Homeless NDA Ministers
IMC WEB DESK NEW DELHI: Indian politics defines transition. Elections saw Modi as the PM heading NDA-led coalition government. Soon after, former Union Ministers asked to vacate their designated homes
NDA goes through changes
Indian politics witnessed weighty changes in 2024. On 7th June 2024, Narendra Modi confirmed the support of 293 MPs to Droupadi Murmu, the President of India. This marked Modi’s third term as Prime Minister and his first-time heading NDA-led coalition government with the Telugu Desam Party of Andhra Pradesh and Janata Dal (United) of Bihar emerging as two primary alliances.
A noticeable step taken by the Directorate of Estates (DoE) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) surely makes up for a sweeping swap!
DoE served a notice to few of the former Union Ministers in Indian Politics to vacate their official accommodation in Delhi’s Lutyens’ by 10 July as requests for accommodation pour in from newly appointed ministers.
All Union ministers and ministers of state (MoS) in Indian politics are entitled to a ‘Type VIII’ bungalow in Delhi’s Lutyens’. Former ministers have to vacate such an accommodation when they lose their ministerial berth, according to the DoE rules.
NDA-led coalition government have removed thirty-seven formers ministers in from Narendra Modi’s Union Council of Ministers. Indian politics stands synonymous to shifting gears.
Significant leaders in Indian politics namely Smriti Irani, Arjun Munda, R.K Singh, Niranjan Jyoti, Sanjeev Balyan, and Rajeev Chandrashekhar, lost in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Others, such as Anurag Thakur, Narayan Rane, and Parshottam Rupala, won but did not get a ministerial berth this time. Some, such as Meenakshi Lekhi, did not get a ticket to contest the polls as the BJP replaced them with new faces. When the nation asks what is politics, well this is the face of real Indian Politics.
The DoE notice will be followed by a show cause notice eventually leading to an eviction notice.
Indian politics is often referred as the dance of democracy! While few ministers might still be showing unwillingness to vacate, there are others who have been upfront in changing their designated accommodation.
Former Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who was served with an eviction notice by the Directorate of Estates recently, has also conveyed that he would be vacating the 27, Safdarjung Road bungalow.
Lutyens-Landmark in Indian Politics
Spread across an area of 23.60sqkm, The Lutyens Bungalow Zone is home to the luminaries of Indian Politics as well as high-net-worth individuals with about 3000 government-owned bungalows.
Serving NDA Union ministers were eligible for accommodation as allotted by the DoE. House committees of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats are the competent authorities to allot accommodation to MPs.
Members are entitled to a licence-fee free flat or hostel accommodation throughout their term of office.
Members are entitled to water supply without payment of charges up to 4000 kl per annum. They are eligible for electricity up to 50,000 units (25,000 units measure on light meter and 25,000 units on power meter or pooled together) per annum beginning from January 1 every year.
Other facilities include- washing of sofa covers and curtains every three months. Furniture within the monetary ceiling of Rs 60,000 in respect of durable furniture.
They are also allowed for a 25 per cent remission in the rent on account of any improvement or addition made to it or any additional service provided thereto by way of furniture, electrical equipment and other services.
Editor’s Note
Around 50 former union ministers and MPs from the last Lok Sabha have been sent notice by DoE to vacate their official accommodation. Home is always closest to ones heart and when it is in the poshest locality of the capital and earned through valid eligibility, the address caries a myriad of meaning for the resident. Apparently it is just might be a regular governmental procedure but delving deep, slight feeling uprootedness might haunt souls of Indian politics.

The party alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had done this to distract from the issue of Union home minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha earlier this week. Speaking to ANI, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also spoke about the first information report (FIR) filed against Rahul Gandhi. The MP from Rae Bareli is accused of pushing two BJP MPs, who sustained injuries. “Delhi Police will do whatever the Home Minister will say them…Whatever happened in front of the Makar Dwar was completely planned…” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said. “The home minister insulted BR Ambedkar and we all demanded an apology…They planned all this to distract the issue…He (the Home Minister) should have apologised…This FIR was not against Rahul Gandhi, this is against BR Ambedkar…” he added. Chaos in Parliament Ugly scenes unfolded in Parliament on Thursday after the BJP and the Congress accused each other of assault and shoving. Two BJP MPs sustained injuries, and a woman MP claimed intimidation by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The Congress refuted the allegations and said BJP legislators blocked Rahul Gandhi’s way and pushed Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, injuring him in the knee. At around 4pm, Congress leaders wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, saying that Rahul Gandhi was “manhandled by at least 3 BJP MPs” and requested the Speaker to take the matter with utmost seriousness and take appropriate action. Around the same time, a delegation of BJP leaders led by MPs Anurag Thakur, Bansuri Swaraj and Himang Joshi filed a police complaint in Parliament Street police station against the Congress MP. Following that, a delegation of Congress MPs also filed a police complaint on alleging ‘misbehaviour’ with Kharge inside the Parliament’s premises. [ad_2] Source link

