Rambi's not so good at playing volleyball, but that doesn't mean he isn't a terrifying force to go up against! His high power and speed means there's no running from him - he's gonna hit you, and he's gonna hit you HARD! Just make sure there's some more defense-based teammates to make up for his weaknesses

Early concept art of Rambi the Rhino from Donkey Kong Country where he was intended to have a more cheerful demeanor. In the finished game and all his later appearances, Rambi appears serious and determined instead.

Well I beat Mario vs Donkey Kong... or rather, I made the credits roll.
Seems the game is not over yet though? I was told the Switch version adds two extra worlds, but I looked at footage of the GBA version and it seems like the same thing happens there. This game is longer than I thought. Will say, seeing some of the GBA footage I can see how some people are unhappy about certain changes. Mostly voice clips and animation. I do think getting rid of the fall stun was a good move though.
Very weird for them to put the credits in the middle of the game like that, I guess this is where the idea of "everybody deserves to finish the game but we also put the more challenging stuff after the credits" trend later Mario games came with may have gotten it's start ( Glad Mario Wonder didn't do that, I like the final boss to actually be the finale. )
Anyway, the game got a lot better toward the end... or should I say middle. Still not beating DK'94 though and I still dislike the toy theme. But the level design was a lot more puzzling with cooler ideas and themes in those last three worlds.
As I'm playing this I can already see myself thinking "I hope they actually make more games in this style." which is always a good sign. I really want more traditional Donkey Kong Country style games and a new 3D Donkey Kong more than anything, but it would be nice to keep the arcade roots alive as well.
If they do make another game, I hope it's more of an equal crossover and not just an Arcade DK and Mario wank fest. There's tons of references to Mario games in the form of toy versions of Shy Guys, Boos, Ninjis, Piranha Plants, and Bob-ombs, as well as 1up mushrooms. Also Toad. What does Donkey Kong get? A generic jungle setting, and a Rhino enemy that kinda evokes memories of Rambi but not really... Nah, give me a Mario vs Donkey Kong Game where 1. Donkey Kong is playable, and 2. other Kongs and Animal Buddies appear in the game. It can be DK Junior if they still have that policy where Diddy isn't allowed to be around DK when he's an antagonist, but I just want more justice for Donkey Kong in this crossover. He is not a split off splinter of the Mario universe, Mario and Donkey Kong are their own thing with a shared universe and origin and they should be repected equally in these crossovers.
Anyway, ramble over, the game... is fun.

The first two major areas of DK Island are relatively simple and easy so there's not too much to talk about
The second level is one of two Mine Cart stages in this game, which have become a bit of an infamous staple of the series, though in this game they're not so hard (unlike the ones in DKC2....). They do however highlight a recurring issue with these games, that being that the character and enemy sprites are too big, giving the games a sort of "zoomed in" look, which can bite you in the ass whenever you find yourself going fast as this gives you little time to react to off screen hazards. During my very first playthrough of this game my main cause of deaths were things coming from offscreen as I was running around. Now this is something you can get used to by playing but it's a problem that won't ever fully go away throughout the SNES trilogy
A recurring mechanic are animal buddies: in some levels you can find an animal that you can ride and exploit its abilities, they work sorta like Yoshi in Mario in that if you get hit while riding them you won't take damage but you'll get knocked off of them and they'll start running around and you can then mount them again if you're fast enough before they either off screen themselves too much or fall down a pit
In the first video I showcased Rambi the rhino, who just bulldozes over enemies, and Enguarde the swordship, who helps you during underwater stages by swimming faster and doing a dash attack
Here we see Winky the frog, who can not only jump higher than you but can also jump on enemies that the Kongs can't, like the bees. His only downside is that his hitbox can be weird...if you don't hit an enemy precisely with his legs it may not count and yoy can get hit
Expresso the ostrich is my least favorite: he's the fastest animal and can flap his wings to glide over distances, but he can't jump on enemies. He can walk over the smaller ones because I believe his feet don't have a hitbox? But his body does so depending on the angle he may still get hit and when that happens he runs so fast that it's impossible to catch up with him. This is made worse due to some later bonus rooms only being accessible by using him...
Speaking of which: I'll be completing this game 101%. What does that mean?
It means having to find all Bonus Rooms in all of the stages. Bonus rooms are usually hidden either behind breakable walls or hidden cannon barrels
I'll just say it right now: it's impossible to find them all without a guide
Yeah sometimes the game will give hints as to some of their locations, like a line of bananas being placed in a supsicious place, or an offscreen barrel being barely visible
But many other times they are hidden in extremely cryptic ways that require that you're either psychic to find them...or that you simply buy Nintendo Power. And you'll see just how bullshit some of these can get
Luckily you don't have to complete these bonus rooms, just entering them counts as adding to the percentage, and you can tell whether you've found all in a level by the presence of an exclamation point after a level's name in the overworld
What do you get for getting 101% completion? An asterisc on your save file and the game telling you that you did a good job in the ending. So no, it's not worth it in this game but Imma do it anyway

More Mario Kart icons! This time I decided to tackle Donkey Kong's animal friends, specifically the ones from the first game: Rambi, Expresso, Winky, Enguarde, and Squawks are all here and accounted for! I'd like to do the ones from the other games too, but that'll be for a different time.
All of these icons are inspired from Rambi's animal crate in Returns and Tropical Freeze!
Of course, since Rambi is the only animal friend to appear in those games, I had to do the rest on my own. I think they all came out pretty well, and I think they suit the atystyle well. I had considered basing them off of the crates from the Rare trilogy since that's where they actually appeared, but I thought this would be more fun. Maybe I'll do alternate icons for that later.
For now though, I take pride in planting the idea of a frickin' rhinoceros tearing up the Mario Kart tracks riding Mr. Scooty. Or Eunguarde trying to ride a bike with his lack of legs. Possibilities are endless!

Jooseyboy is joined in Episode 4 again by his biggest fan and harshest critic, Karlifornia, as he continues his first solo series, where he deals with a whole lot of monkeying around and rages on the #SuperNintendo with #DonkeyKongCountry - with his pals #DonkeyKong, #DiddyKong, Rambi the Rhino, Winky the Frog, Enguarde the Swordfish and more; on his quest to banana bonanza immortality.
