the only cycle they arent breaking is making out
i like to think 106 has to take a moment to sort out how he's feeling because previously the only reason his heart would race is because of the adrenaline of killing. now he has Raven.
#trepang2#106xraven#please dont beat me for posting 106xraven art#this is an apology for my last trepang2 post#for anyone wondering#i make 106's skin rather gray because i think he would kind of look similar to 107 but keeps most human features#trepang2 106#raven trepang2#raven x 106#art

It wasn’t infinite darkness once you had a moment to let your eyes adjust. It only seemed infinite in the dim light and the oddity of the room. You stood within a central foyer constructed of colorless brick, gaping doorways, each leading down a dark tunnel away from the circular room.
The purpose of the room was obvious. It was the beginning of a maze, a game that would be played among unwilling participants for the sadistic pleasure of their captor. You weren’t sure how the game was watched, but you doubted 106 would want to miss any of the fun and games.
This was his domain. Perhaps he saw all. If he saw you coming, that was fine with you. Better that then to surprise him.
Each doorway looked the same, equally dark and foreboding and entirely unhelpful. The shadows pervaded everything without a source of light, an unnatural realm that didn’t obey the laws of reality as you were used to. You had a feeling that was important. Maybe it didn’t matter which way you chose, just as long as you had a destination in mind.
You turned to Leahy, about to order him to move, but he was hunched over as if to catch his breath. He also gave you a strange look, and you automatically glanced down.
You were… glowing. Or not glowing, but as if the darkness of this place didn’t touch you, and in the end, it was the same result. You shone like a soft beacon, and it would be impossible to hide your presence.
Leahy’s uneven, labored breaths continued, his skin pale as he clutched his leg above the wound, and it seemed to grow worse by the minute.
“What’s wrong with you?”
He didn’t, or couldn’t, respond, as if it took all of his concentration to remain upright. You made a frustrated noise, stalked forward, and grabbed the sleeve of his dress shirt, yanking it up his forearm. As soon as your fingers clasped around his wrist, he took in a large gulp of air.
The same glow/absence of darkness surrounded him, and some color returned to his cheeks as he no longer looked on the verge of death.
Great. You fixed the problem, but now you had to hold onto him like a wayward child dragged around by his mother. His expression wasn’t far off, a bitter, wary frown that made you want to grab him by the scuff of his nape instead.
He didn’t thank you, but he did say, “This is insane. We’re going to die down here.”
An interesting way to put it. This dimension did feel downward, as if you were buried beneath the layers of reality in a place no digger could reach. Not a comforting thought.
But all you said was, “Be quiet,” and tugged him along. He followed, albeit unwillingly and at a slower pace thanks to his limp, but he did follow.
The corridor stretched onward, and even after several minutes you felt like you hadn’t gone anywhere at all. So, you stopped trying to go somewhere and just… walked. You emptied your thoughts until nothing remained, a blank determination to keep moving.
The labyrinth wanted you to grow tired, panicked, and riddled with fear. When you gave it nothing it could find pleasure in, that’s when you felt the way give, and before you lay a dark, open room. Only a narrow walkway over a chasm could be seen, and you walked forward without pause, otherwise it might be seen as hesitation.
Leahy didn’t make it easy, his uneven gait behind you threatened to throw you off balance. He better hope he didn’t, because you would take the bastard with him.
You did jolt to a stop when something massive and heavy whooshed inches from your nose. A large stone something moved in the dark, weaving in and over the pathway, a mad man’s puzzle that one was meant to solve while blind.
“We have to turn around,” Leahy growled past your head. “It’s a trap.”
“It’s a test,” you corrected him with a snap. Funny how he thought his opinion was wanted in any shape or form. “And if we go back, I guarantee we’ll end up right back in this room. Now shut up and let me think.”
There wasn’t much to think about. It was all timing, and you couldn’t see the way the pillar moved in the dark to find the rhythm.
Fuck it.
You dug your fingers into Leahy’s wrists and moved as soon as the pillar slid past your face. Your movement nearly tipped the man off balance, but he found his footing and stuck annoyingly close. Unfortunately, it was the best plan. The smaller a target you made, the less likely to go plunging into the depths.
The pillar continued to move in the darkness, an ominous low vibration marking where it passed, sometimes so close the displaced air tugged at your clothes and hair.
And then you were on the other side, untouched and unbroken. The rush that flooded your veins was dangerously satisfying, like you’d played Russian Roulette with the devil and watched as he blew out his own brains.
But there wasn’t time to gloat. You tugged Leahy along before he could fully catch his breath again, but at least he didn’t complain past a weakly uttered curse.
This corridor was different. It seemed to expand the longer you traveled, the bricks made of tan-colored stone, the grout crimson and tacky like blood. It gave the uncomfortable sensation of walking in a house made of flesh, and the rooms you passed with stone cells hanging from the ceiling did nothing to help that image.
You pushed forward and did your best to ignore the soft crying and moans that came from within.
The crimson grout seemed to spill outward until the stone was drenched in the color of blood everywhere you looked. The passage continued to expand until you stood inside a space that could only be described as a throne room. There was no lighting, no decorations, save for a massive stone seat that sat in its middle. The room was so dark it took a moment to realize the chair was occupied.
106, a grotesquely large version of him, leaned forward in his throne. There was a curious glint to his endless black eyes, his skeletal grin depicting malicious glee or hunger of the flesh. It was difficult to say.
The entity didn’t speak, if he even could. Instead, he simply… waited. Watching.
He knew why you were there, then.
By Leahy’s pale expression as he sized up the behemoth, he was starting to figure it out, too.
Your words were flat.
“Get on your knees.”
“No.”
To his credit, his voice didn’t shake, but you could feel the tremble that had started up within his bones.
You released his wrist. The glow blinked out like a burnt bulb, and he immediately gasped for air, gravity doing the work of collapsing him into a kneeling position.
The entity eyed the Site Director with barely contained hunger, but you stood behind Leahy and grabbed him by the nape of his neck, just as you imagined earlier. The glow returned, as well as the air to his lungs, and he spit out a guttural, “God… damn you, Reid.”
You ignored him, your hold on him firm when he attempted to struggle. But he was too weak, too overcome with pain and blood loss, and you didn’t need 714 to keep him under control.
You looked 106 in the eye.
“Am I to assume the Site Director had countermeasures in his office you couldn’t breach?”
Leahy had been entrenched, trapped, easy prey. 106 hadn’t attacked. A clever fox wouldn’t enter the hen house when the floor was covered in snares, but he would wait for them to come out, feeling safe and assured by the light of day.
Silence. Or… mostly silence. There was a low, gurgling noise coming from somewhere within the anomaly, like an eternally ravenous stomach that demanded to be fed.
“Well, here he is. And you know what I want.”
You said it anyway so there was no mistake.
“SCP-049.”
You were forced to hold on tighter to the back of Leahy’s neck as balked.
“Reid,” Leahy gasped out, desperate. “You can’t trust him. You can’t trust them!”
“Like I could trust you?”
Your words bit, colored by the rage that always simmered beneath the surface.
“Like you gave me a choice? As if I wanted to put the entire facility at risk? Put my friends and coworkers and the anomalies in danger? As if I wanted any of this—Shut up!” you snarled and cut through whatever he was going to say.
The entity remained silent, but the glittering eyes spoke of interest and amusement.
“I want to see him,” you hissed through your teeth as you glared upward at the entity. “Alive, or no deal.”
What you lacked in confidence you made up for with anger. There might not be much you could do if 106 decided to dismiss the bargain and simply take what he wanted. But you were done with anomalies using you for their own means, and there was no guarantee he could overpower you.
You remembered the test. Those black eyes glittering with something other than malice and hunger. You didn’t forget the fear you saw, and you were sure he hadn’t forgotten either.
Come on. You were counting on his predictability. 106 was a predator, but not always the pursuing kind. Sometimes he would lie in wait. Other times, perhaps he just wanted an easy meal.
This was a show for his benefit, proof you were a hunter, too. All you were doing was swapping prizes. His prey for yours.
Come on, you bastard. Come on.
And then 106 moved. He leaned back in his throne, his posture relaxed, lazy, a king before his trope of jesters.
You ground your teeth together. He wasn’t going for it. Why would he? Even if you escaped the pocket dimension, he count hunt Leahy on his own terms. You weren’t giving him anything he didn’t already have—
The wall to your right moved in an odd way. It bubbled outward, as if boiling on the surface, and then something broke through. It was difficult to make out the shape, nondescript and dark, some kind of fabric…
…And a white beak.
The figure slid from the wall, and you released Leahy the moment it hit the ground.
It wasn’t a great distance to run, maybe seven meters, but by the time you reached him it was as if you’d run a marathon, your breaths harsh and hitching. You grabbed his shoulders and rolled him onto his back, your hands desperate on his robes as if to prove he was real.
