2024’s list is ready to go! See slide 2 for the year 5 “Best Of” list, slide 3 for guidelines, and slide 4 for info on RCDB day on May 30th. There were a couple tweaks to the guidelines, so please be sure to take a look.
Everything starts on May 1st. Be sure to use the tag #coastermaynia and #coastermaynia2024 so others can find your work and tag @coastermaynia to be shared! Feel free to work ahead, but posts will not be featured until each coaster's day.
Thank you again for all of your suggestions! The use of the form made putting the list together much quicker and easier! Looks like this year’s unintentional theme is “space”. 😄

how do you do this anyway? like how do you know all these coasters?
autism.
ok but seriously, heres a breakdown of my method: i rly am that autistic about coasters that a lot i just instantly recognize on sight, or at the very least have a pretty good idea of what it is- i'll look and go 'oh, is that x?' and then i just need to double check by looking up pictures to compare. rcdb is a great resource that i use all the time.
even if i dont recognize it right away, theres a lot i can do to narrow it down. first i look at the track. every rollercoaster manufacturer has a distinct style of track, and its a pretty basic skill when youre into rollercoasters to be able to tell, say, an arrow from a b&m from an intamin from the track alone. ill start looking through coasters by that manufacturer, keeping an eye out for any with the same color track and supports. sometimes a coaster's coloring is unique and i find it through that alone! if nothing else that narrows it down a lot for me. a train isnt always visible in the picture/video/whatever else, but if there is one i can use that to pin it down. if not, ill start comparing elements i can see to pictures of possible candidates and even the surroundings of the coaster if i must.
its a lot of effort, but i love rollercoasters and find it very satisfying! theres only been one time ive never been able to identify a coaster:

this gif. a friend of mine sent me this once a year or two ago and i spent hours that day trying to figure out what coaster this was. i still dont know what it is and it haunts me. if anyone can provide any information that aids in the identification of this rollercoaster, you will be rewarded(with my eternal gratitude).

Not a psyké specific post, just something I found cool,, the earliest page for Psyké (turbine in this case) on rcdb
The page is from 2009, when the coaster was SBNO.
Interesting detail, the fact about siroccos opening is not on the modern Psyké page. Guess it’s not really debated anymore

