sometimes when listening to clown circus i can actually forget its the first lemon demon album because its genuinely pretty solid at parts but then neil "lemon demon" cicierega's friends come out halfway through the song to fucking RAP for some reason and im like oh yeah. yeah this was the first lemon demon album alright. these guys fuckin suck! lemon demon PLEASE return these chaps they are not very good at rapping at all
#i don't know HOW many times this happens but i know at least that it happened in lemon demon - lemon demon and hyakugojyuuichi 2003#every time the guest rappers are fucking horrible#and you could argue neil cicierega himself isn't doin' too good either but at least he has a good fucking microphone#if i'm correct mr. cicierega was 16 when he made the album so i'm not MAD but ough my god is it funny to me#there's also a guest feature in view monster (knife fight) but that one was actually pretty good in my opinion#i mean. there's a reason people actually like knife fight#CHALKO THE REALED

Kind of inspired by the "fandom has bad taste in music" anon and the more recent "for fandom enrichment let's argue about character's tastes" anon, going to do some hardcore projecting based on my own musical tastes:
Charles' current musical obsession is Saharan desert blues. He also fucks with some French hip-hop on the side. He generally winds up listening to a lot of music that isn't from the UK -- he kind of searches out interesting scenes on a global scale. Edwin doesn't really connect with most of what Charles listens to, but he and Charles both agree on Angelique Kidjo, so she's one of their go-tos as background music in the office.
Aside from Kidjo, Edwin is generally fond of instrumental pieces, as lyrics are distracting when he is working. He's realized that while modern cinema like "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings" are not to his taste, he does enjoy their musical scores so pre-show he mostly listened to film soundtracks. Both Charles and Edwin share a particular fondness for music from the James Bond films of any era. Later, Niko shows Edwin Spirited Away & Edwin falls in love with Joe Hirashi's music.
Post-gay awakening, however, Edwin embarks on a quest to understand queer culture of the last hundred or so years. He finds doesn't really like most musical theater music, though he half-heartedly defends Sondheim to Charles. He likes opera marginally more as an audience member (Charles hates it), but he doesn't care to listen to opera music outside of watching a show. He dutifully listens to various women over the years who have been important to gay culture like Judy Garland. He find it intellectually stimulating from a historical perspective and he appreciates the artistic qualties & merits, but none of it is music he feels the need to casually listen to.
Charles off-handedly mentions to Edwin that he could look into queer male musicians and this is a winning suggestion: Marc Bolan, Freddie Mercury -- Edwin is enthralled. They watch Velvet Goldmine doing a movie night with the girls. "Pretty good, innit?" was Charles' reaction, but Edwin was left breathless. He is currently enamoured with glam rock & generally on the lookout for queer male rockers (and if many of them remind him somewhat of Charles, well).
Crystal listens to a lot of Erykah Badu, who to everyone's surprise Edwin winds up liking more than Charles. She's the most likely of all of them to listen to and recognize whatever is on the radio.
Niko loves metal. She got into it through Japanese metal, but now she's more likely to listen to The Hu or Bloodywood. She does appreciate English-language metal, but she finds it more of a curiosity. She also listens to a fair amount of rap and knows about all of the beefs between rappers, stuff that even Crystal has a hard time following.
Jenny, to everyone's surprise, likes folk music and older country: Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash. She introduces Edwin to Lavender Country (he finds it intellectually interesting through his blushes as some of the more vulgar lyrics, but ultimately not his style) and Orville Peck (he loves). This leads Edwin to discovering Lil Nas X's Old Town Road and all the remixes, which he loves so much and Charles has to ban him from playing them in the office.

A (Mostly) Comprehensive List of Tumblr Holidays
I saw this post about Tumblr holidays/celebrations, and there were a ton of them, so I decided to make an organized list and their meanings. I am also adding famous "fandom holidays" to this list. Feel free to point out any I missed/explained incorrectly and I'll add them!
Tuesday:
Supernatural Tuesday --- an episode of Supernatural was about a time loop where it was always Tuesday. Can be posted on any Tuesday.
Leave the Bog --- a meme with a drawing saying "When it's safe to leave the bog" and an arrow pointing to Tuesday. Can be posted on any Tuesday.
Thursday:
Out of Touch Thursday --- a video of the cast from the anime Lucky Star dancing to the song "Out of Touch" by Hall and Oates. Can be posted on any Thursday.
Thursday the 20th --- a screencap of a rapper in The Simpsons with a gold necklace that says "Thursday the 20th". Can only be posted on Thursdays which are also the 20th of their month.
