to test things

and speaking of testing we're going to

get to the interactivity in just a few

minutes all right so with that said we

kind of quickly learn a lot of basics

right off the bat you can make

additional artboards your our ports can

by the way they don't have to be the

same size that we talked about before so

if you go the artboard tool you'll see

that you can bring in different

artboards of different sizes in the same

document they don't all have to be the

same screen size so maybe you're showing

how it would look on a phone how it

would look on a tablet how it would look

on the web if you needed to make that

type of UI and of course you can make

your own custom sizes as well so just

like illustrator can have multiple

artboards and Photoshop can have

multiple artboards of different sizes so

can Adobe XD alright so let's get to

number and before I can get to number

I've got to bring up another document

this document kind of cute it's basic we

haven't done a lot with it but we're

gonna bring up a document now that has a

little bit more going on so I've got an

open recent and I open up an app design

calcia and this is design designed by a

surge vassal as the person who created

all this and that's great I purposely

got rid of some of the content so I can

show you how you would rebuild it in

this app so I just hit the letter Z to

go to my zoom tool zoom into the app so

we can see it and it's very visually

rich nicely done lots of buttons lots of

icons we're gonna get to all of that in

just a second also you can see the

assets panel has quite a bit in it it's

got some colors in it it's got some

character styles in it and of course

it's got some great symbols in it as

well and of course if you want to do

your own drawing you can just like we

did before so if I go to my pin tool and

I say hey this needs a button on it

start the button right there I'm just

gonna make it a little slant everything

in this app is kind of designed in a

slant which is kind of cool that's good

and just again move this over I could

have drawn a rectangle and just resize

it that way as well now I can go ahead

and just fill that with whatever color I

want

let's click out of it to it again there

we go and we're gonna fill that with a

color and we also want to sometimes

things are hidden like we can't see it

because it may not be in the front so

let's bring it to the front so we can

see it oh it's there we just don't have

the fill ah I see the fill isn't checked

it's picking up a car I wasn't checking

it so that's a beginner mistake

oh here we go we've got our object

filled with our red color and let's make

sure we got the right red on that object

let's click it one more time great and

now I'm gonna go and grab my type tool

and I'm gonna go ahead and just click

here right in the center and I'm gonna

type the words sign up all right and

same thing I want that to be centered at

set of justification but I didn't starts

in it so let me move it over to the

center I think thankfully for smart guys

that makes it easy I can of course pick

the color that I want and this is what

makes the Styles great if I just wanted

to make the color a big existing font

great but he's already got some great

Styles here to make it consistent with

the look and feel of the rest of the app

so just click the ACM Pro extended

condensed white -point and that gives

me exactly what I need all right the

next thing as I noticed that the symbols

are sometimes hard to it's hard to see

depending on what's on the background

there these little plus signs or buttons

this is a symbol by the way and I can

tell it's a symbol by just scrolling it

and finding the symbol now I also have

the ability to right-click and say

highlight on canvas show me all the

instances of a particular thing that's

in my assets panel which is also great

to have now for example if I select this

and just change the color it replica

it's through out and of course let me

undo that let me drill down onto it and

change the color so I don't change the

color of the plus sign as well alright

so now we've got the colors in place

we've got our symbols in place we got

everything in place except number six

number six let's do number six I'm gonna

go ahead and bring up my creative cloud

libraries one more time because I I took

the time to draw a shape the way I

wanted it to look so that I wouldn't

have to spend the time getting the size

and everything just right here

so this is the shape I want it's just a

simple rectangle similar to these that

are on an angle now it's in my library

if I drag it over it'll stay linked I

want to drag it over unlinked so I'm

gonna hold down my option or Alt key

when I drag it over from a library that

brings it in as a vector object that is

not linked to the original so now I get

rid of the libraries panel for now and I

can double click on this and voila it is

there it's got its vector capabilities I

can manipulate this any way I want now I

also want to bring in some images so I

can import them in but sometimes it's

easier for me to find what I'm looking

for just with a simple drag-and-drop so

for example if I'm looking for a

particular image like this one or Cuba

like this one I can drag it over and as

long as the object highlights in blue

like that that means it's going to go

inside that object and mask it to that

object that's great

alright so we're gonna do a couple

things we're going to bring in a photo

we're gonna use one of our symbols let's

do that as well let's bring up the

assets panel and once I bring up the

assets panel here's a symbol that I want

I'm just going to go ahead and drop that