He was barely conscious, his grey eyes hidden behind heavy lids, unable to focus as his gaze slid past your face. The same glow illuminated him thanks to your touch, but he didn’t recover like Leahy had. Whatever had been done to him wasn’t surface level damage.
There was a scream, so full of agony and fear that you froze, instinctively looking up for the source of what could cause such a noise.
Leahy was sinking into the ground, or it was swallowing him. One of his hands had gotten free, but the other vanished into the black floor, his legs and knees already disappeared.
The hand that remained clawed outside the ravenous circle, as if to pull himself free. Leahy’s fingers dug at the tile for purchase, but he continued to sink, the floor now up to his waist.
You turned back to 049 and pushed out everything else. He must have been able to feel your grasp on his shoulders, his head tilted in your direction, but his eyes couldn’t focus—
Another panicked scream. Another involuntary turn of your head. Leahy wasn’t clawing at the ground now. He was reaching out. To you.
You tried to ignore him. You did, up until he cried out your name. Not your last name, but your first. You hadn’t known he’d even bothered to learn it.
Your hands shook as you pulled 049 into a sitting position, his weight difficult to move. You had to get him out. He wasn’t going to get better, not here, and you had to leave.
You had to leave.
“Get up,” you choked out with a desperate tug on his arm. “049, get up!”
Bit by bit, you managed to get him to his feet. He staggered and swayed dangerously, but you kept him upright, propped against your shoulder. Your journey back to the corridor was a drunken shamble, but there was progress.
You shut your eyes tight, fighting to block out the cries of Leahy begging you not to go, not to leave him like this. His pleas for mercy created a trapped scream in your throat.
Why didn’t 106 just kill him already?! But you knew the answer to that. 106 couldn’t have fun with them after death. You wished he would just end it, if only to stop the screams.
Each step was a battle, each breath too fast and shallow. 049 didn’t sound much better, his lungs rattled and wheezed, his arm draped over your shoulders heavy and boneless.
You couldn’t tell if the screams had finally stopped through the ringing in your ears, and you couldn’t see past the faint glow that surrounded you both. Like a lantern-lit ship in the mist, you sailed through a sea of inky black, unable to tell the waves from the sky. There was no direction, no physical space, not even a change of temperature. The darkness was so complete it suffocated.
It might have continued for minutes or centuries until your foot caught on a hard barrier and launched you forward. You clung to 049 as you fell, and fell, and hit the ground with a surprisingly soft landing.
Not that the ground was soft. It was hard, cold, and entirely too bright. Everything was bright, and you blinked the pain away until the room came into focus.
The medical bay, exactly as you left it—or almost. Aside from you and 049, the room was empty. 682 and 079 were gone.
Behind you, the black portal in the wall faded until it was a faint rust color, the surface stained but solid. It seemed 106 wasn’t in the mood for any more visitors.
Your hands were immediately on 049’s robes, checking for any obvious signs of injuries, feeling for his heartbeat and the rise and fall of his chest. He was unconscious, the last of his strength used to get him this far.
It was the last of yours, too. You pressed your cheek against his shoulder, curled up against him where he lay on his side. He smelled of things tainted from entropy. Rust and ruin and dust.
But his scent was still there, trapped under the bitter note of 106’s noxious lair. You buried your face in the hollow space under his hood, your nose against his neck. His familiar scent was there, both a comfort and an ache in your chest.
He was alive, he was breathing, but what if he didn’t wake? You didn’t know what 106 had done to him, or how to help him. No one at the Foundation had ever been able to keep 106’s victims alive more than a few hours, and you had no working equipment even if you knew what to do.
You were exhausted, in pain, tired and filthy. Worse, you were helpless. 049 was here, but he might already be gone.
What had been the point? What had been the goddamn point of it all if you couldn’t even save him!
You’d taken too long, been too slow. You were too late. You were too late—
Faint pressure on your back as a pair of arms slowly encircled you, and 049’s cheek pressed against the side of your head. Careful, gentle, and warm.
Alive.
You breathed.

Shifting Wings: Before the Raven Matthew, there was Jessamy, and Jessamy came with a little sister by the name of Adrienne. Dream adores his two little Ravens, but after over a hundred years of imprisonment and the death of Jessamy, Dream will find that he has not just lost his companion, but his beloved little Raven Adrienne no longer brightens the halls of his Palace. None of his staff wish to speak of where the Raven has gone, but the silent new resident of the palace is cause for question. After all, she was the one who aided in his release. If none of his subjects would help him find Adrienne, perhaps she could lead him to the whereabouts of the missing Raven. If only the woman wasn’t so flighty and hard to track down.

She has not shown herself to you, because she does not wish to.
Lucienne’s words haunted Morpheus in an Endless pain he felt within his being. He had expected you to seek him out the moment he returned as you had always been faithfully by his side. Not to mention he had made a promise to you that he was not able to keep. Surely you were upset by that. No, he had expected everything to be as it was when he had left. He’d been wrong. Lucienne changed. Cain and Abel changed. Fiddler’s Green changed. It was a naive notion to think that you wouldn’t change. Stewing in his morose thoughts, Morpheus decided he had brooded long enough. It was time he tracked you down, for Morpheus needed your comforting presence, even if you held nothing but animosity towards him. Even if all you’d allow was for the Endless to merely gaze upon you, that would be enough.
Rising from his throne, Morpheus stepped down the stairs and strode for the one place that would have the most clues regarding your whereabouts. Your studio. Striding through the palace, Morpheus pondered your absence some more, disturbed by your lack of appearance. Did you not love him as he thought you did? Had he not made his affections clear to you? Jessamy had certainly threatened him plenty over his intentions towards you. 106 years. How much could a person change in that time? Had your love dissipated and resentment taken shelter? Were you angry? Were you unconsolable? Did you want nothing to do with him and the palace after Jessamy’s death? Did you hate him? Perhaps you did if you refused his company.
He reached the door to your studio and paused. He couldn’t feel your presence within, but several light orbs were softly illuminated indicating that you had been within your studio recently. Opening the door, Morpheus stepped into your art studio and ventured forwards. There were paintings and sketches scattered throughout the studio, you were clearly still painting and drawing… but all of your works now held a darker tone. Your artwork reflected a darkened mind crippled by pain, agony.
Walking around your work bench, Morpheus eyed the luxurious bed, expecting to see your nest of pillows, feathers, and down. But all he saw was a neatly made bed, devoid of indication that anyone used it. The studio was used, yes, but clearly you did not use it as you once had. He looked closer at your sketches, many of which were sketches of Jessamy, beautifully sketched and detailed. Your skill had only increased. It only felt like a night ago in which you were just starting to learn how to draw in your new body.
“You look quite concentrated, little one,” Morpheus observed as he sat for you while you struggled to hold a pencil with your foot and draw his likeness. You growled under your breath and spit out a few curses which made Morpheus’s lips twitch. He doubted you noticed, but you truly came alive when you were focused on your art. The melancholy on your face faded and a spark of determination sparkled within the depths of your black eyes.
“That’s because I still sometimes have a hard time grasping this stupid pencil,” You huffed back, gripping the small instrument in your tiny foot. You hopped several places and flapped your wings. “I can control it pretty well at times but then it get’s away from me and everything starts going awry!”
You let out a caw of frustration and threw the misbehaving pencil across the room. It was much easier to paint, in your opinion, than to draw. You’d taken to the brush much quicker than the pencil, and your frustrations were starting to get the better of you. Morpheus rose from his seat and walked over to where you were standing, trying not to let your frustrations get the better of you.
“Why am I even doing this?” You asked with an exaggerated sigh. Morpheus lifted a finger to your beak and tilted your head up.
“Because you are determined, Adrienne,” He reminded you with a small smile. “And you are not one to give up so easily, your perseverance has brought you this far, has it not?”
You eyed your lord, seeing his provocative eyebrow raise. It ruffled your feathers and you huffed.
“I never said I was gonna give up, I just—I feel like I am not making any progress and it’s been decades.”
“And you have eons more to hone your skill, for I shall always look forward to your creations.” You eyed him carefully. Sometimes you really wished that you had your human body rather than a birds.
Don’t be envious. Don’t be envious. It wasn’t like the dreams and nightmares throughout the realm had the pleasure of painting Morpheus’s portrait with the Endless sitting right in front of them. It wasn’t like the Endless actively sought out their company.
“Fine, fine, sit back down I’m almost done with your general profile.” You ordered, having no issue ordering the Endless around. Morpheus, pleased that you had finally perked up, returned to his seat and watched as you fluttered to where your thrown pencil had ended up. Grasping it in your foot once more, you swooped back up to the easel and focused back on your sketch.
You were not a conventional lover, certainly if your relationship with him had grown more intimate. But at the time your company had been more than enough for him. Now all Morpheus wanted was to hear your comforting voice and see the familiar splash of midnight and pearl. Even if it was only to hear your thoughts of envy and yearning for what you had once had. He also owed you an apology. Not just for the fact that he had broken his promise to return with an hour, but your sister had been killed while in his service. It had been voluntary, but you would still feel betrayed.
