Genuinely curious, because you seem to hate the Ram Mandir... or how you think one party/ruling government is using it for political gain/votes or how it's wasting money etc.
What do you have to say about the Waqf board act? Or the infamous Shah Bano case and the way the Rajiv Gandhi government went against the decision of the Supreme Court to favour Muslim patriarchy. Or the fact that the Congress government banned books like the Satanic Verses to please a certain community. Is this not politics of appeasement?
You say that the ruling party is playing politics over religion, but hasn't every party done it? It's not like BJP was even hiding it, they've been campaigning for the Ram Mandir rebuilding for decades. It doesn't make it automatically a bad move.
Besides, Ram Mandir is built through devotee donations, so why so much vitriol against it? If Hindus are giving money to construct a temple, it's solely their own decision. I genuinely don't understand why there's so much hatred for it. If a community is reclaiming their holy land, which had been forcibly ruined and rebuilt into another type of building, it's not a bad thing. Plus, a big chunk of land was given to the Sunny Waqf board to build a beautiful mosque in Ayodhya itself, which has begun construction this year (iirc). Both communities will have their interests restored.
Why can't we move on and celebrate the Ram Mandir rebuilding and inauguration? Is decolonization and reclaiming of a place of cultural significance not important?
(I know that some people are being too aggressive about it, but the majority isn't. They're simply celebrating and praying. And some of them actually got attacked for it.)
Okay. Since you're genuinely curious, I'll answer this.
"Why am I criticising the current ruling party for playing politics of appeasement and not any of the other parties?" I'm criticizing them BECAUSE they're the ruling party. They have been in power for close to 10 years now. That's more than 1/3rd of my whole life. This is a hilarious question because I would've been criticizing the same action if it would've been taken by any other political party. I don't have a problem with the party, I have a problem with what they're doing. All citizens are SUPPOSED to do this, my friend. Criticizing your government on what they're doing wrong is a fundamental part of a democracy.
"Politics of appeasement." I hope you understand the difference between appeasement and religious nationalism. The ruling party isn't appeasing anyone. Their acts are guided by their political ideology of Hindutva. I fundamentally disagree with their ideology. I do not agree with them when they say being Hindu is integral to being an Indian. I do not believe in maintaining a Hindu hegemony in India. I simply refuse to accept an ideology that was LITERALLY INSPIRED BY FASCISM AND THE IDEAS OF RACIAL SUPERIORITY.
"What do you have to say about so-and-so?" You know, I would've criticised things I believe are harming our country and power when the governments you speak of were in power. Unfortunately, in certain cases I was not alive then to criticize them and in a few cases, I was a child and I did not know how to form complex sentences. I do not believe in essentialism, you understand? I do not believe that any religion or political party is essentially good or bad. I believe in judging them for what they do.
"They've been campaigning for the Ram Mandir for decades. It doesn't make it automatically a bad move." It's imperative for you to understand this, it is politically a good move and in all other ways a HORRIBLE move. They get the support of all the Hindus who make up the majority of the population? Decent political move. Who could begrudge them for using DIVIDE AND CONQUER as a strategy? But in doing so, what kind of monster have they created? Have they created a billion people who think religious-nationalism is an okay direction for the country's future? Is that a good move, I ask you.
"Ram mandir is built through devotee donations so it's okay." That's close to ₹1,800 crores. (Estimated amount because of course, there's no transparency in the donation system so that we know who donated what amount.) Do you seriously believe all that money came out of the pockets of average working class Indians? Or did the ultra wealthy businessmen fund this religious project and get massive tax breaks in the process? But yes, I'm sure there's no fuckery going on with the money because it's out of DEVOTION. That makes it okay, I guess.
Now we come to the part that is the worst part of this anon message, according to me.
"Reclamation and decolonization." You use these words so lightly and I find that offensive. These words are HIGHLY tied to power structures. Who has the power right now? Is it the mythic evil Islamic conquerors of 400 years ago? Or is it a political party that believes in hindu nationalism and is funded by the ultra wealthy billionaires because said party helps them get even richer? Who is reclaiming what here? I want you to ask yourself this. Can a powerful majority claim reclamation when they tear down a building to build another building there?
"They tore down the temple and built a mosque there" And now you've torn down the mosque and built a temple there. Congratulations, you've won the game. Where do we go from here? Will everyone be happy now? Has peace been restored? A great evil destroyed? What story are we telling ourselves here? Will the religious fanaticism go away now? Will the hatred that has been cultivated in the hearts of Hindus against Muslims be sated? Or will it find more avenues to spread itself?
