This is not really a coherent question and I doubt it was your source of inspiration, but the school/police/press/social response to Arwen's activism and death in Prayers To Broken Stone is reminding me very much of the reaction to the Kent State Massacre during the Vietnam War over on this side of the pond, and particularly of the subsequent Hard Hat Riots in NYC (an incident where a bunch of pro-war construction workers and office workers attacked a crowd of anti-war students who were protesting in response to the killings at Kent State, injuring many of them while the police stood by rather than intervening. The leaders of the hard hat contingent were later invited to the White House by Nixon.)
Obviously the actual issues Arwen was protesting were completely different, but it just strikes me as a similarly shitty and morally bankrupt response to student activism as was common in the 60s and 70s.
Yes absolutely!
You’re right on re the worldwide movements across the long 60s and 70s being exactly what I wanted to focus on thematically with the story - essentially showcase transnational activism through the events in these two countries, India and Britain, and connect what Arwen was trying to do in the 1970s to what Maedhros and Maglor were trying to do in the 1930s-40s, essentially the legacy of those final and bloody 20 years of the Raj and the ripple effect it had into Britain itself…
And yup in general it was an extremely turbulent period but one that built a lot of really interesting transnational solidarity links. So yes definitely the Kent State Massacre, Gwangju Massacre in SK, ‘P*kibashing’ in the UK after the Rivers of Blood speech, the complete clusterfuck happening in West Germany, the Emergency in India, the Bangladesh liberation struggle, and tons more etc.
So with Arwen, what I did was essentially mirror the Rhodes Must Fall movement — which has now been extended to more than Rhodes — but fictionalised and pushed forward a couple of decades — where “toppling” the statue doesn’t mean destroying it (as I think many people like to pretend that’s what it means to justify their discomfort towards the movement) but rather bringing the statues down from their pedestals atop buildings/crowning cities, and at the very least contextualising them with plinths that don’t just go “omg DILF 😍”.
I basically selected the most pathetic imperial statue (aka Buller, who genuinely was just shite at his job) to put up in the place of Rhodes to avoid the narrative being drawn into the Rhodes debate itself because it doesn’t really matter whom the statue depicts, as Gil-galad says, there’s no statue that should take precedence over a person (love my bedazzled king)…
And also — 100% on the press response! I wanted to compare how Arwen was portrayed - leather jacket, sunglasses, revolutionary-chic being the frightening image of the 70s, while Maedhros was pictured as being part of a ‘barbaric’ culture due to the folk art he performed etc. Essentially, how an “antinational” citizen is created via image politics etc, with Elrond serving as a palatable buffer between the two.

At an event where appointment letters were distributed to 1,239 newly recruited sub-inspectors, Kumar expressed the urgency of the matter. “I am telling you, complete the process for the recruitment of 78,000 police personnel in the next six months,” he urged DGP Raj, highlighting the need to bolster the police force ahead of the elections. Currently, the Bihar Police has a strength of 1.10 lakh, and the CM aims to double it to 2.29 lakh. The recruitment process for 21,000 personnel is currently underway, with formalities completed for an additional 20,000. Kumar emphasized the importance of including women in the police force, stating that 35 percent of new recruits should be female. He noted that the number of women in the Bihar Police has increased to about 30,000, asserting that no other state has as many women personnel. “The appointment of women police officers is making it easier for female complainants,” Kumar remarked, asserting that the law and order situation has improved significantly since 2005. Jailed Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji Resigns Ahead of Bail Hearing
In a significant turn of events, Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji has tendered his resignation from the state cabinet. This move comes just days before the Madras High Court is scheduled to review his bail plea amid ongoing legal battles.
Tumblr media
Senthil Balaji’s resignation, announced on Monday, marks a pivotal moment in a saga that began eight months ago with his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged cash-for-jobs scam.
The Raj Bhavan confirmed the acceptance and approval of Senthil Balaji’s resignation by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi in a statement issued on Tuesday, signaling the end of his tenure as a minister in the state cabinet.