February:
Galentine's Day --- February 13th. From an episode of Parks and Rec where Leslie dedicates this day to celebrating female friendship.
March:
Pi Day --- March 14th. The first digits of pi, 3.14, line up with "March 14" or 3/14.
The Ides of March --- March 15th. The day that Julius Caesar was assassinated. Many memes and jokes are made about him, the assassination in general, or bad luck.
Evergiven/Suez Canal Anniversary --- March 23rd. Refers to an event where a ship, the Evergiven, got stuck in the Suez Canal.
94 Meetings Day --- March 31st. From an episode of Parks and Rec where April doesn't think this day exists and books all of Ron's appointments then.
April:
April Fools --- April 1st. Also a real world holiday. The most popular prank is Rickrolling.
Mishapocalypse --- April 1st. On this day, Tumblr users spam one specific photo of Misha Collins, who played Castiel on Supernatural, where he is looking at the camera wide-eyed.
Neil Banging Out the Tunes --- April 13th. Refers to a photo of a rat by a children's keyboard with the caption "Neil banging out the tunes April 13th 2006".
Homestuck Day --- April 13th. The birthday of Homestuck, a web comic. It is/was one of the most popular fandoms on Tumblr.
It's Gonna Be May --- April 30th. Comes from a GIF of Justin Timberlake singing the song "It's Gonna Be Me". In the song, he pronounces "me" like "May".
May:
Star Wars Day --- May 4th. It comes from a pun between "May the force" and "May the Fourth".
Revenge of the Fifth --- May 5th. It comes from a pun between "Revenge of the Sith" and "Revenge of the Fifth".
June:
Let Papyrus Say "Fuck" Day --- June 16th. Someone who was annoyed with mischaracterization of Papyrus from Undertale established this holiday and it caught on.
July:
Dashcon Anniversary --- July 11th. Dashcon was a poorly organized attempt to hold a Tumblr convention.
September:
21st Night of September --- September 21st. The day referenced in the catchy disco song "September" by Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Frodo and Bilbo's Birthday --- September 22nd. The joint birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings.
October:
Mean Girls Day --- October 3rd. This comes from the part of the movie where Cady's crush asks her what day it is.
Treat Yo'Self --- October 13th. From an episode of Parks and Rec where Tom and Donna have a day to pamper themselves.
November:
November 5th --- Multiple holidays. It's Guy Fawkes Day (a holiday in Great Britain where effigies are lit to celebrate the failure of a traitor), and some people post screencaps of the movie V for Vendetta, where it's mentioned. November 5th, 2020 specifically had three huge news items: rumors of Vladimir Putin's resignation, Destiel (a ship from Supernatural) becoming (one-sided) canon, and the controversy over counting electoral votes in the U.S. election.
Life Day --- November 17. The equivalent of Christmas in Star Wars.
December:
Christmas Adam --- December 23rd. It comes from a Tumblr post making a pun on "eve" and "Eve" (from the Bible). As the original Tumblr post describes, it "comes before Christmas Eve and is generally unsatisfying".
Almost Christmas (Means It Wasn't Christmas) --- 11:59 P.M. on December 24th. This is from Ace Attorney, a video game where you're a defense lawyer. The fact that it's not quite Christmas is a crucial piece of evidence in one of the cases.
DL-6 --- Christmas/late December. This is when one of the most famous cases from Ace Attorney (mentioned above) occurs.
Other:
Annoy Squidward Day --- either January or February 15th. This refers to an episode of Spongebob where Mr. Krabs votes for Employee of the Month; a screen cap shows Spongebob pointing to the 15th day on the calendar with a sticker of Squidward on it.
Fuck this Post and Happy Birthday [Fictional Character] --- any character's birthday. The original Tumblr post starts out with a user saying "People who celebrate fictional character birthdays are annoying, pass it on", and another retorts with "FUCK this post and happy birthday, Sonic". "Sonic" can be replaced with a character of your choice.

