Wednesday, May 17 - Izumo Taisha and Cape Hinomisaki
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today we took a train west from Matsue to one of the most important and probably the oldest shrine in Japan, already in existence in the 700's. Japanese shrines were traditionally rebuilt from time to time and Izumo Taisha was usually rebuilt every 60 years or so, but that custom has passed and the current Main Hall dates from 1744, and is also the tallest shrine in Japan. The Main Hall itself is off-limits to the public, although there are other smaller shrines and worship halls that are occasionally open. The large ropes at the fronts of the shrines are called shimenawa and indicate the presence of a deity, and also delineate the transition from mortal realm to divine space.
The main deity here is Okuinushi no Okama, who is considered to be the creator of Japan, and also the god of relationships and marriage. There are many stories about him, and the one that seems to be most common is the story about his kindness to a certain rabbit. It seemed that this rabbit had tried to cross the sea on the back of sharks, and they had tricked him and tore his skin off. When Okuinushi's family was walking by, his older brothers teased the rabbit and told him to wash himself in sea water to ease his pain, but of course that only made it worse. When Okuinushi came by, he treated the rabbit with respect and told him to wash in spring water and lie down in herbs, and so the rabbit was cured and his fur grew back. As a result of this story, rabbits are forever entwined with this shrine, and there are little stone rabbits everywhere, praying, reading, and my favorite, stirring a pot of rice. Of course, since rabbits are not native to Japan (there is an endemic rabbit on one of the small southern islands), it was more likely a Japanese hare, but bunnies are cuter.
To get to the shrine we had to take a train to the town of Izumo and then a bus another 10 km to the shrine. Those buses ran fairly regularly, but another less frequent bus went from the shrine out to Cape Hinomisaki, so we chose to do that first. At the cape is the tallest lighthouse in Japan, standing over the many small volcanic Islands that make up what is called Izumo Matsushima. The rock here is rhyolite and is fractured, looking like miniature basalt columns. We had about 3 hours until the bus back and were worried at first about how to spend the time, but we wandered down to a beach, watched Black-tailed gulls defend their rookery island from invading Black Kites, and wandered through the shrine out at the cape. We couldn't go up in the lighthouse because they were working on the top, but the views from the cape were stunning on a gorgeous day. The rocks were extremely colorful and the sea was quite active with a lovely breeze. All of the interpretative signs had some English, which was also helpful.
I've described a bit of the shrine above, but it is a huge area, complete with a very formal long entrance path, split into three. The outer two are for mortals and the center path is for the gods. Along the way are sculptures, a museum, and this lovely pond with blooming irises. A gathering of the gods takes place every 10th lunar month and is celebrated here at the shrine and on a nearby beach.
The photo with all the paper on the bamboo around the trees are a way of sending prayers to the gods. There are also little wooden plaques you can buy, and inscribe with calligraphy and leave on special racks, and there are more little offerings to buy. These trees were not as covered as some by the Main Hall, which is probably closer to the gods one hopes to reach.
We took a late bus back to the train station, and should have had 6 minutes to make our train, but the bus got stalled in traffic, and so when we got to the station we had two minutes to sprint (as much as we can sprint) across the lobby, stick our passes in the machine and run up the escalator. We made it with about 20 seconds to spare. On the ride back to Matsue I saw this traditional house in the last photo and thought it looked great in the evening light.
Tomorrow we may have rain in the afternoon, so have planned to go out to a peony and Japanese garden on an island in the "sea-lake", and then spend some time back at Matsue Castle and grounds, as long as the weather holds. Today's weather was perfect, so no complaints there.

doppelganger playlist + reasons for adding the songs!
trying to get used to playlist posts even though i haven't gotten any reqs for them yet [/lh] sooo here! everything's under the cut except for the playlist, which is linked here!
very quick color guide:
doppel - arle - some asshole who i won't directly name
Star of the Show - GHOST:
clowns? check. gay ass? check. feelings of being below someone who sees themself so highly when in reality they're a total bitch? check.
i think if doppel knew what kinning was she'd kin the funny clown laindividual
Pokemon glitch songs - Various:
once i listened to one of these and thought 'oh hey if i remixed this a bit it'd totally be a doppel boss battle theme lol' which actually led me to making the playlist more or less
L.A. - Crumb the Band:
"Where have I gone? I've been gone so long Where have I gone? I've been gone so long"
Theo - Omoi:
we needed a hopeful song on this playlist okay
From the Gallows - IDKHOW:
based off of a roleplay that completely shaped my opinion of her. she's in/she was in a horribly unhealthy relationship with a guy who had hurt both her and blue arle (kare) a lot but he is/was the only person who ever showed her actual love and affection at all so she felt she had to stay with him and do whatever made him happy because otherwise she'd be all alone again
Last Dance - Ev e:
healing song! 'that relationship was shitty' she said to her grandkids 'don't get in shitty relationships if you can avoud them'
Waltz No. 2 - Dmitri Shostakovich:
i just think she'd like this song a lot
Icicles - The Scary Jokes:
"You've become art, How could they even start to see? Beyond your presentation 'Cause they've got no imagination"
"And I admit it would be easier To be relieved of all this shame and not have to Wear it on my sleeve But I imagine it's quite nice for you To have so many chances Have so many ways to be redeemed"
she feels like the only way she can be 'redeemed' after trying to replace arle is just to let herself be entertainment for her [ex-]boyfriend.