Morpheus was about to leave the studio, not having garnered any new information from inspecting your studio, but then caught sight of a brighter light peeking out the trim of the small closet. Curiosity peaked, for why would you have the closet light so bright compared to the rest of your studio? Morpheus drew the slightly cracked door open and found his answer. Compared to the rest of the studio, the closet was far more homely and lived in. Down and feathers littered the floor, and there was a nest tucked in the corner. That was where you slept. But what Morpheus took notice most of all, was the obsessive amount of drawings of Jessamy.
They were everywhere, pinned on the walls, stacked on shelves, stuffed between books on a small bookshelf. He moved over to a stack that sat next to a bowl full of charcoal, clearly being used. On the top of the pile was a sketch of himself with Jessamy, the drawn lines darkened and clear, sharp. His eyes were the only hint of color on the page, an illuminating blue. By far your best work yet, not even Morpheus had seen you draw this beautifully. As Morpheus stared at the sketch, he spotted something at the edge of the page that should not be there. A charcoal fingerprint.
All who knew you, who lived within the palace, knew to never touch your artwork unless permission was given. Who would even think to enter a place so small and intimate, one you took shelter in, and touch your work? Certainly with charcoal on their fingers? Morpheus reached for a journal he had given you, inscribed with your name in gold lettering, and opened it. More pictures of him and Jessamy greeted his gaze. It was just as obsessive, and Morpheus could see your mental breakdown over the years. But even as he witnessed your breakdown through your drawings his eyes kept returning to the fingerprint upon your sketch. So journal and sketch in hand, he strode from your studio and headed for the library, determined to finally get answers.
Lucienne had been speaking with Mervyn about the newly rejuvenated gardens when their lord came striding into the library with a swirl of anger. Her brown eyes saw that he carried a leather-bound journal she often saw you drawing in, and a piece of parchment.
“Sir,” Lucienne greeted, trying to keep herself calm. “Is there something you need?” Morpheus strode up to her and held up a charcoal drawing of him with Jessamy perched on his shoulder. “Ah, I see you have discovered Adrienne’s artwork? She has much improved over the last century.” Lucienne said pleasantly, ignoring the charcoal fingerprint on the edge.
“Tell me, Lucienne, who enters Adrienne’s studio and touches her work when we all know that is an egregious event?” Morpheus asked, his voice poised with a lethal edge of a dagger. Both Mervyn and Lucienne shifted where they stood.
“I— I am not aware that anyone has entered Adrienne’s studio without permission let alone touched her work. We know she does not like it when her work is touched.” Lucienne replied evenly, reverting back to what was well known about you. “Not even to admire…” Morpheus shifted his gaze to Mervyn.
“And have you, Mervyn, witnessed anyone trespassing these halls? Surely you have seen something, as Adrienne does not possess hands.” He was enunciating his words now, his patience dwindling at the lack of information on you. Where were you? Why had you not appeared before him? Did you truly hate him? Did you despise him for Jessamy’s death? Were you in such anger that you would refuse to grace his presence ever again? Mervyn rubbed the back of his head, not knowing what to say. The promise he made to you all those years ago to treat Adrienne as dead was still strong… but lie to his lord? That he could not do.
“Well…” Mervyn sighed dramatically. “No one has gone into her studio who shouldn’t have, I can tell you that. She’d eat ‘em alive if they did… kinda anal about keeping people out actually. She’s gotten mean the past few decades,” He muttered while Lucienne forced herself to not facepalm herself in front of Morpheus. Mean. Adrienne had gotten mean. That was the first piece of true information Morpheus had gotten since coming home. But how could you have turned mean? You didn’t hold one mean bone in your entire body.
“Mervyn,” Your quiet, flat voice shattered the tension between the trio as you came striding into the library. The pumpkin headed janitor looked at you as you came to a stop. Your hair was ruffled and your clothes looked hastily put on. “I retrieved the sprite lantern from the relieving arch.” You announced. “If you want the Hesperides to stop throwing the lantern up there, may I suggest moving it? They despise each other.”
“Move it?” Melvyn repeated, insulted at the idea. “The whole point of having the spite lantern there is because of the water— ah fuck, I’m really gonna have to find a new place for the lantern, ain’t I?”
“Indeed,” You echoed, knowing that the janitor hated when he had to shift the homes of the residents of the palace around. They were quite persnickety about their place of home. You contemplated where the sprite lantern could be moved. “Perhaps the east end garden? I believe Lord Morpheus put in a new pond there.”
“Yeah, yeah, good idea,” Mervyn agreed before glancing at Morpheus. “Speaking of which, you met whitey here?” He asked, jerking his stick thumb at you. “She’s kind of mean and never smiles, not that she can, but is one hell of a worker to have around. She’s kept this place running while you were gone.”
You blinked at Mervyn before looking at Lord Morpheus.
“We have met before, though never the chance to formally speak,” You confirmed, then gave Mervyn an unimpressed look. “And I believe you mistake my frankness for me being mean, because that would imply emotions which you are aware that I do not experience.” As you stared at Mervyn who was scowling at you, you felt Morpheus gaze wearing heavily on your body. “If you will excuse me, retrieving the sprite lantern from the receiving arch is not the only task I have do to this day,” You said before giving your lord a respectful nod. “Lord Morpheus,”
You strode out of the library, heading for your next task. Morpheus stared at your back as you strode away, still feeling like there was something off about you. No, there was. He just couldn’t put his finger on it, and it wasn’t that you lacked empathy. It was something else. Something about you was hauntingly familiar, yet entirely foreign.
“Where did she come from?” He asked, settling his gaze back on Lucienne and Mervyn. They shifted uncomfortably. “She might be a resident of the Dreaming, but I have no memory of her. So tell me, exactly where did she come from? You say she has maintained my palace diligently all these years, yet I do not know her.”
“I just realized that I left the sprinkler on in the desert garden so I’m just gunna…” Mervyn rambled while edging his way out of the library, Morpheus made no comment, his eyes locked with Lucienne’s, who was staring back and trying not to be daunted. A nearly impossible task, even for her.
“Only a creature with wings, is capable of retrieving something from the relieving arch,” Morpheus stated, his eyes now hard. He was done asking questions. Yes, done with asking questions, worrying about where you were, wondering if you hated him, needing you… and would now demand answers. He demanded to know where you were, he demanded your presence. The secrets had gone on long enough. Even if you did in fact hate him, he still demanded your presence. “I expect Adrienne in my throne room tomorrow morning at ten o’clock exactly,” Morpheus decreed, then his eyes glowed silver in warning. “Or I shall summon her directly with my sand regardless of her wishes.” With that he strode away, coat billowing just as much as his anger.

Hello everyone!
Today I am delighted to present you the first of the series you were able to choose thanks to the survey done on my Instagram (@theaddictedwatcherreviews): Sandman! Series composed of 11 episodes released in August 2022, adapted for Netflix from Neil Gaiman’s eponymous comics, the series was a great success and I’m going to tell you why.
A short synopsis to introduce you to the series: Morpheus, the King of Dreams, is one of the seven Endless. While he finds himself captured by a British occultist for nearly 106 years, the Awakened world - that of Men - sinks into an epidemic of « sleep disease ». Indeed, since the Sand Merchant is no longer there to rule the world of Dreams, Men on Earth are sinking. However, he manages to escape and undertakes a journey through the two worlds to find what was stolen from him in order to rebuild his Kingdom, which finds itself in ruins following his long absence.
And a small technical presentation:
- Created by : Allan Heinberg
Based on Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels, Sandman, published between 1989 and 1996 by DC Comics
- Music by : David Buckley
- Main casting : Tom Sturridge, Vanesu Samunyai, Eddie Karanja, Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Mason Alexander Park, Razane Jammal, Sandra James-Young, David Thewlis.
When announcing the serial adaptation of the Sandman comics, Neil Gaiman said that he would be more involved than he was in the television adaptation of his novel American Gods (released in 2001 and adapted by the Starz channel in 2017), but less than in the adaptation of Good Omens (co-written with Terry Pratchett, published in 1990 and adapted by Prime Video and the BBC in 2019 to meet a posthumous request from Terry Pratchett). He was therefore part of the creative team, the executive production of the series and made important narrative changes with the team of authors compared to comics.
Indeed, the story begins in 2021 instead of 1989 in comics, and Morpheus/Dream -played by Tom Sturridge- was imprisoned for 106 years instead of 75. Other characters have also been adapted to correspond to current questions such as Doctor Destiny, who is embodied in the form of his alter ego John Dee -played by David Thewlis- or John Constantine who has been reinvented as a female character, Johanna Constantine - played by Jenna Coleman. The role of Matthew the Raven -played by Patton Oswalt- has also been expanded in the series so that Morpheus has someone to communicate his thoughts with, which was represented by bubbles in comics but is impractical to do in live-action. Allan Heinberg, the creator of the series, explains that for him « Sandman comics were ahead of everyone in the late 1980s in terms of the representation of women, race, sexuality and gender ». Neil Gaiman explained that he chose to remove various references to the DC universe - such as the presence of Martian Manhunter and Mister Miracle - because the Sandman series was moving away from the initial links with the DC universe. This will also avoid the potential implications that the series could have with other adaptations of DC Comics in the future.
