Jake takes a sip from his beer, leaning up against the counter at Shaw’s. It’s bustling, full of loud chatter and music, as the bar usually is on a Friday night. After a long week of solving cases, the squad had decided to all go for a drink to round up the week. 

Jake’s gaze sweeps over the bar, and he frowns slightly as he notices you standing a little further down the bar. You’ve got a drink in your hand, and you politely laugh along with a man who stands beside you. Jake doesn’t recognise him, figuring it’s just some random trying to hit you up, and Jake can’t help but feel a swell of jealousy in his chest. He takes another swig from his drink, his hand tightly gripping around the bottle.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity, you excuse yourself from the conversation. You look around, grinning upon seeing Jake, and you quickly make your way over to him. Waving Hank down, you order, “Hey, Hank, can I get another drink? And another one for Jake here.”

You pat Jake’s arm, and Jake grins at you as you take a seat in the barstool beside him. Jake nods back to where you were previously standing, asking, “Who was that?”

You shrug, finishing off your drink. “Don’t know. He was boring.”

Jake snorts, feeling somewhat relieved to hear about your disinterest. You nudge Jake as Hank slides your drinks over to you, and you ask, “Why’d you ask?”

Jake quickly avoids eye contact, feeling somewhat embarrassed as he quickly stammers, “No reason.” 

Your eyes narrow at Jake’s expression, before you splutter, “You weren’t jealous, were you?”

“I’m not jealous!” Jake gasps, his overdramatic reaction only proving your point. You raise your eyebrows, and Jake lets out a defeated sigh. He should’ve known better than to lie to you, a fellow detective. His shoulders slump as he reluctantly admits, “Okay fine, maybe a little.”

“Hey,” you reach out, placing your hand on Jake’s arm, and Jake softens. You smile at him, before reassuring him, “You of all people have nothing to be jealous of.”

Jake’s eyebrows shoot up. “What does that mean?”

You chuckle, taking a sip of your drink, and Jake bites back his smile. The both of you drink together, knowing exactly what you mean as you shuffle closer to Jake, your leg pressing up against his.

Aaahhh hi Raven!! ❤️❤️ I'm doing better now when the full moon is over 😄 (I can't sleep properly for like 4-5 days when it's full moon, I'm crawling through with 2-3 hour sleep per night during that time) Stress is still present, dad case hasn't moved anywhere etc but I'm trying to stay strong. Writing stuff for Pin/Kaz/Freddy's characters is really comforting.

A woman resident here gives me a hard time but I'll manage, trying to stay out of her way. She glares at me and makes snobby remarks to things I say all the time and it really raises my stress levels, I've snapped back at her a few times and yeah, have said some stuff I know hurts her (which, of course, causes her to raise a drama how I said those things completely unprovoked 🙄) but she still had it coming, she knows exactly how thin my nerves + patience are right now. (As a super short and simplified version, she got mad at me when I told her that she really hurt me last summer when, according to her, I should have put her above my dying dad which has been her logic in everything else too since the start of 2021 but it extending to my dad was way overboard....... so we're having a serious fight over here)

But yeah, as I said, writing stuff for Freddy's characters makes me feel a lot better so that woman and everything else stressful doesn't feel as bad as they could feel 😊 Strange how much writing those can do.

Title: Just A Cover

Eggsy stood before you, subtly looking over his shoulder. He moved his glasses in order to see and turned back around to face you. His smirk was hidden as he brought the cup to his lips and pretended to drink.

“Target acquired” He muttered, lips stil hidden behind the cup. “Right behind me”

Your eyes fell over him, but they went past in order to search them for confirmation. As soon as you got eyes on the target yourself, you gave Eggsy a small nod and continued to blend in with the crowd that filled the glade that the festival took place in.

“Oh, no...” You muttered, feeling your heart racing in your chest.

“What?”

“They’re heading this way”

“Relax, luv, they won’t know-”

“What if they do?”

You could feel Eggsy’s eyes on you, staring in astonishment as you suddenly panicked. Normally, you knew how to stay calm during stressful situations like that mission... but when you were partnered up with Eggsy, things were different.

