M/V Nivaga III sitting at Westhaven. (2023)
The newest deep water ferry for Tuvalu, the Nivaga III was built by Japan Marine United Corporation and launched in 2016.
It replaced the aging Nivaga II, which, despite its age and miscellaneous mechanical issues, was actually sold to a Kiribati based shipping firm.
The Nivaga III arrived in T膩miki Makaurau on 12/10 via Suva, a journey of 2 days.
It was sitting on Titan Marine's slipway, but it was replaced by the Rangitata* and is back on the water.
*Not to be confused with the RMS Rangitata.

Wyspa Po艂udniowa 2023/24
Noclegi (numery wypunktowa艅 nie odnosz膮 si臋 do mapy, w nawiasach poda艂em liczb臋 nocy w danym miejscu):
Prom Bluebridge (1).
Kaikoura (2).
Mount Somers (3).
Hokitika (2).
Fox Glacier (2).
Punakaiki (2).
Saint Arnaud (2).
Ashburton Lakes.
Ci臋偶ko opisa膰 s艂owami surowe, dziewicze pi臋kno tych miejsc. Rozleg艂e, p艂askodenne kotliny rozci膮gaj膮 si臋 kilometrami we wszystkie strony. Rzeki jakby ci膮gle zmienia艂y zdanie co do przebiegu koryta: zdaj膮 si臋 rozlewa膰 wszerz niemal bez ogranicze艅, zape艂niaj膮c doliny szarym rumoszem, kt贸rego nie szcz臋dz膮 im otaczaj膮ce g贸ry, dosypuj膮c go obficie z licznych piarg贸w, go艂oborzy, bocznych jar贸w i zawieszonych dolin. A nad tym wszystkim lazur nieba poprzetykany wat膮 lekkich chmur ocieraj膮cych si臋 o szczyty.
M艂ody 艣wiat, dopiero si臋 kszta艂tuje i dojrzewa.
Najwi臋ksze rozczarowanie
Odwrotnie, ni偶 w Tatrach, gdzie warkot 艣mig艂owca oznacza nieszcz臋艣cie, w Fox i FJ za艣wiadcza o dobrej pogodzie.
Lodowiec Franciszka J贸zefa (Franz Josef Glacier)
Lisi Lodowiec (Fox Glacier)
Najwi臋ksza niespodzianka
Niekt贸re przyk艂ady:
W Kaikoura kto艣 podszed艂 do naszej dzia艂ki na polu namiotowym, ot tak, niepytany i zaproponowa艂, 偶e przytaszczy nam 艂awk臋, kt贸ra sta艂a nieu偶ywana.
Tam偶e dostali艣my od s膮siad贸w pude艂ko czere艣ni i brzoskwi艅. Podobno mieli za du偶o, ale nie chce mi si臋 wierzy膰, bo ich te偶 by艂o kilka os贸b, dali by rad臋.
Na sto艂贸wce kempingu Punakaiki pani z Christchurch odda艂a nam ciep艂膮 jeszcze potrawk臋 z kurczaka, kt贸rej mia艂a w nadmiarze.
W Hokitika gospodyni pola zwr贸ci艂a nam pieni膮dze za niewykorzystany nocleg bez 偶adnego proszenia z naszej strony, i to mimo 偶e odwo艂ali艣my go w dzie艅 przyjazdu.
Wsz臋dzie pomagano nam z lod贸wk膮 na lekarstwa.
Summa summarum
Bez dw贸ch zda艅, jedna z najlepszych podr贸偶y 偶ycia.

5th April
Pretty tired, don鈥檛 really feel like writing this cause 39kms and 30 river crossings.
Left hut by 7:30, quite steep decent down through Forrest, first river crossing around 8:15, one of the hardest of the day, high flow and depth. Valley floor was criss crossing the river the whole way down, 15 or so proper crossings, between knee and upper thigh level with faster than walking pace flow. Lunch was had just at the track head as I got myself ready to cross the Rangitata river, a section the TA trust has deemed a hazard and not to cross, however with the alternative option being a days delay and $180 shuttle, my options weren鈥檛 considered long. Adventure beacons. Having a 4 day old water level of 85m3, an idea of how much it鈥檚 rained, knowing the suggested 50-60m3 benchmark, seeing rain in the upstream valleys I ventured into these rivers full stream. A 45 minutes crossing stones and rocks to get to the braided river, requiring then 18 solid river crossings, at least 4 that required full attention but all in all doable. Glad I pushed. Would have been a truly spectacular experience if it was sunny rather than windy and drizzling. Then pumping through rolling hills on other side. Great track. Very windy. Trying out the coscos/Back Country alternative Radix for dinner, solid.
Wrap up:
Journey: Croomed Spur - across the hazard to a camp site 12.5km up river.
Kms: 22.5+8km, apple: 37.8km, 49k steps
Rivers crossed: 30+
Official km: 694

Sister ship of the 'Rangitane' and the 'Rangitiki', the 'Rangitata' operated between London and New Zealand via the Panama Canal. This poster of simple but effective shapes impresses with its confidence. The image may well be based on the photograph reproduced in the Evening Post, 23 June 1934, showing the ship 'Mataroa' in the Gaillard Cut.

Mount Sunday
Na Mt. Sunday ostrzy艂em sobie z臋by od dawna - tym bardziej by艂em rozczarowany m偶awk膮 i ca艂kowitym zachmurzeniem rano. Wystarczy艂o jednak odjecha膰 15 km w g艂膮b doliny, by zasta膰 tam pi臋kne s艂o艅ce i malownicze ma艂e cumulusy.
Wzg贸rze jak wzg贸rze - samotna ska艂a, kt贸ra mimo 偶e ma ze 100 m wysoko艣ci wzgl臋dnej, to w ogromie doliny gubi si臋 kompletnie, tak 偶e mog艂oby jej nawet nie by膰 i jej brak nie rzuci艂by si臋 w oczy.
Tutaj jest sama pierwotna dziko艣膰, a o obecno艣ci cz艂owieka przypominaj膮 nam jedynie krowy i druciane ogrodzenia pastwisk.
Na koniec wspomn臋, 偶e na Mount Sunday umiejscowiono Edoras, dw贸r Theodena z W艂adcy Pier艣cieni.
