The Strawhat Crew vs. Ramadan (Muslim!reader)
✩.* My gift to the Muslims who acc get to fast on the first day of Ramadan (I’m so jelly omg ☹️)
✩.* Tags: Ramadan, Muslim reader, ig somewhat ignorance from the crew??
Tumblr media
“Yum!” Luffy tore into plates and plates of food before you. Since boarding the ship, you’d definitely taken a more sisterly role with him, to the point he felt the need to share his beloved food with you. “Here! Try, s’really good.” He waved a piece of meat in your face, waiting for you to take a bite.
Can’t, Lu,” You smiled awkwardly as you pushed his hand back towards his face. “Looks good though…”
Luffy’s head tilted to the side as he looked at you with pondering curiosity. “But Sanji made it just how you like.”
“I knowww,” you groaned, imagine how the meat was feel between your teeth. “But I’m fasting, I can’t eat until—“ you checked your watch. “In five hours.”
“Until in five hours?”
“Until in five hours.” You sighed. A heat emanated from the day that made you want to tear your hair out from under your headscarf. Staying inside wasn’t an option as you were scared of getting sea sick in this sudden humidity as well as the lack of ventilation.
Luffy stared at you as he chewed, pondering in awkward silence as he racked his brain on why on earth you had a limit for food. “Are you on those diet things?”
“Pardon?” You scoffed.
“Well Robin told me that sometimes girls can’t eat all the time so they can be thin, but you seem pretty thin, all your clothes are baggy on you.”
You laughed at his words before going back to dangling your feet from the side of the boat you and him were perched on. You didn’t think he was serious until you realised he wasn’t laughing. “Oh wait, you’re serious?” He nodded.
You sat there with him for a good long while, enjoying the bore of the seren blue whilst you explained. Ramadan was finally here after you’d finally made up your fasts a few days prior.
Luffy stared at you in, what you assumed, was awe. He couldn’t comprehend the idea of not eating for that long. He looked up at the sky and it seemed the sun had yet to set. Unfortunately, the warmer seasons let days drag on for what seemed like forever and he felt a little sorry for you.
He whipped his head around making sure nobody was looking before waving his snack in your face once more. “Here, eat, eat,” he used a hand to cover the side of his face, like a little kid sharing a secret. “I won’t tell your God, you can take some!”
At least he has the spirit, right?
Tumblr media
“Pardon?”
“I said I can’t eat this, Sanji,” You blinked at the taller man after he ushered you to the table to eat. You had to admit you felt slightly impolite denying tea after skipping breakfast and lunch, but Ramadan had just started and you were more determined than ever to get through this month without any problems.
The past couple of days were already spent making a few up so you’d already gotten used to the feeling, the hunger pangs subsiding. “I’m fasting.”
His eyebrows furrowed together slightly in what, you feared was, hurt. “I’m not gonna force you to eat the food if you don't want it, y’know?”
You waved your hands in defence. “I’m being so serious right now.” You assured him as best as you could.
The claims for innocence were definitely heard as the two of you spent the next 30 minutes sitting in the kitchen with you explaining the concept of Ramadan in the most intricate detail you could.
“So you don’t eat for— what— 15 to 16 hours?” His voice was husky as he hummed deep in thought about it. You nodded, happy he was finally getting it. “But couldn’t you fill yourself up with water throughout the day?”
“Nope, no water either.”
“No water?” His eyebrows raised as he looked at you with near sympathy. “Surely it gets hard, no mon cheri?”
You put a finger to your chin and thought about the best answer to give. “I mean, you get used to it after the first day, and I’ve been doing it for a while now I’m used to it!”
Sanji had spent the rest of his day thinking of ways to make your iftar one to remember, with new found determination once you’d told him that this cycle would continue for a month straight.
He buzzed around you, making sure to take notes of what you wanted to eat and ignoring Luffy’s pouted requests of any meat dish.
“C’mon you can listen to Luffy,” you smiled as you chuckled at his frown. “Besides, anything you make will be sufficient.”
He sighed. “You sure?”
“100 percent
Tumblr media
You sat with Robin in the shaded area of the deck. Your head rested on her lap as she read her book, her hand idly running across the top of your hijab. Robin was the big sister you never had. She was so smart and pretty (mashallah), you couldn’t help but look up to her and she relished in the fact she could and would protect you. She saw a little bit of herself in you, something she’d never let you get wind of.
