Everyone needs a good backpack, not only for school but for everyday life. I always have to have a mini bag for my essentials.  I have never been one to use a purse, so when mini backpacks became trendy I couldn’t have been happier.  To me, a purse doesn’t even compare to having a backpack, you’re completely hands free without anything inhibiting you.  I try to carry as little as possible; my phone, a charger, my I.D., my debit card, a water bottle and a book, so a small bag is perfect for me.  Durability in a backpack is the most important aspect in choosing a bag.  I would rather pay a bit more for a backpack and have it last a for a substantial period of time instead of buying a cheap one and having it just fall apart immediately.  When I purchase a new bag I have the intention of using it everyday and not having to worry about being careful with it, often after a long day I’ll just throw it in a corner on the floor.  Exceptional quality, is also very important when choosing a school bag because you’ll be using it everyday to carry heavy books.  In the past I’ve had a backpack break after only a few months of using it for school, which is why I am so picky with the bags I buy now.  My two favorite brands for backpacks right now are Herschel and Fjällräven, both companies make bags that fit my simple yet important criteria: be made to last and have a cool versatile look. For everyday, I’m obsessed with the Herschel Supply Co. Nova Small Backpack and the Fjällräven Re-Kånken Mini Backpack.
I love how both these bags are small enough to take everywhere but spacious enough to fit all the basics.  The Herschel Supply backpack is the perfect pink; it’s different than a basic black but is still a soft enough color to be paired with almost anything.  The Kånken mini is very structured, an innovative design seen infrequently in backpacks.  Fjällräven backpacks look better with age, making it one of the best backpack brands!  Both these brands also carry an array of standard sized backpacks, which are great for school, traveling or just daily life if you need something bigger than a mini bag.  I gravitate toward basic items that can be used all the time without clashing with my outfits, thats why my go to standard sized bag is the Fjällräven Foldsack No.1 Backpack in Deep Blue.
Tumblr media
Again durability is so important, which is why both these brands are so perfect, you don’t have to sacrifice quality for a great look.  I could go on forever about my love for backpacks, there are so many here at Queen of Hearts & Modern Love to choose from, be sure to check us out online or in store for all your backpack related needs!
XXX,
Your friends at Queen of Hearts & Modern Love!
Backpacks, Backpacks, Backpacks! Everyone needs a good backpack, not only for school but for everyday life. I always have to have a mini bag for my essentials.

Did you know? This bag is made from recycled materials!
Designed with the environment in mind, this sized-down version of the classic Kånken backpack is fashioned from recycled plastic bottles and spin-dyed to use minimal water, energy and chemicals.
So cool right! I loved mine that I had. I pretty much destroyed it...

