SAMHAIN TOURS IN '84, BUT BIG BOYS PULL THE PLUG AT THIS VERY SHOW.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a show flyer and/or gig poster for SAMHAIN headlining with BIG BOYS and CRIMINAL CREW supporting, live at Liberty Lunch, Austin, TX, on September 23, 1984.
PART II: Also featured here, the late, great Randy “Biscuit” Turner also during the BIG BOYS last show, Liberty Lunch, September 1984. 📸: Pat Blashill.
Man, I knew the BB had played with THE MISFITS way back when, but I never guessed that they also played with SAMHAIN this late into 1984. Wow, this is news to me, and I've never seen this flyer before, either! Anyway, I've always known that BB broke up in '84, but I never knew they held out this long into 1984 before deciding to pull the plug on the whole thing. R.I.P. (1977-1983) MISFITS & BIG BOYS (1979-1984).

Tim Kerr and Randy "Biscuit" Turner, Big Boys by Russell Duke, date and place unknown (but at a guess, I'd say 1982 at Studio 29 in Austin.) For most of their shows, Biscuit created a theme for himself and sometimes the whole band. Whether his concept here was Motown soul singer or Jim Jones cult member, I do not know. But the contrast between Kerr and the singer is striking: ripped and torn versus white suit smooth. And of course, they look like they're having a blast. Pat Blashill

Every Record I Own - Day 90: Big Boys Lullabies Help The Brain Grow
At some point during my stint as a college radio station DJ, the manager decided to get rid of the station’s vinyl library. It was the late ‘90s and record labels were no longer sending out promo vinyl, so the library was essentially just a neglected closet full of dusty LPs that only me and one other DJ accessed. I snagged this Big Boys LP before it was announced that DJs were not allowed to keep any of the records. I had taken home quite a few LPs and returned about 90% of them, but figured I’d hold onto this classic slab of riotous party punk from ‘83 since no one else on campus was likely to appreciate it.

Randy "Biscuit" Turner (1949-2005)
An American punk singer, frontman of the pioneer skate punk band Big Boys from the late 70s.
As a performer and creative mind, Biscuit kept punk unruly and free at a time where the genre started to suffer from standardization. He was in this regard a true inspiration to many queer punk performers.
Randy Turner was a gay man but he refused to comment on his sexuality. His queerness was characterized by his artistry, his total disregard of the norms as he would perform in tutus and proudly claim the punk movement's freakish nature.

THREE DIFFERENT VOCALISTS, THREE DIFFERENT BANDS -- HARDCORE '81.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on vocalists Gary Floyd of THE DICKS, Henry Rollins of BLACK FLAG (recently joined), & the late, great Randy "Biscuit" Turner of the BIG BOYS, while on tour in Texas, c. 1981. [Is that Tim Kerr with his back towards the camera?]
"BLACK FLAG would pull in to town in some dying van. We would play with the BIG BOYS and sometimes THE DICKS as well. Great gigs in Austin, always. I remember many times sleeping on the floors of assorted Big Boys places. Biscuit was one of the greatest frontmen ever, right up there with Gary Floyd, the singer of The Dicks. The Big Boys were always in good form and the sheer spirit of their live performances would fill the place and everybody would go nuts. They always gave up the funk. What a great band."
-- HENRY ROLLINS, CD liner notes from the "Fat Elvis" compilation by the BIG BOYS

Every Record I Own - Day 53: Bad Brains s/t
Sometimes bad people make good art. This is going to be a recurring theme as I go through my library, so I might as well make my position clear now. I think it’s entirely valid to say “I don’t support this artist because I consider their actions or views to be offensive,” but I also understand that artists grow and change and learn. Artists live under constant scrutiny, and they’re every bit as prone to ignorance and lapses in judgement as everyday folks who don’t have people hanging on to their every word. Where is the line drawn between an artist who fucked up and an artist who is a chronic asshole or sociopath? It’s rarely clear. I try not to give money to bigots, but I’m also aware that most artists will, at some point, do or say something that could be interpreted as insensitive.
So... Bad Brains. An amazing band. Arguably the founders of American hardcore. I hated them for years, partially because my initial exposure to them was the more polished and subdued I Against I, but also because of the notorious incident with Big Boys and their gay singer Randy “Biscuit” Turner. Additionally, writing explicitly homophobic songs like “Don’t Blow Bubbles” didn’t help their cause. But over the years, members of the band have acknowledged the error of their ways, and I heard more of their classic early material. While I don’t care for any of their output after Rock For Light, it’s hard to deny that their debut album is one of the most fearless and energized hardcore records in history.
I bought this album at the same time I bought Gorgoroth’s Twilight of the Idols, figuring that Bad Brains’ Rastafarian homophobia could be counterbalanced by  a Norwegian Satanic metal band with a gay singer who made (and has since rescinded) racist comments in the early ‘90s. I’m not a perfect person.

Everyone loves the Big Boys--at least anyone sane does--and their discography is packed with plenty of classics, but they have a few deep cuts that show that they can really write a great song in almost any style. "Which Way To Go" from the 1985 album No Matter How Long The Line Is At The Cafeteria, There's Always a Seat is my favorite example of The Boys doing something completely out of the box. It's pretty close to proto-Chapel Hill indie-rock, with ringy guitars bouncing off each other and dual vocal lines. If I told you I was playing you a demo from Eric Bachmann's high school band, you probably buy it. We should also note they were one of the first pure punk bands and American bands in general to boldly channel Joy Division before their Peter Saville graphic was plastered on every stationary object in our society. No for real, peep this one.
Who doesn't like a song about not knowing shit? It's the entire nature of white rock music if you really think about it. Even Ozzy has written about not knowing--in "I Don't Know" of course--along with thousands of indie bands, rockers, solo artists, and singer songwriters. Maybe that's why I hate country music so much, because it's one of the few predominantly white genres of music where they fucking claim they know everything.
Blues cats are sad because they KNOW everything. They know their lady's been cheating on them and other bad shit and they're so sad that they write songs about it. Rappers also know shit too, but they aren't sad, they're bragging about knowing how much money, weed, cars, and pussy they have. Works for me.
The fragility of not knowing things is always what resonates with me--even in a fun skate rock band. One little track nestled between other rippers will always get me more than a mopey album of ballads played by someone with a beard. So thank you Mr. Gates and Mr. Kerr for writing and recording this one, and being ballsy enough to not only play any fucking style of music you desired, but for also not being afraid to write a song simply saying: I just don't know which way to go.
RIP Randy Turner

"AVAILABLE AT YOUR FAVORITE RECORD STORE -- NOW, GO START YOUR OWN BAND!"
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on flyers/record ads for Texas punk/hardcore band BIG BOYS second full-length album “Lullabies Help the Brain Grow” on Moment Productions, c. 1983. Artwork by Biscuit.
PIC #2: Record ad in Cretin Bull fanzine, Austin, TX, c. 1983. Artwork by the late, great Randy "Biscuit" Turner.
"The BIG BOYS are Texas' leading proponents of funk/punk, or "neo-bopism" as the Village Voice describes it. Their visceral brand of hardcore meets Famous Flames funk has ignited followers from coast to coast. Their new album "Lullabies Help the Brain Grow," is a fifteen song, thirty minute tour de force that leaves listeners fanatical and anxiously awaiting the BIG BOYS next US tour."