“Say, what do you plan to eat for Iftar? I don’t think we have dates.” She hummed.
You blinked up at her, groggy and head spinning, disoriented due to the weird “nap” you were pulling in and out of. “Huh?”
“It is Ramadan today, no?”
“Yeah…” you rubbed your eyes and sat up. “Yeah! It is!” You smiled, almost as if you’d forgotten why you were so hungry.
She laughed at you before helping you up. “Well we can make a stop quickly at the next island and see if we can pick up some dates, hm?”
“Yes please!”
Robin made it her mission to try and formulate the perfect Iftar for you with the help of Sanji. She read what she had to read and jotted down every vitamin and mineral you should have for the perfect balance.
She observed your prayer, had you teach her a little Quran and by the end of the day, her head was steaming with information she was previously oblivious to.
She had the widest, cutest smile on her face during Iftar, in which the whole crew tried not to eat in front of you.
“Why do you look so chipper?” You chuckled, nudging her arm as she bit into a samosa.
“I love Ramadan.”

Donald and Daisy with their kids (Huey, Dewey and Louie and April, May and June Duck) celebrate Easter - Disneyland Easter Celebration and Easter Costumes - Happy Birthday to Huey, Dewey and Louie - Duck comics and Duckverse
Happy Easter to everyone and if someone asks me, I know that it has passed, but Easter is not celebrated only on one day, but depending on the calendar it can be celebrated twice (Gregorian and Julian calendar), and it is usually celebrated when Jewish Passover and Muslim Ramadan Eid in progress.
As you know, Easter is celebrated because on that day Jesus Christ, after the third day since he died on the cross, was resurrected from the dead and proved that there is life after death, only faith is needed for that (whoever believes, let someone believe) and most Christians celebrate it, although it depends on the calendar when exactly it is celebrated. And usually the symbols are decorated colored eggs (especially red), chicks hatching from eggs, also ducks, as well as Easter bunnies that bring gifts for good children. I'm not a fan of Disneyland, nor am I a fanatic, although Disneyland in Tokyo in Japan makes good events, including for Easter when the mascots dress up in Easter costumes.
Yes, as inspired by the images from Disneyland Tokyo I drew Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck (Donald's nephews) as well as April, May and June Duck (Daisy's nieces-the Dutch comic version of Donald Duck) in Easter costumes, with the fact that I added costumes for Daisy's nieces in my own way. I did a redraw from an actual representation of the triplets mascots from Disneyland holding the Easter eggs they made and carrying them over their heads. Unless they break it. Just like their uncle Donald, Daisy and her nieces also lay eggs, as well as keep the chicks that hatched from the eggs, as well as the Easter bunny. I drew mostly in my own way.
I hope you like this drawing and this idea and feel free to like and reblog this, just please don't copy my same ideas without mentioning me! Thank you! Also, happy birthday to Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, who celebrate on April 15th! Happy birthday to them, the best trio! And happy Easter to everyone!
And yes, this is a gift for my friend, dear @boingodigitalart , who is a Disneyland fan and I hope you like this. Happy late Easter!

It's a time to celebrate with food, family get-togethers, and gift-giving as a way of showing gratitude and love. Creating a DIY Eid gift basket according to the recipient's preferences is one of the most creative ways to express your love and affection this Eid.
Tumblr media
Introduction to DIY Eid Gift Baskets
Eid gift baskets are a delightful way to express your love and appreciation for friends and family during the festive season. These personalized baskets are filled with carefully chosen items that cater to the recipient's interests, making them a truly meaningful and memorable gift.
During Eid, the act of giving holds special significance, reflecting the spirit of generosity and compassion embodied by the occasion. By crafting a DIY Eid gift basket, you not only showcase your creativity but also convey your heartfelt wishes to your loved ones.
Choosing the Right Theme for Your Eid Gift Basket
When creating a DIY Eid gift basket, it's essential to consider the recipient's preferences and interests. Whether they're a food enthusiast, a beauty lover, or a bookworm, tailoring the theme of the basket to suit their tastes adds a personal touch to your gift.
