Happy Birthday Kenneth Campbell "Ken" Stott, born on October 19th 1954 in Edinburgh.
One of my favourite actors, as hard-drinking Detective hero of Ian Rankin's popular book he was Inspector John Rebus to me. Ken's Father was Scottish and a teacher, his mum a Sicilian, he went to the famous George Herriots school before going onto to Mountview Theatre School, where the distinguished actor Sir John Mills was president. Fellow Scot Douglas Henshall was also a student of the school. Before leaving Edinburgh Stott had been in a band called Keyhole some of the members of the group would later join the Bay City Rollers.
Ken went on to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company but the pay was poor and he subsidised his earnings by selling double glazing. His first TV role was in Secret Army for the BBC, parts in TV shows throughout his career have included, Taggart (of course) The Singing Detective, London's Burning, Your Cheatin' Heart and Silent Witness. He was insome good films too, The Debt Collector (with Billy Connolly) , Shallow Grave, (with Ewen MacGregor) and Plunkett & Macleane (with Robert Carlyle).
My favourite shows of Ken's have been the brilliant BBC Scotland series, Takin' Over the Asylum in which starred as Double Glazing salesman, but aspiring disc jockey
with David Tennant and Angus Macfadyen,The ITV series The Vice was also a cracking series where he played DI Pat Chappel and The BBC show Messiah, where again he played a cop, DCI Red Metcalfe where he learned sign language for scenes with his screen wife, and Rebus of course, when the show was resurrected in 2006, Stott was a first choice for many as D.I John Rebus, John Hannah had the role in the first incarnation, mainly due to it being made by his own production company.
On film Ken is probably best known for his role as the Dwarf, Balin in The Hobbit trilogy. He is a popular choice for voice work, as narrator for series such as Trawlermen, a documentary following North Sea trawlers, and Send in the Dogs, following the work of Police Officers and their canine partners.
One of my favourite stories about Ken Stott echoes the no nonsense approach of Rebus, on stage during Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge, he halted the play when a group of teenage schoolkids were misbehaving and disturbing the show, switching from his stage American to his native Scots accent he told the teacher responsible for the children to remove them, or the play would not go on.
The house lights were switched on and there was then a 15-minute stand-off as discussions took place with the offending youngsters.
The audience took the side of Stott and even resorted to chanting 'out, out, out' in extraordinary scenes. Eventually the three culprits and an embarrassed teacher was forced to creep away before the play resumed at the Duke of York's Theatre.
Recently Ken was in the TV series Devils playing professor Wade in the show. Look out for The Dig, a decent Netflix film about an archaeologist dig in England in 1938 also starring Ralph Fiennes.
Ken reprised his role as Chief Superintendent Bob Toal in the second series of Irvine Welsh's Edinburgh set cop show Crime.
Nominated for many awards, he was lifted two Scottish Baftas and a Laurence Olivier Award.

Hey!! Not sure if you watch variety mash ups. The actors on actors. I think the pairings are really good and sometimes really uh interesting lol Was wondering if you have a pairing that you would really like to see ?
Hey! Yeah! I love all of the round tables and the actors on actors sessions, although I haven't watched many of them yet this year (just been a very busy few weeks!). I've been particularly looking forward to watching Kieran Culkin's one with Claire Danes, espcially because I think Kieran actually interviews other people so well - his Actors on Actors with Dan Levy a couple of years ago shows that really demonstrates that.
There are so many Actors on Actors interviews I'd love to see, but I have Succession on the brain still and given these sorts of interviews are usually in the lead up to the Emmys, I'm going to do the main Succession actors and the current Emmy contenders I'd love to see them do one with:
Alan Ruck and Henry Winkler (Barry). Two actors who broke big as iconic 80s characters (Cameron Frye and The Fonz!) who made their careers in sitcoms only to get these new career defining roles in their 60s and 70s? Love it for them and for us and I feel like they'd be a lot of fun to watch.
Jeremy Strong and Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul). I couldn't tell you specifically why with these two, but I do think they've had some similarities career wise where they've been jobbing actors for such a long time and are both experiencing unmatched recognition and success in their 40s. I also think they're both really thoughtful actors who have real insight both into the interiority of their characters and the themes of their respective stories, and I just thinking getting to hear them talk would be neat.
Sarah Snook and Melanie Lynsky (Yellowjackets). I almost put Sarah with Rhea, but it feels almost too obvious, haha. Yellowjackets is a really different show to Succession, but I think there's this really interesting territory between the shows in terms of female rage, repression and survival that would be super ripe for discussion. Plus Sarah and Melanie both being antipodean - - it just feels right to me.
Kieran Culkin and Bill Hader (Barry). The comedy vs drama balance! The cycles of violence and trauma and the different outlets their characters have for that! Another opportunity for comical height difference! The convo would be great, I can feel it.
Matthew MacFadyen and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso). This would be the most British Actors on Actors imaginable, haha, but they're another one who have interesting parallels personally and professionally, particularly being the children of performers (Matthew's mother was an actress and Hannah's an opera singer), and to talk about that along with the English theatre scene, which they're both very familiar with too, would be interesting, I think.
J Smith Cameron and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary). I mean, who wouldn't want this one? Their respective backgrounds in theatre, their roles in formative 90s cinema (The First Wives Club! SIster Act 2!), both of them having paid their dues in a zillion one or two ep arcs on every imaginable procedural. I just love that.
Brian Cox and Harriet Walter (Succession / Ted Lasso). I mean, obviously, right?? We were robbed of more scenes with the two of them on the show, but the fact they've been acting with each other on stage since at least the 1980s is magic. Tell me everything, and also every headcanon you dreamt up about Logan and Caroline's relationship.
#sorry if you're not a succession fan anon haha#the brainrot is real#this was very fun to think about so thank you!#hbo succession#welcome to my ama

Happy 66th Birthday Kenneth Campbell "Ken" Stott, born on October 19th 1954 in Edinburgh.
My favourite shows of Ken's have been the brilliant BBC Scotland series, Takin' Over the Asylum in which starred as Double Glazing salesman, but aspiring disc jockey with David Tennant and Angus Macfadyen, The ITV series The Vice was also a cracking series where he played DI Pat Chappel and The BBC show Messiah, where again he played a cop, DCI Red Metcalfe where he learned sign language for scenes with his screen wife, and Rebus of course, when the show was resurrected in 2006, Stott was a first choice for many as D.I John Rebus, John Hannah had the role in the first incarnation, mainly due to it being made by his own production company.
The audience took the side of Stott and even resorted to chanting 'out, out, out' in extraordinary scenes on Thursday night. Eventually the three culprits and an embarrassed teacher was forced to creep away before the play resumed at the Duke of York's Theatre.
We last saw Ken n the TV series Devils playing professor Wade in the show about a worldwide financial conspiracy. only thing on the horizon I can see from him is The Dig, a Netflix film about an archaeologist dig in England in 1938 also starring Ralph Fiennes
Nominated for many awards, he was lifted two Scottish Baftas and a Laurence Olivier Award.

Have you ever watched Euphoria? Is so do you have any thoughts on the acting on that show? I always here mixed reviews.
I watched the first episode and half of the second one, but really didn't like the show, unfortunately! I might try and give it another go though – I was looking through the nominations and realised I'd actually seen almost everything in the 'main' categories this year, so might try and watch the few I haven't over the next two months before the awards. It's what I usually do for the Oscars, and I love getting a sense of what's being acknowledged and awarded and feeling the stakes a bit, haha.