The following is an excerpt from Dr. Ramesh Thakur’s book, Our Enemy, the Government: How Covid Enabled the Expansion and Abuse of State Power.
Africa and the pandemic panic: Facts not fear
Africa is at risk of getting the worst of both worlds: failure to check the epidemic and failure to check economic collapse. Why?
First, because of a lack of state capacity, most African countries lack the administrations and health systems to implement and enforce “test, isolate, treat, and trace” regimes. What exactly does social distancing mean if you live in sprawling informal settlements that characterise almost all major cities in the developing world. Second, the dominance of the informal sectors and extreme dependence on daily wages to keep families afloat mean that economic disasters will deepen the misery of millions and multiply illnesses and deaths.https://read.amazon.com/kp/card?asin=B0CL99S2K6&preview=inline&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_QDM55S6EBAEXSSD67K1H
SARS-CoV-2 emerged through a chain not yet fully grasped in Wuhan, China and hitched a ride on the world’s flyways to insinuate itself into the very interstices of globalisation and spread rapidly to Iran, Europe, and North America. As at 15 May, the total number of Covid-19 (the disease caused by the virus) cases was 4.5 million and over 300,000 people had died with it worldwide. By any criterion, that is a serious pandemic.
But in perspective, the annual global deaths from leading causes is: coronary diseases 8.7 million, stroke 6.2 million, lung cancers and diseases 4.8 million, influenza and pneumonia 3.2 million, diabetes 1.6 million, and diarrhoea and tuberculosis 1.4 million each. So coronavirus does not represent the end of the world. People suffer but endure. This virus too shall pass and indeed is on the way down almost everywhere.
As of 13 May, the total number killed with Covid-19 in the 55 countries that make up the African Union was 2,382, or an average of 43 and a median of just 10 deaths per country. Algeria and Egypt are the only countries to record over 500 deaths. If we exclude them, the average falls to 1.3 deaths/week per country. That should not be enough to make it even to the inside pages of most newspapers, let alone disrupt life as we know it through massive shutdowns.

Daughter-in-law From Hell by Ramesh Thakur
"But what if the interview has damaged the prospects of this happening? Now that would be karma."
The cruel mother-in-law is a familiar and popular trope all over the world, not far behind the stepmother as a proxy for the evil witch. Curiously, there’s no alternative, counter-balancing trope of a cynical, calculating and manipulative daughter-in-law who rents asunder the existing close bonds in a family.
I was born in India after independence and grew up in a free republic. Even while absorbing many of the idioms and iconic stories from our British political-education legacy, we were also socialised into the anti-British strains of the independence struggle and viewed many familiar historical milestones through completely different lens. This came together in a popular explanation for why the sun never set on the British Empire: because even God would not trust an Englishman in the dark. In the second half of the last century, that ambivalence was transferred to the Americans and best captured in the placard being waved by the anti-Vietnam War protestor in the streets of Calcutta during my university days there: ‘Yankee! Go home – and take me with you’.
On the other hand, I left Calcutta (since renamed Kolkata) for Canada and in the course of my wanderings have lived and worked, among other places, in New Zealand and Australia and collected citizenships in all three. This means I have sworn the oath of loyalty to Her Majesty three times in her capacity as the Queen of Canada, New Zealand and Australia. I feel impelled accordingly to defend her and ‘the Firm’ against the attacks from Meghan Markle in the infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey. Full disclosure: I have not watched the interview, not even a minute of it, and have no intention of doing so. My comments are based on accounts of it in print.
To start with, the Queen’s life is a story of duty to country and the multiracial Commonwealth carried out with unfailing grace, dignity and decorum. Between the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex, who does and does not fit in with this lifestyle? To ask the question is to answer it. Markle gives the impression she had a glamourised vision of what marrying into the royal family would be like. The measure of self-discipline and onerous restrictions on independence and personal freedoms proved too suffocating, which is easy enough to understand. The press can indeed behave with no sense of moral compass, violate peoples’ privacy – who can forget the phone-hacking scandals – and turn viciously on someone. But the search for privacy taking her to a tell-all interview with the Queen of TV that turned out to be a self-indulgent settling of scores? A couple that has complained loudly about press intrusions was happy to wash the family laundry in public for millions of viewers. Their remarks and ‘revelations’ were calculated to inflict the maximum damage on her husband’s family. No matter what the provocation, that is unforgiveable. She has a long history of manipulating the media to boost her celebrity status. She can make truly awful accusations against her in-laws. No proof required. The warmth with which she was welcomed by the family – remember the touching scene when Prince Charles walked her down the wedding aisle owing to the absence of her father? – as well as press and people, makes the charge of racism implausible.
Why say things without substantiation that will make the estrangement from his family irreparable? Because she names no names, provides no context and fails to specify exactly what was said, the entire royal family is smeared and that too on the flimsiest of reasoning. This is not courageous but cowardly. Someone wondered about the skin colour of the child while he was still in the womb. Well cry me a river in a $20 million mansion in Santa Barbara. As an inter-racial family that is increasingly common in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US, we wondered the same about our children and speculated on it on multiple occasions. And repeated the experience with the next generation. As soon as this article is done, I’m off to enrol myself in cultural re-education class to exorcise this deep-seated unconscious racism. So, sorry, but until and unless we are provided with some context and specificity about who made the remark, that sounds like interested curiosity rather than malicious racism.
Along with racism, mental health and thoughts (ideation, in the current jargon) of suicide have been weaponised by wannabe victims in the proliferating grievance culture. I’m afraid for once my instincts are similar to those of Piers Morgan. President Joe Biden has praised Markle’s courage for talking openly about feeling suicidal. But the charge that the pleas for help of a five-month pregnant Duchess of Sussex expressing suicidal thoughts would be dismissed with the comment that it ‘wouldn’t be good for the institution’ is, on the face of it, implausible. Once again, we need more specificity and context. On its own, this simply doesn’t ring true. Who was that callous palace official? What stopped the couple from seeking treatment directly from the several mental health charities with which they are connected?
In the interview Markle claimed her son not being a prince ‘would be different from protocol’. Displaying the racial prism through which she views everything, Markle said Archie is ‘the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be’. This is factually wrong as well as incendiary. Someone so conscious of titles should know that her son cannot be called a prince at present. Under existing rules going back to 1917, the titles of prince and princess are limited to children of the monarch, children of the monarch’s sons and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. In other words, Archie cannot be prince with the Queen as monarch but will be due the title if and when Prince Charles becomes King.
"But what if the interview has damaged the prospects of this happening? Now that would be karma."