Traditional themes inspired by Eid motifs and symbols can evoke a sense of cultural pride and nostalgia, while modern themes infused with contemporary elements offer a fresh and stylish twist to the traditional gift-giving tradition.
Essential Components of a DIY Eid Gift Basket
A well-curated Eid gift basket should contain a mix of items that cater to both the recipient's practical needs and their indulgent desires. From delectable treats and gourmet delights to luxurious self-care products and thoughtful trinkets, each component contributes to the overall appeal of the basket.
In addition to selecting high-quality gifts, don't forget to embellish your basket with Eid-themed decorations and accents, such as festive ribbons, sparkling ornaments, and handwritten notes conveying your warm wishes.
Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Eid Gift Basket
Creating a DIY Eid gift basket is a fun and rewarding process that allows you to unleash your creativity. Follow these simple steps to craft a beautiful and personalized gift basket that will delight your loved ones:
Gathering Necessary Supplies: Start by selecting a suitable basket or container to hold your gifts. Gather a variety of items that reflect the chosen theme of your basket, including treats, trinkets, and decorations.
Assembling the Basket: Arrange the items in your basket in an aesthetically pleasing manner, keeping in mind balance and symmetry. Layer the larger items at the back and fill any empty spaces with smaller items or decorative filler.
Adding Personal Touches: Customize your basket by incorporating personal touches, such as handwritten notes, custom-made items, or photos that hold sentimental value. Consider including a heartfelt message or card to convey your warm wishes and blessings.
Creative Ideas for DIY Eid Gift Baskets
The possibilities for DIY Eid gift baskets are endless, allowing you to tailor your gifts to suit the preferences and personalities of your recipients. Here are some creative ideas to inspire your gift-giving endeavors:

Spa and Relaxation Baskets: Treat your loved ones to a pampering experience with a spa-themed basket featuring luxurious bath products, scented candles, and plush robes for ultimate relaxation.
Tips for Personalizing Your Eid Gift Basket
Personalization is key when crafting DIY Eid gift baskets, as it allows you to create a truly unique and meaningful gift that resonates with the recipient. Here are some tips for adding a personal touch to your gift baskets:
Adding Custom-Made Items: Incorporate handmade or customized items that reflect the recipient's interests or hobbies, such as personalized jewelry, monogrammed towels, or handcrafted artworks.
Incorporating Cultural Elements: Infuse your gift basket with elements of your cultural heritage, such as traditional handicrafts, festive decorations, or culinary delights that evoke fond memories of Eid celebrations past.
Budget-Friendly Options for DIY Eid Gift Baskets
Crafting a thoughtful and memorable Eid gift basket doesn't have to break the bank. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can create beautiful gift baskets on a budget. Here are some budget-friendly ideas to consider:
Utilizing Recyclable Materials: Instead of purchasing expensive baskets or containers, repurpose items you already have at home, such as mason jars, wicker baskets, or decorative boxes.
DIY Gift Ideas: Get creative with DIY gifts that are both meaningful and budget-friendly, such as homemade cookies, infused oils, or handcrafted candles. Not only are these gifts cost-effective, but they also add a personal touch to your basket.
Presentation and Packaging of Your Eid Gift Basket
The presentation of your Eid gift basket is just as important as its contents, as it sets the tone for the recipient's experience. Pay attention to the details when packaging your basket, focusing on aesthetics and visual appeal.
Choosing the Right Container: Select a container that complements the theme and style of your gift basket, whether it's a rustic wooden crate, an elegant wicker hamper, or a decorative gift box adorned with ribbons and bows.
Wrapping Techniques and Embellishments: Use creative wrapping techniques to enhance the presentation of your basket, such as cellophane wrap, tissue paper, or fabric bows. Add embellishments like ribbon, twine, or dried flowers for a finishing touch that adds charm and elegance.
Meaningful Gestures with DIY Eid Gift Baskets
Beyond the material value of the gifts themselves, DIY Eid gift baskets are a heartfelt expression of love, thoughtfulness, and generosity. By investing time and effort into creating personalized gifts for your loved ones, you not only demonstrate your appreciation for them but also strengthen your bonds and create lasting memories.
Sharing DIY Eid Gift Basket Ideas with Friends and Family
Spread the joy of gift-giving by sharing your DIY Eid gift basket ideas with friends and family. Host a DIY gift basket-making party where guests can come together to create personalized gifts for each other, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community spirit.