Decolonizing the mind, right? I wonder why we're only focused on decolonizing against the islamic past and not anything else. But it's okay that India is currently colonising Kashmir. We don't believe in decolonisation when it comes to Kashmir. We don't believe in decolonizing from the system of capitalism that is choking the lives out of us. HELL, WE DON'T EVEN BELIEVE IN RECLAMATION SEEING HOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GIVING THE BARE MINIMUM RESERVATION TO CERTAIN COMMUNITIES AS A REPARATION FOR THE HARM THEY'VE HISTORICALLY AND CURRENTLY SUFFERED AND ARE STILL SUFFERING.
I don't want people to talk to me about reclamation, reparation and decolonisation before they accept their own hypocrisy.
Anon, you say have so much vitriol and hate towards a mandir. I should let people celebrate. Did I stop you personally from celebrating? Did I beat up somebody for trying to shove their religious agenda on me? All I did was talk about how sad I am that this is what we've decided to do with our country's resources. Why is one voice of dissent such a big deal to you? Do you want me to shut up and fall in line? Will that be acceptable?

Freeing Palestine is India's fight
I've seen lots of posts about how Western countries and their populations should be concerned for stopping the genocide in Palestine but Indians are involved in this as well.
India has a HUGE Islamophobia problem, from the day India became what it is, this country exists the way it does through conflict regarding religious majorities and it is a problem we must acknowledge.
Collective punishment has often been carried out indiscriminately against Muslims in India- Muslim people's houses in Madhya Pradesh have been demolished without warning. This has also happened in Uttar Pradesh and in 2023, Haryana(300 businesses and homes). These were all normal innocent civilians who had proper legal paperwork showing their purchase and ownership of their home and land, but the police did not care. In many of these instances the police stood by and were involved in demolition and all of these were under BJP-majority and ruled areas. The recent Ram Mandir was built on the demolished land of Babri Masjid(it was built in the 14th century before India as it was even a THING, its destruction & demolition on the claim that it was Ram's birth place is unfair). Hate crimes against Muslims run amok and there are multiple cases of violence against Muslims in India.
PM Modi of the BJP party has been consistent in maintaining positive relations with Benjamin Netanyahu and the occupying force of Israel. A majority of the military equipment for India comes from Israel, and India has constantly been neutral in UN council meetings when decisions regarding Israel are brought up. A spyware called Pegasus, developed by the occupying force of Israel was used to surveil politicians, journalists, activists etc severely breaching right to privacy and threatening freedom of speech.
Worse; India has been using the Israeli strategy of colonizing Palestine with Kashmir. Jammu & Kashmir is a union territory which basically means they are allowed to function independently on most fronts but India has been seeking to integrate J&K into itself and has been extremely hostile to its Muslim citizens and are currently intensifying their occupation efforts. There have been consistent internet and communication blackouts since 2018 and it is STILL ongoing.
India invited Israeli officials to Kashmir to open 'Centers of Excellence' which are supposedly for agricultural innovation but everyone in J&K are concerned and see it as India taking an opportunity to intensify its occupation with Israeli help.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, several Kashmiris told Middle East Eye the Israeli agriculture hubs would deepen India's occupation in the region and accelerate its settler-colonial project. "Earlier, we would draw the parallels between Kashmir and Palestine or India's intimate alliance with Israel. But now they are bringing Israel to the Valley in the form of these institutions - which will be "agro-oriented" in name - but we all know that Israel will physically help India in Kashmir to turn it into a proper Palestine," a Kashmiri academic based in Istanbul told Middle East Eye.
In 2016 Coalition of Civil Society said there are more than 8000 'disappearances' of people in J&K. There are mass graves with over 2000 bodies being found with these unlawful activities being attributed to the Indian Security Forces. That's just scratching the surface of decades of violence and human rights violations enacted by India.
BJP is not shy about its ties to the RSS and promotes Hindutva(I've seen people citing the literal meaning of the word as evidence that it is harmless but the word is a label given to an embraced by extreme right-wing groups who are open about their Islamaphobia. Meaning of the word becomes pointless when actions speak otherwise).
India is an occupying force on J&K, it's suppressing Muslims, demonizing them and further marginalizing them in the name of 'Hinduism'. It buys from Israel and endorses them. As Indians, it is key that we do whatever we can to stop the genocide because we are unwittingly being used to fuel this and are being radicalized to hate on our neighbors, the people we share our land and history with.