One of the first remarks I will make would be about the quality of the casting choices to embody absolutely all of the characters -the heroes of the story as well as the antagonists. In the cast, I only knew the characters least present, which does not mean that they are characters of lesser importance. Indeed, you may recognize in the names of Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who), Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Wednesday), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who), Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, Doctor Who, The Borgias), Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve), James McAvoy (X-MEN, Split), Neil Gaiman himself or David Tennant and Michael Sheen (Good Omens). As for the most central characters in the story, like Morpheus -embodied by Tom Sturridge-, the Corinthian -played by Boyd Holbrook- or Lucienne -played by Vivienne Acheampong, it has been brought to my attention after having seen the series that I had previously seen them in various other productions but they hadn’t made a strong enough impression on me in these respective roles and I had all the pleasure to rediscover their talent fully in this series. Each and every actor and actress -whether they are main characters, secondary or even special guest- have been able to bring their own mark on their role, something that identifies their character with their signature. This is partly what makes this production very qualitative in the sense that not only is it very well interpreted but also unique enough to stand out from the thousands of other fantastic series that are released every year.
In addition, I would like to take a moment to talk about the artistic direction of the series. Sandra Phillips and Luc Whitelock, the two artistic directors of the series, did a phenomenal job. Whether on the special effects themselves or even simply on the light games, the camera angles, the different atmospheres from one episode to the next, contribute to creating a very characteristic atmosphere and aesthetic which reinforce its fantastic-horrific aspect. Because, make no mistake about the atmosphere, although the series is tinged with onism through the various worlds of the Endless, it is also imbued with a dose of horror and macabre in the world of the Awakened. Through this aesthetic dichotomy, the series shows the best and worst of humanity, how humans could -if we were to let ourselves be governed by our animal instincts- sink into self-destruction, chaos, violence and let all our worst flaws dominate us. I will not develop more but if you are sensitive -or curious- to what I am talking about, I am particularly refering to episode 5 of season 1 entitled 24/7…
During the creation of the series, David S. Goyer, Allan Heinberg and Neil Gaiman explained that they often discussed the following question: « Why is it essential to tell Sandman’s story now? » To which Allan Heinberg answered every time « Sandman is an exploration of what it means to be human. To be mortal and therefore vulnerable. Able to be hurt, but also able to love and be loved. Sandman is the story of an honorable and arrogant king who learns slowly, very slowly, to love. » David S. Goyer adds that the series is summarized as « the story of a god who, in the course of history, loses his divinity, becomes mortal and learns what it means to be mortal. This is the story of a really crapy dysfunctional family. The Endless, even if they are divine beings, all have their little quarrels. Some of them hate each other. Some love each other. It’s just that when they fight, it’s whole worlds and universes that suffer from it » and called it a melodrama. Morpheus is sometimes simultaneously a protagonist and a catalyst for the events of the series, he is a character who « cares about humanity in the abstract, but not in the concrete ».
I also would like to acknowledge the work on costumes done by Sarah Arthur who managed to give a strong visual signature to the characters and managed to make them stand out from each other while giving clues about the links between certain characters through small details slipped here and there into the costumes of the main characters.
Finally, as always, I will finish by telling you a little about the soundtrack of the series built by David Buckley. Not only do the different themes of the series make it possible to accentuate the different main characters as well as their intentions, but the music also makes it possible for the viewer to travel between the different worlds explored alongside Morpheus.
If there is one thing I must admit to the series distributed and produced by Netflix, it is that not a single one of the ones I have seen could be qualified to have a bad soundtrack. Although obviously I have not seen their entire catalog, I think I have seen enough to make this remark, which remains a subjective and personal opinion. Obviously you are free to disagree and please let me know if you do, I will discuss it with pleasure! But, at least at the moment I write these lines, none comes to mind.
I think I’ve talked enough to leave you here for this article on the Sandman series! I hope I made you want to at least take a look at this masterpiece!
Don’t forget to keep an eye every Saturday on my Instagram account (@theaddictedwatcherreviews) if you want to be able to choose the subject of the next article!
In the meantime, I wish you good viewings and I’ll see you very soon with new adventures!

An interesting offer led you to the elder Alex Burgess and you were hired as a new housemaid for a very good pay. However, your kindness and outstanding empathy convinced the man to give you an additional task for a doubled compensation; gaining the trust of Dream Of the Endless, held captive into the basement for over a century. Despite the shock of finding such an ethereal entity stripped of all his clothes and contained into a confined space, you had to accept for the sake of your father. But the more you got to speak to the mysterious anthropomorphic personification who didn't utter a single word, the more you were lost into his eyes that, conversely, seemed to contain the entire universe. A deep connection formed between the two of you, separated only by a thick layer of glass.
Little did you know, what started like a simple housemaid job was about to change your life forever.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2025: Chapter rewritten to better match my current writing style. It now has better wording and a few more additions.
Chapter 2
The end justifies the means. Or does it?

For 106 years, Morpheus had witnessed only humanity's darkest side. The villainous Roderick Burgess tormented him relentlessly, demanding gifts beyond his power to grant—gifts that humankind was never meant to receive.
After Roderick's death, his son Alex inherited all the Magus's possessions, including the Endless himself. Desperate, the young man offered Dream freedom in exchange for his and Paul's safety, a proposal he hoped would seem reasonable enough to conclude this unwanted business. Morpheus could have accepted, finally regaining his liberty, fulfilling humanity's essential need for dreams and restful sleep.
Regrettably, forgiveness eluded his heart.
Alex Burgess had slaughtered his raven, Jessamy, before Dream’s very eyes. The gruesome scene was etched in his memory; her blood staining the glass, her lifeless form crumpled on the ground. They had robbed him of his companion, just as they had pilfered his helm, ruby, and pouch of sand. They had shattered his very being, leaving him a shell of his former self, yet they had the audacity to demand favors as if he were a genie in a lamp. A few taps on the glass and—voilà!—wishes granted.
Alex sought an answer, but Morpheus responded with stony silence.
As a result, the Endless remained confined within the sphere for many more years, isolated from his powers and domain. He consistently rejected any proposals from Alex, viewing him as a spineless individual who had initially committed wrongdoing under the sway of his father's malevolence, only to then perpetuate the same oppressive system and continue Roderick's nefarious work.
As Alex aged and his health declined, his visits to the basement became infrequent. Nevertheless, he would occasionally descend, stubbornly seeking a response he knew would never come. Two guards maintained a constant vigil in the cellar, especially during nighttime hours, observing Dream's immobile figure from afar. Sometimes, they would relocate to the main door upstairs, leaving the Endless entity in complete isolation within his gloomy captivity.
But then, one fateful night, an unexpected visitor appeared in the basement—a woman whose presence defied the somber atmosphere aroung him. Shivering in her uniform, she stood in front of Dream, her exposed limbs betraying her discomfort in the chilly air.
Despite her apparent misplacement, she offered him something he had not received in over a century, if ever: genuine compassion. This mortal not only recognized his true identity but also grasped the profound importance of his existence for humanity. As their eyes met, Dream observed a complex interplay of emotions on her face; concern, empathy, and a subtle undercurrent of sorrow. The intriguing depth in her expression piqued his curiosity, prompting him to unravel the mystery behind her enigmatic soul.
He anticipated seeing her again in the near future. Alex had tempted her with a generous financial offer, exploiting her father's illness and the associated medical expenses. Aware of human vulnerabilities, Alex Burgess had skillfully targeted the woman's weak point to manipulate her for his own purposes.
Dream, however, remained resolute in his refusal to yield. If his imprisonment was to continue for years to come, he was determined to ensure Alex's suffering persisted until his final breath. His steadfast stance was not merely out of spite, but a testament to the magnitude of his pain for Jessamy's untimely demise. A punishment for Alex's failure to resist when Roderick armed him, and for the glaring absence of remorse, coupled with the brazen expectation that Morpheus should simply absolve and disregard the transgressions committed against him.
Nevertheless, even without his powers, Dream instinctively sensed the woman’s uniqueness. Her perception captivated him, and her aura awakened a sense of intrigue and fascination within him, stirring things he hadn't experienced in eons.
Your usual nightly routine of restlessness took on a new dimension. While insomnia was a familiar occurrence, tonight an additional force kept slumber at bay.
The idea of escape had flitted through your mind, an understandable impulse given your unsettling situation. Yet you swiftly banished the thought, resolving to stay put despite the discomfort. Your precarious financial state left you little choice; you couldn't afford to lose this well-paying job, uncomfortable as it was, with all its accompanying secrets.
