I am really into Chinese bl (danmei). Most danmei are like shounen with the homoerotic undertones, except the sexual tension actually gets paid off!!!

And I say “like shounen” because, unlike Japanese BL, there’s a lot more emphasis on plot when it comes to danmei. Of course, there are also danmei focusing on romance, but the best ones have complex plots you don’t really find in shounen ai/yaoi.

Naming a few mainstream danmei, to start:

Heaven Official’s Blessing = fallen god reascends for the third time and befriends a demon king. Together, they get to the bottom of a lot of scandals in the heavenly court

The Husky and His White Cat Shizun = evil emperor is reborn to the year he was still a teen and is yet to do any evil stuff and once again has to face his loathed master (shizun) and obey him.

Little Mushroom = sentient mushroom takes over dead human body and infiltrates the human base to retrieve his stolen spore

The Earth is Online = humanity is pulled into a death game

Sha Po Lang = ancient industrial Chinese setting (steampunk???) about a prince and his Yifu + war and stuff

Fourth Perspective = Sci-fi where characters have “logic chains” that grant them random abilities (that may or may not be useful), but with limits. Main character’s logic chain allows him to see other people’s “logic factors”

I Became a God in a Horror Game = Guy who’s obsessed with money gets pulled into a death game and comes out victorious every time (his driving force is money). Very mindblowing arcs and well-written characters

Mermaid Effect = guy picks up “fish” on the beach and keeps it as a pet, but then it turned out to be a biological weapon

Si Tian Guan = guy who died in political drama gets reborn to the year before it all started and vows to not repeat the mistakes of the past and also protect the person most important to him. This one made me cry a lot that I still couldn’t finish it...

It’s like… these stories just happen to have gay protagonists. The characters being gay and in love aren’t their main selling points. They actually have stories to tell outside the romance and the fucking (which is often censored coz, yknow, China) and also explore a variety of deep themes, and that just makes them more interesting to me

we had this game that looked super unique, everybody loved it, it won tons of awards

and then it barely got any marketing, feels like it only got as popular as it did thanks to word of mouth and the initial shadow drop, was deemed a "failure" despite selling what many companies would consider a success back in the day, (because it didnt sell call of duty numbers, probably.) and then its studio got shut down

the studio was just starting to spread its wings, start making shit that could inspire their peers, other devs, to start making different things and experiment

and they fucking killed them

i mean, maybe they'll make their own studio, i've heard something like that's happened a couple times with the yooka-laylee devs and sonic mania's dev team

but i dunno

as much as i love games like spider-man and god of war (and i mean literally just those two, like, anything else sony does aside from ratchet and clank im not into) i wish they didnt worry so much about modelling photorealism

the obsession with stuff like that is what's made game development so expensive and unsustainable at this rate

i know this is tumblr so the first reaction im gonna get to saying something like "i like spider-man and god of war" at least in my circle is "GOOD GLAD THAT IT'S BECOMING UNSUSTAINABLE FUCK THEM" but like. i actually like what these games had to say and what they brought to the table.

How I feel about this character

Emily had a very big role to fill as the playable protagonist of dishonored 2.

From my perspective Female protagonists in sequels tend to be mocked and ridiculed, especially if they replacing the original male protagonist from the first game. Some examples include Athena from Ace attorney 5, and Abby from TLOU2 (though Abby is a special case separate from the argument). Female protagonists tend to get shit unless they fall under two categories. A) They're the protag of a new game (Aloy from Horizon) or B) The female protagonist started as an NPC before being Playable (Ellie from TLOU).

Emily falls under the second category, so the community was already familiar with her. Still didn't completely block her from criticism from all the gamer bros™️ who cannot stand playing as anything but as a cis white male bc God forbid they do otherwise.

I will literally defend any female protagonists with my life. Which is why she became my favourite character. Sure. I like mainstream shit. But I like the underrated shit even better.