Even outside of the ways in which the current government is shamelessly supporting Israel, India's history is rife with colonization. The British had occupied us, forced us into fighting each other, into prioritizing meaningless differences to suppress each other. We were once starved by occupying forces, violated, killed. Our land is also covered in blood shed by colonization.
What are we doing if we don't speak up? If we don't stop this? Do not follow the propaganda conflating extreme right-wing ideologies with the identity of being Indian. Don't buy into the idea that India is "for Hindus", we are so ridiculously diverse, there are 100s of languages and religions in this country.
Free Jammu & Kashmir, free Palestine, stop Islamophobia.

i can tell you how the babri masjid was replaced by a ram mandir so quickly; the verdict was only five years ago, but i remember, during one of my classes at university, a professor, who was teaching us about the demolition, told us about his then recent visit to the site.
he said, that just by the ruins of the masjid, stood a partially constructed temple that had been under way for many years prior to his visit (remember, hindu organisations had been collecting monetary donations and bricks for decades running up to the demolition) and that the ram mandir authorities were already waiting for a decision in their favour to transfer the mandir to the site. that, and the horrendous labour conditions that construction workers live through in india.

i have said it irl and I'll say it here; the construction of the ram mandir was thier duty. ppl voted for bjp to get it built. once it was done, ppl had nothing else to look forward to in their manifesto, and no other developments were made in up, so ppl didn't vote for them again. compare it to working a 9-5. if you complete a difficult task, you're gonna get praise, maybe your name will be in for a promotion, but if you keep being consistent with your work, ppl will applaud you. If you just do the difficult task and nothing else, ppl will praise you, but you won't get a promotion
the ram mandir argument doesn't make much sense anyway. for one, ram mandir is in ayodhya but ayodhya itself is not a lok sabha constituency. the constituency is faizabad which is much bigger than ayodhya and have multiple other cities too. by all accounts, while work has been done to "better" ayodhya (which itself is debatable), the other cities have been ignored with no development for the past decade. so, the "hindus betrayed bjp" and "hindus betrayed hinduism and ram" argument would make a little bit more sense during the up elections when ayodhya is its own assembly constituency. and even then, it would be very weak cause who the fuck are you to decide how people follow their own religion? why do you think you know better than the people living there? you see the temple as the restoration of your faith, but the people who live there have lost their homes and their livelihoods so that the temple can be constructed. i highly doubt they love the temple or see it as god's kingdom when it came with that steep a price. also, in the words of certain people, the temple is about faith and religion. so why should people make a political decision based on its construction? religion and politics shouldn't go hand in hand. although most right wing people often forget this simple fact.

“Ram Mandir Ayodhya”
Tumblr media
Let's talk about the beauty of India – “Ram Mandir Ayodhya”.
The story of Ram Mandir dates back to ancient times when Ayodhya was the capital of the mighty kingdom of Kosala. The revered epic, Ramayana, chronicles Rama's life, his exile, and the triumph of good over evil in the form of the demon king Ravana. Ram Mandir - the living testament to the confluence of history, devotion, and the collective heartbeat of a nation. This sacred sanctuary, arising from the dust of centuries, is not just a place of worship but a symphony of stories etched into the very soul of India. The journey towards the construction of this magnificent temple is woven into the very fabric of India's rich cultural tapestry, blending history, religion, and the collective consciousness of millions.

The narrative of the Ram Janmabhoomi also carries the weight of centuries of struggle and disputes. The Babri Masjid, built in the 16th century, stood on the same site, leading to a complex and emotionally charged legal and social battle. Decades of legal wrangling reached a pivotal moment in 2019 when the Supreme Court rendered a verdict in favor of constructing the Ram Mandir, a decision that recognized the sentiments of millions and sought to heal historical wounds.
"Sculpting Divinity: Exploring the Architectural Marvels and Spiritual Essence of the Ram Mandir"

Do you think that despite everything and despite the nature of Sanatanis as a majority being starkly different from any other majority in the world, we still have any priveleges as a majority? Of course we've already established that being a majority doesn't necessarily mean we cannot be oppressed but do you think we still exercise some degree of privelege that minorities don't? I'm looking for as many viewpoints as I can and you're the only hindutva blog I know.
Hmm, If I’m being honest the only “majority privilege” I can think of is of Sanatan being seen as an inseparable part of our culture in the media.
