#RawChefYin visits Mianto in Taipei! I was planning to just have fruit for lunch but then decided since I'm already here in Taipei I might as well check out the vegan places here. It was between Soul R Vegan and Mianto and since Mianto was only a 6-minute walk away, I ended up here. Was also initially planning to just have a simple meal but then I ended up ordering the set meal instead which had an appetiser, main, juice, dessert and since it's their birthday, free non-alcoholic champagne! I had: - corn soup - Thai "Mi" Curry - raspberry juice (this was not freshly squeezed) - passionfruit ice cream And they gave me a complimentary vegan chocolate because I checked in on Facebook. I really liked the chocolate! I went early just after they opened so I could choose a table - that was a smart move as I got to sit right next at the window. #RawChefYin visits O' Bean Vegetarian Restaurant. Went to cut my hair to get it all ready for next week's VELICIOUS with Raw Chef Yin shoot (www.rawchefyin.com/videos) so was really this vegetarian place. And I saw on Happy Cow that Raphael Dane had posted loads of photos of the vegan food there so I decided to check it out. Unfortunately today is their last day of operations in PJ. Word has it that the founder has passed away and so they're closing a lot of the outlets... I heard the franchises in some of the Singapore outlets are still open though. We had the following (all vegan): 💚Pepper Dry Ramen with mee sua noodles. Asked for spicy level 100% which wasn't that spicy for us. Hehehe. We love our chilli! RM11.90 💚Braised Rice - we asked for no mock meat and to have more vegetables instead. This was pretty nice. RM12.90 💚Chilli Dumpling - I'm currently on a dumpling obsession after such good dumplings in Taipei. This version..hmm....the dumpling skin was way too thick for my liking. RM9.90 I liked how everything was clearly marked vegan and you also can tell them to omit eggs from their vegetarian dishes. Staff were friendly and courteous. #RawChefYin visits Miss Green in Taipei! This was an unplanned visit... our main reason to head to the Xinyi Anhe MRT station area was to meet with Vincent Tsai of Vincent's Accordion Studio. When I told him I was vegan, he very graciously agreed to have lunch at Miss Green which happened to be 5 minutes walk away from his studio. I got to meet Vivian who is the brainchild behind Miss Green! When I told her I wanted something with more raw veggies, she recommended the GreenPower Protein Salad. This has organic quinoa, avocado, vegan cheese and lots of raw greens. Yay!!! NTD380 for a big portion, NTD290 for a small bowl. We also tried the Mexican Vegan Chilli which has organic housemade vegan chilli with seasonal vegetables. Extremely flavoursome. I'd definitely have it again when I visit Taipei next year. NTD300. Raw Vegan Lu Rou Fan INGREDIENTS 1 jicama, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 cup activated walnuts 2 organic white button mushrooms, small dice 2 organic swiss brown mushrooms, small dice 1 organic portobello mushroom, small dice 2 shallots, sliced 1 tablespoon organic soy sauce from @tais_choice_kitchen, delivered by @everleafstoremalaysia 2 teaspoons shaoxing wine 1 tablespoon Masarang Arenga Forest Sugar (palm sugar) from @straitswholefoods ½ teaspoon five-spice powder To Garnish Coriander Red chilli METHOD 1️⃣Process jicama into rice-size pieces in a food processor. If preferred, place in nut milk bag and squeeze out liquid.Set aside. 2️⃣Process walnuts in a food processor until it turns into powder. Pour into mixing bowl. 3️⃣Add mushrooms, shallots, shaoxing wine, soy sauce, palm sugar and five-spice powder into mixing bowl with walnut powder and mix till combined. This is your raw vegan “braised pork”. 4️⃣Place jicama rice into a bowl and spoon the "braised pork" on top. 5️⃣Garnish with coriander and chilli. ------------ Lu Rou Fan or Braised Pork over Rice is a classic Taiwanese comfort food and it's also extremely popular over here in Malaysia. Happiness is... having vegan Japanese noodles in Taipei at Hoshina Udon/Senbei. From what I read online, this is a vegetarian restaurant and the menu will clearly mark if there's egg or dairy used. When we asked the servers about all the dishes they offered, they confirmed it's vegan. We had: 1️⃣Curry Udon 195 NTD I forgot to take a pix!! This is a curry soup stewed with several seasonal vegetables and cashew nuts for a long period of time, offering a refreshing mouthfeel with aromatic taste. 2️⃣Buckwheat Noodles Set 425 NTD Choice Hokkaido buckwheat, freshly made daily. Tempura. Appetiser. Dessert was mung bean kernel and barley stewed with crystal sugar 3️⃣Handmade Morioka Senbei 50 NTD They called it a popular must-order dish. Silly me, I thought it was a pancake, didn't realise until later that Senbei is a cracker. The menu states: Inherited the crisp and solid sensation from the ancient store, offering a type of tenderness of time with the aromatic fruit fragrances. My favourite was the Curry Udon! I liked the cold buckwheat noodles too although I felt the tempura was a bit too oily. The senbei was a bit too hard for me, haha. #RawChefYin learns from Nantes Feng! I initially was thinking we should go to Shifen or Beitou but then I thought, hey, why don't I take a cooking class on vegan Taiwanese food. I googled and found 3 places that offered it but 2 were already full and then @vegan_dandan suggested that I check out www.facebook.com/joyfulflavor/ on her friend's recommendation and so I did. I decided to go with Mr Nantes Fung as he's vegan, as compared to the other classes where the chef is not vegan. This is what we covered: 1. Onion sauce 2. Spiced dried tofu 3. Tempeh dish 4. Pumpkin seed tofu 5. Sticky rice dumpling It was such a joy to be taking the class! Nantes explained the process very clearly and I liked how calm and encouraging he was. The class was conducted in Mandarin and Pyo helped to translate. Thanks Pyo! It was mainly a demo session with hands-on activity towards the end where I needed to wrap my own dumplings. Thank you Nantes, his assistant, Pyo for a wonderful time yesterday. Thanks also to Darice for the excellent recommendation. I'd highly recommend his class if you're in Taipei. Mine was a one-on-one class but he also has group classes.
