so about rashi

there are three things worth noting about rashi:

it's thought his daughters were fairly educated to the point that there's an urban legend about someone saying the reason it's ok to wear tefillin is that rashi's daughters wore tefillin

at the time of course it was not socially acceptable for women to put their names on things

rashi got an INSANE (like, physically impossible, someone's done the calculations) amount done

so we have a guy who does a ridiculous amount and his daughters who were allegedly very smart but couldn't have published at the time.

In honor of Leonard Nimoy’s 93rd birthday, I’d like to shine a light on a couple of his lesser known roles: those of Rashi and Maimonides, two great Rabbis in Jewish history.

Nimoy hugely influenced me not only by his portrayal of Spock, but through the ways he showed the world his Judaism without fear, and with nothing but love and pride.

Is it Too Late?

It was the monthly movie night as a break from the usual routine.

The softshell turtle would usually expect your arrival, looking over his shoulder, on whatever work in progress invention he was working on.

However, by the time you and the others were waiting for the pizza to arrive.

You didn't sit near him. Mostly across from him as you listened to one of his brothers. Talking about something that happened earlier in the day.

And most of the interactions you gave to him were just a smile. A different one he wasn't used to.

Ok so my grandma(dad side) went to a special institution that do research on you family name and give your this weird certificate that explains sruff about the family name, origin, meaning etc. So she did on 4 family names:

Her husband's

Hers-dad side

Her mother's - dad side

Her mother's (again)- mother side

And APPARENTLY i have a linage of THREE important rabbis(which one was literally a sofer stam) but that's not all- one of the family names can be traced to RASHI(רש"י) himself???

AND NOT ONLY THAT, which is HUGE, but there's a big fat chance RASHI is a descendant of THE KING DAVID?????

The thing I keep thinking about from queer talmud class last night is that the writings by Rashi are printed closest to the spine of the book on each page so that when the book is burned, his words are the last to be destroyed. Each printer laying out the book knowing that it will be burned. The consciousness of the pervasive will to destroy us being woven into the fabric of the living intergenerational conversation of our holy teachings.
