Rambi's not so good at playing volleyball, but that doesn't mean he isn't a terrifying force to go up against! His high power and speed means there's no running from him - he's gonna hit you, and he's gonna hit you HARD! Just make sure there's some more defense-based teammates to make up for his weaknesses

A demo for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is now available for Switch via Nintendo eShop, Nintendo announced.

Stomp, Blast, and Roll Across Donkey Kong Island

Platform your way across DK Island’s vibrant and obstacle-filled levels. You’ll be stomping and rolling through environments ranging from jungle to volcano.

Swing Into Action as Donkey Kong – Some levels will have you swinging on vines, blasting through barrels,

or riding things like mine carts, rockets, and Rambi the Rhino.

Deal With Obstacles and Enemies the DK Way – Execute moves like Ground Pound, Roll, Blow, and Grab and Cling.

Work Together to Find Those Bananas!

Meet the Top Bananas

Play as Donkey Kong or join the fun as Diddy Kong in two-player local co-op to take down the evil Tiki Tak tribe. You’ll meet some wild characters along the way!

Donkey Kong (playable) – This powerful Kong goes absolutely bananas when it comes to jumping and pounding. He wears a fancy tie, but he still likes to crash through branches and boxes in the jungle.

Diddy Kong (playable) – He might look harmless to jungle baddies, but this small Kong is a peanut-popping powerhouse! He can ride on Donkey Kong’s back and blast his buddy to new heights with his Rocket Barrel.

Cranky Kong – Stooped in stature but sizeable in spirit, the curmudgeonly Cranky Kong runs a shop which supplies Donkey Kong with the items needed to rid the jungle of banana-nabbing baddies.

Rambi – Donkey Kong can smash his way through a box or two, but he needs this rambunctious rhino to power through stone blocks (and the occasional enemy).

Tiki Tak Tribe – This troublesome tribe can’t mask their thieving nature. With a bit of hocus pocus, these musical hypnotists can turn the gentle beasts of the jungle into fearsome foes.

Squawks – A brightly colored bird which can be purchased with in-game coins in Cranky Kong’s shop. Squawks will let you know when puzzle pieces are nearby.

Professor Chops – This helpful porcine offers tips as you make your way through each level. He will indicate the halfway point where your progress is saved.

Explore, Collect, and Unlock

Search every inch of the jungle to uncover special items and unlock extras.

K-O-N-G Letters – Letters spelling K-O-N-G are spaced throughout each level. Collect all the letters in all the stages of a world to unlock that world’s temple, where a Rare Orb can be found.

Puzzle Pieces – Puzzle pieces are hidden in out-of-the-way places. Get all the puzzle pieces in a level to unlock something in the gallery.

Two Ways to Play

Play the game as it was first designed for the Wii system or reduce the difficulty for extra hearts and other goodies to make your journey a little easier.

I think it's worth pointing out that despite the park being largley based off of Retro Studios Donkey Kong games, Rambi the Rhino is still using the design he used in the Rare games and the Paon games, despite having been redesigned by Retro Studios ( for the worse imo )

Does this mean anything? I don't know, but I do feel like it reinforces my idea that maybe things will look a little like they did in the Paon era than they did in the Retro era when the series makes it's inevitable return. And I don't just mean visually, I am kind of expecting the Status Quo to go back to what it was before Jungle Beat... I mean Paon, not rare. I think there's still going to be some losses.

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are back for some ground-pounding action in this high-definition version of Donkey Kong Country Returns, originally released on the Wii system. The villainous Tiki Tak Tribe has stolen Donkey Kong’s precious banana hoard and the Kongs are barreling after them in pursuit! Play solo, or with a buddy in local two-player co-op in an adventure brimming with hijinks where you can stomp obstacles, send mine carts careening, fly high on rocket barrels and even hitch a ride on Rambi the Rhino. Experience 80 a-peel-ing levels, including the additional ones from the Nintendo 3DS version.

one of the joys of making art of obscure things is being able to instantly recognize said obscure thing when they occasionally pop up. for example I did a bunch of emblems based on Rambi's crate in Returns and Tropical Freeze, so i INSTANTLY recognized when that emblem was on DK's kart in the new poster.

The first two major areas of DK Island are relatively simple and easy so there's not too much to talk about

The second level is one of two Mine Cart stages in this game, which have become a bit of an infamous staple of the series, though in this game they're not so hard (unlike the ones in DKC2....). They do however highlight a recurring issue with these games, that being that the character and enemy sprites are too big, giving the games a sort of "zoomed in" look, which can bite you in the ass whenever you find yourself going fast as this gives you little time to react to off screen hazards. During my very first playthrough of this game my main cause of deaths were things coming from offscreen as I was running around. Now this is something you can get used to by playing but it's a problem that won't ever fully go away throughout the SNES trilogy

A recurring mechanic are animal buddies: in some levels you can find an animal that you can ride and exploit its abilities, they work sorta like Yoshi in Mario in that if you get hit while riding them you won't take damage but you'll get knocked off of them and they'll start running around and you can then mount them again if you're fast enough before they either off screen themselves too much or fall down a pit

In the first video I showcased Rambi the rhino, who just bulldozes over enemies, and Enguarde the swordship, who helps you during underwater stages by swimming faster and doing a dash attack

Here we see Winky the frog, who can not only jump higher than you but can also jump on enemies that the Kongs can't, like the bees. His only downside is that his hitbox can be weird...if you don't hit an enemy precisely with his legs it may not count and yoy can get hit

Expresso the ostrich is my least favorite: he's the fastest animal and can flap his wings to glide over distances, but he can't jump on enemies. He can walk over the smaller ones because I believe his feet don't have a hitbox? But his body does so depending on the angle he may still get hit and when that happens he runs so fast that it's impossible to catch up with him. This is made worse due to some later bonus rooms only being accessible by using him...

Speaking of which: I'll be completing this game 101%. What does that mean?

It means having to find all Bonus Rooms in all of the stages. Bonus rooms are usually hidden either behind breakable walls or hidden cannon barrels

I'll just say it right now: it's impossible to find them all without a guide

Yeah sometimes the game will give hints as to some of their locations, like a line of bananas being placed in a supsicious place, or an offscreen barrel being barely visible

But many other times they are hidden in extremely cryptic ways that require that you're either psychic to find them...or that you simply buy Nintendo Power. And you'll see just how bullshit some of these can get

Luckily you don't have to complete these bonus rooms, just entering them counts as adding to the percentage, and you can tell whether you've found all in a level by the presence of an exclamation point after a level's name in the overworld

What do you get for getting 101% completion? An asterisc on your save file and the game telling you that you did a good job in the ending. So no, it's not worth it in this game but Imma do it anyway