starlight boys ep 1 thoughts!
comments on the system: ok i get it you're trying to be star themed but (a) it just feels like boys planet and (b) where are my iqiyi letter grades :( the coloured shirts? hello? the SPIRIT of idol producer/youth with you?
also zero star is HARSH harsh.
all that aside the trainees voting makes it interesting ngl
blood sweat & tears: calling yourself bts is just setting yourself up for failure i'm sorry
breathe: i do like syo's spirit but i do also think ryou kaito did better.. i hope syo gets his groove back bc he feels so refreshing
darari: KIM SEONGJU IS SO CUTE genuinely!! he reminds me of chen linong from ip :] the enthusiasm and the joy he sparks. star material. i was so happy when he was voted first at the start
crazy form: AYEEEE crazy form. ateez my GOATS. i think the guy who got all star wasn't really at the same standard as the other all stars. they still did pretty good though
black suit: SHAO ZIHENG MY GOAT. no words. phenomenal. slayed the house down. he feels so humble too. if i were him my ego would be through the ROOF
beautiful: THESE FIVE LOOK LIKE LITERAL CHILDREN they deserve better but at the same time they absolutely deserved the zero stars. i hope the show helps them do better. but they're so young
my house: bae173 omg.. the part with yoon saying she debuted at the same time as them was. something. i am rooting for them
fantastic baby: i cringed. the rapper guy (rex) annoys me idk why people voted him. 短剧哥 (zhang jijun) should stick to his 短剧s and his acting and his 600k followers. yang yan was bad singaporean representation and i am ashamed on our behalf HE WAS LITERALLY. SO NOT PRESENT
really really: oh man lee daeul and hui.. i never watched boys planet but. those two. rooting for him sort of
love 119: mic guy (zhang jinghe) screwed up ngl. i do like wang kun bc i watched him on asia super young but like. does he deserve all that hype
rush hour: YEAHHH this one was a banger. go lee junhyuk. he handled the mic thing so well too
good guy: also great. pentor is fun. kinda sad that they completely glossed over kris though
answer: oh boy. first, hell yeah ateez!! second, hell yeah ixform!!! neil did super well and duan xingxing really does have it all huh. i felt that sun yinghao was a bit weaker/didn't stand out but like. by god can these guys perform.
what the fuck happens in the next episode for sun yinghao to break down on camera "we're people not machines" HELLO??? MY GUY????
why only once a week.
i will be voting for shao ziheng, sun yinghao and lee junhyuk :]

ok so i have this thing in which, every time i gain a new hyperfixation, i imagine the characters as k-pop idols so here is basically my word vomit of how i think the aftg characters would be as k-pop idols and random scenarios i think they would be in because math class SUCKS
KEEP IN MIND i have literally only read like a third into the first book so 99% of my aftg knowledge comes from either
1. lurking on the aftg tag on social media
2. watching the book leo’s 2-hour long aftg video
3. ao3
and 4. reading goodreads review, so please excuse me if the characters feel ooc I AM NOT AN EXPERT so anyways here it is
1. neil josten: definitely that one k-pop idol who korean fans hate but international fans love. man’s definitely created a twitter/tiktok account dedicated to defending his members (especially a certain andrew minyard) that somehow managed to blow up so he’s basically living a double life lmao. he gives me main dancer energy but i feel like he could also be a main rapper
2. andrew minyard: he would be the k-pop idol that everyone thinks is untalented and unskilled and like makes everyone so confused as to how he debuted but then suddenly actually put effort into performing one day and everyone’s like “holy shit he’s actually GOOD???” he gives me all-rounder vibes ngl but i feel like he’d be a good singer (please tell me if he’s like canonically a shit singer or smth that would be so funny)
3. kevin day: leader obviously (though i feel like the foxes would have that thing where there’s like a leader and a co-leader ykwim?) but anyways probably the one that’s like really blunt and critiques the other members during practice which some stans hate bc yk but also a good portion of the fandom would really appreciate bc his criticism and borderline insults actually help the members improve pretty well. leader, main dancer, lead vocals probably
4. nicky hemmick: the guy that you either love or hate, there is literally no in between. honestly seems pretty likable at first but then makes some low key messed up jokes that puts people off. really talented tho, possibly ace/allrounder. he also would eat gg choreos up
5. aaron minyard: the “normal” minyard (he very much is not) prob the one that the cishet girlies love bc he gives off “mysterious bad boy” energy when he’s literally a fucking nerd lmao. STAN ATTRACTOR literally the felix of this hypothetical k-pop group. i feel like he and andrew got scouted to be a k-pop idol while they were buying groceries or something and were like eh why not and auditioned for fun just to actually pass
that’s all i can do for now because my next class is starting in literally 2 minutes uhh if i get more ideas for the other characters then i’ll probably edit this or make a thread or smth idk

I agree we need a different name for the music where people talk fast but aren't really rapping but everything I'm seeing about the term filk music is saying it's scifi and fantasy music regardless of genre
You can go with other names for it. Nerdcore, comedy music, parody music, fandom music. The point is that there are words for it because, even by the incredibly nebulous metrics of genre definition, there's an entire musical history behind something like The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate History (which is where I assume people are getting the 'lemon demon rapper' idea from) that is, and this is important, completely different from the history of rap which people are trying to push forward in the wake of the kendrick/drake beef.