I also think Optimistic protagonists tend to be less favored compared to their emo-ass counterparts and I don't know who hurt yall but can we please let a little hope into our lives-

I.. don't consume a lot of media regularly outside of video games so this is gonna be a little wonky, but I'm gonna give it a shot regardless. Will maybe throw in some extras or honorable mentions cause it is hard to narrow each category down to just one. Lessgo!

TV Show - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

It's kinda a basic pick, but I can't help that the show is just good. There's also maybe just a touch of nostalgia talking. One of my first anime ever and I love returning to it to rewatch every few years. Super solid story and characters and the themes and philosophy of the show are so compelling. There's a reason almost everyone recommended this as a "starter" anime for such a long time. Honorable mentions to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Lost (yes I know it's ass leave me alone), and The Witcher.

Movie - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

I know this might be cheating a little but honestly you can't have one without the rest. If I absolutely had to pick one of the three, it'd be Two Towers. And maybe it's the nostalgia talking again, but it feels like they just don't make em like this anymore. Not flawless masterpieces by any means but just incredibly well constructed movies with a compelling plot and good characters. And the amount of artistry that went into the costume designs and the sets is so amazing. Marvel movies could never. It just helps make the trilogy timeless.

Album? - Uhhhh....

I used to listen to music more when I was younger but it was all like.. Christian rock. Then I stopped being religious and switched to almost exclusively listening to video game music. I am doing my best to get back into more contemporary and mainstream music, but I kinda consume it wrong lmao. I kinda just make playlists for my OCs and cherrypick individual songs I randomly find and don't really listen to songs in the context of a full album. As a result I don't really have a favorite album, so here's just two music recommendations I guess. First, the FTL soundtrack is just fantastically vibey and atmospheric and I return to it whenever I just need some ambient sound. And second, I've been getting into the band Good Kid. They have some solid covers and originals and I really like their stuff. It vaguely reminds me of some of the bands I listened to when I was younger but without all the religious stuff

Game - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

What can I say? It's peak. From the story, to the characters, to the dungeons, to the items, to the atmosphere, to the soundtrack. Absolute peak Zelda. OoT walked so MM could soar. The genius design of the three day cycle has yet to be recaptured by any game I have played since. The constant building pressure as you run out of time, the bountiful side quests, memorizing important item locations and everyone's routines to optimize your loop and subsequent playthroughs. Superb. It's just amazing that this game exists as it does, especially considering its troubled development. It really deserves more love and its a shame that the 3ds remake wasn't as faithful as it should've been. Honorable mentions to Guilty Gear: Strive for reigniting my current passion for fighting games and Pseudoregalia for being the best 3d platformer I have ever played oh my god please go play it.

It had been what had carried Trapper through the war, and what had carried Hawkeye the rest of the way once Trapper had gone.

“How many guys we talking about?” Trapper asked, sluggish mind only clear because Hawkeye had just drained his balls a half hour ago.

Hawkeye twisted around. He rested his chin on Trapper’s sternum and looked up at him. “Two wouldn’t be that much different from the time you and me and Ollie… you remember?”

“As if I could forget,” Trapper sighed happily. “We should call him.”

She couldn’t know how it was only Trapper who’d kept him anchored to the shore - Trapper’s arms wrapped tight around him while he sobbed, lest he drifted out into some dark ocean, like Henry… 

No, Margaret couldn’t have known all that. But she definitely knew something and, Hawkeye thought, it would be nice to finally confirm what had existed between himself and Trapper. Maybe it would feel less like a faraway dream if he did. 

“You knew about that?”

“Of course I did,” Margaret’s voice dropped low and bitter and it switched off the reel of memories of Trapper crackling through his mind, “I knew about everything.”

Hawkeye seemed to get a little smaller at that. His shoulders drooped further than she thought was possible - it seemed he did have some shame after all. 

“You don’t think I would do anything about it do you?” 