Fun Spot Kissimmee, Fun Spot Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Trip Report 3/16/24
This was such a stupid trip. Four parks and an 18-hour roundtrip drive in two and a half days, let's go!!!!
Coaster Rankings
Tumblr media
1) Iron Gwazi (x 2 night rides)
This isn't a new credit for me, so I probably shouldn't include it in the rankings, but I never want to shut up about it, so here I go. This whole trip was inspired by how badly I wanted to get back on this ride, and it did not disappoint. The absolutely terrible ops and the stupidly long wait times were 100% worth it just for two transcendent, otherworldly, ridiculous night rides in row 11 and 12. It has the best RMC drop by far. It crushes you with positive Gs in the valleys. The outerbank is psychotic, similar to ArieForce One and Steel Vengeance in the pure power and crazy duration of the ejector airtime. The death roll is the greatest inversion ever created, like the Twisted Timbers and Storm Chaser drops on steroids, with how you are already flying before going into it -- the whip is truly nuts. The wave turn is one of the most powerful ejector airtime moments on any coaster. The stall is pure fun. Then the ride continues to deliver airtime pops, followed by a massive drop right at the end that causes the train to pick up speed again and absolutely slam into the brakes. It is so aggressive at night. It was absolutely RIPPING. I don't even know what to say. It's the best steel coaster I've ever ridden. It's a perfect ride.
Tumblr media
2) Mine Blower (x 4 rides)
I LOVE this ride. It is pure chaos. The drop is one of the best I've experienced on a coaster of this size, giving shockingly good, strong, borderline ejector airtime. The corkscrew is a great element, and the novelty of an inversion on what was originally a traditional wooden coaster is always going to be cool. But the rest of the layout is fantastic, with several more strong airtime moments, including the double down after the corkscrew and all the hills going under the ride structure. This coaster also has excellent pacing and is filled with aggressive transitions and tight turns. The fact that it only reaches a max speed of 49 mph is amazing to me, because it is so aggressive and maintains its speed so well. My first rides are coming after the partial RMC 208 retrack, and I will say, the ride is still significantly rougher than most other wooden coasters I've done. The transitions between the new steel track and the old wood track are violent, especially going into the corkscrew and into the double down. But that roughness, along with the screaming of the wheels on the 208 track, just makes the ride even more chaotic and hilarious to me. With a full Gravity Group retrack instead of the RMC steel track, this would be a truly elite coaster. It's a shame.
Tumblr media
3) White Lightning (x 4 rides)
This ride proves that stats don't define a family coaster vs. a thrill coaster. This is clear when you compare White Lightning to Invadr at BGW. I was shocked to look on RCDB and see that White Lightning has a slightly smaller drop and a slightly slower max speed than Invadr. I would never have even compared them in my mind otherwise. White Lightning's layout and profiling put it in the same conversation as some of the larger GCIs. It has a nice, twisting drop, as well as fantastic pacing, maintaining speed throughout the whole ride. The second hill of the double up is the most sustained airtime moment on any GCI I've done, giving at least 2 seconds of floater. The return run continues to deliver the negatives, as each of the small hills gives solid floater. It's amazing how smooth this ride is still running, being four years older than Mine Blower. I didn't even notice the Titan Track, because almost the whole ride is smooth (with the exception of a little spot on the turnaround). To conclude, this is an awesome ride that blew my expectations away. I just wanted to keep riding over and over.
Tumblr media
4) Hurricane (x 1 ride)
This ride is way more fun than it should be. With the larger height, faster speed, and longer track length, this one surpasses the Atlanta one by a good bit. I really like the janky laterals on the turns, and the series of small hills at the end gives some abrupt, awkward airtime. Hilarious ride.
Tumblr media
5) Galaxy Spin (x 1 ride)
This park is full of hilarious rides. I've always found Zamperla spinning wild mouse coasters funny, and this is no exception. It doesn't have the crazy laterals of a Mack wild mouse, but the spinning is kind of fun.
Trip Details
This was such a stupid trip. Four parks and an 18-hour roundtrip drive in two and a half days. We left home after I got off work at like 8:00 PM on Friday evening, drove almost five hours to a hotel in Darien, GA, then made the last four hours of the drive the next morning to Fun Spot Kissimmee. We got there at about 2:00 PM and stayed until about 4:00 PM. We got two rides on Mine Blower first, then we did Galaxy Spin. They had some sort of car show going on there, so we walked around to see the cars for a few minutes. It took us forever to find it, but we finally rode Hurricane next. Then I ended with two more solo rides on Mine Blower. After that, we drove to Fun Spot Orlando. We got there around 5:00 PM and only stayed until about 6:00 PM, because I was in a rush to get on Iron Gwazi. Freedom Flyer was closed, so I didn't get that credit. But we spent our hour getting four rides on White Lightning. I could see Velocicoaster and Hulk running from the queue of White Lightning, and that was torture, because I didn't have the time or money to get to Universal on this trip. Will I ever ride Velocicoaster?? Who knows?? Lol. Anyway, it was about 8:00 PM by the time we made it into BGT. So we had two hours on a Saturday night to try to get in as many rides as possible on Iron Gwazi. And with the absolutely abysmal ops causing a 55-60 minute wait, that turned out to be two rides. I'm just glad we got to do it more than once at all, with how these ops were running. The train was parked in the station for five minutes at a time on multiple occasions. I don't even know how that's possible. We didn't even get to do anything else at BGT. But it was sooooo worth it.

Was browsing rcdb and came across this photo on the page for that one kiddy coaster that used to be at Dollywood. I'm sorry, but why the fuck does he look like Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force?

