A rare and special thing happened at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on November 23, 2000 and as far as I know it never happened before or since. They opened with their improvised instrumental known as Masshole and as soon as the Johns came out, Flansburgh started banging on the keyboard while Linnell picked up the Chessmaster guitar and proceeded to noodle. 😲

I shot a video of this spectacle from the balcony with the lowres floppy-loaded Mavica, but of course that was the one disk that was somehow corrupted when I got it home. 😭 All I have to offer you is the video that I shot immediately after, in which you can see Linnell pretending to toss the guitar to Flans before handing it off. 😆

Like I said, I was in the balcony for once at this show, but here's a photo taken by somebody in my usual spot. As you can see, he's holding it upside-down and using the mic stand as a slide (!) 🙌

Timeline Theory…

July 2022 S3 starts filming, tension between L&J as they spend more time apart and L grows closer with N (I think L also has long harbored feelings for N and therefore withdrawing from J/emotional cheating leading to J doing the same with her costar)

November 2022 L&J break up, but it is messy and takes time bc they were living together and there was an expectation of forever from J, she struggles to let go)

During Filming - N and L act out their feelings (literally) but most likely not off screen, however their friendship and bond grows tenfold, at some point N is filming Big Mood and Camilla likely tried to ground N and tell her to take some time away from L to see if the feelings are real

March 2023 - Filming wraps, N friend zones L and tries to push her feelings aside, tells him to go travel and live the single life post J breakup (in a later clip that Tif posted she expressed how happy she was for him that he was traveling)

*Side note: around this time R got together with S

HBS 2023 R influences L to go on Raya to find a girl similar to S that will jive with the group so they can go on couples trips together, meets A and they start a casual fling

Fall 2023 - L is not working and has lots of down time (guess who else does as well), spends time with his friend group and A, but my guess is that they rarely see each other one-on-one and it is more of a group dynamic, go on couples trips with R&S

Jan 2023 A wants to make things official, but L says the timing is off with him going on a long press tour, he promises to spend time with her when he can, bringing her on work trips when able (Paris, LA, etc.)

*Around this time N may have been dating E, but I’m still not convinced that’s true. I think they were just close friends.

Through the press tour L&N’s feeling resurface, but there is underlying tension because L is seeing A, even though L is not ready to make it an official relationship (hence N’s comment during the paddle game about being friends and hanging out alone being a “mixed message”)

NY Premiere - A surprises L and there is tension, he doesn’t want her there and there’s friction at the after party, but he ultimately is too nice and makes up for it the next day by taking her to the basketball game in place of his sister (who probably told him to)

Brazil - At this point I think L&N talk about their feelings and L is upfront that he can’t cut ties with A at the moment, he’s probably worried about how it would affect the friend group dynamic and he probably already promised to take A on the trips after the promo tour (Milan, LA, GQ), but continues to tell N it’s casual and they are friends with benefits (I find it hard to believe A didn’t flirt with other guys while L was away for 6 months), N understands and encourages him to talk to A about the situation

Break Period - L takes A to soho house as an apology for NY and they discuss the situation, L expresses his feelings for N and tells her he will still take her on the trips to help her with her career as a friend

Canada/Ireland - Feelings between L&N become real and they talk about it, decide to take things slow, L makes it seem he has wrapped up things with A and N believes him

London - I don’t think L arranged the pap walk, I think someone on his team did (same one who told A about Brazil) or possibly someone from A’s camp although I find that hard to believe because I feel he would have dropped A quickly if that was the case. I think L was unaware his relationship was under a microscope and brought her to Milan not realizing people would be desperate to get photos. N was probably upset that he brought her to Milan after the pap walk and her show of public support. I have a feeling she decided to shove her feelings back down to protect herself from being hurt and told L to go off and be with A and the TT was a way to get L’s attention and also to use humor to try to get fans to back off and think she was ok)

NYC - the next day N flies to NYC to talk to L in person and potentially meet with the Netflix/Shondaland team to talk strategy, N expresses to L that she can’t be caught up in a love triangle at this point because of the negative attention and press, and the team decides the best thing for L is to carry on with A as normal until things fizzle and the attention shifts, NDAs were probably signed and A was told not to post anything about L, but she is desperate for attention and so are Ls friends so they continue to cryptically send messages to the fans that they are with him.

At this point I think things are fizzling with L&A, and the planned commitments and travel have all passed, and they are taking space, hence the need for A to keep recycling old content. I think L misses N and is trying to focus on himself right now while trying to keep everyone happy so as not to cause unnecessary drama (hence liking As posts)

The friend group probably feels bad and is trying to hype A by commenting and posting about her to show that even though her and L may not be together she is still welcome. A is riding the fame wave by piggybacking off of N and L is probably unaware. I think he has notifs turned on for N & A but otherwise is staying off of social media for his mental health.

