Pretty Kitty

After a rough shift, Buck helps Eddie shake it off and let go.

The sun is beaming through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow across the room. The clock on the microwave is blinking, a visual reminder that it needs to be reset after the power loss last week. Construction down the street caused a brief surge, just enough to lose electricity for ten minutes. The clock on the stove has been reset, the current time of 11:28am visible in blue. A quick calculation from 9:15am tells Buck that it’s been a little over two hours since he got home after taking Christopher to school. That’s what he thought, which makes him feel pretty pleased with himself for having an accurate internal clock.

Opening the fridge, he grabs a bottle of Gatorade and the container of chicken fried rice that’s leftover from dinner last night. He pops it into the microwave, typing in two minutes to warm the food, and then he leans against the cabinet to wait. Two hours is the perfect time to take a break, and he has to give himself praise at having such good instincts because Eddie can’t call him a good boy right now. Later, he’s sure he’ll hear it, though. Eddie’s always good at complimenting him when he deserves it.

Constant Craving

Buck and Eddie have recently started dating, and it’s their third official date. While playing a game of pool, they make a little wager, and Buck gets to indulge a craving he’s had for years.

The pool tables are basically empty, which isn’t too surprising for a Wednesday night in July. The one in the far corner is taken by a couple of women who seem really focused on the game. The table that Buck claimed when he and Eddie arrived at the bar is on the opposite side from the ladies, in the back where the lights don’t shine quite as bright. This is their third official date since a clumsy kiss in Eddie’s kitchen followed by a not so clumsy kiss led to them making out on the couch until two in the morning and then a late-night slash early morning breakfast at an IHOP where they sucked it up and talked about feelings like mature adults even as they played footsy under the table while eating their pancakes.

That was two weeks ago, at the beginning of the month, and they’ve been pretty much inseparable since. Oddly enough, not a lot has really changed between them. They’ve always been close, hanging out at each other’s houses and spending their free time together, but the fluttery feeling that Buck gets when he’s with Eddie is now something he can acknowledge instead of ignoring or pretending he isn’t experiencing. The kissing is definitely new, too, as is the ability to indulge in being romantic and having sex and getting to sleep snuggled together.

I grew up in the era when distributors would just stick random shit at the end of a VHS tape to use up any space left over once the actual film was recorded, and sure, a lot of the time it was previews for other movies, but sometimes it was The Weird Stuff.

Perfect Opportunity

Buck and Eddie are working a shift together several weeks after their relationship became something more than just friends. It’s after midnight when Buck finds the perfect opportunity for them to make one of his fantasies come true.

His plan’s incredibly daring and more than a little reckless, but this is week seven with Gerrard as captain of the 118, so Buck thinks any deity in existence would forgive him for his impulsive behavior. Of course, Buck isn’t sure that something he’s been thinking about doing for weeks—alright, maybe even years if he has to be completely honest with himself—can really be described as impulsive. Daring and reckless are still the right words, though, and he has to admit that the thrill of possibly being caught does add another layer of excitement to his plan.

They’re in the middle of a 24 hour shift, and it’s been non-stop since they arrived at eight this morning. It's a little past midnight when Gerrard finally takes them off-line for three hours, and everyone has gone to the bunk room to catch up on sleep between calls. Buck’s surprised that it took him this long to want a nap, considering Gerrard’s fucking ancient and acts like a toddler when he has to actually work more than sit around the station demeaning people, but he’s not complaining about having three full hours of uninterrupted time.

No Regrets

Buck and Eddie’s relationship changes with an impulsive kiss during a rerun of Chopped. It’s now a few hours later, and Buck wants to make sure that Eddie doesn’t have any regrets.

When Buck leaves the bathroom, he’s surprised to find that his bed is empty. The blankets are piled up at the end of the bed, the sheets disheveled, and the pillow is still indented from where Eddie’s been sleeping on it. Maybe he shouldn’t have gotten up to shower? If he’d stayed in bed, Eddie might still be there sleeping. Since Chris is still in El Paso for another couple of weeks, he knows Eddie has nowhere else he has to be right now.

There’s a slight feeling of panic that grips Buck as he stares at the pillow, a knot of fear forming in his gut as he grabs his discarded underwear off the floor and steps into them. Thoughts rush through his mind. Did Eddie get freaked out waking up alone and leave? Did he have second thoughts about their relationship and sneak out when he had a chance? Did Buck push too much or get too needy too soon?

The office for Paranormal Research Group is located in an old firehouse from the 1930s that’s been converted into their work space. Station 118 was decommissioned sometime in the early 2000s, leaving a very unique space behind. The original architecture is mostly intact, an art deco style that gives the building a unique appearance, but the inside has been renovated and somewhat modernized.

There’s a bathroom with three stalls, a communal shower, a locker room, and a gym. The wall of the locker room is made of glass windows, which is very odd for a space where people used to change their clothes. The glass wall was put in sometime in the nineties, but the gym and kitchen in the loft area were completely gutted and renovated when PRG bought the building eight years ago.

Arriving for work at a fire station is pretty routine for Eddie. He worked at Station 143 for two years after completing the LAFD fire academy, and he was at Station 136 for a year prior to that doing his probationary year, after all. When he got the job offer to work with PRG, he didn’t expect to basically transfer to another firehouse, but it feels sort of like that every day that they’re working at HQ, as Chim calls it. He likes this old building, though. There’s history in the walls that’s almost palpable, which is probably why Bobby decided it made a good base of operations for the team.