she ends up feeling even worse after finding out he got away from both responsibility and guilt after assaulting both arle and his brother while she will never be 'free' from her own feelings of guilt for even trying to replace/fuse with arle
Tained Love - Gloria Jones:
"Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away, I've got to Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me The love we share Seems to go nowhere And I've lost my right For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night" "Once I ran to you (I ran) Now I run from you (Now I run) The tainted love you're giving I gave you all a girl can give you Take not give and that's not nearly all Tainted love"
she has. unhealthy relationship
Vault Sideways Piano & Vault Battle - Mike Morasky:
the latter sounds very vaguely like her theme/something that would be her theme and both fit her well imo
Boss Battle - Einosuke Nagao/Tsuyoshi Matsushima [Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji OST]:
she's boss
Battle theme - Toshiaki Sakoda and/or Masanobu Tsukamoto [Madou Monogatari 1 PC-98]:
she's also battle
Clown - Junichi Yoshida, Koji Onari, Kazuaki Nagai [Puyo Puyo~n]:
it's literally her theme /lh
Blood from the Concrete - The Scary Jokes:
.she's constantly putting herself (and sometimes even kare) down to please her [ex-]boyfriend, feeling like if she doesn't basically become the perfect in entertainment and care and love then she'll never be anywhere close to 'redeemed' in anyone's eyes
something sort of heartbreaking, too, is singing this song from her POV would show how much she believes her boyfriend's lies - "he's always been so supportive to me, and nothing but! he's always been kind to me! he really thought i was the real arle!" [all things he actually said in the rp to try to manipulate her into staying with him]
another thing is she's been trapped for so long she hardly remembers how to give affection or treat anyone right, leading her to try way too hard to please this guy to make up for it.
A Mannequin Adrift - The Scary Jokes:
"Come on, let us see you smile Stop crying and let's see you smile There You're much prettier that way"
"It's so hard to function I feel like my body has died with my soul trapped inside This cold death rattle in my chest feels just like pennies in a tin can"
Last Decisive Battle - Unknown [Puyo Puyo~n]:
another one of her actual themes
Honey I'm Home [8-Bit] - Youtube user Saidan No Hitsugi (original by GHOST):
i just think it'd be something she'd listen to
BROADCAST ILLUSION [Music Box] - Youtube user Avenir / lysterhein (original by GHOST):
another thing where the original doesn't really fit her (disregarding the manipulation stuff) but i still think that she'd listen to it
The Moon Will Sing - The Crane Wives:
"Tell me once again I could have been anyone, anyone else Before you made the choice for me"
"All those empty rooms We could have been anywhere, anywhere else Instead I made a bed with apathy My heart knew the weight Ten years worth of dust and neglect"
starting off, listening to this song actually made me cry, both because of remembering bad stuff and because it fits her so terribly.
one of the biggest and worst tiny moments in this awful rp she was in was one where she doubted her boyfriend's love for her.
this wasn't her plan, it just wasn't. she wanted to regain what she lost, catch up with what she missed. she wanted her friends, she wanted "her" friends. was this really what she wanted?
she lied to herself and said yes, this is what i wanted, but she knew it really wasn't; it felt so forced to her, to want it.
another thing is the last line - ten years worth of dust and neglect - fits in so terribly well with a song i made for kare about her experience with doppel's boyfriend
"No but seriously, I’m too scared to face you but believe me I had to go to therapy for ten years ‘cause of this shit"
(i know the lyrics are bad i made it in one go-)
Truck Stop Tiger - Roar:
"You stayed with me like glass between my teeth We'll burn the house before anyone gets out When life loses meaning, there doesn't need to be a reason"
"When you're stuck in this position It's like training for the wrong conditions" "You've been training for the wrong conditions"
.doppel being with her boyfriend hurts her so much. she can hardly handle staying with him, she just wants to leave but he won't let her and he just won't go away!
training for his favorite sport, boxing, isn't something she wants. she doesn't like boxing, she doesn't have fun, but she can't do what she wants without disappointing him. she tried telling him it was too much several times, but he just didn't listen!
{shout-out to my awesome friend tsu for giving me this song to add to the playlist}
Safe Ship Harbored - The Crane Wives:
"Watch me give up, honey, watch me give up I swore I never would What we've been wishing upon ourselves Things that I forgot I cannot do"
"Where does your faith fall? Where does your faith fall in me? Don't break the bottle Don't waste your blessings on me"
"I ain't proud I wasn't born a safe ship Something wore me down"
honestly i could put the entire song here but i'm keeping it to just those lines
she wasn't made to box, she wasn't made to bend over backwards for a guy who only kisses her when she wins a match, she wasn't made to only be with one guy who's only with her because kare refused to even look at him after he assaulted her
she constantly tries to give every part of herself to him while receiving quite literally nothing in return, and it's not working out
Hope - Roar:
"Do I need a reason to wake up lonely all the time? I don't want to see you, but I don't know where to hide"
"Swim in circles, water fills your lungs And why should anyone else offer their help? I mean, just look at the way I never took care of myself"
"I'll be numb, but I'll be free My friends will keep me honest"
"You won't mean a thing to me Now, that's what I call, "progress""
mental illness monday starring both arles

Our trip to Matsushima didn’t go quite as planned! (Which is fine, because unless I really want to do something, I’m welcome to change and the adventures it brings.)
We were supposed to go to a festival in the evening. However, thinking we’d head in early to see everything we missed last time, we got to town at ten in the morning.
And then it rained all day. And then we ran out of things to do three hours before the festival. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Buuut I’m sure y’all ain’t here to read about the Date Masamune museum (which was unexpectedly full of eye jokes).
My partner did come with, which made me happy because he’d never been to Matsushima before. It made me even happier to see him relaxed and cracking jokes with and talking to my other friends. At one point we ended up alone at the visitor’s center while half our group went to a tea house and the rest went off in search of rice crackers. Watched the rain splatter against the glass, the gulls hover over the sea, the boats bob along the dock, the fog hide the barrier islands from sight - talking all the while about random things. Then, a bit unexpectedly, he asked me how the heck I ended up at our job.
So I told him how I’d found the school while job hunting, how I’d tried and failed to get a job back home (leaving out the soul-crushing depression that accompanied every rejection). I said it still took me a year after I graduated to apply because I was scared. And then I gave the religious answer: At the time, God had been revealing to me the true meaning of love, and when I asked Him how I could serve others, the door to Japan swung wide open.
After that, we discovered the bridge to a nearby island was closed, so we went for a second round of ice cream, then called it a day. I checked out mentally to enjoy the melancholy afternoon while he and my friend chatted, then he and I got off at the station together and talked about writing and school as we walked. I said I’d wanted to churn out 200-page fantasy novels, he said he’d wanted to sit in museum basements and sift through boxes of artifacts and ancient texts.
We parted ways, and I came home perhaps more confused than ever.
