You can’t personalize a factory Les Paul unless you learn from ol’ Lester Polfuss himself. Les never played a stock anything. He was always fiddling.

And he owned a Fender Broadcaster that was given to him by Leo Fender. Leo Fender never stopped innovating or failing to innovate. He built “tools” that were meant to be played.

Don’t get “precious” about guitars. Buy some parts, throw your own together. Even if you fuck it up, you will at least have tried. Never be afraid to ask for help. The end result will be worth it.

My largest painting project yet - literally!

The display scenery from The Battle for the Throne box for Marvel Crisis Protocol (gifted to me early by the manufacturers).

I've never painted scenery before so this was an exercise in efficiency of scale - I can't use up all of my expensive miniature paint!

I started with a rattlecan base spray - purple and red-brown, with a narrow spray of teal for the lower half and a white zenithal dusting to finish.

It really informed how I built the colours back in - I had initially pictured something fully black and blue like the cave of wonders in Disney's Aladdin, but the progression from dark blue to purple to brown felt surprisingly easy to wrangle and strangely believable?!

Finished this Academy P-51A in 1/48. The box kit had all markings for USAAC in North Africa World War II. Since I already have an A-36 in those same markings, I decided to try something different with this one. Since I purchased the kit at the EAA Museum, I thought I would finish the kit like the museums XP-51. The kit doesn't really match the XP-51, but it's fine, it's for my own bookshelf.

I've always been a rattlecan man, and have been trying to figure for years about how to do painted silver, since the bare metal I build is itself painted silver. In the end, I ended up just brushing the painted silver bits (wings and fabric surfaces) in a dove grey. I also brush painted the rudder stripes. Decals were just the roundels from a Monogram T-6, and the serial numbers from another P-51 kit. Not too much weathering on this since it's meant to be factory fresh, just some exhaust heat stains. Simple kit, fun quick build.

Months later (executive function? Never met her.) I've finally finished the candles and based this big skull terrain. Ready to blast this thing with rattlecans and airbrush.

So, the reason behind a lack of sawdust reports is boringly prosaic: the shed needs a bit of tidying, I need to whomp up a stand for spraying the clear coats, and the weather's gone cold and a bit rainy, which means rattlecans won't get me a good finish and also I'm in a lot of pain. What I have managed to do is soften the string-snapping hard edges on the top-loading holes on the bridge, because I could bring that inside. Anyway, work will resume, once things are cleaned up, because there actually is a clever trick that allows use of rattlecans when it's cold and still getting a decent finish. It's called a bucket of hot water. Not too hot, you don't want them going pop, but you want them warm.

Did this in a hurry (which of course made it take longer and I'm dissatisfied with the paint finish) but I'm pretty pleased otherwise! This was a gift so I'll have to make another for myself.

Notes:

- watch out for rotational alignment and reversing of parts

- place consistently in jig for alignment

- rattlecan primer is clumpy, can we get airbrush primer?

- replace expired acrylic paints

after that rant last night, I walked out to check on the frame and fork this afternoon and I have to admit - the white is growing on me. Turned off the lights and the glow effect seems better today, but looks like it was put on with a wet mop vs even color. I guess that can't be helped, it is a rattlecan and not a finish shot in a professional booth.

Either way, I think even though it doesn't look particularly great right now that I can build off of what's already done. I did put a single can of 2k on yesterday, and it will take some time to cure. It will also take most of a week to order new paint, so win/win, eh?

I wouldn't need tons of basecoats since is already white underneath now, would just need to touch up a couple of places. I think I can ever so barely scuff this clear once it cures - and we're talking like a wet sand with 800 here - and then just add more coats of the glow then the clear. It's worth a shot, at least.

It's either that or sand it back down to the frame again and start all over. So yeah, I'm good with throwing another $60 at this to see if I can make it right first.

Ah, so the Croat importation company passing itself off as "True Blue Murican Made" has expanded to snagging reject HiPowers off the Ottomans. Still a hunk of shit that chokes consistently on any ammo you feed it and has finish applied with a rattlecan in the cold. Whereas I can throw a stick and find a CZ product in regular use with solid fit and finish. Never mind the platform itself not receiving that much development compared to its big brother the 1911 so if you want a proper Hi-Power that is reliable-ish made by a reputable manufacturer to bring to modern spec you're gonna have to get comfy putting optics cuts into milsurp and antiques.

CZ acquired Colt, not the other way around. Colt got dickslapped by being underbid by the aforementioned room temp IQ Belgians (who coped with being underbid by a bunch of guys in New Hampshire LARPing as Swiss by dumping their dogass pistol onto armored truckers and cops) to make rifles to be used as rust collection devices by the military then couldn't adapt to a civilian market that they neglected for decades and had left them far behind by that point. I cannot find a single source saying that Colt is the one running the show, Colt is a sub brand of CZ now, not the other way around. If anything will happen to QC it'll be Colt making a decent 1911 nearly worth the insane price points they assign them and they'll make their new Python parts not fucking rattle around like the wrong kind of snake.

Oh absolutely the same, and they cope about how their gun is better than a Hi-Power when it's worse.

Lessons learned:

1) I should have sealed it with modpodge before priming - sealing with rattlecan primer worked, but there's an obvious difference in finish depending on face or edge of foam sheet.

2) Trying to cut perpendicular curves with a knife is HARD