“Margaret, Major Margaret. You’re so orderly. It’s not the kind of thing that you-”

“You can’t just say ‘Major Margaret’, it’s Major Margaret Houlihan, or Major Houlihan. Or Major.”

“Thanks for proving my point. You’re a stickler for army rules, and in the army it’s more acceptable to kill your fellow man than to… ” love your fellow man, he trailed off and sunk further. Any lower and he would be resting his upper half on the table, she thought.

Trapper glances nervously at Frank, but he seems to be sleeping soundly, so Trapper says in a loud whisper: “Start from the beginning.”

“They think I’m a military man do they–”

“They do not. I’m surprised you keep walking right in their trap, what with how hard they’re pulling your leg.”

“They wouldn’t let up. Not for an hour in the mess tent.”

“They would if you’d stop being so obvious ‘bout it botherin’ you.”

“That’s not enough, Trap.”

Trapper looks unconvinced.

“When has that ever been enough?” Hawkeye smirks. “We need to bother them right back.”

“We.” Trapper rolls his eyes, even though by default he’s always on board with whatever loony idea Hawkeye’s come up with. Riling up the Majors was as good a morale boost as anything else, and Hawkeye’s delighted grin is a nice bonus. “What did ya have in mind?” 

“They’re not gonna let this up until we force them to. Hot Lips has got it in her head that she can get under my skin like this.”

“And she’d be right about that.” Trapper nods. “How do we force them?”

“By performing an act of such degeneracy, in their eyes, that they’re forced to give up any and all facade of–”

“Respect for you.”

The state of horror YouTube I so fucking atrocious. I'm slowly falling out of love with it.

Just every new iteration, every new wave of internet/analog/digital horror feels more and more like a cheaper mockery. People who enjoyed tge first wave trying to get on the fun slowly melted away into people just wanting to do anything to fit into the genre. You cannot tell anymore if a series existence originates from an idea or chasing a fad.

I would love to say that bitch urban spook was the culmination of if and not lie but no, he was just an omen of what's to come. Now it feels in the onslaught of new series it is rarer and rarer that you see something evocative, it seems like everyone gets more scared by association. As if previous series trained us into fearing the style and foregoing the actual content.

One of the semi-recent examples of something just going viral and people swarming around it without giving it much consideration (and to be clear, even I think this is a good series, one of the better ones in this mess, has some good ideas etc. I'm a hater but like gotta appreciate the good too) is the "Boiled one phenomenon" I think that's what it's called, no time to check, I'm fighting with sleep meds. It's just a well crafted image, one, one fucking image that's pasted over and over. I'd love to love the series becouse it has some great ideas but god fucking damn it, every time I try thinking about it that one fuck-ass image comes to mind where there's just a normal bloke on the bed a small jpg of the boiled one in the corner and some ominous text somewhere on the screen. Are we fucking scared of Arial now? My mans in the cuck window looking at a coma it caused and just projecting text onto a video tape (tape? I think). Amazing outstanding glorious. Again that's one of the better series that still suffers the same redundancy. Most series will just flash you an image or a short video qnd add some text without much thought. "There I no time" there is no time my ass those are found tapes, from like 40 years ago, people who filmed it and lived are asking to speak to a manager right about now, by all means they had time. This is also assuming that they are trying to sell it off as a found footage, please believe this is real kinda content qnd I'm trying to join in and be "omg this is so real I wonder what had happened" but it just takes it out of immersion. I know not all series are like this but come on, so much of it is that.

If not the previous case it's just a twist on a show or a game or a series and it just makes it oh so spooky by slaping on an analogue filter or pixelation and adding music to it and you've baked the cake. Thanks. It's starting to be no better that mainstream horror movies that throw some jumpscares at you and conduct when you're scared with a fucking violin.

We are truelly entering the "it's this thing but it had hyper realistic blood, qnd it splattered everywhere and those hyperrealistic eyes and btw this is blorbo the killer" era of internet horror. I get it it happens to everything. Oversaturation of a genre will always happen and when a trend is started, if allowed to live long enough, will flanderised itself into oblivion.