If you see India being portrayed in other countries, you have a highte chance of seeing a Sanatani person or an idol or a temple in the background than you have of seeing mosques or churches. But I guess the fact that this is the birthplace of one of the largest religions of one and virtually the only country with a sizeable population of us (Nepal, Bali, Mauritius, Fiji and Trinidad aren’t as known still sadly) , so I think half of the times it can be them showing Indians when they have to portray Hindus rather than them showing Hindus when they have to show Indians, though it is certainly the latter at just as many times.
Other than that, being a majority in democracy certainly pays. We have voted in a government we found benificial to ourselves, goes on to iterate that we hold a massive amount of power united. 80% is big afterall. This might sound problematic and it is pretty fucked up aswell, but Godhra and Delhi riots are a negative outcome of “hindus” deciding to unite for the wrong thing, even if for a reactionary reason. The Hindus all over the country uniting against them for righteousness such as in Bilkis Bano case, is a positive example of same. The dominance of Sanatani sentiment in states like Maharashtra,UP and Gujrat is also a result of us unitedly taking action to propagate the Hindu side.
Having 4/5th of power helps outside the political sphere aswell. The Ram Mandir Movement, Temple restoration movements and massive success of Kashmir Files has to show for that.
But our power as a majority is pretty harmless mostly because we don’t bear any ill will, and like you said it does not stop us from being oppressed because we rarely tend to take any fragmented attack on us seriously. So while yes, there are majority perks, it certainly is not half as decisive as media tries to portray it. This is for 2 reasons:
We aren’t inherently malicious. We have a live and let live philosophy which makes us totally harmless sans a few extreme right looney bin dropouts.
We tend to unite less. The examples I stated above are some of the few times we stand together and work as a majority. More often than not, like Bilkis or Kanhaiya case, we are all internally aware of right and wrong but lack the momentum to make things right or fight back against the injustice. And while 1 is totally great, 2 is something we need to change. We hold the power of majority and can get things done, but we waste it on things like a bikini colour and lose the heat instead of channeling it on right kind of stuff. I think people need to speak up more instead of all of us internally agreeing on what is wrong and what is right. so yeah, this is all I can think of, but I hope it helps. Thankyou!

Whispers(In the Shadow of the Mandir/Mandir ke saye main..)
In the heart of Ayodhya..under the open sky…
Where faith’s roots intertwined…with history’s sigh…
A spire rises…a testament bold..
In stones..a saga…centuries old..
In the shadow of the Mandir..there we stand…
A minority’s whisper …across the land…
Memories of Babri..like embers..still glow..
In the ashes of history..our silent stories flow…
The gavel fell..Justice’s hand did steer..
In corridors of power..the verdict was clear…Yet in our hearts..the questions remained..
In the script of the judgment..our hopes restrained…
Whispers of a scam..fourteen hundred crore..
Echo through the alleys..of the poor…
A temple for some..a symbol revered..
For others..a reminder of the dreams that disappeared…
Amidst December’s chill..whispers grew in might…
On a night of 22nd..under the cover of no light…
Idols appeared..as though by divine hand…
In the sacred space…where once others did stand…
A turn of events..altering the land’s heart…
Decades of discourse…from this moment start…
In the annals of Ayodhya..this night forever marked…
In the whispers of the shadows..its echoes sparked…
From the lanes of Ayodhya…to the halls of Delhi..
The story is told..the narrative set free..
But in the quiet corners..where minorities dwell…
There’s a different tale..a different spell..
In the shadow of the Mandir..under the crescent moon..
Our prayers ascend..a different tune…
For a land where every faith can find its place..
In the heart of India…a diverse embrace.
Let the temple rise..let the bells ring clear..
But let not it drown..the voices you need to hear…
In the story of a land..rich and diverse..
Every voice..every whisper..forms the universe…
So here we stand..in hope and in fear..
In the shadow of the Mandir..year after year..
Seeking a future where all can belong..
In the tapestry of India…diverse and strong…

My fam is from Goa, which led to the Portuguese reference. Colonization was enough to ensure a large conversion of the population. Same with Islamic colonization as well. The Hindu tax, the conversions, the killings under the chaotic mad rulers are all historical narratives.
The Hindus are the people who on the lands by the Sindhu river. Their gods were pagan. If you don't like the Hindu culture, that's your business. But Hindus have been here long before Islam and Christianity were even born historically. Mythologically, it's a free for all.