The timing of Balaji’s resignation aligns with the imminent review of his bail plea, adding layers of intrigue to an already complex legal and political landscape. His prolonged incarceration, spanning over 230 days, has raised questions about his continued role as a minister while facing serious legal charges.
Tumblr media
During previous court proceedings, the Madras High Court had expressed concerns over Balaji’s tenure as a minister despite his prolonged detention, remarking that such a scenario did not reflect well on the state’s governance.
The legal troubles plaguing Senthil Balaji trace back to his tenure as Transport Minister from 2011 to 2015 under the government of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Allegations surfaced suggesting his involvement in a scheme offering jobs in exchange for monetary gains.
The case against Balaji has seen extensive judicial scrutiny, with the Supreme Court intervening after his petition challenging the arrest. The apex court’s intervention followed the Madras High Court’s decision to uphold the arrest and grant police custody to the ED, which is probing the money laundering aspects of the job scam.
Balaji’s arrest in June last year initially led to his dismissal from the cabinet by Governor RN Ravi, a decision later placed “in abeyance.” However, recent developments prompted the embattled minister to resign, reflecting a shift in political dynamics as Chief Minister MK Stalin and the ruling DMK party confront mounting pressure.
As the legal saga unfolds, Senthil Balaji’s resignation marks a significant chapter in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, underscoring the intricate interplay between law, governance, and public accountability.

1. Late
Unedited
Masterlist
Of course it was late. Of course everybody was already in their homes getting ready for bed. It was 11 pm. So of course everybody was ending their day, well everybody but Y/n. How could her day end when her husband was yet to return from duty.
She had half a mind to go to the station and drag him back home. No one could do that in Raj and she wasn't about to test those limits.
It would have been so much better if he was a farmer or bank accountant, why did he have to be a police officer.
The job was dangerous, uncertain and stressful. Not to mention even with his capabilities, he had to face racism as well. He usually came home with face bashed, bloody hands, gashed feet but always went back to his post the next morning.
He didn't really talk much but he constantly dropped hints of his iron strong determination. Once he set eyes to a goal, he achieved it. Whenever he was home Y/n try to engage him conversations and once in a while he'd let go and entertain her, answer her, tell her stuff she enjoyed. Once in a while he would talk and in the fewest possible words he'd reveal his will to her. He respected women, unlike her many many uncles and brothers he never once used force on her. He treated her fairly well.
She had grown up seeing her mother and other women of the household being silenced by the men. He didn't mind. He had never asked to stay quiet with the aggression she knew was in him.
So yes, Y/n was majorly conflicted whenever he came home late. It usually meant he was out hurting people for simply wanting to breathe freely.
"Adidev, why couldn't he be normal person? If he was putting himself in danger every second of his life for our motherland, I'd be more at peace than I am right now."
Y/n got up from the armchair and stepped out of the main door to see the street. Quiet as it was, the darkness that enveloped the earth made her heart thump faster.
She sat on the dehri and started fanning herself with the pallu.
She could curse whoever said time flies by. Time definitely didn't fly by, it stretched out till her heart came to her throat. It was 12:30 and her husband was still God only knew where.
She almost stood up relieved as a figure appeared in the distance. Finally.
Eagerly She collected her pallu and schooled an aloof expression, ready to scold her dear husband.
As the figure came closer, she picked on how lean it was unlike Ram. "Chandra?"
"Ji bhabhi, why are you our here? Is Ram not home yet?"
Nodding her head in a slight no, Y/n turned her back to the street.
"Bhagwaan hi jaane, why does he not come home to such a beautiful wife? If you ask me, I haven't seen anybody more beautiful than bhabhi but I haven't seen much, have I? Maybe there is someone fairer looking?"
Y/n hadn't even realized Chandra's wife was right behind him. The woman didn't have a subtle bone in her body. She knew that when she first came to this neighborhood after marriage. Today she realized, kindness wasn't there either.
But could she blame them, could she defend him; it was twenty minutes to one and her other half hadn't shown his face. He hadn't informed her or sent a word. She could say, "It might very well be his duty that held him  back," but that wouldn't make a very good counter either.