Encourage others to embrace the spirit of giving by sharing your creative ideas and tips for crafting thoughtful and meaningful Eid gift baskets. Whether it's through social media, blog posts, or word of mouth, inspire others to celebrate the joy of Eid by spreading love and kindness through personalized gifts.
Eid Gift Basket Etiquette
While the act of giving is a cherished tradition during Eid, it's essential to observe proper gifting etiquette to ensure that your gesture is well-received and appreciated. Here are some dos and don'ts to keep in mind when presenting DIY Eid gift baskets:
Dos: Personalize your gift basket based on the recipient's preferences and interests. Include a heartfelt message or card expressing your warm wishes and blessings. Present your gift with humility and sincerity, focusing on the sentiment behind the gesture rather than the monetary value of the gifts.
Don'ts: Avoid giving gifts that may be culturally insensitive or inappropriate. Refrain from overspending or going beyond your means to impress the recipient. Respect the recipient's privacy and preferences regarding gift-giving traditions and customs.
The Joy of Giving and Receiving DIY Eid Gift Baskets
As the saying goes, "It's the thought that counts," and nowhere is this sentiment more evident than during Eid celebrations. The joy of giving and receiving DIY Eid gift baskets lies not in the material value of the gifts themselves but in the love, thoughtfulness, and effort that goes into creating them.
By embracing the tradition of gift-giving and exchanging heartfelt tokens of appreciation, we strengthen our bonds with loved ones and foster a sense of unity and belonging within our communities. Whether you're on the giving or receiving end of a DIY Eid gift basket, cherish the moments of joy, gratitude, and connection that it brings.
DIY Eid Gift Basket Ideas for Different Age Groups
Eid celebrations are inclusive of people of all ages, from young children to elderly relatives. When crafting DIY Eid gift baskets, consider the age and interests of the recipients to ensure that your gifts are well-suited to their preferences.
Kids' Gift Baskets: Fill children's gift baskets with toys, games, and sweets that cater to their age and interests. Include fun activities such as coloring books, puzzles, or craft kits to entertain them during Eid celebrations.
Adult-Themed Baskets: For adults, consider gift baskets filled with gourmet treats, fine wines, or self-care products for a relaxing and indulgent Eid experience. Tailor the contents of the basket to reflect the recipient's tastes and preferences, whether they're a foodie, a wine connoisseur, or a wellness enthusiast.
Incorporating Technology into DIY Eid Gift Baskets
In today's digital age, technology plays an integral role in our daily lives, even during festive occasions like Eid. Consider incorporating technology into your DIY Eid gift baskets to add a modern and innovative twist to traditional gift-giving.
Digital Gift Cards: Instead of traditional gift cards, opt for digital gift cards that can be instantly delivered via email or messaging apps. Choose retailers or online platforms that offer a wide selection of products and services to cater to the recipient's preferences.
Personalized Playlists: Create personalized playlists or music compilations that reflect the recipient's musical tastes and preferences. Include a mix of Eid-themed songs, traditional melodies, and favorite tracks to set the mood for festive celebrations.
Digital Photo Albums: Compile a digital photo album or slideshow featuring cherished memories and moments shared with the recipient. Include photos from past Eid celebrations, family gatherings, or special occasions to evoke nostalgia and create a sense of connection and camaraderie.
Conclusion
Crafting DIY Eid gift baskets is a heartfelt and meaningful way to celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr. By personalizing your gifts and tailoring them to the preferences and interests of your loved ones, you not only express your love and appreciation but also create lasting memories and strengthen your bonds with family and friends.
As you embark on your gift-giving journey, remember that it's the thought and effort behind the gesture that truly matters. Whether you're crafting elaborate gourmet baskets or simple handmade gifts, let your creativity and sincerity shine through, and spread love and joy to all those around you.

Ted Lasso fic recs
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
Wings Wouldn't Help You Down by ViolentlyRed - Rated G
He thought the most awkward thing he'd have to endure was a rigid Roy Kent embrace in the Man City locker room months ago. He was wrong. And he’s getting better at admitting when he’s wrong, so. Turning up on Coach's doorstep at two thirty in the morning was infinitely, infinitely more awkward. Or, Jamie's hurt and not about to say much about it, and Ted's a good coach.