Ther Jews and the Palestinians have a right to exist just like any other religion. The extremists of course take advantage through intentional rhetoric, violence and of course, mainstream media broadcasting hate all day every day - whether it's the Hamas, the IDF, the Hindutva brigade, the ISI, the Islamic State - they do not represent a people or a culture. They do however represent a very narrow and sectarian view of the particular religious belief they claim to adhere to.
The Ram mandir was built on the mosque that was built on the temple that was razed and repurposed, which the high courts that examined the archeological evidence suggests. If there is a fallacy in that, there are ways to appeal the decision.
Speaking of the law, I would very much want the Government to be truly secular and treat all religions as equal - ban all of them for official business and enforce the uniform civil code which treats all people from all religions the same. That would help a lot and reduce if not outright make casteism punishable in official matters. For the general society to be casteless will require a more strenuous and long-term approach through socially active reform, better education and effective enforcement of the law in punishing those that break the law by proffering favors in official and business matters, based on caste.
If people want to worship, they should and if they don't, they shouldn't the Government should have no say or mandates in how who prays and when and where. The civil society either. However, religion can be private and a means for social bonding. When it becomes a cause for radical segregation, it needs to be banned from the public sphere altogether and reintroduced cautiously.
No government or judiciary or political party or national group or caste should be able to dictate policy on any beliefs - of any given religion.
Hinduism, IMO, is a nebulous and evolving religion that allows for individual beliefs to precede organized belief systems. And as long as the basic tenets of humanity - being kind, being moral, being equal are met - there should not be any need to interfere. The fascist state ideology and the Hindutva extremism is definitely not Hinduism.
I believe the tenets of the religion are tolerant, but the practices are barbaric because of the people who practice them not because of the underlying beliefs.
everyday i see clueless westerners (especially white people) reblog thinly veiled hindutva propaganda which they wouldn't know cause they know absolutely nothing about what goes on in india. so here are some signs that that the tumblr user you're interacting with is a hindu nationalist:
they either do not acknowledge casteism or claim that caste is a western construct. my personal favourite however is dismissing anyone bringing up caste discrimination by saying that the indian constitution outlaws untouchability. they may also bring up the fact that the prime minister belongs to an other backwards class (obc) so clearly india has moved on from caste and hindutva isn't only for the upper castes. they possess a shallow understanding of caste
harping on about "islamic colonisation" : no, the mughals did not colonise india. when you point this out, they will immediately assume that you think muslim invaders were innocent beings who did nothing wrong, which is very much not what anyone is claiming here
while we're on the topic of "islamic colonisation" they will also refer to the demolishing of muslim sites of heritage and worship and then building hindu temples over them as "decolonisation" (cough cough ram mandir) the hindu right also goes around pretending that they're indigenous to india. this is false
along a similar vein, they will dismiss islamaphobia by bringing up instances of hindu oppression in countries like pakistan and bangladesh. it is true that hindus are persecuted in these two countries, however they are used to fuel their oppression complex, that their upper caste hindu self is under attack in india of all places (think a white christian in the united states). you should be in solidarity with minorities everywhere. it is neither transactional or conditional (note: they will never bring up sri lanka. persecution of hindus exists only when the oppressors are muslim)
claiming that hindu nationalism and hindutva are not the same because hindutva means "hindu-ness". that is only the literal translation of the term. like it or not, they're the same thing
they support the indian military occupation of kashmir. they will call it an integral part of kashmir, one reason which will be "hinduism is indigenous to kashmir." they will also bring up the last maharaja of kashmir signing the instrument of accession as further proof, as if the consent of the people was taken
they're zionists. do i even need to explain this. hindutva is just zionism for hindus
they refer to buddhism and jainism (sikhism too sometimes) as branches of hinduism rather than separate, distinct religions
they condemn any resistance to the indian govt as a burden or terrorism) (like calling the farmers who are currently protesting a hindrance or terrorists. funny how sikhs are the same as hindus when they support hindu causes but terrorists when they resist oppression...)
they call you a pseudo liberal or a fake leftist. i'm telling you, they don't know jackshit. they can't even tell the difference between a liberal and a leftist and call US unread lmao. bonus points if they call you a liberandu or a sickularist 💀
please do your due diligence. read up on hindutva. hindu nationalists have already started making gains in the united states, thanks to rich upper caste nris . do not fall for propaganda

more tumblr comedy for you, look at tumblruser brownglitter 's latest post,,, im wheezing
arey yeh bhi mahagyani rhysaka ki hi follower hai. don't take her seriously. 😭 (but also it's so funny that during the pran pratishtha, the ram mandir was about religion and faith and not politics. but people should have made their political decisions and voted bjp cause of it anyway. like it doesn't make any sense.)