From the moment you accepted the position, your intuition had been on high alert. The rumors were worrisome, but you were skeptical about their veracity. That is, until the Burgess couple alluded to the possibility of an unusual entity confined in the basement.
You vividly recalled your first impression of the house: in spite of its cozy ambiance and the pleasant aroma of aged wood, an undeniable sense of foreboding permeated the air. Moreover, you felt an inexplicable attraction to the basement, a compelling urge to involve yourself in something entirely foreign to you.
Finally, you came face-to-face with him—Dream. He was a vision of ethereal beauty, his eyes shimmering with a celestial glow, his alabaster skin seeming to radiate light. A powerful, inexplicable connection formed between you when your eyes met, when your fingertips grazed the glass, when he moved closer within his prison, drawn to your presence.
It was brief, and you had likely imagined something that wasn't truly there. Even so, you felt it in your core, resonating through your entire being, from the marrow of your bones to the tips of your hair.
You reached for your phone on the nightstand, quickly unlocked it, and conducted a search. Your shaky fingers tapped the first highlighted result, revealing an old Daily Mail article from 1926:
𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐘 𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒: 𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐃 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒, 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐍 𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐒
The mysterious illness that emerged in 1916 left some victims desperately seeking sleep, while others became trapped in a perpetual state of sleepwalking. This enigmatic pandemic, later dubbed Encephalitis Lethargica, coincided with World War I and the devastating Spanish flu outbreak. Despite its apparent viral nature, the true cause remained elusive even in 2022.
You had grappled with insomnia since childhood, rarely remembering your dreams, if they occurred at all. The discovery of The Sandman's imprisonment in Fawney Rig finally offered a potential explanation for your persistent sleep troubles, which had stubbornly resisted even prescribed medications.
You delved into various online discussions about Encephalitis Lethargica. Some theories linked it to the Spanish flu itself, while others suggested supernatural origins. Although neither theory had definitive proof, you were aware that the latter, surprisingly, wasn't entirely baseless.
You wrestled with an ethical quandary now: how should you proceed regarding Dream? Declining the offer probably wouldn't cost you your job, as it wasn't part of your initial agreement, and dismissing you wouldn't benefit your employers in any way. While your current pay was already generous, accepting an even higher salary to oversee an imprisoned entity would compromise your moral standards.
Dream's visage was seared into your mind, and the prospect of knowing the truth while feigning ignorance was absolutely unbearable to you.
Restlessness consumed you, banishing all traces of fatigue. Setting your phone aside, you cast off the bedcovers and rose, drawn to the bag resting on the small desk by the window. With practiced movements, you extracted a notebook and pencil, pulled out the chair, and settled in, bathing your workspace in the warm glow of the table lamp.
Drawing was your sanctuary, a soothing balm for your agitated mind. Your demanding schedule scarcely left room for phone calls or sit-down meals, let alone personal time. Thankfully, your upcoming day off would provide an opportunity to reunite with your father following a fortnight's absence and lack of communication.
Inspiration flowed through your fingertips as you sketched on the blank page, each pencil stroke bringing your vision to life. The rhythmic ticking of the wall clock blended seamlessly with the gentle whisper of graphite on paper, creating a tranquil ambiance conducive to creativity.
Abruptly, your mind wandered and your hand fell still. Turning the page, you abandoned the half-finished sketch of a dress you'd envisioned for months. Your pencil sprang back to life, tracing lines with a will of its own. You embraced the spontaneous imagery, your fingers smoothing and molding as it emerged. After nearly an hour, a new creation lay before you.
As midnight approached, you found yourself captivated by your completed artwork. With a slight narrowing of your eyes, the intricate patterns seemed to come alive, echoing their original inspiration. The pencil slipped from your fingers as you gently traced the lines with graphite-smudged fingertips, exploring your creation with a newly discovered admiration.
Your gaze was entranced by your meticulous rendering of one of Dream's eyes, the intricate patterns in his iris seeming to shift and swirl. Reminiscent of a cosmic dance among distant stars, they undulated and mesmerized you in what seemed to be a great optical illusion, finally ushering in the long-awaited drowsiness that promised a restful sleep.
The following morning, you woke up astonishingly early. The predawn sky painted a canvas of deep blue, gradually giving way to streaks of orange and gold. While your colleagues were just beginning to stir, you had already set out, embarking on your journey to see your father again after a prolonged separation.
The return trek from Fawney Rig to town took just under 60 minutes, combining a taxi ride and a brief walk. Upon arrival, you found your father in bed, his face illuminating with joy at your presence. He welcomed you with open arms, enveloping you in one of his trademark bear hugs—a gesture you had deeply missed and would never tire of. It was heartening to feel the surprising strength still present in his embrace.
During your absence, the nurse provided excellent care for him. He was well-nourished and engaged in various activities, including chess matches, extensive reading, and watching his beloved cheesy movies throughout the week. Despite noticing he might have shed some weight since your last visit, you observed that his overall health seemed to remain as steady as it had been in recent weeks.
Around noon, Dr. Mills, the family physician, made his appearance to administer your father's medication and conduct a thorough assessment on his condition. Afterward, he retired to the living room, busying himself with organizing paperwork and setting up his laptop to examine complex tables and delve into his research.
You always respected his commitment to his work. Instead of passively waiting and doing the minimum required, he actively sought out effective solutions for his patients.
Seeking a moment of privacy to reconnect, you joined your father in his bedroom, settling beside him on the spacious mattress and draping a cozy blanket over your legs.
"You look exhausted, sweetheart," your father observed, adjusting himself more comfortably against the pillows. "Is that job of yours keeping you so busy?"
"Well, I had trouble sleeping last night."
"Still battling insomnia?"
"Yes," you replied, your voice wavering slightly. "Just the usual insomnia."
Keeping secrets was not your forte, and your emotions gave you away through gritted teeth and knitted eyebrows.
"Something's troubling you, though. What's wrong, Y/N?"
You forced a smile. "It's nothing, dad. I've just got a lot on my mind lately."
He gently took your hand in his, his thumb tracing soothing circles on your skin. "I know you're trying to protect me from worry. But please, if there's anything serious going on, don't shut me out. No matter what it is."
As compelling as his arguments were, you were determined to shield him from needless concern. The last thing you wanted was to burden him with problems that could potentially worsen his already delicate health.
"Dad, I assure you, everything's fine. I'm just worried about you, and indeed, work has been keeping me occupied."
That statement wasn't entirely inaccurate, to be fair.
"Sweetheart, I deeply appreciate your efforts… please don't think otherwise. But I should be the one taking care of my daughter, not vice versa. You're passing up so many opportunities. When will you start living the life you deserve?"
Your eyes stung with tears. "You've cared for me since I drew my first breath. You'll always be my priority, I owe you that much."
He sighed. "This job you're doing? A housemaid for a rich bastard with a questionable reputation? Jesus Christ, I strongly disapprove."
You chuckled. "That reputation actually stems more from his father... and he compensates me generously. This benefits you too, as I'm sure you've noticed."
"You know what else I've noticed? You're dishearteningly unhappy, my dear. You possess dreams and an enviable creative talent that are simply withering away."
Dreams…
The image of Dream of the Endless instantly flashed in your mind, trapped in that sphere, vulnerable and alone. Subjected to mistreatment for more than a century, stolen from his realm, forced to neglect humanity's needs.
You shook your head, forcefully pushing that mental picture away. "Dad, my dreams are on hold for now. You come first, whether you like it or not."
"Y/N, do you have a moment?" Dr. Mills called out as you stepped into the lobby, your coat already buttoned and bag slung over your shoulder.
"Of course," you replied. "Is everything all right?"
He looked particularly distressed—his hair disheveled and his tie partially undone. "There's something I need to show you."
Silently, you followed Doctor Mills into the living room, your steps heavy as if marching to the gallows. The coffee table was strewn with medical records and documents, presenting a sea of information you could barely comprehend. Their mere presence, however, made it clear that Dr. Mills wasn't bearing good news.
As you sank onto the couch, your legs felt unsteady and your chest constricted. Although the heating system had already been turned off for the season, you found yourself unbuttoning your coat as the room suddenly felt warmer. In reality, your breathing had become increasingly rapid and shallow.
Doctor Mills sat down beside you. "I'll be direct," he said. "Your father has been on the same medications for quite some time. While they've kept his condition stable until recently, they're no longer as effective as they should be."
Please, no.
"What does that mean?" you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
"We need to try a different approach again," he explained. "Your father has lost some weight despite eating regularly. This indicates his stomach isn't properly assimilating nutrients, which his latest blood test confirmed.”
Your hands trembled. "Is he aware?"
“He's not. I thought it best to inform you first."
You fought back tears, determined not to break down in front of him, or anyone. "What kind of approach should we try this time?" you asked, the turmoil within you erupting into a cascade of sharp knives that pierced you all over.
"This is what I really wanted to discuss with you," he clarified, turning his laptop to show you a PDF document on the screen. "It's a highly experimental treatment, not yet on the market. I can't make any predictions, but the clinical trials have shown promising results. There might be some side effects, I won't sugarcoat it, but there's also a significant chance for your father's recovery."