If you weren’t distracted by his flirting, you were trying to catch his attention yourself. And even if you weren’t interacting with him, Eggsy’s mere presence flustered you enough to be unable to perform well during missions. This time was no different.

“Stop freaking out...” He whispered, looking for the target with the corner of his eye. “It’ll be alright”

“And what if they see us? They’re right there and-”

Eggsy sighed, rolling his eyes, and pushed you against him. Before you could complain, he was smashing his lips against yours. Magically, all your frantic nervousness settled. Your heart was still racing, and now there were butterflies in your stomach, but somehow your panick subsided.

Just when you were starting to fully relax and enjoy yourself, Eggsy pulled away. You took a deep breath, realizing you had been holding it in, and stared at him.

“Done” He told you with a carefree shrug. “They don’t suspect a thing”

You immediately understood what he meant when you saw the target was now far behind you. Still, and as quick and smart as he had been, saving the mission, you couldn’t help but to gawk at him.

“What are you doing?!” You whispered yelled, trying to hide your embarrassment with outrage.

“It’s just a cover, luv” Eggsy smirked, despite the fact that his cheeks were adorned with a rose blush as well.

“You did that on purpose” You babbled, even though you knew he would understand what you were saying.

“I did not!” His tone was full of offense, but his grin spoke of his amusement. “We’re on a mission, Y/N”

“Right...” You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms and turning your back to him in order to hide your expression. “So you never flirt with me on missions or anything”

“I can’t help that you’re so gorgeous” He winked at you, also pinching your arm in a fond gesture. “But we can talk about that later”

The Sorting Hat (for Characters of Red, White & Royal Blue)

Alex Claremont-Diaz:  

Gryffindor

Alex is the kind of guy who understands that there are risks that come with his actions but decides to push through anyway.  While his penchant for intelligence gathering may be considered a bit Slytherin, most of his actions are less about ambition or self-preservation and more about doing what he feels is right or simply following his heart (and his emotions).  I can see an argument for him being a Slytherin, but I think he is just a bit too bold with his choices for him to really fit the bill for the snake pit.

Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor:  

Slytherdor (or if I really have to choose, Gryffindor)

Henry is more careful about his actions and feels a connection and responsibility to continue traditions despite the fact that his identity conflicts with those traditions.  He is far too bold to be a straight up Slytherin (who probably would have handled the whole situation a bit more quietly and cautiously), but he is ambitious and is concerned with keeping himself above water when the time comes.  This is why I would argue that he is a mix of both Slytherin and Gryffindor, but he is too driven by emotion for my to give the Slytherin part of him much thought (which is why - of the two options - he would be a Gryffindor).

Ellen Claremont:  

Slytherin

Ellen is VERY ambitious, and she puts ambition above most things.  She tries to ensure that she will get through the storm without many dents.  While she isn’t too interested in continuing with traditions (she is a pretty progressive politician) I still think she meets the criteria.  I honestly think that some of her more Slytherin traits may get in the way of her position as Alex and June’s mother, but that isn’t the question here.  She is still a good person who tries to do the right thing (which sometimes competes with her ambitions and sense of self-preservation).  Ultimately, I think she’s a Slytherin through and through.

June Claremont-Diaz:  

Gryffindor

June is a fighter through and through.  She doesn’t like the path she’s on, so she throws herself head first into a new one.  She is extremely bold and driven by heart and emotion (not a bad thing, but notable).  She takes risks without knowing how she’ll make it through.  June was willing to stray from what was expected of her in order to pursue what she believes will make her happy.  Gryffindor.  Through and through.

Nora Holleran:  

Ravenclaw

Nora is eccentric and extremely smart.  The fact that she is a human super computer should give away how she would sort.  Her eccentricities are also characteristics of Ravenclaw House. 

Beatrice Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor:  

Ravenpuff (or if I had to choose, Ravenclaw)

Beatrice is both creative and extremely loyal, a perfect mix of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.  She is willing to spend her time devoted to her passion for music and having fun in her own way, but when push comes to shove all of her passion is turned toward protecting her family and friends.  She’s a bit over the top in her more private personal life (the life she lives for herself, her mistakes and her successful passions) but beyond loyal when it comes to those who are important to her.  I feel that her desire to continue working on her music (despite the queen’s protestations) is what pushes her a bit more toward Ravenclaw, but her Hufflepuff side is extremely notable.