Reset With the Sunset by fandomfrolics - Rated G
Sam tries to figure out how to navigate his first Ramadan in the English Premier League. Set in S1.
Mull River Shuffle by bibliothekara - Rated G
Ted falls in the Thames; Beard, Rebecca, and Sam to the rescue.
The First Rule of Fight Club is No Fight Club by Lolapola - Rated T
A few days after relegation, an angry investor pays a visit to the Richmond AFC locker room, and he has his sights set on Ted Lasso. Fortunately, Roy Kent has been well and truly won over by now, and - yeah. He's not about to stand for this.
Diary by TwoAces - Rated G
It’s not a diary, really. At least, not in the traditional sense. It’s supposed to be an appointment book—a gift from Keeley, so she’s not having to text him reminders all the time. He’s promised to use it, and is surprised that it’s actually mad convenient to help remember events, so he starts using it for other things, too.
that mask will never look the same by tensecond_memory - Rated T
“Right. Okay. Is that… it?” “No, actually,” she says after a beat in which she fights back another wave of that mysterious Guilty Face, “there’s one more discussion on the agenda courtesy of one Coach Ted Lasso,” her voice is quieter now, and suddenly something shifts in the air and it feels like she’s the one who’s turned back into a scolded child. Jamie stares at her. “There are some… specifics regarding the… premature termination of your loan last season that Ted, rightfully, believes you deserve to be informed of, now that we’re all more aware of how the decision impacted your well-being,” OR Jamie isn't the only one who owes some apologies.
Little Kitmen Have Big Ears by andrealyn - Rated T
Most people don't really notice when Will's in the room, which leads to him hearing some very unique conversations. Every now and again, though, he's seen and it makes all the difference.
we're not in kansas anymore (we're now in missouri) by ceterum - Rated G
Shortly after the devastating loss on final matchday, the West London’s Finest are back in action. After a compilation of their… innovative plays goes viral, they are invited to play a friendly against Ted Lasso’s home state’s MLS club. AFC Richmond’s pre-season one(-and-a-half)-stop American tour, as observed by Trent Crimm, The Independent.
Adding Steel To The Team by BrittaTheBest - Rated T
“I feel… really weird, Roy.” “Yeah, I’m not surprised. Listen, I think you should lie down, yeah?” - Quick little fic. Ted is stabbed outside Richmond the night before a match. Mostly Roy-centric, but also feat. the rest of the club
Journalism Continues To Be The Villain That Moves The Plot Forward For This Show by MagpieWords - Rated T
When the press finds out Ted uses an unknown intramuscular substance, speculation runs wild while our favorite coach avoids dealing with his feelings. alternate titles lovingly include : "lost in the sauce" and "a saucy misunderstanding"
The Official AFC Richmond TikTok by mariip - Rated T
Keeley isn't there to manage their socials anymore, so when Jamie and Sam ask to make a TikTok for the club, everyone decides it will be a good idea. (Or, completely self-indulgent AFC Richmond silliness)
Make them Gold by mariip - Rated T
Roy realizes he has no idea when Jamie's birthday is, and when he realizes it's only a week away, the only solution is obviously cake in the dressing room after training. Or, the himbos manage to pull off a surprise party.
every boy wants to be like his father by themightyduck - Rated G
"It turned out all right in the end, though," Jamie says quietly, ears burning red. "Oh yeah?" Ted asks. "How's that?" Jamie gestures at the pizza and the beer and the TV. "Watching a game with me old man, ain't I?"
did i really say that? by believeinbelieve - Rated G
For the first time in history - AFC Richmond have won the premier league trophy. It was a tie game until Colin scored a historic goal in injury time. Everything was going perfect for him — until the press conference. The game went to his head and next thing he knew everyone was telling him about how brave and inspiring he was — but he had no clue why. or ~~~ Colin accidentally comes out after a major victory.
stand a little stronger as I walk a little taller all the time by inlovewithnight - Not Rated
Post season 2, Jamie does a PSA for the National Council on Domestic Violence. He does not expect anyone to notice this. He is not aware that he's surrounded by people who notice everything.