This sunny park has more roller coasters than any in the world – for now
For the hard-core amusement park crowd, nothing satisfies like a good roller coaster. Long drops, high speed, lots of airtime and adrenaline rushes are what they crave. The only thing that can top a great roller coaster is a bunch of them in one place.
Impressive collections can be found in many parts of the world, but which park currently holds more roller coasters than any other?
You might think with good reason it would be in an burgeoning Asian market. But the distinction belongs to a park about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles that has been around for decades.
With a whopping 20 roller coasters, Six Flags Magic Mountain even rates a mention with Guinness World Records – helping the park justify its “Thrill Capital of the World” slogan. But park rivals at home and abroad are close behind on the coaster count.
Martin Lewison, an associate professor of business management at Farmingdale State College on Long Island, New York, is big on Magic Mountain’s collection. Known as “Professor Roller Coaster,” he’s ridden around 2,260 of them worldwide. So he knows his stuff.
“I think there are a lot of great rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain.” he told CNN Travel recently. The park “has definitely tried to be a cutting-edge leader and pushing the envelope in terms of what kinds of coasters it builds. And it has a really good eclectic mix of rides. … I would say that it ticks both boxes, doing well in quantity and quality.”
Tumblr media
Twisted Colossus is an old wooden roller coaster redone with a steel track. Lewison said it's "really extreme, really thrilling."Courtesy Six Flags Magic Mountain
There are currently 27 parks under the Six Flags umbrella. How did Magic Mountain beat out the others in the chain, much less other parks all over the world?
“For a number of years, there definitely was a tit-for-tat where each theme park tried to build one more coaster to get ahead of the other,” Lewison said. “But there are some other more fundamental reasons for why Six Flags Magic Mountain has so many roller coasters.”
Location, prosperity and weather all played roles, he said.
“A large theme park is more likely to thrive in an area that’s highly economically developed. Right? And if you’re talking about Southern California, you’re talking about probably one of the most prosperous regional economies in the world.”
Then there’s Southern California’s weather – warm and sunny most of the year. A longer season means more revenue, Lewison said. A park in more wintry climes simply can’t stay open as many days and finds it harder to compete.
Finally, rivalry with Disneyland, Knot’s Berry Farm and others have kept Magic Mountain and all the Southern California parks on their competitive toes for decades, he said.
The quantity competition is fierce. Cedar Point in Ohio sports 18 coasters, for instance. And a relative newcomer to the amusement park world is breathing on both their necks.
Enerylandia in Poland has 17 operational coasters with two more set to open in 2023 and another scheduled to open in 2024, according to the Roller Coaster DataBase (RCDB) in late April. And the park has only been open since 2014.
Meet all 20 coasters
Ready to ride? Strap in for quick looks all 20 coasters at Magic Mountain. The statistics on height, length, speed and year opened come from the RCDB. The thrill levels and descriptions come from Magic Mountain.
Apocalypse
Height: 95 feet. Length: 2,877 feet. Top speed: 50 mph. Opened: 2009. Thrill level: Moderate.
This sit-down, wooden coaster has a sci-fi wasteland theme and runs for three minutes.
BATMA
Height: 105 feet. Length: 2,700 feet. Top speed: 50 mph. Opened: 1994. Thrill level: Maximum.
This steel coaster with the Caped Crusader theme has five inversions, including a full 360-degree loop right off the first drop.
Canyon Blaster
Height: 16 feet. Length: Not given. Top speed: 10 mph. Opened: 1999. Thrill level: Mild.
This sit-down, steel coaster for families, which features some sharp turns, is currently closed for refurbishment.
Full Throttle
Height: 164 feet. Length: 2,200 feet. Top speed: 70 mph. Opened: 2013. Thrill level: Maximum.