Once upon a time, in the sacred city of Ayodhya, there lived a dedicated and powerful monkey god named Hanuman. Known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama, Hanuman played a crucial role in the epic tale of Ramayana. Centuries later, when the idea of constructing a grand temple dedicated to Lord Rama emerged, Hanuman's divine presence became instrumental in the realization of this sacred endeavor.
The story begins with the decision to build the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama. The city echoed with the sounds of devotion and determination as people gathered to contribute to the construction. However, the task proved to be challenging, with various obstacles hindering the progress.
Amidst the struggles, the chief architect dreamt of a divine monkey god guiding him in the construction. Recognizing the significance of this dream, the people of Ayodhya sought the blessings of Hanuman to overcome the hurdles in building the Ram Mandir.
Hanuman, ever devoted to Lord Rama, manifested his divine presence at the construction site. His mighty form inspired the workers, and his unwavering dedication infused a newfound energy into the project. Hanuman, with his incredible strength, assisted in lifting massive stones and clearing obstacles from the construction site.
As the construction progressed, Hanuman's devotion to Lord Rama became the guiding force for the workers. His tales from the Ramayana, depicting valor, righteousness, and devotion, inspired a sense of purpose and dedication among all involved.
The tags associated with this story reflect its essence and themes. Hinduism and Ramayana highlight the religious and cultural context, while Hanuman and Ram Mandir emphasize the central characters and the sacred location. Devotion and Construction underscore the spiritual dedication and the physical efforts involved. Lastly, Divine Intervention speaks to the miraculous presence of Hanuman, shaping the destiny of the Ram Mandir.
In the end, with Hanuman's divine intervention and the collective dedication of the people, the Ram Mandir stood tall in Ayodhya, a testament to faith, devotion, and the enduring legacy of Lord Rama and his devoted monkey god, Hanuman.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled a long-standing dream on Monday by presiding over the opening of the Ram Mandir, a Hindu temple in Ayodhya. He described it as the 'beginning of a new era' during the temple's inaugural ceremony. The temple's construction marks a decisive break with secularism in India, as it was built on the site where a four-hundred-year-old mosque, Babri Masjid, once stood before being destroyed by a mob in 1992.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a paramilitary organization, were aligned with the mob that destroyed the mosque. Both the BJP and RSS envision India as a Hindu nation, despite its large Muslim population. In 2019, after a legal dispute, the Supreme Court of India allowed for the construction of the Hindu temple on the disputed site.
Modi's involvement in the temple goes back several decades when he was a young Hindu activist raising funds for its construction. Now, as the Prime Minister in his second consecutive term, the completion of the temple is likely to be a centerpiece of his future election campaigns.
In an interview with essayist and historian Mukul Kesavan, they discussed Modi's popularity, the violent history of the Ayodhya dispute, and what sets India apart from other countries experiencing right-wing political movements.
In 1925, the R.S.S. was founded as a nationalist organization with a Hindu majoritarianism focus. It aimed to create a unifying ideology for the diverse subcontinent of India. The R.S.S. felt alienated from the Congress Party and its anti-colonial nationalism. The Congress Party viewed India as a human jungle with diverse communities, while the R.S.S. and Hindu-majoritarian movements wanted a more homogenous nationalism. The Ram Mandir, a Hindu temple, played a significant role in the rise of the B.J.P. and the political mobilization of Indians. The R.S.S. has always had the ambition to reconstitute the Indian Republic and believes that the soul of India was suppressed between 1947 and 1950 when the constitution was written. The Ram-temple movement, which began in the 1980s, was led by organizations affiliated with the R.S.S. and the B.J.P. The movement argued for the right of Hindus to worship at the site believed to be the birthplace of Ram. The state often ignored provocations related to the temple, either considering them too sensitive or too troublesome to address.
In 1992, the demolition of the Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya shocked the country. The building was brought down by hand with crude tools, causing massive communal violence. The leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.) claimed they didn't want this criminal act to happen, but the shock it caused was intense. Decades later, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of building a temple on the site. This ruling, while acknowledging the mosque's destruction as a criminal act, ultimately gave the land to the Hindu party. It is seen as a capitulation to Prime Minister Modi and the Hindu nationalist movement.