You leaned in to examine the file more closely. The document was filled with a bewildering array of codes and scientific jargon that left you perplexed. "So, if I understand correctly, this treatment could potentially restore my father to a normal life?"
He rifled through the various sheets on the table, some even falling to the carpet in his agitation. Ignoring the scattered papers, he responded, "Yes, that's what I'm saying. It may take time to see results, but it could actually work. Unfortunately, there's a substantial obstacle we need to overcome."
Of course there was a problem. When isn't there one?
He pointed to a row of text on a paper he retrieved from the various documents. "As you can see, it's extremely expensive. The money you sent recently was enough to cover the current medications, treatments, and 24/7 care. Unfortunately, it won't be sufficient to pay for everything in the future, especially with this new medication added to the mix."
The numbers on the paper hit you like a punch to the gut. Your head spun, and a deafening ringing filled your ears, drowning out even the ticking of the clock. The cost of the new treatment was astronomical, twice what you currently earned at Fawney Rig all things considered.
"Miss Y/LN, I assure you this isn't a request without reward. I'm prepared to double your current monthly salary for this service."
"I've sent you numerous emails over the past few months, and I know you're doing everything in your power. It's truly admirable, and I know I'm asking a great deal of you. I wouldn't propose this if it weren't our last remaining option."
Your last remaining option. Put simply, refusing this new treatment would effectively seal your father's fate, sentencing him to a rapid decline.
One thing remained undeniable: you weren't prepared to bid him farewell just yet.
Your lip quivered as you struggled to maintain composure. The weight of the decision before you felt overwhelming, unlike any challenge you'd faced before. You stood at a crossroads, battling with a choice that seemed impossible to make.
You despised this. You loathed what you were about to say.
Yet, in the end, what genuine alternative did you have?
"I've just taken on a new task at work. I'll be able to cover the cost for the upcoming month, if that's acceptable."
Doctor Mills was visibly taken aback, clearly not anticipating such a positive response from you—and understandably so.
"Oh! This is truly exceptional news!"
His excitement was touching, but your emotions were in a state of flux. You were devastatingly torn between feeling optimistic about this newfound ray of hope and utterly destroyed by the complications that lay ahead to make this potential miracle a reality.
"May I proceed with administering the treatment next week?"
Your hands clenched into fists, nails digging into your palms.
You turned to him, forcing a faint smile onto your lips. "Please."
Your mind raced with conflicting thoughts as your heart ached with indecision. You pondered the notion that everything happens for a reason, yet struggled to reconcile it with your current predicament. How could you justify restoring your father's health if it meant prolonging the agony of someone who had already endured centuries of torment?
You struggled to accept the idea of exploiting Dream's imprisonment for your own benefit. While some might argue that the ends justify the means, you found this reasoning flawed and ethically dubious. To you, there was no justification for actions that could harm another sentient being, regardless of their nature. Dream, despite being an immortal creature, was as deserving of proper consideration as any human, be it you, your father, or your employers.
Upon reflection, you found it difficult to sympathize with Mr. Burgess. While you recognized the situation's intricacy and understood the fear of Dream's potential retribution, the Endless' demeanor suggested there was more to the story than revealed. Moreover, keeping him confined for centuries seemed an inadequate solution, particularly if your Sleepy Sickness theory proved correct. Dream's captivity appeared to be impacting humanity as profoundly as it was affecting him, even after a hundred years had passed.
You rubbed your temples and exhaled heavily, feeling emotionally drained. It occurred to you that you might be the first in ages to show Dream a glimmer of humanity's better nature. Roderick Burgess's folly was glaringly evident, a man whose delusions of grandeur far outstripped his mortal limitations. He had recklessly dabbled in forces beyond his understanding, attempting to outwit Death herself. What Dream truly needed was a ray of authentic compassion, yet he remained ensnared in a relentless cycle of hollow promises and mounting demands, with no end in sight.
You were no exception to this, it seemed. The phrase "The end justifies the means" echoed in your mind, but the more you tried to rationalize your actions, the more your conscience rebelled, leaving you with a growing sense of wrongness.
As your cab idled in rush hour traffic, you peered out the window at the setting sun. Your hand rested on your bag, the outline of your sketchbook—filled with unrealized ideas—palpable beneath the fabric. Your mind wandered to your father, his strength and bravery now overshadowed by his fragility and mortality. Then, your thoughts returned to Dream, a being of incredible power and divinity, enduring years of unjust cruelty imposed by an evil man's whim.
A solitary tear escaped your eye, but you quickly wiped it away. What had become of your life's purpose and direction?
As the cab inched closer to the Burgess mansion, the answer to your mental question remained frustratingly elusive.
Seated on one of the leather couches, you sip from a small glass of liquor while observing the taxidermied lion before you. Its perpetual, silent snarl created an eerie atmosphere, mirrored by the other preserved animals throughout the manor. Whether frozen in lifelike poses or standing rigidly, their lifeless eyes seemed to track your every movement. It was unsettling, and you shuddered at the thought of their spirits lingering nearby.
Those who took pleasure in hunting animals for sport, displaying them as trophies or profiting from their deaths, deserved the severest punishment the universe could devise.
May Lucifer show no mercy to their vile and corrupted souls.
As you savored your drink, the sound of footsteps echoed from the corridor, accompanied by Paul's familiar voice graciously bidding farewell to departing guests. As soon as he entered the lounge, he halted in his tracks, his eyes meeting yours and scanning your seated form as if you were an unexpected apparition.
To break the awkward silence threatening to descend between you, you greeted him with a smile, suppressing the nervousness that bubbled up inside you again. "Good evening, Mr. McGuire."
The man's eyes softened. "Good evening, Miss Y/L/N. It's a pleasure to see you."
Had he thought you had vanished without a trace? That you had deserted your position and responsibilities at the manor, leaving no explanation behind?
"You're quite the early bird. When I woke up this morning, you had already flown the coop. I was curious about when you'd return."
Evidently, that was his assumption.
"I planned to visit my father," you elucidated. "Given how irritating morning traffic can be, I thought an early start would be more efficient."
Paul nodded and lowered himself onto the couch across from you. His expression revealed a combination of guilt and concern, clearly troubled by your recent exposure to their secret and the unusual task his husband had thrust upon you.
After a moment of contemplation, Mr. McGuire let out a heavy sigh, releasing his pent-up tension. "How are you holding up after last night? I want you to know that I tried to dissuade Alex from involving you in our family affairs. I sincerely apologize for the situation in which he's placed you."
You downed your glass in one gulp, relishing the bitter taste of the small amount of whiskey you could tolerate. "Actually, I was the one who got myself involved."
"Of course, you couldn't have known. How could you possibly have?"
Certainly. How could you have imagined they were confining a supernatural entity, essentially a divine being, in what amounted to a glorified snow globe since the early 20th century?
"Even so, Mr. McGuire, you shouldn't feel responsible for this. I pried into a matter that didn't concern me. If anyone's at fault, it's me."
You felt conflicted about uncovering Dream's truth. On one hand, you longed to be free from the guilt weighing heavily on your conscience. On the other, you couldn't shake the memory of his entrancing eyes and the lasting impact his essence had left on you.
"Alex shouldn't have put you in this position. You see, he's been fixated on Dream ever since he failed to convince him of our good intentions, that we'd free him if he only asked for it."
‘If he only asked for it’?
Your fingers absently toyed with the glass as you turned it in your hands. "It's hard to believe he would voluntarily choose to spend another hundred years in captivity," you observed.
“Naturally.”
"What exactly does Mr. Burgess have in mind?"
It seemed implausible that after more than a century, Dream of the Endless would suddenly surrender to his captor's conditions or implore for liberation.
"What he said last night is true; he genuinely wants to set Dream free. But Alex is afraid, Miss Y/LN, and we can't fault him for that."
"I understand, I truly do. But I have to ask, why me? How can I possibly convince Dream when you've been unsuccessful for years?"
Were they expecting you to deceive him, to make promises you knew you couldn't fulfill?
"One thing we've observed about you, Miss Y/LN, is your empathy. You're compassionate, attentive, and always seem to find the right words."
Those words might come back to curse you, it seemed.
"Though I still have reservations about sending you down there, you're giving Alex hope. If you could... well, consider it... it would mean a great deal to him."
You set the glass on the coffee table and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. "You realize this is terribly wrong, don't you? That you can't keep him imprisoned in there indefinitely?"
Paul lowered his gaze to his hands, his voice soft but resolute. "Yes."
"And you also know there's no guarantee he'll trust me or even speak to me. Everything might remain unchanged, and you'll gain nothing but wasted time and money."
His lips pressed into a thin line. "I do. But something shifted last night, I'm certain. The way he looked at you... I can't quite explain it, but it was different."
