Since I'm still brainrotting about Paddy/Eoin while listening to the Hadestown UK recording, here are further thoughts about the Orpheus/Eurydice + Eoin/Paddy parallel, specifically in the 'All I've Ever Known' song:

So I'm walking to work, humming along, and then I hear Eurydice's lines singing about how she's always been alone and everything's cold and dark and she has to fight and fend for herself. Someone who doesn't even realize that she has been alone. Until she met Orpheus. (Does this remind you of someone? For example, an angry Irishman who barks and bites at everything and everyone he comes across? Who thinks that he will never be loved?)

And Orpheus sang about how he's always 'known Eurydice even before he met her. And he doesn't even know Eurydice yet.' (Hmmmm. Reminds me of Eoin who knew Paddy from his Ulster years, even before he properly met Paddy in the desert. And then, he really, really knows Paddy.)

And they go on to sing about how there's sunlight and warmth (the desert???) And hope that the winds will never change for them (yeahhhh that cursed first jump). As long as they stay with each other, it will always be okay.

And then one of them dies (granted it's Eoin who dies and Paddy is the one who searches for him, so the roles are reversed. But still.)

Anyways. The fact that Orpheus's lines are sang by Dónal makes me so much easier to imagine that it's Eoin waxing lyrical about Paddy. 🫠

(I can also start talking nonsense about how 'Wait for Me' is Paddy's thoughts about losing Eoin and his near suicidal behaviour after Eoin's death, which informs his character arc for the rest of the show. And when the Fates start singing/questioning 'Who are you??? Who do you think you are??' - it's almost like they're questioning Paddy's fitness to lead the regiment, fitness for command, questioning his sanity, making Paddy doubt himself at times (but Paddy being Paddy and his sense of conviction makes him continue. Even if it is hard and the journey is painful.)