Philip Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor:  

Slytherin

Philip isn’t all that prominent a character, but he is far more traditional than a majority of the characters in this book so I have to throw him in with Slytherin House.  He is one of those bad examples for Slytherin that a majority of the House would want to disown for giving them all a bad name.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t fit into any of the other houses...

Catherine Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor:  

Hufflepuff

Catherine is driven by emotion, which led her to isolate herself from her family after her husband’s death.  However, it is also this driving emotion that leads her to be fiercely loyal and protective of her family.  I can’t sort her into Gryffindor as I doubt any Gryffindor would have let the queen inflict such injustice and pain on her [Catherine] and her family for so long, but her protectiveness and loyalty earns her a place in Hufflepuff.

Leo:  

Hufflepuff

Leo doesn’t play too much of a role, but he is very clearly loyal to his wife.  With what little information I could glean from the book about him, I would give him a seat at the Hufflepuff table.

Oscar Diaz:  

Hufflepuff (although I could also say Slytherpuff)

Oscar is loyal to his friends (as seen with Luna) and family, and he is more than willing to protect them with whatever power he had in his possession.  He is, however, quite ambitious (he’s a politician...), which is why I could also vouch for him as a Slytherpuff.  The book does not focus overly much on his ambitious streak, so that is why I will simply put him down as Hufflepuff.

Raphael Luna:  

Slytherdor (if I had to choose one, it would be Gryffindor)

Luna is quite courageous, but he does try his best to keep himself safe while he is being courageous.  Without a doubt I think that he is more Gryffindor than Slytherin because he makes too many moves that would have placed him and his career in danger, but there is that underlying ambition and a hint of the desire to keep himself safe that gives that Gryffindor red a hint of Slytherin green.  Though if someone were to claim him solely as a Gryffindor, I wouldn’t argue (much).

Percy “Pez” Okonjo:

Ravenclaw

Pez is wicked smart and quite... unique.  I don’t think there is a place that would fit him better than Ravenclaw.  He is creative, smart, and eccentric; he’d fit right in.

Amy Chen:

Slytherdor (and if I had to choose one, she would have to be a Gryffindor)

Amy is kick-ass, but there is just something about that aggression that screams Slytherin in the background of her bold as brass Gryffindor persona.  She is a way too calculating to be a straight up Slytherin and I think there is too much of that Gryffindor attitude to make her a Slytherin.  She made too many personal choices that would push her more red than green.

Cassius “Cash”:

Hufflepuff

Cash was more than willing to follow Alex to London and protect Alex’s secrets throughout the book to be anything but a Hufflepuff.  He is a bit hard to place because there isn’t much in the book about his character, but I feel that he’d be at home in Hufflepuff.

Shaan Srivastava:

Slytherpuff (but if I had to choose, he’d be a Slytherin)

Shaan is hard to place because he doesn’t say all that much that comes from him personally.  He is witness to Alex and Henry’s secret relationship, and he keeps their secret (Hufflepuff loyalty), but even the book says that he would only keep their secret for as long as it didn’t harm him or his career (Slytherin self-preservation).  Truthfully, I think he only kept their secret for so long because it didn’t benefit him or his goals to tell anyone.

Zahra Bankston:

Ravenclaw

Zahra is smart, organized, and Hermione-like.  She doesn’t really make too many moves that would be shows of personal courage (except for when she called Shaan’s personal number for Alex), but there are clear signs of intelligence and organization.  She is driven and focused, so I feel she fits the mold for Ravenclaw.

The Queen:

Slytherin

She gives Slytherin a bad name.  The queen hangs on to old, outdated tradition far too firmly and tries to save her own image by tearing down others.  Unfortunately, her actions do fit with Slytherin House’s traditionalism and self-preservation.  She is also outwardly cold but clearly driven by emotion which is kept reined in by her ability to make calculated moves.