I say it doesn’t matter, and my eyes flood with tears.
I tell myself it’s fine if this is as far as it goes, and something in me responds with emotional distress.
I don’t know how I feel, but I’m happy just having the chance to be close to someone so interesting. I’m happy that there’s something I can do for him, no matter how small.
It’s like I won the lottery. I have so much more than I had last year, and I feel like God has given me more than I deserve.
But enough of my crying. It’s Suicune raid day, I’m meeting a friend for breakfast, and I’m chatting with my cohort later! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day.

佐藤勝利 - Talk theme: Television
Ever since I was little I was a child who watched a lot of TV. I especially liked dramas like “Proposal daisakusen”, “Hana yori dango” and “Yamada Taro monogatari”, I was totally engrossed in them. As I recall it, I watched an overwhelming amount of my senior’s works but at that time I wasn’t conscious of Johnny’s at all, of course I didn’t think I would be part of them one day. It also became a popular topic at my school since (the dramas) were simply funny. It’s a love comedy but even a guy like me was able to laugh naturally and enjoy these dramas.
Now TV is not only something I enjoy watching but I also started acting and seeing myself on there as well, the fact that TV still has a big presence in my life didn’t change. Now the influence is even bigger. There are many times I truly realise that. For example when we appeared at “NHK kohaku uta gassen”, even people in the generation of my grandpa and grandma were able to get to know Sexy Zone. When I did “Real scope”, there was a special feature food in the supermarket that you had to pick up which gets sold-out pretty quick after the broadcasting date, so I ran to the supermarket between the recording and the broadcasting date to buy it (laughing). Because of its influence I think I have a certain sense of responsibility and have to do things properly. Because TV is reflecting my own conditions, my movements, my voice and my words exactly as I lay them out so that men and women of all ages can look at it. So whatever show I do I challenge myself with a feeling of nervousness. At the same time I also enjoy doing them a lot. Dramas, variety shows, singing programmes, from everyone who has seen me in these I was able to see their reactions and that made me very happy, it encourages me.
My future aspirations regarding TV are having our own tv show with the group and increasing our performance skills, I think I want us to display those even more. When it comes to solo work I want a drama. I want to make a funny drama. I want to make something that you can enjoy regardless of gender, I feel like something our generation can relate to. In that sense, maybe I have always been chasing after my seniors ever since I was little.
Q1. I had a fight with my friend. Shori-kun, please tell me your way of reconciling!
I think there are things that can be solved with time. So first of all, I distance myself from them so both of us can cool down. Then while looking at my partner’s situation, I wonder if they would think “I want to solve it soon” as well. There’s no use in making up forcibly so rather than stifling my own feelings, I think it’s better to tell them properly that I want to talk and reconcile so we have no ill feelings left behind. At that time, if I think I’m the one who did bad I will apologise honestly. In the end it’s just my way of doing it though.
Q2. Is there anything you would like to say to the members?
When we went to Shizuoka for our concerts, the five of us had dinner together but (Matsushima) Sou-kun decided to explain the local gourmet food lined up on our table. I really appreciated that and thought that’s really kind of him but about 80% of his explanation I didn’t understand at all! (laughing). Although we weren’t in a hurry he seemed to be impatient and talked in weird Japanese. Even if I didn’t understand his explanation the food was delicious, so I didn’t mind (laughing).
Keep in mind I am not a native speaker therefore there might be mistakes in my translations. Also I’m not exactly translating word for word. Feel free to correct me in my ask box any time you want, I’d appreciate it! I apologize if someone already translated something before me and I didn’t notice, I hope you don’t mind.
Credit goes to kentonosexyzone @ Twitter for the scans, thank you!

Tohoku Adventures: Matsushima, Miyagi
I just couldn’t get enough of Matsushima that I had to go back and visit again, and this time, it was a day-trip.
I have visited some Date Masamune-related sites last November 2017 (something that I seriously need to blog about but I lacked time last year because of personal issues), but Matsushima had been one of those sites I visited in passing, mainly because at that time, I decided to visit at night since they had some night-only events like evening maple leaves viewing and the night cruise around Matsushima Bay.
[Spoiler alert: I was up at Ishinomaki to view the Datemaru replica that day and I lost time to wander around Matsushima because the trains ran on limited hours]
With the weekend of February 10~12 being a 3-day weekend, I decided to go back to Matsushima for a day trip to celebrate.
Tumblr media
As always, I ordered my favorite Yonezawa beef kalbi ekiben from Ueno Station for breakfast, as I knew it would be a long day. I took the earliest Shinkansen possible from Ueno so that I would not have any problems with the time. I intended to spend the day mostly in Matsuhima, then make a sidetrip at Shiogama to visit the shrine that was formerly the Date clan’s shrine.
I got to Sendai a few minutes past 8AM, and it was very cold.
Tumblr media
As you can see, Date Masamune lives on in Sendai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The creator of Cyborg 009, Ishinomori Shotaro, was born in Ishinomaki, and has a manga museum in the city. Said museum suffered from damage from the 3/11 tsunami but has reopened after repairs.
I had to change trains from Sendai Station and make my way up to Matsushima, but because I rode the express train, it did not stop at the station that I needed to get off at.
I ended up being stuck in Takagimachi for a little over thirty minutes and tried not to freeze my ass off during Tohoku winter.
[I kept asking myself at this point, “How do these people living here deal with it?!”\
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, the ad above mentions Date Masamune, as the train station I stopped at was heading for Ishinomaki, which is yet another Date-related area.
As soon as I got to Matsushima, I quickly made my way to Zuiganji, the Date clan’s former temple.
Yet another proof that aside from being a formidable warlord, Date Masamune was a patron of the arts and culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The temple had been quiet when I arrived, as it was still very early (around (9:45AM).
Photos were not allowed inside the temple, so it’s best to go there and see for yourself just how fancy the temple is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After going around the temple, seeing the museum, buying some tea and having my temple stamp book inked, I went to a nearby temple called ‘Entsuin’, a temple dedicated to Date Mitsumune, a grandson of Date Masamune, who died early at the age of 19.