on that's where I want that and then

last but not least I'm gonna go ahead

and grab the type tool I'm gonna come

down here and kind of line it up with

that and we're go ahead and type the

word Cuba and this time I don't want it

to be hold on let's undo that this time

I don't want it to be

just about our Center just about I

wanted to be left just about there we go

Cuba there we go and the same thing if I

want that Cuba to be consistent with the

rest I believe that is this one to be

consistent with the other ones that are

over here so great we got our plan your

escape page kind of looking great it's

got the elements I want on it but just

like this one I want it to be multiple

times down the page now of course I can

duplicate all these and then replace

them but there's a much better feature

inside of Adobe XD number six it's

called repeat grid I'm gonna go ahead

and select that one select that one

select this one so I got all three

object selected and over here in my

properties panel I've got the ability to

just simply click repeat grid now you'll

notice that gives me a handle on the

right and it also gives me a handle on

the bottom and as I pull this down let

me keep pulling it down let's extend it

beyond the canvas here and just keep

going as long as I want that will give

me a repetition of all of those elements

and it repeats them I also don't want

that much space in between them I want

it just basically I want them touching

so I just pull up on a spacer and get

those touching just the way I want now

okay so what did that really save me

Kamandi or option drag it just saved me

from having a duplicate on one by one or

manually there's a little bit more to it

than that if I go back out and grab the

images I really need which is all of

these then what I can do is take all of

those images and drop them into the

repeat grid and boom it populates each

of the grid grid squares if you want to

call me even looking at square with

those images now all I'd have to do is

go in and change the individual things

that are different so for example maybe

this one's Mexico I don't remember maybe

this one's we scroll down maybe this one

is USA or let's spell it out you know

States and the next one is whatever also

I noticed something else there was a

change there was a request let's zoom in

on this one symbol and we want to swap

this guy out with a different guy and

he's in my library so once again I go in

to show my Creative Cloud libraries and

this guy is the one that needs to be

replaced so I just drag him right in to

that same spot and boom it keeps the

same shape fills it in nicely and that

has replicated throughout the entire

design so everywhere oh not yet actually

it hasn't replicated through the entire

design because I haven't done this

I haven't right clicked on it and said

update all symbols now it's replicated

throughout the entire design so if I

were to zoom in on this one over here

it's got the new guy so that is the cool

part about working with symbols when you

need to make a change that you need to

replicate throughout the document you

can do it easily

okay now we've gotten to the most

important part what separates this from

doing this inside Photoshop or

illustrator because at this point

probably saying well I already know

Photoshop Illustrator I already know how

to do our quirks I can do all this in

Photoshop in Illustrator maybe not for

repeat grid maybe not symbols as easily

maybe not

scrolling artboards maybe not previewing

on your device but let's say you could

draw it all you can create it all what

separates Adobe XD in a big way from

Photoshop and illustrator is the

prototyping so for example you notice

that we were in design mode the entire

time we were working in design mode up

here next to it is prototype and

prototype lets you do your wiring

basically wiring things together where

they should go so for example what

happens when someone clicks sign up well

you knows now when I click sign up

there's this little pull whip from it so

I can pull the whip over to this

artboard

and from this artboard it goes to home

empty when the person clicks on

and I can of course choose whether or

not what kind of transition is gonna

have dissolve slide left slide right so

forth and so on so lift for example

let's do a slide left all right so now

that we've got that you can also and now

most of these are already wired up to

where they go but I noticed that the

back buttons on some of these have not

been wired up so for example for this

one this back button this should go if I

just click on it I can choose the

artboard it should go to home back to

home empty same thing here this one

should go to save trip so I can either

wire it myself or just choose it from

the menu this one should go to chat so I

can just drag it over and now it goes to

chat so any way that you want to wire

your buttons up you can do that and you

can make it like a hidden button it will

always take the person home or a real

button that always takes the person home

it is totally up to you so wiring is

just that easy you decide basically the

interaction that will happen when people

walk through your design all right so

I'm going to close the assets panel for

now just get it out of our way and okay

well we already know we can preview on

the phone we can also preview here in

the app so I can say preview and now I

can click my sign up cool I can click my

plus sign sweet I can go to next I'm

going back now oh yeah that works great

okay so preview in here is great but one

of the other things that you can do and

in preview there's a record button so if

