I don't remember where I saw the argument that the reason the raven tail bit couldn't be resolved in it's own arc was because team natsu wasn't involved but I keep thinking about it and

In a way they're right, but literally only because I strongly, strongly believe Ivan & Raven Tail was resolved the way it was because Mashima just wanted to close that chapter and move on, as he could not figure out how to write team natsu into that plot. (assumption.)

He could absolutely have written team natsu into that plot. Just in a way that's more of them being intrusive rather then have them already be involved.

This Could Have Been A Spinoff Series, if not a separate arc, if they really couldn't be in the plot.

Lately especially I've been thinking they should have done some kind of raven tail revenge arc instead of the sun village arc (or yknow. putting it in between that & the gmg) It's painfully stupid to have such a big story be brushed off like that, especially after that kind of build up.

Ivan is one of the handful of antagonists that don't just show up in the same arc they're defeated in, and we haven't seen him since the grand magic games. And then it's new villain after new villain showing up and dying. Phoeey. Patooey.

Anyway I would love to make random concepts for this arc that currently only exists in my head but for now have this post that was so clearly written on melatonin.

I love Fairy Tail but I will never forgive it for throwing Ivan away so easily. He was a character with so much build up and literally no pay off. A couple of episodes where some of his goons beat up Fairy Tail members, mention the Lumen Histoire, and then he gets defeated and never returns? Barely - if not ever - mentioned again? Like, what?

Ivan Dreyar and Raven Tail should have gotten their own arc. The Grand Magic Games would have been their introduction, keep Laxus defeating them, but have them escape right before they can be arrested. This way, when the Raven Tail arc starts, the members are established and we know what Ivan is after.

An arc like this also could have answered some questions that are never addressed in the show: who was Makarov's wife/Ivan's mother? Who was/is Laxus' mother? What was Ivan and Laxus' relationship before he left?

I need answers, Mashima, I need them.

(yes, I also wanted a Raven Tail arc because that would have meant more Laxus screen-time, but that is besides the point).

It always felt like such a waste introducing raventail in this arc and then never seeing them again - they should have had their own arc!

1000% agree. Part of what doesn't work about them in grand magic games is we have no basis for how strong they are to begin with so this idea of them being defeated by Laxus really holds no weight at all. Even beyond that how they got utilized in the GMG was such a waste, I know Mashima wants to portray Ivan as pathetic but in the end it results in me not caring that Laxus defeats him and not even feeling like they were actually family ever to begin with.

I've said before we really needed more arcs pre timeskip just to pad things out a bit because the S-class exam happens way too early into the series. I think Raven tail happening right before the time skip and maybe even being an arc that leaves fans feeling angry and unfulfilled with Raven tail escaping in the end, would set up fantastically for their take down in GMG.

"But laxus wouldn't be there" we focus on Makarov and Ivan during the arc. We focus on the older members of fairy tail who would've been around when Ivan was part of it and how they react to seeing him again. Wakaba, Macao, Gildarts potentially (Several others in my rewrite would also be around his age.).

Part of what I don't like about Laxus beating Raven tail alone as well is it really just proves what his father did to him was correct. We get told Ivan implanted a lacrima in Laxus as a child and it's outright said to be horrible and monstrous. Yet Mashima then shows that Laxus has worth because "actually he's so strong he can beat his dad now". The better way to handle it would be Laxus learning the strength of relying on others and how he's more than just his physical strength. We could've had Makarov and Laxus potentially tag team taking down Ivan and it would've been far more emotional and fulfilling to me.

Raven tail is built up pretimeskip with Makarov sending Gajeel in to gather information and the culmination of that is so anticlimactic and infuriating. They get so wasted.

She's the one who has been having fun stealing the Ravens meat for a long time. I've been trying to capture her for about 3 years on my camera and finaly succeeded last Thurday during the snow storm when power was down.