To be honest, the place gave me a bit of an eerie feeling so not much photos, though I was very impressed at the fact that the pond there was nearly frozen solid.
Tumblr media
I was freezing, so I was thankful for the tea they offered to the visitors.
Tumblr media
Date clan crests (left and middle):
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Apparently, Date Masamune’s family has a total 8 clan crests. Those two pictured above are 2 of the 8 that they have.
They say that the temple has a nice rose garden, which should be enough reason for me to visit again in the summer, or even spring.
With that done, I headed back to the main road to visit Godaido, yet another place related to Date Masamune.
[At this point, it is probably obvious just how much I love this man.]
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Explanation about Godaido:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point, I was getting a bit hungry and started craving for umen (bad idea for a lot of reasons, one of which being umen is definitely not a Matsushima specialty), so I decided to end the hunger pangs by eating zunda mochi.
But before that, I decided to do some shopping and got myself a piggy bank:
Tumblr media
Again, three of the eight clan crests are shown on the piggy bank, which I think is so cool.
Near the souvenir shop was a ‘Date cafe’, which I heard served parfaits. Nevertheless, I went inside and got zunda mochi, as they have it on the menu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Admittedly, this is the best zunda mochi I have ever eaten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With no umen in sight, as Matsushima’s specialty is seafood, I decided to eat a poor substitute of umen, which happened to be udon.
I changed my mind, however, when I decided to yolo and order gyuutan, a Sendai specialty. For once, I enjoyed it, as it was very tender.
Tumblr media
I decided to go back to the dessert place to have my parfait, and decided to get the Bontenmaru parfait, as I was in no mood to eat the Date Masamune parfait, nor did I have the stomach for the Sengoku parfair (the one on the left).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I finished eating the parfait in record time, and headed off to check out the souvenir shops.
Date-gumi swords (Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, Ookurikara, Tsurumaru Kuninaga)
Tumblr media
Zunda jam/spread
Tumblr media
Sendai Date Masamune Cookie [The horse taking a break is hilarious]
Tumblr media
Sendai has strawberries too!
Tumblr media
The shopping got me hungry again so I had zunda parfait next door:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By this point, I was simply killing time until the ferry ride from Matsushima to Shiogama at 3PM. Had a quick chat with the lady at the ticket booth, as she was supposedly impressed that I knew how to fill up forms in Japanese (I booked my ticket online). I’m guessing that Matsushima doesn’t have much foreign tourists, which, I think, is an oddity from the Japanese’s point of view, as most places up north that are not skiing places are not visited by foreigners frequently. Admittedly, I only decided to go around Tohoku because going to the west (Osaka, Kyoto) is too expensive for a foreign resident in terms of traveling via Shinkansen. Nevertheless, I love Sendai and Miyagi so much because of Date Masamune, and it makes me happy that I can at least visit the city frequently.
After being handed my ticket, I was given a map.
Tumblr media
Pro-tip: Kanrantei is also a Date Masamune-related place.
Tumblr media
Once the ship arrived, it was off to Shiogama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By 3:50PM, we’ve arrived safely at Shiogama.
Tumblr media
From here, it was a twenty minute walk to the shrine that I visited last November 2017, which also happened to be a lucky find at that time, as it was a shrine related [yet again!] to Date Masamune.
The approach from Hon-Shiogama Station was better than Shiogama Station, mainly because of this:
Tumblr media
Last November, I went for the 202 steps and nearly killed my legs in the process (long story short: was walking around the whole day and walking up 202 steps = recipe for pain and suffering). This time around, I went for the East Approach. As advertised, it was gentle enough for me.
Tumblr media
Again, the emphasis of this place being related to Date Masamune:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As this year is the Year of the Dog, they’ve set up the ema (wooden plaque) by the shrine entrance:
Tumblr media
And because the shrine is called ‘Shiogama’, there’s salt next to the dog.
More Date culture info:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo of the shrine in winter:
Tumblr media
202 steps down:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that, I headed back to Hon-Shiogama Station.
On my way to the shrine, I saw a marker regarding how high the water was during the 3/11 tsunami:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the town is back to normal, I am still hoping that many tourists will come by and visit.
Because Shiogama Shrine is nearby, there was another ema by the station:
Tumblr media
As with everything in Japan, the town just had to have cute mascots:
Tumblr media
Got back to Sendai in 45 minutes and did some shopping. Before I got back to the station, I made a sidetrip to eat taiyaki, but not just any taiyaki...
It had to be zunda mochi taiyaki.
Tumblr media
Since the gateau caramel was sold for a limited period, I ended up buying one as well:
Tumblr media
Personally, I think nothing beats the zunda mochi taiyaki.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the snacking done, I was so ready to go back to Tokyo, only to start craving for umen... AGAIN.
In my desperation to have some umen, I began planning for my trip the next day, which would involve going to Shiroishi, and I am not particularly excited to make a trip there just to eat umen. I have nothing again Shiroishi, but the place was simply too quiet for my liking, and I have already visited Shiroishi Castle last November.
Luckily, one of the shops in Sendai Station had umen on their menu, and I happily ordered the ‘Masamune Umen’.
They sell the cold variety, but I ended up eating the warm variety, as I was still freezing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With my dinner done, I bought my ticket back to Tokyo and did some last minute shopping.
To my surprise, Sendai has began selling kinako mochi!
Tumblr media
Bought a box just to see if it’s better than Yamanashi’s Shingen mochi, or even the sweets shop near my workplace.
With that, I went back to Tokyo, feeling better than ever.
I haven’t been myself since last year, proof of which would be my lack of any writing updates. I’m slowly getting better though, and I’m hoping that my sudden decision to travel up to Miyagi to have fun would be the start of my recovery.
Up next: Shinshu Adventures: Ueda, Nagano.