At that moment, you discerned the underlying emotion in Paul's expression: depletion. He, like you, had started as a simple employee at the manor, nurturing the gardens as his bond with the Magus's son deepened over time. Despite being oblivious to the consequences of marrying Alex Burgess, Paul had committed himself to standing by his love, adopting his partner's burdens as if they were his own.
Paul was inundated with fatigue, worry, and emotional weariness. Alex's illness forced him to bed for most of the day, leaving Paul to manage all household and personal obligations. As if this weren't arduous enough, Paul had to watch helplessly as his beloved partner's health deteriorated day by day.
"You're a good man, Mr. McGuire," you told him with genuine sincerity. "You love your husband deeply, and I'm certain watching him suffer is tearing you apart. I understand your struggle, which is why..." You paused, your heart pounding as you came to terms with your decision. "That's why I've decided to give this a try."
The die was cast now.
Paul's gaze snapped back to you, his expression a mix of surprise and concern. He studied your face intently, the silence stretching between you. A wave of discomfort engulfed you, your chest tightening with both alcohol-induced warmth and tremendous loathe for yourself.
“You are…? Really?”
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. "To be honest, my father's not doing very well. There's a promising experimental treatment that could potentially aid his recovery, but its cost is exorbitant. Far exceeding my current financial means."
His smile held a touch of understanding. "So you're doing this for your father."
You felt wretched, tainted, almost villainous. "I'm left with no other choice at my disposal. Am I?"
"Please understand that you can opt out at any time," he assured. "If you decide you no longer wish to continue, we won't hold it against you, I promise."
Paul's reassurances and kind words couldn't shake off the gnawing remorse you were experiencing. The knot in your stomach only grew tighter, and you knew your inner turmoil would only intensify, threatening to consume you entirely—swallowing you whole and potentially damning your soul to Hell.
You immersed yourself in work, tackling an array of tasks with deep focus. From scrubbing every corner to manicuring the garden and buffing ornaments to a shine, you surpassed your usual workload. Your colleagues didn't object; instead, they used your diligence as an opportunity to indulge in brief respites, savoring a cigarette in secluded spots or enjoying leisurely walks outdoors.
You were indifferent. You craved distraction, seeking any activity that could occupy your thoughts and prevent them from straying into uncomfortable territory. You wanted to temporarily forget the looming obligation ahead, the impending humiliation of an Endless, exploiting him for personal gain while contradicting your own stance.
Time seemed to slip away, and before you knew it, another day had vanished. Now you found yourself facing the basement door, a cleverly concealed entrance that blended seamlessly with the wall, reminiscent of a portal to another realm. In a sense, it was just that, though the reality that lay beneath was far from the enchanting worlds of storybooks.
Paul handed you a small, unlabeled jar of pills. "These are stimulants," he explained. "Our guards have been taking them for over a century. It's crucial never to fall asleep or appear tired in Dream's presence. He might be able to breach your defenses and manipulate your mind."
"I thought he was bound to the circle," you said. "That he no longer retained any of his powers."
"It's been said that even with all these precautions, you can't truly strip away all his power. That's why he's under constant surveillance."
Interesting, you mused.
"Would you like me to accompany you?" Paul asked, still apprehensive about what they had persuaded you to do. "The guards have been informed and will be there if you need assistance."
While the guards you had encountered didn't inspire confidence in their ability to provide safety, you didn't perceive any immediate threat that would necessitate their presence.
You offered a tentative smile. "I've got this, Mr. McGuire. Thank you."
Reluctantly, he decided to trust you enough to let you descend alone. "Good luck, Miss Y/L/N. Have a good night," he said. "And please, take one of those tablets as a safety measure."
As Paul retreated, passing the antique showcases filled with urns, statues, and ancient armor, you waited for him to disappear from sight. Once he was gone, you slipped the jar of pills into your pocket, leaving it untouched. Sleep already evaded you without added stimulants, there was no need to complicate matters further for a non-issue.
As you gently eased open the narrow door, its hinges emitted a soft creak, and a chilly draft from below immediately caressed your skin. Though you'd managed to don a long jacket shielding your arms and legs, time constraints had prevented you from changing into more suitable attire.
Opting for the stairs iinstead of using the elevator, you carefully descended, mindful of your heels on the steep steps. As you reached the cellar floor and passed through the open gates, you felt your breath catch in your throat for the second time. There sat Dream, unchanged from your first meeting—his head lowered, arms wrapped around his bent knees. His posture spoke volumes, a paradoxical mix of resignation and nobility, defeat intertwined with an unbreakable spirit.
Your stomach churned with anxiety, and emotion constricted your throat. Sensing your arrival, he lifted his gaze, eyes steady and unblinking.
You found yourself unable to move closer, as if an invisible force held you in place. He left you awestruck, captured by an inexplicable allure that defied human comprehension.
"Did you come to speak to that old Dracula?"
A female voice from the table to your left caught your attention, breaking your momentary trance and causing you to turn your head. Two uniformed guards sat there, shielding their faces with reading material. You recognized them from before—the woman with her sturdy build, tight bun, and pink lipstick, and the man with his puffy cheeks and short, wavy hair.
You thoroughly disliked them, but your aversion to them stemmed primarily from an intuitive feeling you couldn't quite articulate.
You furrowed your brow, perplexed. "Dracula...?"
She shrugged dismissively and resumed reading her magazine, crossing her legs and shifting in her chair. Both guards exuded an air of utter apathy, their expressions impassive and their body language showing a clear desire to be elsewhere.
Dream remained motionless, his eyes fixed intently on you. Confronting a caged entity was daunting enough, but the presence of the two guards—potentially eavesdropping and later gossiping about your conversation—heightened your mounting displeasure. The weight of what you had agreed to do pressed heavily upon your chest.
The situation called for confidentiality. To have a meaningful conversation with Dream, you needed to devise a way to make the guards leave.
Without the authority to dismiss them outright, you opted for a diplomatic approach. "I'd appreciate some privacy. Would you mind giving us a moment alone, please?" you said, your tone both respectful and firm.
As expected, the guards stared at you as if you'd lost your mind. "Not a chance, Missy," the man retorted. "We're on watch duty, can't leave our post."
You muttered a curse under your breath. "Look, I can't do this with you here. Please, just give me a few minutes with him. Unless, of course, you'd prefer I inform Mr. Burgess that I couldn't complete his request because you interfered?"
With those words, you had played your trump card.
The guards exchanged a wordless glance. The woman discarded her magazine on the table, while her colleague tucked the newspaper under his arm and pushed back his chair. As the female guard approached, her eyes narrowed with suspicion. You met her scrutinizing stare head-on, refusing to break eye contact in this silent battle of wills.
Finally, she complied. "All right, just don't do anything stupid."
You noticed her hand brushing along the gun secured into the holster, a subtle admonishment to let you know they were not playing games and wouldn't even hesitate to use it.
“As stupid as calling him ‘Dracula’?”
The words escaped your lips before you could stop them. The woman's expression soured, her face contorting into a scowl as she retreated. "We'll be upstairs if you need us," she muttered, clearly displeased.
You struggled to suppress a satisfied smirk as her face flushed crimson. "Yes, Ma'am."
The sound of their heavy footsteps faded as they ascended the stairs, followed by the creak of the door opening. They left it slightly ajar, remaining vigilant and prepared to intervene if necessary.
With your objective accomplished, it was time to face the real ordeal: confronting Dream himself. As you turned around, you noticed his position had shifted slightly, causing your mouth to go dry.
For a moment, you thought you glimpsed a slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. However, as you made your way across the suspended bridge and stepped onto the painted ground within the binding circle, his face resumed its familiar expression, stern and wary.
Your initial confidence wavered as you found yourself alone with him in the basement. It became the most intimidating challenge you'd ever faced, struggling to maintain composure and resist the temptation to let your gaze wander. Despite his discreet efforts to preserve his modesty, the presence of this strikingly attractive, unclothed man before you was having an undeniable impact on your nerves.
At the same time, you couldn't suppress your indignation. They had reduced him to such a humiliating state, naked and vulnerable, like an object on display. His dignity had been stripped away, leaving him exposed to the prying eyes of anyone who entered.
Your throat constricted, making it difficult to breathe. "Hello, Dream," you whispered. "I'm Y/N Y/LN. I'd say it's a pleasure to meet you, but these circumstances are far from ideal."
Of course, he remained silent, so you continued. "I owe you an apology. I'm yet another mortal intruding upon you, attempting to make you speak, to negotiate. To convince you I mean no harm."
Yet, there he sat, physically unblemished, but emotionally ravaged by a century of solitude.
"How many times have they promised to release you?"
Dream turned away, his throat visibly constricting. His quietness conveyed more than any words could, communicating all you needed to know without a sound.
It broke your heart. "I wish I could tell you I'm different, that they forced me into this. But the truth is, Dream... they're paying me to interact with you. I willingly accepted."
As you voiced your admission, you suddenly felt nauseous. The Endless remained impassive, his eyes on the ground, seemingly absorbed in quiet reflection as he listened.