The Art of Seduction by jumpfall - Rated G
"Is Coach cheating on us with another football team?" Sam asks. "Worse," Roy says. "An American football team."

Can anyone explain the whole “Christmas is actually a pagan holiday/capitalism idea!”
Yeah Christians adapted a lot of pagan festivals or merge them with their beliefs similar to how Day of the Dead as we know it came to be. Wait that more complicated.
I mean are you guys going to attack Jewish people over Hanukkah? Actually I heard that was originally a minor holiday that later became bigger because it tend to start near Christmas.
What this idea that all pagan culture was wipeout by Christianity? I mean it not rocket science on who the other big influence of Santa Claus beyond Saint Nick. Especially if Santa winks.
I started rambling, going to add a super short TL:DR; at the end.
Hanukkah is actually older, pre-dates Jesus Jews kicked the Greeks out in the Maccabean revolt, 2nd century BC.
Few hundred years later they tried it again with Rome, didn't go as well.
Tumblr media
This is part of the "Arch of Titus" celebrating his sack of Jerusalem and looting then destroying the Temple, you'll notice the menorah. There's some people that look at this in the same way people looked at statues of confederate generals.
Not sure about it being a minor holiday but it could be, just like the calendar of saints if you're Catholic and looking for a reason to have a party you can pretty much toss a dart at a calendar and land on a Jewish holiday without much trouble.
Easter is one we as Christians kind of share, obviously Pesach/Passover lines up with it because it's not like we don't know the dates there.
The Christmas thing is people seem to want to associate it with "pagan" stuff to deligitimize Christianity or something, love to see them to that with Ramadan or Dwali, Dwali being a Hindu festival of lights, different theme than Hanukkah though.
But ya, there may be bits and pieces of local folklore that make it into the regional celebrations, but there's no pagan root to Christmas at all.
Tumblr media
Places have their different things like Krampus or Black Pete (soot from a chimney) and what not.
The capitalism thing is more recent, but the giving of gifts started with the wise men so not really pagan there either.
Though they were likely soothsayers/magicians ect themselves, still sets the example we've been following. Gifts aren't always as useful as those were but still nothing wrong with new socks. ___________
TL:DR; it's not pagan, no Christian holidays are taken from pagan holidays that I can think of, certain regional folklore has stayed alive in the celebrations but those are.......regional so things like a flaming goat made of straw aren't needed for Christmas.
Incredible how much global crossover there is on various holy days, might be something with that whole lunar calendar that everyone all over the globe managed to figure out at some point. ________
Your harvest festival is around the same time as ours, wonder who copied whom?
Nobody it's when the corn was ready for us and the wheat for you, it's not that deep.

Are any of your OCs doing anything to celebrate Ramadan?
Set and Zaima are!
before Ramadan starts, Zaima will go with her whole family to get new clothes and gifts for her younger siblings, it's one of her favorite parts she could spend all day dressing up her baby sister and figuring out how to wear the latest trends in a modest way
during Ramadan, Zaima likes to get up before the rest of her family with her older brother and prepare suhoor while their mom takes care of their youngest sister (she's 1 so she still takes a lot of care in the mornings) and their dad gets their younger brother ready for school (he's 5 so if his dad isn't there with him the whole time he will not get ready at all lol) Zaima usually pairs bhatoora with avocado, pomegranate, and feta while her brother fries eggs with spinach and serves up lassi and the food for the younger ones, they'll also make up a lunch box for their brother since he's not old enough to fast
Set prepares for Ramadan by listening to Quran podcasts and reaching out to his family to wish them a blessed month (and hope that they finally acknowledge his gender - maybe one day, right?) he also buys his weight in dates and prepares a bunch of protein-packed breakfasts he can just pull out of his fridge for the first week so he can put off waking up til the last possible minute
during Ramadan his favorite thing to do is volunteer at the local children's hospital, helping kids losing their vision for whatever reason feel more comfortable with the idea and see a well-adjusted adult who went through the same sort of struggle who can also do fun things like skateboard

Religion in Islamic Architecture
Even though there are some parts of Islamic architecture that to modern knowledge lack symbolic religious significance, there are, nevertheless, connections to religion. Islam, which believes that everything and anything created by God is under his order and should not be idolised, does not sensationalise living things, in contract to Christianity.
