Gail's Blorbo Showdown

Adam Parrish is one of the main characters in The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, my favorite book series. A scholarship student in the local private school, he dreams of overcoming his trailer park origins and his abusive household and making something of himself. He also happens to (spoilers) make a deal with a magical forest that gives him magic powers. Also he's bi, so he's really got everything going for him. Art by Maggie Stiefvater herself.

Neil Josten is the main character of the All For The Game series by Nora Sakavic, one of my favorite book series. He's a bit of a mess in that he's on the run from two different mafias, one of which he's not even aware of in the beginning of the first series, but is so obsessed with the exy, the fictional sport Sakavic created for the book series, that he joins a college exy team and puts himself on national television. He's also demisexual, so he's got that going for him.

When in your life did you discover AFTG? How did you find it?

It was in mid-2020, during the pandemic. I was working from home all the time and was stuck in quarantine alone, and therefore spending a lot more time on social media to try and connect with people.

One day, I stumbled across @rainbowd00dles's aftg art on Instagram, and I got curious about the characters and the scenes shown. So I looked up the series and bought the e-books, and then read them all within a week. I then spent the rest of the year reading every fanfic I could get my hands on. I wasn't making fanart of my own at this point, let alone writing fic. I didn't talk to anyone in the fandom or even have an ao3 account. I was just quietly consuming content and looking at art in the background.

Then, for Christmas that year, my mom got me an iPad and an Apple Pencil. It was something I'd wanted for ages but had never worked up to spending the money on myself (I tend to have a lot of anxiety around large purchases and avoid them at all costs). I'd never done much with digital art prior to this, aside from the occasional, sporadic experiment in Photoshop and GIMP, but I threw myself into learning how to use Procreate, and one of the very first drawings I did was of Andreil.

By January 2021, I created this tumblr account and finally started posting my fan art. And then in April of that same year, I created an ao3 account, wrote and then posted my very first fanfiction ever. And the rest is history!