Toying (Part One)
Title: Toying (Part One)
Pairing: Sexy Zone/Female OC
Rating: PG-13
Subtext: Her big mouth landed her a strange contract
Note: In this story, Sexy Zone are third year high school students. So they're all the same age. The OC is one year younger than them, being a second year student. This story is inspired by Hana Yori Dango and will bear MANY similarities. Warning: LONG
My name is Ayano Mizuki. You’ve probably never heard of me before, but you’ve definitely heard of Kaisei Academy. Yes, the internationally renowned Kaisei academy. School for the heirs to large corporations or spoiled sons and daughters of rich assholes. All very famous, all admired. So why don’t you know me? Well that’s because I’m a commoner, as they would say. A poor girl living amongst people who wear Gucci as if it’s an everyday thing.
In the midst of Kaisei academy there is the F5. F5 stands for founding five, which sounds terribly drab, which is probably why they abbreviated it. The F5 consists of the five heirs to the companies that founded Kaisei academy. They are given full reign to the school, and everyone worships them.  These five are: Sato Shori, Nakajima Kento, Kikuchi Fuma, Matsushima Sou, and Marius Yo.
Sato Shori. No doubt the leader of the group. Blessed with wickedly good looks, he’s a serious person who rarely smiles, but when he does the whole world turns to look. He’s the heir to the largest technology corporation in the world, the Sato Tech group. They are the most advanced group in technology, and is praised for being efficient and flexible to all changes. Rumour has it that they’re also tied to the underworld.
Nakajima Kento. Playboy who can make every girl weak in the knees. His parents are no doubt big faces in the entertainment world. His father is a well renowned actor and his older sister is a model. Rumor has it that Nakajima Kento himself is skilled in almost all fields of the arts, from acting to modeling.
Kikuchi Fuma. Father is a famous music composer and singer. He’s composed music for many popular artists of different genres, and was praised for having a voice that anyone could enjoy. Some say that his son has the same musical talents and can sing like an absolute angel.
Matsushima Sou. His father was a photographer who anyone could hire for a large sum of money. He was talented in the photography field, and his photos were magical. A modeling corporation hired him to shoot one of their models for a magazine, and he fell in love with the model. This is how Matsushima Sou’s parents met, and the story is loved by so many in the world, that there have been so many movies and books based around the story. Matsushima Sou is never seen without a camera, and people say he is always smiling.
Marius Yo. His parents own some of the most high class restaurants in the world. They also own popular restaurant chains. Renowned chefs known to be innovators of the culinary world, people already have high hopes for Marius Yo, and they say he may be even better than his parents.
Don’t they sound nice? They sound perfect, maybe even too perfect. Remember how I said they have full reign over the school? Well that isn’t so much a good thing.
“It’s the red notice! Kirishima Saki got the red notice!” a person yelled, running down the hall. Everyone in my classroom stood up, shit-eating smiles on their faces. The teachers dismissed all classes and everyone went out to chase down Kirishima Saki. Kirishima was doomed, and he knew it too. I sighed, following the crowd reluctantly.
“There he is!” someone shouted. Everyone turned to see Kirishima Saki running up the stairwell, trying to escape the massive crowds that were hunting him down. He reached the top to come face-to-face with another group of people. He was surrounded.
Two boys kicked him and dragged him to the front hall, in front of the five chairs that were reserved for the F5. They were not present at that moment, but I knew that they would be here very soon. As Kirishima cowered on the floor, the crowd jeered. A few people started egging the poor boy, who was defenseless. There was no way anyone would come and help him. After all, you’d get on the bad side of the F5 if you did, and no one wanted that.
“Ahh! F5 is here!” shouted the girls, all batting their eyelashes in hopes of catching the attention of one of them. The crowd parted, letting them through. One guy held up Kirishima’s egg-soaked frame. “Sato, we caught him.” he announced proudly. Shori smiled, “Put him down.” The boy dropped him and faded back into the crowd.Shori bent down to look at the targeted boy. “You’re not coming to school again right?” he grinned wickedly. Kirishima shook his head. “Good.” Shori smiled, standing up, “Dispose of him.” Two boys took Kirishima outside, while the rest waited for F5′s next orders.
With a wave of his hand, the crowd was dismissed, and everyone dispersed.  “What did Kirishima do anyway?” One girl asked.  “I heard he bought a limited edition watch that Sato wanted.” Her friend replied. “Wow, what an idiot.” She replied, laughing.
I groaned. Why am I in this school? I don’t belong here. Sometimes I wish I could shut up the F5 once and for all, but my parents worked so hard to get me in this school, that I want to repay them by graduating safe and sound. Which means laying low and being unnoticed. I already stand out because I don’t bring any designer items to school, and I can’t afford the school lunches. Luckily I haven’t been bothered by anyone yet.
Or so I thought.
“It’s so annoying! They act like complete narcissists and control the school through fear! They don’t understand what respect is either. Spoiled brats.” I huffed as you chatted away on your phone to your best friend, Nakamura Rika. I was in the park after school as usual, and was waiting for her to come. The two of you worked a shift at the ice cream shop across from the park, and we’d always meet at the same bench everyday after school.
“So Kaisei isn’t as wonderful as people make it to be huh.” Rika sighed.  “Definitely not. The students are all spoiled brats and the F5 is an excuse for the five to not wear the uniform.” I complained.  “Mizuki, I’m almost there okay? I have to hang up because my battery is depleting fast.” Rika laughed. “Alright then, see you there.” I replied, smiling.
“Narcissists huh?” a voice said from behind me. I turned around to find myself face-to-face with F5′s Matsushima Sou. “Is that so?” he smiled, his signature camera dangling around his neck. “Uhh.” I couldn’t answer. I was terrified that he heard what I had said. “I heard everything. Ayano Mizuki right?” he grinned. “I’ll remember that.” he nodded before walking away. I let out a big breath, quivering. I was so screwed tomorrow.
“Mizuki!” Rika called as she ran up from behind me, “What’s wrong?” “F5′s Matsushima Sou heard our conversation.” you whispered in fear. “No way!” her eyes widened. “I’m going to get a red notice tomorrow.” You felt yourself tear up. “Mizuki... You’ll be fine! You’re Mizuki after all! The person who protected me all throughout my childhood from the countless bullies.” Rika smiled, trying to cheer me up. I took a deep breath and nodded.  “You’re right.” I said, though the pit in my stomach never left.
I’ve never been so scared to open up my locker. I could already picture it. The red notice dangling from my locker. The shouts that filled the hall. The humiliation. I shook my head, clearing those thoughts.
