early banana fish volumes like 1-5 are the best imo it definitely feels more movie like and the grittiness of the akira art style is my favoriteeee. Also the eighties look is more standout especially in the designs like ash’s hair in the very beginning is 70-80s staple style lol
I really like the localization as well because they talk very American and sometimes they say things that you’d only know if you grew up in the tristate like I remember after Dino got ash’s gang members to kill Steven Thompson he told his guards to throw them in the pine barrens which is this crazy pine tree forest that runs throughout New Jersey that has a folklore that surrounds it being that the Jersey devil lives there.
The original CD drama especially..it used copyrighted music I’m still yet to listen to all 3 tapes because they are very long but when ash and eiji first meet at the bar the song playing in the background is shout at the devil by Motley Crue and somebody get me a doctor by Van Halen. I like the original voices too, I think ash and eiji’s fit more along with the soundtrack really gives the feel if it were to be animated then instead
As the story progresses I feel like it starts to lose a lot of that feeling as it turns more emotional and serious along with the art style becoming tighter and more perfected that’s not to complain it’s just when you read volume 16 and volume 5 it has a completely different feeling (naturally) but I dont mean the story or the emotions going on in the story I just mean overall feeling of the comics it starts out very 80s movie and then dissolves more into melodramatic shoujo story
don’t get me wrong not complaining at all I’m just a sucker for the roughness of the beginnings feeling

update going to nyc this week since my cousin lives in Brooklyn…I think I’ve about hit every banana fish spot and uploaded it onto here lol also I watched tomorrow’s joe or ashita no joe which is what Yoshida had in mind when drawing Ash’s death. It really is parallel, and a very good series, ash and joe have many similarities I’ll have to write something on it later. Definitely check it out don’t pass it up just because it’s old and about boxing lol

Happy Halloween!
I was reading volume eight today which is probably my favorite volume (real reason is the Coney Island fight LMFAO the illustrations are sooo cool) because you get so much information on the actual underlying story (the drug) which is reeaaally interesting to me because I love fictional stories that surround government/military and is either symbolic or allusion to the real thing. Never see many fans talk about the actual storyline like the entire point of banana fish use is because the US gov is afraid of the spread of communism in South America after Nam and the correlation with mafia is to filter money through.
In Max and Ash’s conversation Ash brings up the ignorance of American citizens when it comes to government issues and there’s not really any hiccups within it either which is pretty cool to me when you think the story is coming from a Japanese person’s perspective during a time where there was no internet so she was really learning stuff from her visits, movies, articles that made it over. Point is it really blows me away sometimes that there’s not many inconsistencies on how American culture is portrayed imo (again with making a story with only limited resources)….
Also I highly recommend machine translating the guidebook. The analysis shit is really fucking cool. She basically gives whole history lessons and you really see the characters so in depth. There’s a bunch of pages on LSD, MKultra and psychological factors behind ptsd/sexual abuse that you see reflected in Ash’s character like his hatred for men or the way he reacts to things and his self depreciation especially around Eiji as he really starts going into a downward spiral towards the end of the series.
Anyway, just ordered some more books so expect scans soon!