She knew it because she thought so as well, only difference being she saw how he wasn't a completely horrible person, his work made him so. Of course nobody would concur with such logic, in the past people had openly asked him to leave it and offered him a place at their factories, workplace which he had refused politely, sometimes.
She didn't turn, only listened on as her neighbor dragged his wife home. Instead of sitting back on the dehri, she went in sat on stool in the veranda, slightly rubbing her back.
With so much household work, Y/n never managed to find time to rest during the day, which made her back ache when she stayed up late.
"Ram please hurry," She whispered and started to pace around, unable to sit still.
As the clock struck one, Y/n's had enough. Locking the doors behind her, she stepped in her sandals and started walking towards Akhtar's neighborhood. If anyone could know where Ram was at this point, it was Akhtar.
It was almost fifteen minutes aways from their place and she managed to run and make it faster it felt. She took a step to knock but hesitated.
It's late, he must be asleep. But Ram? What if he doesn't know? I should've gone to the station first.
Disregarding her thoughts she rapped on the door. "Akhtar!"
"Bhaiya!"
Her throat tightened amd her eyes got moist all of sudden.
"Bhaiya please! Open up!"
She couldn't speak, her voice won't come out. She felt if she tried to make sound she would break down then and there. So Y/n continued knocking till she saw a sliver of light come from, under the door.
"Bhaiya!"
She prayed that he would hear her whispers and open faster.
"Bhabhi! Kya Hua?" Her vision blurred more and she blurted out, "Ram! He hasn't come home yet! Do you know where he is?"
She took in a couple of deep breath but her throat won't lighten. It felt like it was a vice like grip, like somebody was squeezing her up. Anxiety that had pooled in her stomach for hours now threatened to snap.
She coughed violently due to nausea.
"Bhabhi, bhabhi you sit. Sit here and drink some water. I'll go look for him, ha?" Akhtar hastily handed her a glass.
He'll go find him. He'll go find him. Y/n repeated it like a sacred chant. He'll go find him.
"Wait Akhtar, you don't know where he is either?"
Her heart could burst out of her body and she wouldn't have been surprised, she had never felt her heart go this fast before.
Akhtar slightly shook his head and went out running.
She wanted to follow him, but she didn't if she could. She had barely made it to his house. Her legs felt like they would give out the second she tried to  get up.
Adidev, please, keep him safe. Wherever he is, keep him safe. Please, keep him safe. I'll keep eleven nirjala Pradosh. Just keep him safe and bring him to me. Adidev, bring me my Ram.
***
Birds started singing around, signaling the early morning. Akhtar wasnt back yet and neither was Ram.
Y/n got up from the cot silently and walked out of the house. Today was trayodashi and she was going to follow up on her promise to Adidev.
Walking back home felt like going back to a prison, where everything haunts you. Where your own mind circles on you and kicks you down.
As she was unlocking, Sanjeev from the third house on the street came about.
"Bhabhi? Ram bhaiya didn't come home to you at night? What kind of a duty keeps away a loyal husband from his obedient wife?"
There was no use giving him a befitting reply because there wasn't one. What could she say that the kind of duty that requires you to be vigilant and alert and always working to protect the citizens. Only the British police was not vigilant and alert and always working to protect the citizens, it was working to protect the Raj.
It was protecting murderers, oppressors, criminals. She couldn't defend Ram's job without defending the Empire and she would die a thousand d deaths, bear a thousand such nights before she would do that.
Y/n respected her husband enough to stay shut in public where everyone was looking for reasons to taunt him, she didnt agree with him but she had promised him her support. Her opinions would not become the source of questions he had to put up from the people. Not today.
Especially not when being his apologist meant being the British apologist.
Quickly fetched water and bathed.
With a towel in her hair and a floral white saree on her body, she entered puja to prepare a thaal.
With belapatri, fruits and Aarti she stepped out, only to see Ram engaged  in a conversation with Akhtar.
She could've hugged him, slapped him, pulled his ears in that moment.
"Nice of you to finally show you face," both men stopped and looked at her. Akhtar wide eyed just stepped out, smartly.