I can do this. So I opened the metal door with my eyes squeezed shut. As soon as I had opened it I opened my eyes to see-
Nothing. There was no notice. I felt relieved but also couldn’t help but feel confused. Why wasn’t there a notice? Did I imagine the encounter with Matsushima Sou wrong? Yet despite that I was so happy I couldn’t hide the large grn the filled my face. My classmates looked at me with disgust as I sat down at my desk, smiling.
It’s a good day. I thought to myself, giggling a little. “Ayano Mizuki?” a boy called from the doorframe. “Yes?” I responded, turning around to face him. “The F5 wants you.” he said. My smile vanished instantly. The people in my class laughed.
“What did you do, commoner?” someone jeered as I followed the boy out the class. “Did... Did they say why?” I asked quietly. “How should I know? All I did was follow orders. Plus it’ll be good riddance to have you gone.” He laughed. knocking on the large double doors marked with a golden plaque. The plaque read: F5. “Come in.” A voice called, and he swung the doors open.
“I have brought Ayano Mizuki.” he announced, bringing me forward. From the corner of my eye I could see Matsushima smile. “Good. Leave now, return to class.” Sato said, dismissing him. The boy bowed and left the room. And now I was alone. And probably screwed.
“So, Ayano Mizuki, righ?” Sato said from his large desk. “Yes...” I nodded, nervous. “Sou told us about things you said outside of school.” He said, his smile getting more and more malicious by the second.  “What were they again Sou?” Shori asked.
“Narcissists, spoiled, don’t understand respect.” Matsushima listed. “She’s the commoner girl isn’t she?” Kikuchi said, focused on writing.  “Yes. The infamous commoner of Kaisei.” Nakajima nodded, looking up from his book to glance at me. “So commoner, you know why you’re here don’t you?” Sato crossed his arms and leaned back.
“You want me to leave the school?” I whispered. “That would be nice, but Matsushima here had a better idea. We got some intel on you and your current situation. We want to make a deal with you.” He said, holding out some papers.
It was a very official looking contract with my name on it.
I, Ayano Mizuki, agree to become the loyal servant of the F5 until they graduate. Conditions: In turn to the agreement the F5 will grant her immunity to all red notices, and her family will be pampered with luxuries.
If Ayano Mizuki chooses to decline, she will be given an immediate red notice and those in relation to her will be doomed. Bla bla bla bla.
The rest weren’t important, but I frowned. The contract was very unprofessional. “Your servant? What does that even mean?” I raised my voice a little, agitated. They were giving me no choice on the matter!
“We thought you may ask that, so we decided that you can have a one week trial of what it would be like to be our servant, before officially deciding.” Sato smirked.
Just then the door opened. “Hey!- Oh.” The energetic voice of Marius Yo dwindled into a low hum as he saw what he had interrupted. “Marius, bad timing as always.” Kikuchi remarked, laughing slightly.
“Whatever.” he huffed, sitting down on his desk. Sato cleared his throat. “Well, your decision please.” he remarked.
I gritted my teeth.  “I’ll try it out for one week, but let me read ALL the details of this first.” I demanded. “As you wish. Sou?” Sato looked to the photographer, who pulled out more papers and handed it to him. Sato gave me the papers. “Go ahead and read these.” He pointed to the wooden chair sitting in a corner.  “Sit there and read. Be quick, we don’t have much time.”
I read and read and read and read. It didn’t seem to bad. The contract stated that it wouldn’t interfere with times outside of school, unless it was a huge emergency. I had 10 sick days I could use to be exempted from serving them for a day. If I ran out of sick days to excuse myself, any other misses will have to be made up outside of school.
I stood up again. “You’re done?” Sato said, smirking as he took the papers back from me. “Sign here.” Marius said, handing me the contract and a pen. “I haven’t agreed to it yet.” I frowned. “You will anyway!” He teased, laughing.
I sighed, taking the pen from him and signing my name. “Great! You start tomorrow!” Marius smiled widely. “Wait, what about the trial?” My eyes widened. “You already signed the contract! You should’ve asked for a trial first.” Matsushima laughed. I glared, upset at myself for getting fooled so easily by such shitty people. “Now you can leave. See you tomorrow, maid.” Matsushima smiled and Marius showed me to the door.
“Sou you’re insane.” Kikuchi muttered as I left the room. “Whatever! You all are thanking me for this.” He shrugged. “She is cute!” Marius gushed, sitting down at his desk. Sato sighed. “You guys always play around so easily.”
“Are you serious!?” Rika exclaimed as I relayed what had happened today. I nodded, my face mournful as I scooped some ice cream for the one lonely customer. He took the ice cream and left the shop, leaving the two of us in silence again. “With a contract and everything? That’s so-” She paused, trying to think of words to say. “It was a terribly written contract though. Completely unprofessional.” I laughed a little, sighing.
“Was it really?” someone asked as they opened the door, the bell tinkling. We both turned our heads to see F5′s Marius Yo there, smiling as usual. “Was the contract unprofessional?” he smiled, walking up to the counter to scan the ice cream. “Yes...” I replied subduedly, nodding my head.
“I knew it! Shori always does that.” He exclaimed, exasperated. “Would you like something sir?” Rika chirped, hoping to make another sale. He nods. “I’ll take the usual.” he said, smiling. “Usual...?” Rika looked perplexed.
I handed her the notepad where different workers had put down what customers’ “usual” was. “Oh, chocolate and butterscotch?” she read, looking to Marius for confirmation. He nodded. Rika proceeded to scoop his ice cream. “You come here often?” I asked, trying to make small talk. He just nodded in response.
“Funny, I never see you.” I shrugged, “And I’m here almost everyday after school.” “I usually come during school lunchtime.” He finally responded. Ah, that’s why. Wait he can leave during lunch? Of course he can! He’s F5. I mentally groaned. “Here’s your ice cream sir.” Rika handed him the ice cream and rang up the bill. He paid and left the shop, but not before saying,  “See you tomorrow, maid!” To Be Continued (It was supposed to be one whole post but it’s too long, whoopsies)

Bitterness of Youth, 1974 dir. Tatsumi Kumashiro
Tumblr media
status: completed download here
*translation notes*
・Tomiko refers to Kenichiro as “sensei”, which as probably most are already aware, means “teacher”. It’s quite a common word to use in Japanese, even just to show respect to an elder, but to portray the rigidity it often comes across as, I chose to use the word “professor”.