Day 295: Modern Crisis

I want to share my thoughts and opinions on what I believe we are currently living through. I believe the time period we are experiencing could be classified as a modern crisis. Not what you would initially believe. I am not going to talk about rising inflation, the division of social classes, the housing crises or any other mainstream specific topics related to politics or economy. I want to discuss a speculative issue that is individually inflicted. I will not share my guess on the reason nor the solution since I neither have the knowledge nor evidence to make a such bold claims. I am simply sharing my experiences and my observations. These observations derived not from proof or evidence, but rather from feeling and experience. These feelings I believe we all feel individually. I believe we are in a modern crisis where people do not know what to do with their lives.

We all have this looming feeling that our lives are not satisfying. We are not achieving our potential. We feel lost and purposeless. We do not know what we are living for. We live in the so called free world. We live in rich and prosperous countries where we are all part of the global one percent. A place where we don't have to worry about our next meal or our safety. Where we can be anything we want to be and live out our passions. We we can indulge in style, art, decor, expression and customization of our own individual creativities. We can find careers that satisfy our personal passions without risking our safety or survivability. We have the luxury of free time and to participate in any hobby we desire after work and on weekends. We have technology and resources thanks to globalization, so the range and possibilities of our hobbies and how we spend our free time is limitless. Sports, restaurants, bars, art, books, movies, games, media, events, parks. We have so much free time in our lives to do whatever we please. So why are we depressed. Why do we commit suicide. Why do we feel lost? Why do we act self destructive? Why are we miserable? Why in gods green earth do we waste our free time? With all our possibilities and resources, why are we so negative and act against our best interests?

We don't find fulfilling jobs? We hate what we do and all want to be entrepreneurs.?We want to invest, build a business, create media, find loop holes, scam. We want to get money from means other than a job. Why do we dislike jobs? We are told we can get any job we want. We are told to get a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. We are told to do what we love and money will follow. So why do we all get jobs we dislike and then complain? Why do we sit on our phones scrolling through low quality media with all our free time? We have so much to see, explore, experience, live, learn, expand. The media is not even personalized as we think. We all watch the same big topics from our feeds. Joe Rogan, Andrew Tate, David Goggings, n-word memes. We also get similar political and economical content. How difficult it is to buy a house, too many immigrants, how western and European countries are exploiting poorer countries, how some LGBTQ allies have lost their values. Most of this knowledge we do not even want to watch. Since our feeds are supposed to be individualized, we believe the stuff we see is designed for us and thus we believe it and internalize these opinions. I overheard someone talking of the Wim Hof breathing method. I thought to myself, wow I just learned about that as well just this past month. There are many instances of this where I thought I was receiving individualized content but hear the same niche specific information from a friend. We start believing the content we see and internalizing their opinions and beliefs slowly and subconsciously. For instance, I recently found myself looking down on LGBTQ allies. Thinking they are weak and lost. Then I remembered that I don't hate anyone. I have always shown kindness and acceptance my entire life. Why now do I show resentment. Why now do I possess a negative outlook on a certain group. This was never my opinion to begin with but rather one that was given to me. We see the most radical side in media it is never the average or normal. I think we forget that sometimes since we see the radical so often. Why do we forget our hobbies and indulge in mindless media that we know is destructive to us? Why do we waste our valuable free time doing things we know we shouldn't? Why don't we spend it on things that are beneficial, or at least on things we actually enjoy?

In the past, people had a good motivator and thus a purpose. Survive, escape poverty or escape oppression. Wars are fought for freedom or glory for ones people. Right now, we already have freedom and don't desire glory. I claim we actually do desire glory but we don't know what form. Perhaps creating a successful business or getting a really good job. That is our way to accomplish something great. On a side note, why do we even want glory? Why can't we be grateful with what we have and just live peacefully? Is this just part of human nature?