I can totally see you as a Ravenpuff, you're kind and fluffy like that. I had an opinion question to ask if that's ok? Is it bad to still enjoy HP even with JK being the way she is?

I read an article about this or was it a podcast?  It might have been Fansplaining Podcast.  HP meant a lot to so many people, for many it shaped childhoods, identities, etc.  A big part of people’s lives.  I was in college when the third book came out which is when I started reading them so it is not as much a part of my growing up as it is for some.

The question comes down to can we separate the art from the artist?  And I don’t have the answer to that.  I have serious issues with JK and what she says and her attitude and behaviors.  For me personally, I am doing my best to not consume anything that would benefit her.  Not that I have been a huge consumer of her anyways.  But only you know what is the right answer for you.

It is a shame that so many people have been put into this awkward position.

I would LOVE to hear about your version of jacob - lottelight

1) Being an absolute disaster bi, poor Jacob Cromwell has never been very good at expressing his feelings to any subject of his affection, largely because it takes him a while to even acknowledge his feelings are romantic to begin with. (I pity his boy best friend Duncan Ashe SO much, I truly do.) He’ll frequently try to do stupid things or show off around people he finds attractive like a child acting out to get attention, sometimes consciously and sometimes not. One such example was when Jacob tried to impress a cute server at an Indian restaurant by ordering the hottest curry on the menu and then dousing it with the hottest red sauce they had available. All that, and the girl still didn’t give Jacob her number. D’oh!

2) Jacob may be an eccentric, daredevil scholar with a sloppy, “slacker” sense of dress, but contrary to his rebellious, devil-may-care image, his music taste is decidedly bubblegum. His favorite band and ultimate guilty pleasure is ABBA (sure-fire way to make this guy smile, sing, and/or dance: put on “Mamma Mia!” “Take a Chance on Me,” or “Dancing Queen”), but he also enjoys artists like Barbara Streisand, Don McLean, and the Osmonds.

3) If Jacob was confronted with his worst memories the way MC is in the Sunken Vault in-game (which, FYI, is very different to how I see the Sunken Vault), one memory would be his father, Evan Bach, losing his temper and saying that all Jacob ever does is cause everyone else trouble. Jacob was very, very shaped by that particular exchange, as well as what led up to it, more than he’d likely ever admit. As a kid, because of his temperamental childhood magic that was labeled as active misbehavior and Jacob plugging out from his classes and teachers in response to their unjust punishments, Jacob was seen as a no-good punk by just about everyone. When he received his letter and learned the truth about his magic, Jacob finally understood why he was so different from everyone else and was excited about the prospect of learning more about what he could do and reinventing himself into someone who could be a “winner” instead of the screw-up he’d been before. One of Jacob’s greatest insecurities is how much of a failure he feels he’s always been -- it makes it very difficult for him to acknowledge he’s unable to do something or put aside his own pride for the sake of the greater good.

4) Speaking of Evan, Jacob raised his younger sister Carewyn more than he ever did, since Evan dropped out of Carewyn’s life from an emotional standpoint when she was born and then abandoned his family when Carewyn was a toddler. When Carewyn was first learning how to talk, Jacob greatly enjoyed having passionate, spirited debates with her completely in baby talk.

5) Jacob has a long list of enemies, but one of the people who irritates him the most on that list is his old dormmate, Gilderoy Lockhart. Lockhart was always the most popular with the ladies out of the Ravenclaws in their year, and his arrogance, laziness, and vanity drove Jacob up the wall, particularly when Jacob easily ran intellectual circles around Lockhart in just about ever subject and yet Lockhart still acted like he was the most talented wizard in their year and in the whole school. Add on top of that that Lockhart was several inches taller than Jacob, who is akin to Edward Elric about his modest height of 5′7″...and yeaaaaah, one can imagine that Jacob loathed old Gilderoy. He never finds out that Lockhart modified Carewyn’s memory once, but rest assured if he ever did, there’d likely be an attempted murder. When Lockhart ends up in St. Mungo’s, devoid of any memory of who he is, Jacob takes vindictive pleasure in making fun of his old dormmate behind his back, referring to any time where someone forgets something important as them having a “Lockhart moment.”