College School Supplies + Zero Waste Alternatives
I use my laptop to take notes in 90% of my classes but there are some debates on whether the energy use to power electronics is really more eco friendly than using recycled products and then recycling them again at the end of their lives. So if possible, I'll provide many options so you can choose the best for you and your lifestyle. Keep in mind that it is always best to use items you already have, someone you know is thinking of throwing away, or that you find at a thrift store. It's always best to reuse something than it is to buy something new. Also the links are just to give an idea of how the products look like but I'm sure you can find them in other places + local stores.
Backpack
Use an old one. If it's not your style anymore, how about dying it or adding patches or something?
If it's not salvageable, maybe one a friend/family member doesn't need anymore?
Thrift Shop
If you must buy one:
A cotton or hemp one
Fjällräven Re-Kånken (made entirely from polyester recycled from plastic bottles)
Patagonia Ironwood Backpack (body made of 100% recycled polyester + made with fair labor practices)
laptop + charger
dry erase board
DIY one from old picture frames
Markers:
Pilot Board Master (91% recycled plastic + refillable)
Pilot Whytebord (56% recycled + bottled ink refillable)
Planner
Use a digital one
Make a bullet journal with a recycled notebook
Use a refillable planner where each year you would just have to buy the inserts which are easily recyclable
I can't seem to find one but if you happen to find one that uses recycled paper then that's good
Pencil bag
Make one yourself. Use old clothes (your own or thrifted) as fabric!
Post-it notes
Try going digital for to do list and stuff
Post-It Greener Notes (67% plant-based adhesive + 100% recycled paper) - different sizes/colors, however it's only the "Greener Notes" ones. The other "eco friendly ones by them is only 30% recycled paper
Printer, + paper + ink
If you're debating taking a printer and don't already have a printer I recommend printing on campus or sharing one with roommates. The only times you really use it is to print essays/assignments and depending on your major this might not be too often.
Paper:
Printworks 20lb Paper (100% recycled paper)
AmazonBasics 20lbs Paper (100% recycled paper)
Hammerhill 20lbs Paper (100% recycled paper)
Eco Paper Sugar Cane Paper (made from sugar cane)
Ink (Refill / Recycle):
Try refilling ink cartridges at places like Costco, Walgreens, Office Max, etc.
However, they can only really be refilled a few times, after that, recycle the cartridges at Office Depot, Staples, etc.
Some Tips
Flash cards
Digital flashcard apps. There's Quizlet. And I also like Anki which is free for Mac, Windows, Andriod but $25 for iOS :(
Flashcard alternative - use a folded piece of paper
AmazonBasics - use as a last resort, only 10% recycled paper
Binder / folders
Recycled Paper Folders - such as the EarthWise by Oxford (100% post-consumer fiber)
Wooden Binders
Usb drive
A metal or wood one is best
Or a plastic one if you already have one or someone gave it to you
Notebook (Recycle / Compost)
OneNote (free for most college students) is a great app that works on all platforms. I love that it lets you separate notes into folders and subjects. Google Docs is another great alt. Or just whatever writing app your device comes with.
DIY Recycled Notebook // Decomposition Book (100% post-consumer recycled paper)
Onyx and Green 5 Subject Notebook (made with sugar cane paper)
Filler Paper (Recycle / Compost)
Ampad Filler Paper (100% recycled paper)
Ecology Filler Paper (100% recycled paper)
Or make your own paper!
Pens
Fountain pens (preferrable metal) are best since you can refill them with ink. If you can't find/afford a metal one, try finding a plastic one made from recycled plastic such as the Pilot Kakuno Fountain Pen (85% recycled plastic)
Ballpoint Pens:
Onyx and Green Retractable Ballpoint Pen (bamboo body, corn plastic, product and packaging  95% biodegradable)
Pilot Petball Ballpoint Pen (90.4% recycled material)
Felt Pens:
Pentel Sign Pens (80% recycled plastic) *only the black, red, blue, and green pens!!
Pilot Super Petit Marker (83.5% recycled plastic)
Gel Pen:
Pentel EnerGel-X (84% recycled plastic)
Pencils
Wooden pencils that come in cardboard
Some are also made with recycled content such as Onyx and Green Pencils (made from recycled newpaper)
Recycled Mechanical Pencils
Onyx and Green Mechanical Pencils (bamboo body, corn plastic, product and packaging  95% biodegradable)
BIC Ecolutions Xtra-Life Mechanical Pencils (65% recycled plastic)
Erasers
Any that come in cardboard packaging. If you can, recycled rubber is best.
Highlighers
I use Notability to input all my pdf readings and highlight them there. Saves so much paper and ink! For the non-pdf readings I use CamScanner to scan the pages and make them into a pdf that way I don't have to make copies. I heard GoodNotes is also good and similar to Notability
Wooden Highlighters - compost the stub. Any brand.
Liquid Highlighters:
Zebra Optex 1 EZ (98% recycled plastic + refillable)
Pilot Spotliter 2 (89% recycled plastic + refillable)
Markers / Colored Pencils
I use to use these to make my study guides pop. I don't use them as much since I use apps like OneNote and Notability to take notes.
Markers:
Zebra Mackee Care Double-Sided Markers (83% recycled plastic + refillable)
Colored Pencils:
Any that come in cardboard or metal packaging

Fjallraven Kanken bags are everywhere for good reason. Durable, chic, and lay-flat zip-open design makes these perfect for your day pack! This Re-kånken model (available in other colors too) is made from plastic waterbottles! Feel good about that.