I mentioned filk music in particular because, one, the focus on fast talking made it a workable analogue to rap in terms of needing technical and rhetorical skill to do with any measure of success, and two, filk songs are an obvious antecedent to a lot of Neil Cicierega's earlier work under the Lemon Demon name. Using TUSoUH as a way to sidestep the need to care about black music is disrespectful to black music and ignores where Neil C clearly does take musical inspiration from, your Weird Als, your Leslie Fishes, your Tom Lehrers, the history of music as satire, music as fandom, music as a derivation. It shows a stunning lack of interest in, not just black culture and its influence on pop, but on musical history in general.
I studied music in school once upon a time so this just gets to me. The development of music in this country is a beautiful clusterfuck of influences on influences, new instruments opening up new possibilities, economic and political factors influencing art which influence it back. I want y'all to care about rap history and its place in the wider scope of Afro-American history and politics, but also care about it and its place in the wider scope of music history. I want y'all to care about that more than winning a stupid argument about how nobody on this site knows anything about rap, which you shouldn't be trying to win because that's just true.

PUSSY GALORE, Toronto 1988 & 1989
If most people who lived through the '80s made a movie of their life, they'd probably soundtrack it with, I don't know, U2 or A-ha or Tears for Fears. My '80s biopic would be scored to Pussy Galore - probably my favorite band of the decade, and one whose three albums and four EPs bring me back to the first years of life on my own, post-college, making a precarious living as a writer and photographer. They were another major enthusiasm of Tim Powis at Nerve, and he made the rest of us fans (my then-girlfriend had a maddeningly not-so-secret crush on PG front man Jon Spencer), though they didn't actually show up in town until the magazine was effectively defunct. I was without a steady gig then, but I begged a portrait session with the band during their two-night stand in April of 1988 at the Silver Dollar Room on Spadina. My big memory of the weekend was that Philadelphia rapper Schoolly D was playing the room in the basement under the club, and that Jon and the rest of the band were more enthusiastic about catching his show than doing their own gig.
Jon Spencer formed Pussy Galore at college in Washington, D.C. with Julie Cafritz, added guitarist Neil Hagerty then moved to NYC, adding Cristina Martinez on guitar and ex-Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert on drums and junkyard percussion. Cristina had left and Kurt Wolf had replaced Neil Hagerty by the time I did my first shoot with them, while they were touring to promote their first LP (and - to me - undisputed masterpiece, Right Now!). They were cultivating a bit of a bratty reputation, so most of my two rolls of 120 film from the session are the band goofing around, pulling faces, and making it as hard as possible for me to get the sullen, iconic group portrait I hoped to take. I did, in the end, get two decent frames right next to each other, but decided against shooting the gigs in favour of just enjoying their cacophonous (but deceptively tight) show.
My friend Chris Buck also shot the band that weekend and ended up with some really nice portraits; my shots were harder to work with - beyond my meagre darkroom skills at the time - and would remain unseen and unpublished for at least twenty years until I posted one on my old blog a few years ago. I would, however get a second chance to shoot the band live a year later, when they were on tour again after releasing their Dial 'M' for Motherfucker record.
When Pussy Galore returned to Toronto in August of 1989, they'd had another lineup change, with Julie Cafritz leaving the band and Neil Hagerty returning. They played the Apocalypse Club on College Street and I ended up putting the band up in my Parkdale loft - the first of several times I'd give Jon Spencer and his bands a place to stay on tour. For some reason I was in an on-camera flash mood, and shot the show using a big new Metz potato masher flash fitted with a big bounce reflector. I also asked the band if we could do a quick portrait session in the dressing room, just as they stepped offstage, and I set up a light stand and umbrella, finishing off the last half of four rolls of Ilford film with the group.
Pussy Galore would be reduced to a trio with Spencer, Hagerty and Bert when they released their final posthumous album, Historia de la Musica Rock, in 1990. Jon and Cristina Martinez would found Boss Hog around the time the band was falling apart, and he would form the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with Judah Bauer and Russell Simins just after Pussy Galore broke up. Jon continues to record and tour, and I'd end up with him in front of my camera again, but that's a story for another day.
