You've been alive for as long as you can remember, longer even than the 4 great nations.

Your past was fuzzy at best, were you born? Did you have a family? You can vaguely remember them sometimes.

For all you know, you might be a spirit of sorts, but spirits don't bleed do they? Maybe you drank from a fountain of youth? Maybe even cursed for a sin you've committed

It doesn't matter, you've been wandering the world your whole life searching for purpose.

Living for that long of a time changed you greatly. Somedays you envied other people for being able to grow old and die, it turned you jaded and indifferent to everything.

You've been many things, a painter, a cook, a tailor, a criminal, a poet and currently a mabeast hunter.

By chance, you stumbled upon Echidna's tomb and was invited to a tea party.

Echidna was intrigued to no end by you. You had knowledge so ancient that it isn't even recorded. Not to mention she might even learn how to become immortal from you.

You hated her at first, for her amorality, callousness and uncaring nature. Sure you were quite similar, but you tried not to interfere with the lives of mortals.

One day, to save a village threatened by the Great Rabbit, you made a contract with her. You didn’t really care about the villagers, but the money was worth it, Echidna couldn’t really harm you and you thought that maybe she could bring some intrigue into your life.

You thought it through and made sure that you can pull out from the contract anytime you want.

In your spare time, she would call you to tea parties and wanted you to impart knowledge to her no matter how trivial.

She was surprised by a lot of things you taught her, some of them don't line up with historical records but you remember them as clear as day.

You never expected her to change. You saw her through the front that she puts up but eventually over decades, depending on each other created a mutual respect which blossomed into care.

She doesn't fully change of course, but she comes to understand that she fears losing you.

Eventually she comes to care more about you than the possibility of being immortal. You care for her too since you’ve never interacted with someone frequently this long and you both start to regain your humanity through each other.

You'll figure out a way to resurrect her and give her a corporeal form to start your journey together from zero.

Roswaal is gonna be super pissed but what can he do against you?

Re:.zero and the Masonry

It's interesting to see the masonics references that Re:zero has most notedly in the Witch Cult. The Witch Cult is an organization that allegedly worships the witch of envy. It was co-founded by Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti. Allongside another unnamed individual. I wonder if Roswaal was not a Grand Master of the Witch Cult.

The Witch Cult has existed for over 400 years their purpose is rumoured to be the resurrection of the witch of envy. They're always seen wearing jet clerical robes with triangular hoods which have two red cut- outs for the eyes and a large symbol resembling an eye, located on their forhead. Are you gonna add the rest of the Isekai Quartet to the crossover? If so, I'm curious about what would happen if Subaru died, then Byleth Divine Pulsed it. Would he still be resurrected by the Witch to his last save point or would he be brought back by Byleth's Divine Pulse? Would there be two Subaru's in two different timelines, one where he goes back with Return by Death and one with Divine Pulse?

I won’t, mainly due to me not having watched RE:ZERO or finishing Tanya the Evil.

I love this moment from Re:Zero. In case you haven’t watched the show, the protagonist approaches the Sin Archbishop of Sloth, the leader of the cult that aims to resurrect a fearsome witch. The scene gives off an eerie feeling.

If Subaru is actually leaving behind the worlds he physically dies in, that means he's also leaving behind countless versions of his allies to mourn and suffer without him.

This flips the entirety of Re:Zero on its end and gives the meaning of “Starting Life in a New World” an entirely different context. Righteously upset, Subaru asks why he was shown these awful visions and bluntly Echidna tells him that they may actually exist in, well, another world. Echidna steps in before that can happen, however, and Subaru is thrust into her Tea Party. Using a power called “Faceless Bride,” Lust appears as whatever her target desires the most - and also forces the person to forget to breathe, suffocating them. Lucky for him, the illusion is shattered and the Witch of Lust appears in her stead. She offers to console him and the battered Subaru obliges before realizing that she couldn't possibly be there. When he begs for it to stop, Rem appears. When Subaru wakes again, he's subjected to a montage of worlds in which he died either by his own hand or by others'. The Dragon Sword is said to only work at its full power for worthy opponents, meaning Puck was truly ready to total the world. As Reinhardt lifts his Dragon Sword, Puck is completely destroyed. Just as the confrontation escalates towards brutal battle, Puck coldly tells Reinhardt that he'll only ever be a hero. Puck, who had previously promised to destroy the world should anything happen to Emilia, is in his savage-beast form when he is confronted by Reinhardt. When he awakes, Subaru is thrust yet again into an alternate reality where his death has a serious effect on those who care for him - until he reaches one where Puck, standing in a frozen wasteland, is ready to destroy the world. Again the voice echoes through the chamber and Subaru returns to another post-Return by Death reality where he'd been murdered, leaving behind his mourning allies. The vision is the first time Subaru witnesses the aftermath of Return by Death, a glimpse into an alternate world presented by a mysterious voice telling him to behold the unthinkable. Suddenly a vision of a dead Subaru appears, his limp body bleeding out beside the presumably dead Rem as Emilia and Felis attempt to resurrect him, to no avail. RELATED: Re:Zero: Subaru Learns the Hard Way Wish Fulfillment NEVER Ends Well As he enters the temple wherein the Trials take place, Subaru asks again to be invited to Echidna's tea party only to be rendered unconscious. Behind her smile, the Witch embodies her namesake entirely as she offers Subaru a rather one-sided proposition following a disturbing revelation regarding Return by Death.Īfter a bit of exposition where Subaru recounts his experience with Roswaal - namely, that the patriarch of the house is aware of Return by Death and is exploiting it for some unknown goal - he does the only logical thing by returning to the Sanctuary to consult Echidna. The mysterious Witch of Greed Echidna has finally given Subaru some context for all of her weird machinations, though perhaps he would have been better off not knowing.