Ram at least had a sense to look contrite. "Y/n-" He took a step forward to touch her.
"No, you could've sent a word, told me; I don't know at least told Akhtar something but no, Ramraju is petty petty man who doesn't think of his wife once," she stepped back and circled around him to go out.
She could he stepped forward again.
"God! Man, don't you see that I have a thaal in my hands? At least bathe before you even think of touching me."
He blinked slowly and backed away, "Acha meri Maa, but at least let your husband and say sorry before you go ranting your mother's rules to me.
Y/n I am sorry, I should've told you. It did not slip my mind. I just didn't know what to say."
"That you had work?"
"I did have work. To get information out of a few people. I know you never like hearing that, and you never like half news that I sometimes try to give you."
She swore she would've hugged him if he was half an hour early. At this
point she was just mad at herself. She was more relieved to see him well than she was sad  to hear what he had to do.
"Don't you dare go into my kitchen  before you have a bath."

Over the past month, a group of San Francisco police officers have been installed at various grocery stores, pharmacies and clothing outlets across the city in an effort to crack down on retail theft as it happens, officials said Friday.
While police officials offered few details on how the operation worked in order to keep details of the ongoing theft-abatement effort concealed, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department said officers made 60 arrests since late November.
“These operations have resulted in 13 felony bookings, over 47 misdemeanor citations, and they will continue,” SFPD said in a statement.
The operation, according to SFPD Deputy Chief Raj Vaswani, began in late November, and said it would last until at least next month, with the department planning on continuing it into January 2023.
“We’re going to assess it and see how successful it is,” Vaswani said. “Of course, we also have to look at the overall resources and how sustainable it is.”
Spokespersons for Safeway and Gap Inc. confirmed that their respective stores participated in the anti-theft operations. It was not immediately clear what specific locations of those stores were involved.
Vaswani said the operation also included Old Navy, Target, Whole Foods, CVS, Walgreens and Macy’s locations.
“Operations like this not only yield results in arrests and prosecutions, they also send a message that there will be consequences when you cross the line in San Francisco,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “There has to be accountability in this city and we will keep building on the strong partnerships with our retailers to address theft in their stores so we can create a safer space for both residents and workers.”
Of the 60 arrests, about half were offered diversion, and the rest are being prosecuted for various retail theft crimes including commercial shoplifting, petty theft and grand theft, police said.
What initially began as a concerted effort in downtown San Francisco has now expanded to retail stores throughout the city, Vaswani added.
“Retail theft is not a victimless crime. It hurts our local business. It hurts our workers who are getting their hours cut or losing their jobs. It hurts people who are shopping to feed their families and it hurts our seniors who depend on neighborhood pharmacies that are forced to shutter,” SFPD spokesperson Adam Lobsinger said in a statement.
According to SFPD’s crime dashboard, burglary — defined as “the unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or a theft” — is down 20% since last year. Larceny, which included shoplifting as well as things like bicycle theft and stealing of car parts, is up 9.6%.
“Addressing retail theft is a priority for my office and we have been working closely with the San Francisco police to ensure that there is accountability and appropriate consequences in all cases,” San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement.
Safeway spokesperson Wendy Gutshall said in statement that the company — which has changed store hours and added safety barriers in some stores in response to theft — will continue to work with SFPD on the operation.
“Safeway is looking forward to continue partnering with San Francisco law enforcement leaders to ensure the safety of our customers and employees,” Gutshall said. “Maintaining a safe and welcoming shopping experience at our stores is critical for us to remain operating in the city.”
Chris Nelson, head of asset protection for Gap Inc., said in a statement that the company continues to “struggle with organized retail crime in the Bay Area.” Partnership with law enforcement, Nelson said, was “critical.”
Shoplifting and retail theft has been notoriously difficult for police to track down, as many stores do not report all incidents of shoplifting to police, and employees are often told not to physically engage with shoplifters.
Still, in a city where stores have items like shampoo and toothpaste behind lock and key, retail theft remains a flash point in debates about public safety in San Francisco.
