Let the Passover Book Roundup begin! For most families, the Passover seders - the two ritual feasts that mark the beginning of this hugely significant holiday -are going to be a lot quieter than usual this year. Normally a time when extended families gather by the tens and dozens, tables pushed together to make room for more aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., this year people will be very different, with celebrations limited to the immediate family with whom we are isolating. However, that doesn't mean that we can't make these celebrations joyous and fun! If anything it's more important than ever to get creative! That's why the first book I'm sharing for the holiday is Tilda Balsley's "Let My People Go!" (2008), illustrated by Ilene Richard. A perfect addition to any family's seder, this short, silly, rhyming tale of the Jews' exodus from Egypt (aka The Passover Story, whose recounting is the cornerstone of the seder), it's even divided up and colour-coded to be performed as reader's theatre!! The Nysmith School: 2nd Grade - Reader's Theatre Workshop

Week Nine

I have chosen this Reader’s Theatre video by 2nd graders at a school in the US. Readers Theatre is a fun way for students to improve in their communication skills, helps with connecting to a book or the chosen text, can assist with student’s who might struggle reading and offers students the chance to show off their acting skills and let loose for a few minutes. 

I would use this as a mentor text before starting with our first Readers Theatre session. This can show the students how they can join as a group and create a lively version of a play using a book their group is assigned. It can also teach students about timing, voice projection and assist them with working in teams.

Readers Theater: Episode 1

Well, would ya look at that. It's the first blog and I'm already a day behind. Imagine that...

Now, onto the real meat and potatoes here. What is Readers Theater? Why is it not Reader's Theatre? What the hell am I reading in this class?

Readers Theater is a kind of theatrical performance where actors do not need to memorize lines. They do not wear costumes (normally). They do not have sets (typically). They do not use props (all of the time). It's about your voice and telling a story with that voice. It's a collection of artists putting together a story without confining themselves to the physical limitations of a stage. This type of theater is meant to  evoke image in the mind of the listener that otherwise couldn't be portrayed. For instance, yesterday, I was an elephant king.

We took part in a slightly modified version of Readers Theater in class yesterday. Rather we took part in a hastily thrown together cluster of madness that is sort of what RT (I'm tired of typing it out, give me a break!) has become. I had paper ears and an imagined crown. We used an elephant sound I found on the internet through my phone. We needed the moon to shake as though it were a reflection in the water, so we projected a picture of the moon onto the screen and shook the screen. It worked out pretty neatly actually.

You see, RT now is this sort of performance where things get pulled in from multiple media to make a cohesive story. Sort of. Right?
