Reading started brightly enough, moving the ball around nicely from back to front and this controlled football kept Bolton (in green shirts) at bay for the first 5-10 mins, at least. Once into the game, Wanderers peppered Reading's goal 3 or 4 times in a strong 15 minute spell, utilising their quick passing across midfield, then adding some sharp shooting from middle distances, usually fired in with some sting. However, at HT it remained 0-0 with 2 minutes of additional time played.

Referee, Backhouse, who had a reasonably good game up to that point started to flounder 2nd half, especially over deciding what was a genuine injury. Too late in the game some yellows were issued.

However, the away team's delaying tactics came back to bite them with only a minute of normal time remaining, needlessly handling in the box.

Cool as you like, and despite the encroachment (both teams), Knibbs slotted home the winner, and then Reading comfortably saw out the remaining 5 minutes of additional time, almost making it two in a scramble at the near post immediately after the penalty.

Bolton had more goal chances in the second period, even hitting the crossbar from a Sheehan free-kick, whilst Reading's best opportunity before the goal was seeing Bolton almost conspire to score an own goal.

New "Trotters" manager, Schumacher, will be scratching his head as to why Bolton didn't make the most of their plentiful chances in front of goal, as well as pondering why a few promising attacking moves broke down because a final pass fell short.

Adeboyejo tried his level best to keep bhis team's attacking vibe going, including making a wonderful solo run down the middle / wing demonstrating both strength & skill - so was unfortunate perhaps to be subbed for all his efforts. RMT members are to vote on a pay deal that could halt the union’s current wave of industrial action against train companies.

Operators have put forward an offer that proposes backdated pay rises for staff and job security guarantees.

RMT boss Mick Lynch said he supported the deal, calling it a “welcome development”.

However, further negotiations will be required to thrash out proposed reforms to the railways.

A separate dispute with train drivers in the Aslef union also remains ongoing, so walkouts over Christmas could still be possible.

The RMT’s dispute with rail companies has been going on for nearly 18 months already, with workers calling for better job security, pay and conditions.

Last month members voted for a new six-month strike mandate, meaning the threat of action over Christmas and into spring.

After talks between the union and the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents operators, a so-called memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been developed which sets out a mutually-agreed way forward.

The BBC understands the MOU involves a backdated pay rise for 2022 of 5%, or £1,750, and job security guarantees such as no compulsory redundancies until the end of 2024.

A second year’s pay rise would still depend on reforms being negotiated at local level.

The Rail Delivery Group, which represents operators, said: “If accepted, this MOU will terminate the national dispute mandate, creating a pause and respite from industrial action over the Christmas period and into spring next year, while allowing for these important negotiations on proposed reforms to take place.”

RMT members will now vote on the deal in an online referendum which closes on 30 November. It is the first deal they have voted on since the start of the dispute.

The Department for Transport called the deal “fair and reasonable” and said it marked “a positive step towards resolving this dispute”.

RMT members, including guards and ticket office staff, who work at 14 train companies have taken part in a series of national strikes since June 2022 in the long-running dispute.

Coinciding with walkouts by train drivers, the strikes have brought much of the rail network to a standstill and disrupted major sporting events and music festivals.

A separate RMT dispute with Network Rail – which manages the UK’s rail infrastructure – was resolved in March this year after signallers and maintenance workers voted to accept an offer.

Noel gave Reading their first Christmas present under his tenure, as The Royals rewarded a modest Boxing Day crowd with a 4-1 fairy-tale win, with the "man in the iron mask" Eaves scoring a consolation goal for the Cobblers.

It was also Noel Hunt's birthday, but take away four very well-taken goals - Knibbs (5'), Smith (28'), Savage (75') & Camara (87') - the match was mostly pretty tedious to watch in the depressing weather.

Grey was the day and grey, bar two goals, was Reading's first half performance, although it had its moments with Smith and Mbengue in particular; the No.27 finding his range with long distance, cross-field passes and a mazy run, with the 1-2 on the edge of the Northampton box, almost coming off.

Reading's overall attacking game improved 2nd half and both halves Bindon marshalled Royal's defence in a neat and tidy way and Kanu displayed energy and endeavour across the green park.

There was more evidence of a tactical plan than against Blackpool (the last game @ SCLS) but the hoops still seemed slow to push out from defence, inviting away pressure on the ball.

Northampton had their moments (more so the start of the first half) but never really threated the Reading goal again until far too late, and so left the ground after pulling only one goal back, which was Kevin Nolan's first match in charge of Town.

Nolan has a big task on his hands fighting relegation, whilst Hunt has finally shown fans he can get a win in charge to stay in the play-off positions, his first Noel, and with improving player discipline (no cards today for his side).