6) After the Cursed Vaults and R are dealt with, Jacob becomes something of a vagabond wizard, traveling the world as a magical researcher and part-time Cursebreaker. His travels result in him crossing paths with Ellie Hopper’s grandfather Lugh @that-ravenpuff-witch, who ends up becoming something of a surrogate father figure for Jacob. As an ex-Gryffindor with a bold, adventurous spirit himself, Lugh takes great amusement from Jacob’s “daredevil scholar” attitude and frequently lets Jacob trip all the traps he can in whatever tombs they work on together, as he knows full well the younger man will probably get super excited studying how all of them work. Lugh and Jacob also both end up fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts at the end of the Second Wizarding War. When Lugh dies while fighting four Death Eaters at once, Jacob Cromwell takes violent revenge, blasting Dark curses at all of the Death Eaters in the vicinity with his two wands. It takes Jacob a long while to calm down afterwards so that he can properly grieve Lugh’s loss.

7) Jacob Cromwell is close friends with Sarahi Silvers’s brother, also named Jacob @dat-silvers-girl. Dynamic-wise Akemi and I have compared their relationship to that of Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, with Jacob Cromwell being the more eccentric free spirit and Jacob Silvers being more down-to-earth and loyal. Jacob Cromwell is always the person to encourage and help out with Jacob Silvers’s more, er...“interesting” inventions.

8) After the Cursed Vaults are dealt with and Duncan is finally able to rest in peace, Jacob remains good friends with Olivia Green. He writes to her almost as much as he does his sister Carewyn.

9) Jacob is BIG on the King Arthur mythos. One of his favorite book series is The Once and Future King by T.H. White, and his favorite Disney movie is The Sword in the Stone.

10) Jacob’s wand is Aspen and dragon heartstring, 13 inches, pliable. Dragon heartstring as a core tends to learn new magics quickly, create powerful, flamboyant spells, and be somewhat more susceptible to the Dark Arts than unicorn hair or phoenix feather, all of which perfectly suits intellectual, but aggressive Jacob. Aspen wands have a reputation of belonging to talented magical duelists, and Jacob fits that image perfectly as well. As an adult, Jacob even studies under a Navajo wizard in America who teaches him how to duel with two wands simultaneously. From that point on, Jacob duels with both his Aspen wand and a second wand made of Blackthorn and Wampus cat hair.

i was tagged by kira-desomma (who i will send the link for this to in a DM because tumblr’s tagging is acting REAL WEIRD) thank you!!! I’m gunna talk about Blood Song because while I’m finally getting back into the swing of editing Mina’s story, I think I’ve answered 101 tag game type things about that one so... Blood Song!

1:describe the plot in one sentence:

The government is trying to criminalize the existence of, and hunt down, people with genetic mutations that grant them one of four special “skills”, and June is unlucky enough to have what is considered the most dangerous skill of all. 

2: pick one sight, smell, sound, and taste to describe the aesthetic of your novel

Sight - City packed with sky scrapers so crowded together, so clouded with fog, that hardly any sunlight gets through

smell - Green apples

sound - Your own heartbeat drumming in your ears

taste - The taste of ink that floods your tongue when your IV gets flushed with saline

4: what’s the time period your novel takes place?

Future, for sure. Not wildly distant future but distant enough, but I’m thinking there was probably a war or something (I’ll admit, haven’t figured out that part of the history) long before the story starts that cut the country’s ties with the rest of their world and slowed down technological advances. So, future, but not ~futuristic~ if that makes sense.

5: are there any former titles you considered but discarded?

Listen, man. It’s... I’m bad at titles. This is a working title, not even the official one. Can we just be happy it has one?

6: what’s the first line?

Junelle Song. Black hair, brown eyes. Blood summoner. Extremely dangerous. Do not approach.

7: what’s a line of dialogue you are particularly proud of?

It’s still first draft and only a few chapters in which involve a good chunk of action so, unfortunately, there hasn’t been a whole hell of a lot of opportunity for really WOWing dialogue so far, but I think this is one of my favorite exchanges.

“Says here you’re a blood summoner, is that correct?”