The monotheistic religion of Islam has its own tenets and traditions, such as charity, fasting during Ramadan, and if possible, a pilgrimage to Mecca - even though it shares the prophetic history of Judaism and Christianity. Although it can he challenging to define Islamic art, it is understood that not all Islamic art is religious and that not all artists who produce said art must be Muslims (Artsy Net., 2023).
With regards to architecture, as mentioned, there can often be no symbolic links to religion, and the connections that are made, are often portrayed through the use of calligraphy, colour and geometry - the hallmark characteristics of Islamic architecture.
This specific blog post will explore the architecture of some of the most outstanding examples of religious institutions within Islamic style architecture - beginning with The Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
Sultanahmet Mosque (The Blue Mosque)
Tumblr media
The Blue Mosque, Istanbul, 1723.
The Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) more commonly known as The Blue Mosque was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I by architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Agha - the detailed workbook of the construction of this mosque consists of eight volumes and still lies in the Topkapi Palace library. The recognised name of 'The Blue Mosque' being attached to the building is due to the hand-painted blue tiles that adorn the interior walls, alongside the blue cast that envelopes the mosque of a night time as a result of lights framing the mosque's five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes.
The Blue Mosque features two main sections: a large unified prayer hall crowned by the main dome and an equally spacious courtyard (Smart History., 2023). As mentioned, the Mosque has six minarets (the only other mosque in the world with this many minarets was the Haram Mosque of Mecca - this led to the religious leaders of the time to become outraged and send out the Sultan's architect to Mecca to build a seventh minaret so that the holiest of mosques could retain 'superior status') and eight secondary domes, and its design was a culmination of two centuries of Ottoman Mosque design, with an incorporation of Byzantine elements of the neighbouring architectural masterpiece Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. Sedefkâr Mehmed Agha, the architect, synthesised the ideas of his master Sinan, aiming for overwhelming size, majesty and splendour (Architectuul., 2023).
Tall wooden gates envelop the courtyard of the mosque, and the mosque itself is revealed behind the gates presenting spectacular dove-grey domes, marble walls and gold-tipped minarets. Tourists are recommended to use the south door of the Mosque as to allow worshippers to enter through the main door only, and allows for the prayer sections of the Mosque to retain its sacred air.
Upon entrance of the mosque, there is an introduction to the more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles in traditional Ottoman patterns adorn the walls and ceilings. Lilies, carnations and tulips are depicted throughout. The Blue Mosque's interior domes are tiled intricately, painted and decorated with verses from the Quran and the sayings of prophet Muhammed (The Travel Bunny., 2021). Many of them written by Seyyid Karim Gubari, a 17th century Ottoman artist celebrated as one of the most accomplished calligraphers of his time.

The upper levels of the building have more than 200 stained glassed windows - the coloured glass for the windows were a gift from the Signoria of Venice to the Sultan - with beautiful designs allowing natural light to ascend the interior, as of modern day there are chandeliers to aid the lighting in the building. On the chandeliers, ostrich eggs are found that were meant to avoid cobwebs inside the mosque by repelling spiders.
The floors wear carpets that are regularly replaced by donations due to them getting worn out because of the number of visitors that walk upon it.
According to architectuul.com, the most important element of the interior of the mosque is the mihrab, which is finely carved and sculptured marble, with a stalactite niche and a double inscriptive panel above it. Surrounded by many windows - the adjacent walls are sheathed in ceramic tiles.

Architecturally, the best way to enter The Blue Mosque is to approach it from the hippodrome (west side of the mosque) - non-muslim tourists are encouraged to visit the mosque, however, they are not allowed in during prayer time, which is of course five times a day - the mosque closes for 90 minuted each time. Shoes have to be removed from your person, and it is vital that you are dressed appropriately, women should wear a head covering - but they are freely available upon entrance of the establishment. For everyone, legs and shoulders should be covered.
It is absolutely required that tourists do not use flash photography and remain quiet always - this is not just an architectural masterpiece, but a place of worship, and that should be respected always.
Selimiye Mosque
The second religious institution to be analysed on Building Islam is another Turkish mosque called Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, and started construction in 1568 with its completion in 1574 by architect Mimar Sinan - a famous architect of the time who will be explored in the upcoming blog post.