This sit-down, steel coaster is a 90-second ride and accelerates straight out the station into a loop. It can handle around 800 riders in an hour.
Gold Rusher
Height: 70 feet. Length: 2,590 feet. Top speed: 35 mph. Opened: 1971. Thrill level: Moderate.
This runaway mine train coaster pays homage to California’s gold frenzy has been with the amusement park since opening day. (The park opened as Magic Mountain 1971 and was owned by Newhall Land and Farming Company; Six Flags took over in 1979.)
Lewison likes the classic mine-train rides and says this is a great one for the whole family. It’s a great coaster for kids making their first steps toward more daring coasters, he said.
“Over the years, they’ve gotten a bit rough, but they’re just so much fun. They’re fast, they’re twisty.”
Goliath
N The Ride
Height: 235 feet. Length: 4,500 feet. Top speed: 85 mph. Opened: 2000. Thrill level: Maximum.
Even though the height of this hypercoaster is 235 feet, it actually features a 255-foot drop thanks to an underground tunnel. This steel monster features moments of weightlessness and forces of 4.5 G’s. Lewison said it’s one of favorites.
“This kind of roller coaster has no inversions, so you don’t go upside down. But it has really big drops, lots of air time. A ride like Goliath is really exciting.”
Magic Flyer
Height: 10 feet. Length: 350 feet. Top speed: 10 mph. Opened: 1971. Thrill level: Mild.
This gentle coaster for the kids, which has seen various names and themes over the decades, has been with the park since the beginning.
No coaster is too small to pique Lewison’s interest – but the Magic Flyer remains evasive. “I’m still waiting to meet the person that I have to bribe to ride the children’s roller coaster known as Magic Flyer.”
New Revolution
Height: 113 feet. Length: 3,457 feet. Top speed: 55 mph. Opened: 1976. Thrill level: Maximum.
The New Revolution has some age on it now, but it still thrills with a 360˚ loop in the middle of the ride that was quite revolutionary for the time. The steel coaster got a big makeover in 2016.
“I also wouldn’t miss Revolution. It is the first steel looping roller coaster ever built in the world. And it was featured in the 1970s movie ‘Roller Coaster.’ … it’s still a lot of fun to ride.”
Ninja
Height: 60 feet. Length: 2,700 feet. Top speed: 55 mph. Opened: 1988. Thrill level: Moderate.
This suspended, swinging-seat steel coaster flies riders through trees and over parts of its Jet Stream water coaster.
Lewison said this coaster was made by the now-defunct Arrow Development and is “a piece of history” as about half of Arrow’s suspended coasters are gone now.
“It was the first coaster to hang from the track. … It’s such a great experience … and happens to be one of the more thrilling ones that are left.”
RIDDLER’S Revenge
Height: 156 feet. Length: 4,370 feet. Top speed: 65 mph. Opened: 1998. Thrill level: Maximum.
Another creation inspired by the menagerie of Gotham City, this steel coaster hold several superlatives for stand-up coasters: tallest, fastest and longest in the world.
Road Runner Express
Height: 28 feet. Length: 679 feet. Top speed: 22 mph. Opened: 2011. Thrill level: Mild.
This kid-friendly starter coaster has its riders outrunning Wile E. Coyote. The ride last less than a minute.

I have such a soft spot for bootleg roller coasters. Take for example, this dive machine by Golden Horse, located at Great Xingdong Tourist World
Tumblr media
Looks pretty normal at first glance, and you might even mistaken it for the real thing made by B&M. Until you look a little closer and realize...
Tumblr media
...the thing has two different track styles! One in B&M's classic I-box style, and another that's cylinder-spined!
Tumblr media
The trains also have 4 rows instead of the characteristic 3 that B&M dive coasters have.
Tumblr media
And as if it couldn't get any more strange, it also has a giant shark at the bottom of the first drop.
Truly an enigma of a ride. According to RCDB, it's currently standing but not operating, with it's last operating year being in 2019, so it's unknown if it's ever going to start operations again anytime soon. Still, it's one of my favourite examples of bootleg coasters because I think it's such a bizarre and unique ride!