“If I say no, do I get to go home? Courtesy shuttle to my front door?”

“No. Should I take that as a yes, then?”

“Take it however you like.”

8: which line from the novel best represents it as a whole?

ok so.. there are two that I think do it pretty well?

-  Our mother loved us until she found out, which begs the question: did she ever really love us at all?

-  If I focused, I could feel his blood pulsing through his veins like it was my own.

9: who are your character’s faceclaims?

Basically none of them have face claims, unfortunately. I think Pheonix looks a bit like Michael Hudson (the model, not the old guy that pops up when some people google him), and Nick looks a bit like Reese King but... it’s not bang-on by a long shot.

10: sort your characters into Hogwarts houses

Kassius is the most ravenclaw to ever ravenclaw. Phoenix is undoubtedly a hufflepuff and June is definitely a slytherin. Nick is... weird. He’s hard. I can’t decide between gryffindor or hufflepuff, or maybe even slytherin. Ivy is a gryffindor, Marina is a ravenpuff and you can’t make me choose one for her.

11: which character’s name do you like the most?

I LIKE THEM ALL THAT’S WHY I CHOSE THEM!!! But uh... I guess? top three???? June and Kassius Song, and Phoenix. He doesn’t have a last name and there’s something about that that I like.

12: describe each character’s outfits

June tends to run around in shorts and combat boots and a comfy top, though I often picture her with a tank top and some sort of like.. cardigan, or a light jacket. Her white jade lotus necklace is always a must though.

Kassius is all about the comfies. Warm knitted sweaters, flannel, soft jeans, sneakers, just comfy comfy comfy. And his adorable thick-rim glasses.

Phoenix prefers like... function? He likes to climb and run and work, so anything he can move in. Similar to June, probably a fan of shorts and tank top, maybe sweats and one of those huge heavy plaid jackets if it’s cooler. Always has his single feather earring. It’s not one earring, he has many, but he only wears one at a time in one ear and it’s almost always a feather. He is morally opposed to shoes until it’s too cold to be barefoot.

Ivy is all about cargo pants and a t-shirt. It’s easy. It has a bunch of pockets. I’m not sure what she’s trying to carry in all those pockets but she likes them.

Marina is way oversized pink sweaters and grey sweatpants and fuzzy socks.

Nick, like Phoenix, prefers things he can move in. Slim-fit stretchy track pants, black. Similarly closely fitted jacket, zipped up to his chin, also black. Lightweight boots laced tight enough to give his ankles some support, also black, but a little scuffed.

13: do any of your characters have distinctive birthmarks/scars?

Nick would probably have a few scars here and there but nothing huge. Marina has a shaved head with a tattoo on her scalp kind of curling around her ear. Ivy’s missing a whole entire leg, so there’s that. I also think she probably has a pretty massive scar somewhere on her face though I’m not quite sure where yet. 

14: which character most fits a character trope?

Ivy could easily fit that gruff and grumpy revolution leader type. She grumbles, she tells people she doesn’t care about their sob story, she smokes, just kind of... the grumpy leader trope.

15: which character is the best writer? Worst?

Kassius is the best, he loves story telling. Nick probably hasn’t been granted creative freedom once in his life, so he’s probably the worst.

16: which character is the best liar? Worst?

It’s.. really hard to be a good liar in this world since there are some people who can literally feel lies. I think Kassius, with his story telling, might be the best though I doubt he would use it often, if ever. Phoenix is the worst because he doesn’t care for lies at all, mainly because he’s one of the people who can feel lies so.. it’s just easier not to. You always know where you stand with him.

17: which character swears the most? Least?

Most: June or Ivy.

Least: Phoenix, probably. Maybe Kass.

18: which character has the best handwriting? Worst?

Marina has awful handwriting but it’s mostly because she’s just writing herself notes. If she slowed down, it’d be better. I feel like Nick would have surprisingly nice handwriting.

19: which character is most like you?

Kassius, I think.

20: which character would you most like to be?

June or Phoenix. I admire June’s bravery and fiery attitude, and I like Phoenix’s seemingly limitless kindness and energy.