11 questions tag game
Thanks to one of my good internet friends @skiesandjournals for the tag!
RULES: answer these 11 questions, create 11 questions of your own, and tag 11 people!
1. what type of music do you prefer?
ALOT. I’m currently obsessed over alt rock stuff. On the other hand, I love EDM and any (not mainstream) pop that has some electronic vibes to it.
2. what’s your favorite subject?
tbh it would be Mandarin lol
3. mention something from your wishlist!
i wish that i could... go to an EDM concert?
4. do you like black or white erasers better?
Black tbh because in white ones, you can see the dirt.
5. what’s your favorite thing you have on your room?
All my stationery huehue
6. is you school bag usually heavy?
Yeah sort of. I use a normal size Re-Kånken.
7. do you prefer gel pens or ballpoints?
Gel pens all the way. But what’s annoying is that they smear alot and it makes my highlighters dirty :(
8. how long before a test do you usually study?
3-2 days
9. is your handwriting big, small, or regular-sized?
I think it’s regular sized.
10. what grade are you currently in?
ten.
11. what’s your favorite school supply?
Everything! hahahhahah
Ok so here are 11 questions i created and let’s see if you can answer them!
1. Notebooks or binders? Why?
2. Ever been to a Japanese stationery shop?
3. How committed are you with your planner/bujo?
4. Do you like old songs? If yes, what are they?
5. Do you think your crush likes you back?
6. What do you think is the hardest subject ever?
7. What’s your favorite food?
8. Would you rather spend your money on a plethora of stationery or a Kanken?
9. If you could bring back one band that has been disbanded, which one would it be?
10. Favorite superhero movie?
11. Favorite Disney movie?
I’m gonna tag (sorry it’s not 11 people!!) @bumblebeestudy @sherlockian-studies @peachymilknotes @nanastudy @studying-papers

Fjallraven Re-Kånken Backpack Slate
A special edition of Kånken, made entirely from polyester recycled from eleven plastic bottles. Dyed with SpinDye technology that radically reduces the amount of water, energy and chemicals used. An everyday companion with the same genius design as the original, but now reinvented from a recycling/recyclable perspective that saves natural resources. Ready to be carried, travelled with and loved – and in the far and distant future, recycled again. The main compartment has a large zippered opening that makes it easy to pack and unpack. It comes with a seat pad that is stored in the inside back packet where it stops the contents of the backpack pressing against the back – and is always at hand when a pause is needed. There are also two flat side pockets and a zippered pocket on the front, perfect for small items you want to keep close at hand. The carrying system is simple but functional with handles at the top and flexible, adjustable shoulder straps. Embroidered logo. Address tag inside the main compartment.

Hi! I saw your Kånken photo, it’s probably been a while but how are you finding it? I want to get one but I’d love to know your opinion
I have three of them (three sizes :P) (I spend my money in wise ways clearly) and I love all three of them v v much. They are definitively my favourite bags, and while I want to re-pimp them a little with pins and keychains and charms, they are still some of my most used bags, especially the Classic one, that I now own in black
I use them a little less recently since I travel less by train, so I have used my Big less than the two others.
But !!
They are the comfiest backpack I own. I have back problems, and get back pains super easily, and I get pains only at the end of a long day with the Kanken, vs generally in the middle of the day with any other backpack. They are really good for my back and the way the weight goes onto the back really makes them less painful for me, which is amazing.
Also, they are really roomy, and I have put way too much stuff in them while travelling, or when going to work =///= but for a work day, my classic generally holds my stuff with room to spare (which is good bc I work at a library and generally end up borrowing books)
so, between the ideas of the company (v oriented toward recycling, ecology, green and fair fashion and all) and the qualities of the backpack, they are very very much worth the money asked for them. And they are super good.