・The movie takes place in the early 1970s, a period that saw a deterioration in the student leftist activist movement in Tokyo that flared up in the late 50s, and after many ups and downs came to a head at the end of the 1960s. The post-war student movement was a large-scale and incredibly complex one, and was comprised of many beliefs and motivations. Although the protests and riots that occurred from the late 50s through to the 60s were mainly centred around the Ampo treaty - re: Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan - by the early 1970s, the movement had seen many failures and setbacks, and though there were ongoing protests against university campus policy as well as larger scale anti-nationalism and anti-Vietnam War sentiments, there was a growing sense of hopelessness and nihilism.
This kind of social background plays a relatively major role in understanding “Bitterness of Youth” on a deeper thematic scale, so further reading is highly recommended. A quick google search for “Japan student activism” brings up some good Wikipedia articles, or you could dive into this great and comprehensive article by Eiji Oguma: http://apjjf.org/2015/13/11/Oguma-Eiji/4300.html
・On that note, there is a scene that mentions the Communist Alliance (referred to in Japanese as ‘bund’, the German word for ‘league’ or ‘faction’). This is again a tricky part to both translate and convey meaning in English at the same time, but in brief, it refers to the leftist student movement as a whole - often using the general term ‘Zengakuren’ - that was eventually divided into smaller sects and factions over the decade or so; when Ono mentions “Central CA”, I take it to mean a central sector of the Zengakuren (or Communist Alliance) as a whole. (It’s complicated.)
・The footage of a speech by a politician being made to a large crowd seems to be real footage, and although I’m not sure who exactly is speaking (I could find out if I did some research but I haven’t had time yet), they’re talking about opposing the “Reconstruction of the Japanese Archipelago” political measure, which was introduced by controversial Liberal Democratic Party politician Kakuei Tanaka. There isn’t much information in English about this particular policy, but from the Japanese wikipedia page, it seems like it was a large scale plan to industrialize more of countryside Japan in an effort to reduce over-population, amongst other things.
・The scene where Yasuko and her boyfriend are harassed on the street by a girl only to be rescued by Kenichiro was filmed during a typical day in Shinjuku in the 70s, and the group of hippies that come to pick a fight with the group are in actual fact real people. That part of the scene was unplanned. Thinking that a hippie friend of theirs was in trouble, they burst onto the scene, throwing punches, and the actor playing Kenichiro thought it was all part of the act, so he ran with it - it was such a raw moment that they kept it in the film. (source)
・The song that Kenichiro hums to himself periodically is an old Japanese fisherman’s folksong from the Miyagi prefecture called “Saitarabushi” (although not many people remember the actual name, so they just call it “Matsushima”, like Kenichiro does in the movie). The “ei-ya to-to, ei-ya to-to..” motif is meant to evoke the rhythmic work of the fisherman (I believe). Take a listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU9ydhHSG6s
・Maki Asakawa appears in the film, playing basically herself - a bar singer with a smoky voice. A well-respected folk/rock/experimental musician at the time. she sings a version of “Puka-puka”, a relatively famous folk song, as well as an acoustic version of “Chicchana Toki Kara”, which was somewhat of a hit song for her (and for movie trivia fans - you may recognise it from a pivotal scene in the fantastic Toshiaki Toyoda film “9 Souls”). Later, you can hear her song “Kamome” as well. She’s a great singer - I highly recommend checking her out...
・Toward the end of the film Kenichiro’s friend mentions the “age of co-inhabiting”. This is a common phrase that was coined to refer to the sudden increase in unmarried couples living together in the 70s, something that was rather unprecedented in previous years.

SHUUKA. 22. 7/11 CASHIER. TELEKINETIC.
based off of the movie ‘carrie’. for most of her life, matsushima shuuka was deemed an outcast by her peers. no one quite knows how she or her mother came about, especially nothing of shuuka’s father -- who her mother absolutely refuses to speak of. what they do know is that her mother came from a psychiatric facility and is a born again christian, spouting the word to anyone who will listen. being the minority religion in japan, hardly anyone will. growing up in a small town, word travels fast and shuuka was often picked on for things that her mother did. because her mother pestered the neighbors and the school. because her mother forced her to dress a certain way and present herself a certain way. shuuka grew up reclusive and hardly spoke to anyone without being spoken to first. she was fine living like that, if no one spoke to her then no one would pick on her. it was best that way.
telekinesis was an ability discovered when she was just twelve years old. some brat on a bike was close to purposely running over a dog on the street, while shuuka was too far to save it. when the bike first swerved and the kid fell off, she thought that maybe it was a coincidence. when she tested this later by trying to make a penny fly to the wall in her room, she had known that this was something real. the girl went to the library to read up on it studiously, but knew that this was something her mother couldn’t know. if she knew, she would brand shuuka as a demon and beat her. or lock her in the closet for god knows how long, like she did before with punishments. shuuka wanted to learn how to control this ability, especially so it wouldn’t slip in front of the last person she wanted it to.
upon her third year of high school, shuuka garnered an admirer. she thought nothing of him and put off his advance, either ignoring him or verbally speaking her refusals. he didn’t seem to listen, so shuuka ignored him. for nearly a year, he proceeded to stalk her at school and even to her home. she’d caught him peering from behind a building, or a tree, or anything while she took walks home. even if she went another way, he’d eventually find out. he bothered her at school, which the other teens would tease her about. shuuka spoke to the principal and the boy was warned, but he would only stay away for short periods of time until beginning again. it was useless, so she put up with it. while graduation day was creeping up, he had approached her again to confess -- to which she, once again, refused. that time, he didn’t want to take no for an answer. that time, shuuka accomplished the greatest feat her power ever conjured up; throwing a human from a seven story building. of course, he died and shuuka was questioned about the incident. in the end, it was ruled a suicide; due to the window already being open and the boy’s known history of stalking shuuka.