app you can click record and now you

even get a little icon showing people or

a little indicator showing people where

you're clicking and that will make a

movie of you walking through the app

it's showing people what happens when

they click where of course at any given

time you can stop that will allow you to

save your video as a movie for

out to your hard drive and then you can

share that movie file speaking of

sharing let's let's go ahead and we

might need to save this let's save this

out as our work in progress let's call

this our whip work in progress we'll

save this one out and now when I go to

share I can publish a prototype which XD

has always been able to do what's in

beta is program publishing the design

specs so when I say publish the design

specs and create a public link what that

will do is generate basically an

overview of the entire app the specs for

it so that if I was giving this to an

app designer and I needed to give them

the overall look or giving it to my

client and need to show them the overall

look they would be able to do it so now

it's uploading this as well and

uploading the x images so that it will

work on high DPI devices it also is

hosting this as part of your Creative

Cloud account you'll get a link that you

can copy and bring that up in a browser

so people can so you can see what it

looks like

alright so let's let's go ahead and open

the link I'll bring up my browser and

show it to me and this is what the

design spec looks like so again it just

gives them that view of the overall

project of what the project is looking

like what you should be able to do is

even some instructions on how to

manipulate it now let's go back to XD

because while the design specs are

basically in beta let me close that one

more time the big thing is giving

someone the ability to actually walk

through the app without you having to

send them a movie without you having to

do it for them or having them at your

computer so they're going to share one

more time I've also got the ability to

publish a prototype and so I can allow

for comments I can open it fullscreen

I can show the hot spot pink or hints

and brand new I can even require a

password so if I wanted to make sure

that no one sees this without the

password I can require a password too so

that's also a fairly new feature

so let's go ahead and publish this out

again it's going to build it all this

time it's building it not just as an

overview but it's actually building the

walkthrough experience as an html web

page so they will be able to click their

way through your app just like I did a

few minutes ago when I recorded it and I

was showing it here on my local computer

and for example I can open up those UI

elements and it opens it up as an XD

file so anything that you need you can

copy and paste right out of here so you

zoom in so that you're not having to

build all this stuff from scratch so if

needed the battery indicator if you

needed a home screen this is all here

designed in an XD format that is usable

so you can click on any of this you

could drill down on to it you can edit

it you can change any part of it you

want copy and paste it into your design

I just wanted to show that before I

forgot all right but that's not the big

one the big one is this let me pop back

to my operating system one more time and

let me let's just go back out of this

one more time and now let's go into I've

got a folder here called prism site

design and this is a photoshop file so

this was done years ago is done in

in photoshop and it was designed to mock

up a website and that's great but in

photoshop as you know it would be static

it's just images there's nothing I can

do with it there's no interactivity

there's no prototyping there's no

showing someone what this looks like and

up until recently if I wonder have them

see this as an X T file and I have to

rebuild it from scratch that all just

went away I can right-click on this now

and I can say open with Adobe XD when I

say open with Adobe XD it will take my

Photoshop file all those artboards and

convert them into an XD project so if

you do prefer to do all your work in

Photoshop but then you want to take

advantage of XD and do all your wiring

and do that

anything else and edit and finisher

edits here you can now go on to

prototype mode and yep got it

go to prototype mode let me zoom out a

bit and I could now start wiring this

stuff together just even though this is

like a one-page site but I can start

hiring this stuff together just like I

would for any other app or any other

website that I designed from scratch so

that is it that is Adobe XD things

that beginners want to know how to do

and I know I kind of went through a lot

of things some things kind of quickly

but that's the beauty of the web is you

can re-watch this and you can slow it

down you can do it step by step and

follow along so Adobe XD is awesome for

prototyping for building this content

and showing people the idea before you

invest the time the actual coding of

your apps or coding of your websites and

building it up and then of course once

you're here you can always export this

stuff out to actually be used as part of

the final design so with that said

It feels like it's been a king's age since we first began our long journey to rewrite and revamp the Beginner's Guide to SEO. For all the long months of writing and rewriting, of agonizing over details and deleting/replacing sections every so often as Google threw us for a loop, it's hard to believe it's finally ready to share:

What makes this new version so darn special and sparkly, anyway?