You deeply wished for him to grasp your motives, to understand the regrettable nature of your actions. You longed for his freedom, but you felt trapped with the figurative ropes of circumstance cutting into your pride. "My father is gravely ill. The only treatment that could save his life is beyond my financial means. Without it, he won't survive."
Alex Burgess had orchestrated the situation to his advantage. The crucial question now was: what stance were you prepared to take?
Dream's penetrating blue gaze returned to you, its intensity rooting you to the spot once more. Your pulse quickened, your extremities tingled, and your conscience screamed in protest. Proceeding would make you complicit in his exploitation, further compromising his already tarnished dignity for your personal interest.
The ends don't justify the means.
You couldn't do this; it would turn you into a heartless monster.
Fueled by a newfound courage, your hands balled into fists. The tension in your palms caused your wrist tendons to strain painfully.
With a resigned sigh, you made your decision. "To hell with it. Don't speak," you urged. "No matter what happens, don't say a word."
Dream's stern expression melted, giving way to surprise and bewilderment at your unexpected suggestion. You flashed him the warmest, most genuine smile you'd ever given anyone. "I'll create a diversion for you," you said softly. "I'll inform them that you're receptive and starting to trust me. If I can alleviate their concerns, I might be able to persuade them to set you free. Just don't speak, ever. Not even to me."
The situation presented an opportunity. Alex Burgess needed your cooperation with the Endless just as much as you required his financial support. By leveraging this mutual dependence, you might be able to negotiate a way to help Dream regain his freedom and autonomy, ultimately escaping his magical imprisonment.
At the very least, you were determined to make this plan succeed at all costs.
"I'm truly sorry. I'm only human, and if I were in your position, I probably wouldn't trust me either. I know you've likely heard this before, but I promise to do everything in my power to help you."
His countenance transformed, and his formerly rigid stance noticeably relaxed.
"You've been confined in this prison for far too long. Allow me to offer you some companionship in the meantime. No expectations, no demands… just me, as I am. I'd like to be a friend to you, if you'll permit it."
You wondered if your request was too ambitious. Dream was an immortal being of immense power, far beyond anything that could ever be written in a book. Given his extensive history of enduring broken promises and betrayals, it seemed unlikely that he would trust, and much less befriend, a mere mortal like yourself.
Mirroring your previous visit to the cellar, you pressed your palm against the glass, channeling your emotions through this simple act while keeping your smile unchanged. Dream observed you silently, but his eyes now reflected a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of swirling lights.
End notes: In this chapter, I wanted to highlight Reader's inner conflict. I also have a huge respect for Paul, as he totally seems like a sweetheart in the show and I can see him taking us under his wing. Alex, however, is quite a different story. In the Netflix adaptation, he is a lot better than his father and it is clear he truly felt bad for Morpheus and wanted to set him free. However, you can't just promise someone that they can trust you and you will let them go, only to kill their freaking raven a moment later. Like yo, your father gave you the rifle, he told you to get rid of the bird, but you were the one pulling the trigger, it was your choice. Come on man.
#sorrynotsorrystillsaltyforjessamy
It may take me two more chapters before reaching the part of the escape. Since I have to cover a couple months more of staying in the house, you'll see a lot of breaks between parts and time jumps, because I have to leave out a bunch of unimportant and irrelevant descriptions/dialogues (don't want to get boring, I need to get to the juicy part y'all).
And I'm sorry, you may need to get used to long chapters from me... 😅

The first fill I did for my BTHB card was: Mouth Stitched Shut!
TWs:
Description of injuries
Blood
Referenced PTSD symptoms
Someone (he was sure he knew who) had stitched it closed with some kind of rough spun black cord. Nine neat X’s all the way across, with more blood dried all around it, and dark bruises around each of the punctures.
There was a gagging noise from beside him as Beau looked Caleb over, and a horrified gasp from Jester on his other side. He turned, looking them both in the eye to make sure they would follow, then made his way to the happy room. He laid Caleb on the couch as gently as he could, worried about any unseen injuries he might have hidden under the tattered clothes.
“Beau, get Caduceus… Jester, grab the healers kit from the kitchen, would you?”
They ran off, Beau towards the garden and Jester back down the stairs, as Fjord got Caleb as comfortable as he could. He pulled the blanket off the back of the couch, draping it over Caleb’s shivering form, and tucked his messy hair back behind his ears. Heat seemed to radiate off his skin, and Fjord worried about the possibility of infection. He felt a tug in his chest, a tight sort of pain at the sight of Caleb lying like this. They had been through a lot together, literal death a few times… but there was something particularly difficult about seeing just how much he had been through alone. He hadn’t had any of them to help, no one to lean on or turn to… they had failed him.

Y'all want something soft and random? I wrote this after reading a LOT of Song of Achilles. There is no context, enjoy!
-------------
"What should I say instead?" Caleb asked, the tone of his voice that with which he read poetry "Only tell me dear captain, and I will say it"
Fjord knew he was being teased, and decided the best response would be the least anticipated: play along. He leaned in, catching Caleb's fine chin and tilting his face upwards just a bit
"You should tell me just what you want, and know that I will provide it"
Caleb's cheeks went red, but Fjord couldn't miss the way his pupils dilated at the same time.
"Und... if I want something you would not give?"
Ah, the Zemnian was breaking through.
"Such a thing doesn't exist" he dropped his voice low, leaning farther in so that there was barely any space between them "I would burn the world and fight the Raven Queen herself if you asked it"
He felt more than heard the sharp intake of breath before Caleb continued, his voice breathy
"And... if all I asked for was a kiss?"
"You don't even need to ask"

Hi! I hate that Leahy’s throwaway comment got stuck in my head but uuuhh, any thoughts about SCP-106 and Reid…?
That's Leahy's superpower, he does or says something that sticks in your head whether you like it or not
I feel like SCP-106 wants to fuck Reid, simply because that's the kind of creepy possessive guy he is, but he's also wary of her. He knows she could fuck him up with a simple touch, and for that reason he can't really fuck her. Oh but he would love to try

Small Details in The Raven Boys That I Had Forgotten
In honor of my re-read of The Raven Boys, here is my list of small details in the book that I had forgotten about (with page numbers):
1. “Coincidence? I think not.”
2. Blue taught penmanship to 3rd graders, made wreaths for the Society for Ladies of Perpetual Health, walked the dogs of wealthy people, and put new plants in flower beds for elderly women on the side (57)
3. Nino’s is where the most popular and annoying Raven boys hang out (57)
4. Whelk’s sleep schedule depended on the energy of the ley line (97)
5. The cover of Gansey’s journal feels like the bark of the beech tree in the backyard of 300 Fox Way that Blue loves (102)
6. Cats live in 300 Fox Way and they have a dedicated Cat Room (among other things) (104)
7. Persephone had a “lover or a husband who was dead or overseas” (106)
8. Noah’s first “Don’t throw it away” to Gansey (165) and second one to Adam (371)
9. Despite having had lessons, Gansey is terrible at flying helicopters (199)
10. Gansey’s mother is obsessed with collecting glassware and her collection is insured for more than his father (200)
11. “But [Blue] hadn’t gotten out of bed in the morning expecting to encounter a place where possibly time didn’t work” (221)
12. Both Gansey and Ronan being very jealous of the Blue x Adam relationship throughout all of chapter 23
13. Gansey thought he heard Noah’s voice in Cabeswater the first time they were there (222)
14. Gansey to Ronan when he said that they had to be back in 3 hours to feed Chainsaw: “This is precisely why I didn’t want to have a baby with you.” (239)
15. Noah “threw up” when the gangsey found his car the first time and Gansey hates the word “puking” (254)
16. Blue took note of Gansey’s “impressive arm muscles” and the fact that he strides places instead of walking (263-264)
17. Gansey called Blue “Eggplant” when she wore a purple dress (265)
18. Gansey had individual boxes full of things related to his search that he wanted to keep/ museums wouldn’t take from each state/country he had been to (303)
19. Maura hated collecting things, so anything that isn’t used gets given away ASAP (320)
20. In the middle of Blue (kind of) arguing with Maura about her father, Gansey asked Adam, “His name wasn’t really Butternut, was it?” (332)
21. The only reservation Whelk had about killing Adam for the ritual was that he turned his homework in on time (346)
22. After fighting with Adam, Gansey chucked his shoes off of his feet a significant distance and said only “yee haw” (360)
23. When Ronan saw Gansey laying down on his bed and talking to Blue standing above him, he said “If you spit, Blue, it would land right in his eye.” (362)
24. Blue had colored feathers and lace handing from her ceiling fan (375)
25. She also copied a poem onto her ceiling (377)
#This was honestly so fun to do#I may make this list for every book in the series#the raven boys#the raven cycle#maggie stiefvater#this woman is an artist yall#blue sargent#richard gansey#ronan lynch#adam parrish#noah czerny#maura sargent#book reread#the show has to include these details#please