her life was finally back to some normalcy, in a sense. the students still teased her, although even harder than before. those who didn’t tease her were scared of her, thinking she really did murder the boy -- which she had. her mother, for the first time, coddled her and took things easy on shuuka. she told shuuka to be glad he was dead and that men would only bring evil to their lives. however, none of this made her feel any less guilty. the day after graduation, shuuka ran away from home with nothing but the clothes on her back. her intentions were clear as she made her way to the bridge and took off her shoes. she was going to die. she wanted to die.
a life for a life. despite the vile thing that student had tried to do her, she couldn’t shake it from her mind that she killed someone. in self defense or not. that, toppled with the lifetime of teasing, shuuka couldn’t take. and, yet, as she stood on the bridge’s rails...she couldn’t bring herself to move.
she wanted to live.
no one saved her that day. shuuka stepped down from the rails herself and put back on her sneakers. she went back home, but only to fill a duffle bag with her most prized possessions and some money. to this day, she can’t tell you why she ran away from home. to escape her mother. to start a new life, one where she isn’t an outcast killer. because she was a foolish teenager. it could be any of those. she wandered the streets until hitting the next town. then the next after that, staying at cheap motels or in a safe spot on the streets. eventually, she landed a job at a 7/11 -- in which the owner happened to have a room for rent in the apartment complex near the store. she took the room and has been working at that same place ever since.

What’s Wrong With You? Bakugou x OC info and ch. 1
Sorry if you don’t like oc fanfic, it was on my wattpad so Imma just post it
Name: Yoko Mitsushima Nickname: Yo-chan (by Izuku) Age: 13-15
Quirk: Yoko has Air Manipulation, basically she can control (or manipulate) the air around her. If there is a harmful gas she can use the air to disperse it so there isn't enough to harm anyone to bad. (Does that even make sense? lol) She uses her quirk to "fly" by pushing air under her feet and into the air. She can also move very fast due to her air quirk. This quirk is very strong, but if she reaches her limit she will be out of breath and have a major headache and possibly faint.
Personality:
-kind and friendly
- patient but once she gets mad, she is just like bakugou
- everyone thinks she is badass and really pretty
- she is occasionally shy but stands up for herself and friends
- she hates "bakagou"
-otaku
Likes:
-anime
-manga
-fanfic
- video games
-friends
-goofing off
Dislikes:
-bakugou
-villains
-spiders
-stress
Appearance: - light brown hair put up in pigtails  - sky blue eyes -short - thigh highs with the UA uniform  - small frame -round face
Backstory: Yoko Matsushima was five when her parents abandoned her for being quirk-less. little did they know, not more than a month later she developed the quirk "air manipulation". She was being attacked by a man when it was developed, she accidentally took the air out of his lungs and he almost died. After that, she didn't use her quirk around anyone else but instead trained alone in alleyways and deserted buildings until she was around ten and gained confidence. After the incident with her quirk, A woman named Inko Midoriya and her son Izuku adopted her. Yoko and Izuku became the best of friends. Izuku was fascinated by Yoko and her quirk and he was the only one she was comfortable training with. Katsuki Bakugou hated these two and constantly tortured them, saying they were quirkless losers.
Story:
"She's nothing but a quirkless child." Yoko's mother Akari said in a hushed tone but loud enough for her daughter to her in the next room. "But how would we get rid of the damn pest?" Yoko's father Fujio says a little bit louder.
This brought the five year old girl to tears. "Why don't we just kill her? she's gonna die any way, the worlds better off if she just goes now!" Akari began to shout, in a hurry to get rid of her child. "If we do that they'll know it was us, lets just dump her on the side of the road." Fujio proposed.
The only reason the small child's parents waited so long to throw her out was in hopes she had a great quirk. they were villains with quirks allowing them to control gasses, but not air. the perfect addition would be air manipulation. But their only daughter was quirkless.
LATER THAT DAY
Yoko was thrown into the alleyway by her parent harshly, causing her to get scrapes and bruises as they calmly walked off. "Where are you going! Mommy!? Daddy!?" The poor girl yells after them weakly. Even though she was young, she knew it was for the best.
LATER THAT MONTH
"Stop it!!! Someone! HELP!" Yoko Matsushima screamed in hopes of being saved from the man that was attacking her. He was in his early thirties and had a clean shaven face with sleeked back ebony hair. He was in an expensive suit, as if he was a business man. All of a sudden, when the girl raised her hand in an attempt to protect herself, the fan began choking on nothing. It was as if all the air had been sucked out of his lungs.
As someone passed by the area that this was going on, they ran to the scene and helped the man to the open and away from the little girl. Like magic, the man could breath again. "She's a monster! that little punk tried to kill me with her quirk!" Proclaimed the business man. "H-hes lying! he t-tried to hurt me!! I d-dont even have a quirked!" Cried Yoko as she bursted into tears.
The man was taken to the hospital along with the girl where he was rushed off to get his vitals checked and she was checked for a quirk (A/N: is that even how it works?)
After a lot of waiting with a nice nurse who talked to the girl and another family who was waiting for some results, the doctor came back. "Good news Mitsushima! It turns out, you developed your quirk late and you have an Air Manipulation quirk! This is one of the best quirks there is!" The doctor exclaimed to Yoko. "What about my son?" Questioned the mother of the boy next to her who she presumed to be a boy named Izuku Midoriya. The doctors face fell. "Well, your son, seems to not have a quirk. You see, those who have quirks seem to have only one joint in their little toe because they are more evolved. Your son, however, happens to have two joints in that toe. it is unlikely he will have a quirk." As the doctor went on, Yoko could tell that Izuku was devastated by this news.
LATER
As everyone was getting ready to leave the room, the nurse asked "Where can I find your parents Matsushima?" Which made the young girl, who was already sad for Izuku, begin to cry. In between sobs, she explained "M-my parents left me a while ago.." "Oh my word! we can take you in dear!" proclaimed Izuku's mother once she heard the full story.
(A/N): This was actually the first fanfic I ever wrote so, enjoy!