All I know is this whole thing is meSsY AF

Banana Fish N.Y Memorial Magazine (1999)

I was searching through JP Mercari when I came across this booklet. Its market price is really expensive, due to it being a rare item and I couldn’t find any scans online of it so these images are from the sellers. It is a location guide from 1999 of Yoshida’s visit to NYC. If anyone else has any scans/photos please share as I have noticed there’s not many archives on banana fish content

Were the Battle Subway trains based on any specific real-life train? Or is it just different design elements from different trains?

Hi, anon! If you've seen the posts I've written that are linked on the Submas masterpost, I've touched on this a little bit here and here.

I don't know if they were meant to be a specific model, and they're certainly not designed to look exactly like the NYC MTA's trains. Here's my screenshot from Bulbapedia with the exterior visuals:

For reference, our cars don't really have those little skylight things on top, and generally look like this:

These are R-42s on their retirement run in 2020. They're pretty exemplary of what most NYC Subway cars look like, with smooth roofs and flat faces and generally no coloring on the sides (except for when people draw graffiti, but things haven't really been as colorful as they were in the 1980s in that regard for a long time).

In NYC, we denote our lines with colors and letters/numbers, but those generally sit in the windows of the train on signs and aren't painted on the car bodies.

I've pointed this out before, but the vintage car actually looks pretty close to a lot of the older equipment that used to run out here. You can look through some photos at the New York Transit Museum's online catalogue and see what I mean.

These bad boys date to the 1930s. I've been on them a couple of times when they're in operation and they're a delight to behold. But the car on the turntable there looks even older...perhaps a wooden one, from when the trains in NYC were elevated, or a Composite, the cars that were part-wood and part-steel and had a copper sheathing to protect them from fire, with which the NYC Subway opened in 1904. Note in this drawing that the Composite DOES have the little skylights.

In general, I believe the Battle Subway cars are based more on Japanese railcars than NYC Subway ones, and I'm not as familiar with their rolling stock, but on the rare occasions I do post my art you'll probably notice that I use the NYC Subway as a reference because I am committed to realism and am abnormally attached to my own local public transit.

Broadway Divas: Obscure Sondheim

To highlight how vast and varied Sondheim's roles and shows are, these five Divas have a singular Sondheim credit to their repertoire that are a little more obscure than most. So obscure that my dream of finding pictures to dazzle you all with was quickly shattered.

Bebe Neuwirth as Cinderella's Stepsister, Florinda, in a reading of Into the Woods for a 1994 movie that never came to fruition. This reading took place at director Penny Marshall's house and had a truly breathtaking cast: Robin Williams (The Baker), Goldie Hawn (The Baker's Wife), Steve Martin (The Wolf), Danny DeVito (The Giant), Carrie Fisher (Lucinda), and fucking CHER as The Witch. Bebe Neuwirth and Carrie Fisher as catty sisters tormenting Cinderella and getting their eyes pecked out. And then Cher trying to feed them to Danny DeVito. We were robbed of a masterpiece.

Judith Light as Joanne in a Reprise! presentation of Company at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. Though not known for her singing abilities, Judith was nevertheless part of an all-star cast for this two-week run in 2004. The only review I could find was...not favorable. It's been twenty years, and I, for one, think Judith Light deserves her chance at redemption.

Linda Emond as Mary in Merrily We Roll Along, 1988. The Seattle-based ACT company produced Sondheim's biggest flop musical through the month of May in 1988. Linda, then in her late twenties, played the female lead in a rare musical role for her. And I do have a picture thanks to ACT's fantastic archival system.

4. Susan Blackwell as The Giant in a 2019 one-night-only staged concert of Into the Woods. If you thought the recent Broadway revival was bare-bones, it had nothing on this staged concert at the Town Hall in NYC. There is one singular photo that includes Susan, and without knowing she was meant to be there, you'd never be able to identify her.

5. Paula Leggett Chase as Stella Deems in Follies, a one-night-only special event in Tangier, Morocco featuring a transcontinental cast of Divas. Since 2013 (excluding pandemic years), Rob Ashford has staged fundraising productions of shows such as A Little Night Music, The Crucible, and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Confusingly, though Paula sang Stella Deems' song "Who's That Woman," she was credited in the program as Emily Whitman (presumably they just combined the roles for this production and gave them to the dancer in the cast?)