I'm glad you asked! Our design team would breathe a sigh of relief and tell you it's because this baby is on-brand and ready to rock your eyeballs to next Tuesday with its use of fancy, scalable SVGs and accessible fonts and images complete with embedded text and alt text descriptions. Our team of SEO experts would blot the sweat from their collective brow and tell you it's because we've retooled and completely updated all our recommendations to ensure we're giving fledgling learners the most accurate push out of the digital marketing nest that we can. Our developers would tell you it's because it lives on a brand-spankin'-new CMS and they no longer have to glare silently at my thirteenth Slack message of the day asking them to fix the misplaced period on the fourth paragraph from the top in Chapter 7.

All joking aside, every bit of the above is true, and each perspective pulls together a holistic answer: this version of the Beginner's Guide represents a new era for the number-one resource for learning SEO, one where we can update it at the drop of a Google algorithm-shaped hat, where it's easier than ever to access and learn for a greater variety of people, where you can rely on the fact that the information is solid, up-to-date, and molded to best fit the learning journey unique to SEO.

I notice the structure is a little different, what gives?

We can't escape your eagle eyes! We structured the new guide quite differently from the original. Everything is explained in our introduction, but here's the gist: taking inspiration from Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we built each chapter based on the core foundation of how one ought to go about doing SEO, covering the most integral needs first before leveling up to the next.

We affectionately call this "Mozlow's Hierarchy of Needs." Please forgive us.

A small but mighty team

While it may have taken us a full year and a half to get to this point, there was but a small team behind the effort. We owe a huge amount of gratitude to the following folks for balancing their other priorities with the needs of the new Beginner's Guide and putting their all into making this thing shine:

Britney Muller, our brilliant SEO scientist and the brains behind all the new content. Words cannot do justice to the hours she spent alone and after hours before a whiteboard, Post-Its and dry-erase notes making up the bones and muscles and soul of what would someday become this fully-fleshed-out guide. I can safely say that there is no way you would be exploring the brand-new Beginner's Guide in any coherent manner without his help. Backup Tumblr Blogs - 2017

There are a lot of methods here. I’ve used the wordpress method but with that you get EVERYTHING after days of waiting with not much control. The method that gives the most control (and is so far the fastest) is tumblr-utils by bbolli on github. It can be daunting for those who aren’t familiar with command line, however. They do have a Windows guide (tumblr_backup_for_beginners) which walks you through step by step on setting it up and getting it started.

Below is my version of the guide with some helpful tips not mentioned in the original guide. Under read more for length.

1. Install Python

Key step do NOT skip, even if you already have python you may be using an outdated version and it requires 2.6 or 2.7 to run.) If you are using Windows, download the x86 MSI installer (unless you KNOW you have a x64 system that can handle that version. If you’re unsure, stick with x86)..

You may need to check “Copy Python” when installing in Windows or step 4 will not work.

Note: there are downloads for Mac OS. I don’t have a Mac to test this on, but it should work just as well as on Windows.

2. Download tumblr-utils.zip

Extract it somewhere safe that you know will not accidentally delete it. Do NOT extract it to Desktop or Downloads as directed in the original guide, especially if you like to clean your download folder every now and then. I installed it on my D:/ drive but you can probably get away with putting it in your Documents somewhere. Just remember where you put it.

3. Set up the PATH variable (optional but recommended)

The reason we set up the PATH is to make it more convenient to run the backup code in command line. If the path isn’t set, you have to type in the full address to the script file every time you run it. With the path, all you need to do is specify the file itself and your computer will know where it’s at.

If you’re running this on a Mac, you don’t need to specify PATH (although you can) All you need to do is drop tumblr_backup.py into /usr/local/bin using Finder and it should do the same thing.

For Windows 10, use the taskbar search “environment” and click on “Edit the system environment variables”. Click on “Path” and click “Edit...” add a New variable and type in the path to wherever you extracted tumblr-utils.

Note: You can easily grab the url path from windows explorer by clicking on the address bar and copy/pasting.

If you’re not running Windows 8 or 10, there’s a guide here for getting to the PATH environment variable. For Windows 7 / Vista / XP, make sure you separate existing information in the PATH from your new address with a semicolon. (see the first window in the screenshot above).

4. Create Your Backup Folder

I would suggest making a new folder called “Tumblr Backups” on a separate drive from C (D, etc, or even better on a flashdrive or external), but feel free to put it somewhere you have easy access to or will remember well (such as in your My Document’s folder). Again you’ll want to remember the address to it and how to get there from windows explorer. You can always move or copy this folder somewhere else after you’ve backed it up.

