Zoe's first World Book Day costume is... Herself, as featured in "Adopting a Little Brother or Sister" by... Us! 🤣 The big sister character in this story was strongly based on Zoe, and she illustrated the book, so it's very close to our hearts 🥰 . #worldbookday2023 #wbd #worldbookday #socialworkmonth #socialworkmonth2023 #socialworker #adoption #fostering #fostercare #kinshipcare #specialguardianship #therapeuticparenting #bookstagram #childrensbooks #inclusivebooks #booksbooksbooks #adoptionresources #fostercareresources #kinshipcareresources https://www.instagram.com/p/CpSw_rqM3Bi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is a book I cannot wait to order for the library! One of the best middle grade realistic fiction books I've read all year, and written by an athlete - author-activist who shares many of the identities of his protagonist! Obie Chang lives for swimming, but he's just been kicked off his team. Not because of his skills, which are formidable, but because his bigoted coach can't deal with his courage in coming out as trans. But he is determined to be himself, competing as the boy he is even though he would have won higher awards on a girl's team, and even in the face of bigotry and cruel bullying from a former best friend. Thankfully, he is wholeheartedly accepted by his loving Korean-American family, his new friends on a new team, and, excitingly, his first crush, but navigating the complexity of middle school life is a lot for any kid. Facing all the awkwardness and confusion and uncertainty of those times, Obie struggles with self - doubt, but with the support of loved ones, humor, and his own growing confidence as a writer, he finds his voice and his self-assurance. There are so many things right with this book - it deals with some tough topics but is genuinely fun and hopeful, often funny, and shows Obie in all his multi-faceted intersectionality and complex humanity. He's never a poster child for anything or an expression of Resilience, he's just himself - and in being that, becomes such a loveable character that you can't help but cheer for. I loved so many of the ancillary characters too - his writing teacher, his halmoni, and brother were some of my favorites - and this was such realistic realistic - fiction, you could almost smell the chlorine-infused excitement of the swim meets and taste the homey vibe of the local sandwich shop. This book is awesome representation and awesome literature - it is going to become one of my most recommended for fans of realistic fic, sports books, friendship drama stories, and just generally compelling novels. #obieismanenough #ownvoices #schuylerbailar #sportsfiction #diversekidsbooks #childrensliterature #childrensbookstagram #librariansofinstagram #schoollibrarian #representationmatters #lgbtqbooks #inclusivebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CVrSzvHs-pj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Let the Passover Book Roundup begin! For most families, the Passover seders - the two ritual feasts that mark the beginning of this hugely significant holiday -are going to be a lot quieter than usual this year. Normally a time when extended families gather by the tens and dozens, tables pushed together to make room for more aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., this year people will be very different, with celebrations limited to the immediate family with whom we are isolating. However, that doesn't mean that we can't make these celebrations joyous and fun! If anything it's more important than ever to get creative! That's why the first book I'm sharing for the holiday is Tilda Balsley's "Let My People Go!" (2008), illustrated by Ilene Richard. A perfect addition to any family's seder, this short, silly, rhyming tale of the Jews' exodus from Egypt (aka The Passover Story, whose recounting is the cornerstone of the seder), it's even divided up and colour-coded to be performed as reader's theatre!! So grab yourself a copy online (link in bio!) and enjoy the silliness with your kids of performing your laughing hearts out at the seder table this year. A guaranteed mood booster for all! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #JewishNoodlenuts #noodlenutspassover #letmypeoplego #tildabalsley #ilenerichard #passover #pesach #passoverseder #seder #readerstheater #readerstheatre #exodus #exodusfromegypt #moses #jewishkids #jewishfamilies #inclusionmatters #inclusivebooks #jewishholiday #stayhome https://www.instagram.com/p/B-FlODZHPPT/?igshid=thresb1mjwbs

I love this photo from @anovelescape! There's a giveaway going on right now through the 21st for a signed, personalized AMERICAN PANDA paperback + swag (which includes origami turtles 🐢!!)! Go to this photo on @anovelescape's account for details!! #Repost @anovelescape (@get_repost) ・・・ ❓Was/is your high school racially diverse? . Mine was not - it was over 90% Caucasian. So the synopsis for #OurWaywardFate hit me hard: Ali Chu is the only Asian girl at school until a new kid shows up — and he’s Taiwanese, like her! (See full synopsis in comments.) . Granted, I wasn’t the only Chinese/Taiwanese (my mom’s from Taiwan) girl in my school (my best friend, two grades above me, was one of the others). But I know what it’s like to stand out that way. And I love that @gloriacchao is writing that experience into contemporary YA. 🖤🖤 . ALSO, there are interwoven snippets of a 19th century Chinese folktale retelling interspersed with the narrative? I AM READY! 🙌 . Today, I’m partnering with @gloriacchao for an amazing giveaway of her previous book, #AmericanPanda! . GIVEAWAY Enter to win a signed, personalized paperback copy of American Panda + swag! . I LOVE Kwame Alexander, AND his book The Crossover won the Coretta Scott King Award AND the Newberry, so why hadn't I read it til now? Because I am not a sports fan. But it only took three pages into this amazing verse novel for me to realize - you don't have to be. Sure, someone with knowledge of basketball would be able to appreciate that aspect more deeply than I can, but even with no more familiarity with it than the term slam dunk (which wow, this book is one), I was struck by the way Alexander brings the confidence, excitement and depth of the sport into every line, lyricism bouncing from hip hop to haiku, verse style varying with the tone of each moment, a constant crossover. Is it strange to compare it to Hamilton? They're similar in their keen, brilliant wordplay and playing with language, seeming effortless in the performance but on a second and hundredth look there's so much work that goes into it, so much mastery of the forms they're working with. Like basketball, I guess - you watch the game, but sometimes don't realize the hours of practice that are what made this moment shine. Josh is a character that goes straight to the heart, his joys and excitement and pride and worry and anger and conflict and wondering and caring are so real and clear in every line. His family is close and beautiful. The story is captivating, framed by sport and about it but so much more, too, relationships and family and conflict and love and estrangement and redemption. I just wish I had read this sooner! Here is a gorgeous review by Coretta Scott King winner Ashley Bryan: "Kwame Alexander's cadenced basketball novel is a gem of poise and grace. His players come alive with the precision and control of an orchestrated musical composition. The poetry of the telling rings through to the heart. The Crossover  crosses over as a gift to all ages."  —Ashley Bryan, Two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner  #basketball #versenovel #diversekidlit #diversechildrensliterature #kwamealexander #Hamilton #inclusivebooks #brilliant #breathtaking #blacklivesmatter #blackcharacters #blackcharactersrock #corettascottking #Newberry https://www.instagram.com/p/CBCKnPaHSmb/?igshid=1hnkjyh4qbs76
