Jailed Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji Resigns Ahead of Bail Hearing
In a significant turn of events, Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji has tendered his resignation from the state cabinet. This move comes just days before the Madras High Court is scheduled to review his bail plea amid ongoing legal battles.
Tumblr media
Senthil Balaji’s resignation, announced on Monday, marks a pivotal moment in a saga that began eight months ago with his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged cash-for-jobs scam.
The Raj Bhavan confirmed the acceptance and approval of Senthil Balaji’s resignation by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi in a statement issued on Tuesday, signaling the end of his tenure as a minister in the state cabinet.
The timing of Balaji’s resignation aligns with the imminent review of his bail plea, adding layers of intrigue to an already complex legal and political landscape. His prolonged incarceration, spanning over 230 days, has raised questions about his continued role as a minister while facing serious legal charges.
Tumblr media
During previous court proceedings, the Madras High Court had expressed concerns over Balaji’s tenure as a minister despite his prolonged detention, remarking that such a scenario did not reflect well on the state’s governance.
The legal troubles plaguing Senthil Balaji trace back to his tenure as Transport Minister from 2011 to 2015 under the government of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Allegations surfaced suggesting his involvement in a scheme offering jobs in exchange for monetary gains.
The case against Balaji has seen extensive judicial scrutiny, with the Supreme Court intervening after his petition challenging the arrest. The apex court’s intervention followed the Madras High Court’s decision to uphold the arrest and grant police custody to the ED, which is probing the money laundering aspects of the job scam.
Balaji’s arrest in June last year initially led to his dismissal from the cabinet by Governor RN Ravi, a decision later placed “in abeyance.” However, recent developments prompted the embattled minister to resign, reflecting a shift in political dynamics as Chief Minister MK Stalin and the ruling DMK party confront mounting pressure.
As the legal saga unfolds, Senthil Balaji’s resignation marks a significant chapter in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, underscoring the intricate interplay between law, governance, and public accountability.

Show of strength at festival time
K Thangarasu v. The Secretary (Tourism, Culture & Religious Endowment Departments) & 5 others
Writ Petition 21707 /2023, before Madras High Court
Writ Petition dismissed on 21.07.2023 by Hon’ble Mr. Justice N Anand Venkatesh
Background
This writ petition has been filed for Writ of Mandamus for directing the respondents to grant police protection to conduct the festival at Arulmigu Sri Rudhra Maha Kaliamman Temple at Sirkali Town beginning tomorrow (23.07.2023) till 01.08.2023.
Petitioner claims that he is the hereditary trustee of the temple & wanted police protection to ensure that no untoward incidents take place during the festival. The petitioner moved representation before the Tehsildar but it was not considered, the present writ petition has been filed before this Court.
Submission of the Respondent - Government functionaries
1.    There is a dispute between two parties in conducting the festival. A Peace Committee meeting was conducted by the Tahsildar, Sirkali, where both the groups participated but were not able to reach to any settlement.
2.    Another dispute related to the festival was who will keep the Vinayagar idol inside the temple. Since the Tahsildar found that granting permission for conducting the festival will lead law and order problem, he directed that no one should keep the Vinayagar idol inside the temple and no one should create any law-and-order problem.
Observation of the Court
1.    The purpose of a temple is to enable the devotees to worship god for peace and happiness.
2.    There is no devotion involved in conducting these festivals and rather it has become a show of strength by one group or the other.
3.    It is quite painful that this Court has to encounter writ petitions of this nature on a daily basis.
4.    If temples are going to perpetuate violence, the existence of temples will have no meaning and in all such cases, it would be better to close down those temples so that the violence can be averted
5.    Till the man drops his ego and goes to the temple seeking for the blessings of the god, the whole purpose of having a temple is of no use.
6.    The Police and Revenue have got other important functions to perform and their time is wasted by trying to resolve the dispute between two groups who have no devotion to god and are more interested in showing their strength over the other.
Decision
There is no question of providing police protection for conducting the temple festival. It is left open to the parties to conduct the festival peacefully without their ego coming to the forefront. If any law-and-order problem is created, the respondent police shall immediately interfere and take action against all persons concerned and shall stop the festival from proceeding any further.

The court was hearing a petition filed by S Tamilselvi, a nursing student, who asked that the prospectus for the Post Basic (Nursing) Course for the academic year 2022-2023 be revoked because it failed to include transgender people in a special category, which the court deemed "illegal." Tamilselvi previously obtained a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing in the state as a result of a High Court ruling that required her to be recognised as a transgender person. However, when she applied for the "Post Basic" course for the current academic year, she was not accepted.