The Selimiye Mosque was built at the peak of the Ottoman military and cultural power, Sultan Selim II - the son and successor of Suleiman the Magnificent, chose Edirne instead of Istanbul as the location to build his own sultan mosque. It is debated amongst historians as to why this location was chosen with some speculating Selim II had a passion for the city as he serves as governer between 1548 and 1550, and others speculating it is because Selim II had not commanded a victorious military campaign which Islamic scholars believe to have been a requirement for building a sultanic mosque in Istanbul. The construction of this mosque was funded by the help of the sultan's share of the spoils from the successful conquest of Cyprus, Selim II died in December 1574 meaning he never saw the mosque fully completed (UNESCO., 2023).
The Selimiye Mosque is considered to be the masterpiece of architect Sinan's entire career, and is thought to be one of the most important buildings in the history of the world - architecturally and monumentality. The mosque, together with the two madrasas on its southeast and southwest is located within a courtyard. A row of shops and recitation school (darülkurra) to the west of the courtyard were added to the complex by architect Davud Aga in the reign of the Sultan Murad III (1574-95).
The mosque has a rectangular, borderline square, prayer hall and on the north side, a courtyard with porticoes. There are three entrances to the courtyard, north, east and west. In the centre of the courtyard is a 12-sided fountain. Each corner of the prayer hall features a 71m high minaret each with a balcony. The mentioned balconies are accessed by three separate corners on the northeast and northwest corners (Discover Islamic Art., 2023). The approach to the north façade of the mosque is dramatic with aligned gates of the outer precinct wall and forecourt focus the eye upwards towards the intricately designed dome.
Tumblr media
The dome rests on eight muqarnas-corbelled squinches that are in turn supported by eight large piers.
Tumblr media
Muqarnas are faceted decorative forms used in Islamic architecture to bridge a point of transition - in relation to the Selimiye Mosque, the broad base of the dome above and the slender piers below (Khan Academy., 2023). A complex system of exterior buttresses support the east and west piers and do most of the handling for the weight of the dome. The buttresses are purposely hidden amongst the exterior porticos and galleries. The interior allows for galleries to fill the spaces in between the walls and the piers. The Qibla wall (the wall facing Mecca) projects outwards to emphasise the vast interior space. Another unusual thing that was decided upon through construction by architect Sinan, was the placement of the muezzins platform - under the centre of the dome. From the platform, the muezzins who lead prayer chant to congregation, and art historians have compared its positioning within the mosque to that of a church altar - a raised stand for biblical readings - supporting the fact that Sinan was interested in surpassing Christian architecture. The platform also creates a vertical alignment of square, octagon and circle, using geometry to refer to earthly and heavenly spaces.
Through the centuries since the construction of the Selimiye Mosque, the interior had changed as it has been repainted and then extensively restored in the 20th century. The polychrome Iznik tiles remain largely untouched since the 16th century, but in the 19th century Sultan Abdülmecid I had most of the painted decoration including arabesque motifs, plant of flower motifs, and calligraphic inscriptions added for his ordered restoration.
The sultan's private balcony for prayers, is set to the eastern corner of the mosque in an elevated position and is intricately decorated with Iznik tiles also.

The Selimiye Mosque was not only an architectural masterpiece in relation to Mimar Sinan's incredible career but in regards to the influence it had on later mosque constructions. The form of Laleli Mosque in Istanbul built in the 18th century is based on the Selimiye Mosque, as well as the modern Sabancı Merkez Camii in Adana (1988). Despite being 80% the size of the Selimiye Mosque, the Nizamiye Mosque in South Africa is modelled on it and remains the largest in the Southern hemisphere.

Having now discussed two architectural pieces of religious institutions in the Islamic architectural style, the following blog post will focus on the work of three of the most celebrated Islamic architects and their works containing Mosques.
The production of this blog took much longer than anticipated but to finalise this post, I will share that in the next couple of posts I will be incorporating images of my own families homes and local mosques in Pakistan - the incorporation of my personal family and life has come about thanks to a group of fellow students named The Blog Club that help me with deciding what to talk about next! And hopefully create an informal, comfortable space for everyone to discuss their thoughts and opinions!
P.S. The Blue Mosque and The Selimiye Mosque are some of my favourite examples of Islamic architecture!