5. Navigate to Tumblr Backups in Command Line

For the next step we need to use Command Prompt (or Terminal on Mac/Linux). To open up Command Prompt in Windows 10 you can simply hit the Windows button + X and then C for Command prompt or search for it via taskbar (Here is a guide for opening it on other Windows versions). On a Mac, you open Terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T. You shouldn’t need admin privileges for what you’re about to do. In fact, it’s probably better if you don’t.

When you open command prompt in Windows it will be set to C:\Users\[your username] (the same place Windows Explorer automatically opens to). We want to navigate to where you want to store your backup. If it’s in Documents, then type:

cd Documents/Tumblr Backups

hit enter and the prompt (the text in front of your cursor) will change to that directory. If you want to go up a folder type:

cd ../

If you set it up on a different drive in Windows, type the drive letter (capitalized), followed by a colon and hit enter and then change directory using cd

On a Mac, you also use the cd command to change directory in Terminal, but to change drives, all you need to do is type:

cd /Volumes/

The ls command (LS lowercase) lists all the files and folders within the directory you’ve currently navigated to. The /Volumes/ directory is where all your drives are located and you can navigate from there to your Tumblr Backups folder. NOTE use quotation marks around files/folders that have spaces!

cd ‘Tumblr Backups’

6. Run tumblr_backup.py

Once you’re in your Tumblr Backups directory, you’re ready to backup your posts!

If you want a complete backup of your blog as-is, type the following (replacing yourblog with the blog you want to backup) and hit enter:

tumblr_backup.py yourblog

It may take some time, but even for 18,000+ posts it should take no longer than 30 minutes depending on connection speed. On the next line it will give you a real-time update of how far it is to completing the backup. If it is interrupted, it will process what it’s pulled so far and generate a backup folder anyway. Note that you can backup multiple blogs at the same time by adding more than one blog name at the end, separated by spaces.

Don’t worry about pulling posts twice or accidentally doing the same command. It won’t add any duplicates.

This also works for side blogs and for backing up blogs run by others that you wish to keep in case it gets purged or leaves Tumblr.

If you only want your own content:

tumblr_backup.py --no-reblog yourblog

--no-reblog (that’s two dashes in front) tells it to only backup posts that you’ve made yourself, including reblogs where you’ve added new content.

If you’re only interested in backing up photo posts:

tumblr_backup.py -T photo yourblog

-T photo tells the script to only backup photo posts. Make sure to capitalize the T!

If you only want to backup posts with specific tags:

tumblr_backup.py -t tag1,another_tag_with_spaces yourblog

Separate each tag with a comma. Tags with spaces use underscores instead. Make sure the -t is lowercase!

If you have an unstable internet connection, break it up into multiple requests.

tumblr_backup.py -n 100 yourblog

tumblr_backup.py -n 100 -s 100 yourblog

tumblr_backup.py -n 100 -s 200 yourblog

-n 100 tells it to only count 100 posts, starting from the last post you made. -s 100 tells it to skip the first 100 posts or checks (which are the last posts you made).

You can find many more flag filters in the documentation that can help you fine tune your backup depending on what you want to keep and how you want the backup to be displayed. You can also get information on these options by running tumblr_backup.py --help (with two dashes).

If you are getting image missing errors, don’t worry. It’s usually just avatar images of deleted blogs that are no longer accessible.

If you get 503 messages and aren’t pulling posts, it could be you’re requesting too frequently and the server locked you out. I’ve had that happen with my stats project while testing. In that case you just have to walk away for a bit and wait it out Double-check that you spelled the blog name you want to pull from right and maybe try again in a couple hours or so.

7. Profit

If you look into Tumblr Backups afterwards, you should find a folder with your blog name. In it is a website hierarchy with each post in the posts folder modified by the originally posted date with all of your tags included. Images are in media, monthly archives in archive, and there is an index.html that allows you to navigate and view everything via your favorite browser.

If you want to use a custom CSS file, call it custom.css, put it in the backup folder and do a complete backup. This forces the pages to all use the new styling.

The CSS of your blog’s original theme css and avatar is always saved in theme/style.css.. Note that it does not save any javascript you may have had on your theme and you should back that up separately. This also does NOT backup pages.
