The first time you see Wanda Maximoff, you think she’s taunting you.

She's always asking, "Am I alright?"

As if auspicious or in my pint

She stares at you from across the classroom. Iridescent, mischievous, calculating. You blink slowly. What do you want? Your eyes ask. Hers don’t answer.

I'll find the answer or a good night

Thank God the time is short

The moment ends before your brain can wrap itself around the situation. Those eyes flicker away. You swear you’re hallucinating, but it was the Wanda Maximoff that just stared at you for a moment too long, right?

Popular but in a cool way, dark but humorous, casual but breathtaking — that Wanda Maximoff, right?

And, yes, you always do that one thing

When you wrinkle up the nose bridge

The next time you see Wanda Maximoff, she’s not standing that far away at all. Instead, right up next to you. Almost delving into your personal space.

She’s just curious. That’s all, you tell yourself. It was a coincidence that she sat there, a matter of circumstance.

Her books have crossed that line of boundaries, chair a little too close. Her elbow is merely an inch from yours. It’s really nothing.

You shrug it off, because Wanda hasn’t said a single word to you.

The redhead’s response comes in nothing more than a nose-scrunch.

I'm trying to figure out what that meant

Wrinkling her nose bridge, eyes narrowed in a bitten-back chortle, glimmering with amusement. You follow her line of vision in silent contemplation.

You freeze when you see her fingers tracing the pride sticker on your file.

Fingertips, scratching the already fading sticker. The nose-scrunch doesn’t seem that friendly anymore.

A rainbow becomes a sea of black. A coldness washes over you.

I took it as a taunt

After that incident, the two of you never did speak for nearly five months. High school graduation happened soon after, and then Wanda Maximoff tasted like a distant memory.

Remember way back then in school?

It’s less history, and more present. Truth or dare, college classes.

You never thought you’d see her again, to be honest, but life swung by however it pleased. Apparently, life swung towards inexplicably alluring women.

Of course, Wanda being Wanda, had taken the dare for nearly every single round.

Oh, did anybody ever say no to you? Woah

A drinking challenge, with Steve Rogers, who tapped out three rounds before her. Done.

The word ‘kiss’ falls from Valkyrie’s lips before you can help it, because it’s Wanda’s turn again and you’re a hopeless fool.

Wanda’s been dared to kiss you.

‘Levitating’ by Dua Lipa has never felt heavier. The music is ringing in your ears. Cheers turn into wolf-whistles, turn into chants. Your skin prickles.

You couldn’t say no to her.

Before Wanda can brush off with a charming smile that no, you’re not comfortable with it, or before her eyes can bring up bitter memories from three years ago — you pull her into a kiss.

A hand resting on her annoyingly soft cheek. Your thumb finds the divine urge to run over her flushed cheeks and sharp cheekbones, but restraint pushes you back.

When you break from the kiss, your eyes are unsettled, because why did that feel good? You ignore the hoots from your friends, instead send a slow smile to the flustered mess that was Wanda.

You could taunt her as well.

You're always trying to leave the table

Phone calls, toilet breaks, unstable

Wanda Maximoff is not fine.

She has not been, since she started dating Jarvis. You don’t care, you really don’t.

But when he drops her hand and brushes her off mid-speech, you think you might find the strength in you to break a neck.

I’m fine, Wanda insists. I’m happy, so you can leave me alone. For once. Just ‘cause you’re gay doesn’t mean everyone is, alright?

Swallowing down a lump in your throat, you walk away with defiant eyes and a trembling bottom lip.

Wanda’s a good liar.

And don't you think that we can all tell?

Wanda Maximoff, to you, is shitty diners, and expired bubblegum, and late night car drives to quiet lakes.

Under the prerequisite of friends, that is.

When I get too drunk and jump in

You don’t mean it, you really don’t, when your fist flies and happens to knock into Jarvis’ nose on a hot Wednesday night.

He’s just been such a bitch to Wanda, and she’s just your best friend, you know, but there’s a line — there’s a line that you have every right to cross when he forgets her birthday, and she starts crying, and he gets mad.

To figure out what makes your brain tick

You don’t hold yourself back from spitting a snarl of foul words when Jarvis shoves past you. Wanda’s yelling at you, but you’re too tired to care.

Even Tony, so obstinate and so proud, gives you a sympathetic smile.

You’ve never hit a harder rock bottom.

I'm a listener, I'm a listener

When Wanda breaks down into your arms later that night, body wracking with heavy sobs and gasps for air, you listen.

You let her punch your shoulder, then you stroke her back, and whisper sweet nothings into her ear. It was all you’d ever be.

Until she pushed you down onto that rackety bed, meeting your lips along the way. Iridescent, mischievous, miscalculated.

Forget the number for the cab call

As you're dashing out the front door

The next morning is a rush, with Wanda grabbing this after that, saying that she was sorry, and she’d make it up to you. She also calls you a reliable friend, and you want to sink into the depths of darkholds.

She was halfway out the door before you opened your eyes.

You claim to try to dodge the catcalls

Exactly one week later, when you see Jarvis pushing Wanda up against the wall, your heart collapses in on itself.

She was your first love, and you were her little taunt.

Thank God the time is short

Weeks fly by, but it feels strangely quick. You’ve grown numb to the sights of Wanda and her stupidly pretty boyfriend.

And, yes, you always do that one thing

An informal college graduation party, at the same shitty diner with the same shitty pop music.

You don’t really know what you’re doing when you pull a pretty girl into a kiss, after about five minutes of flirting and fifty minutes of alcohol.

'Cause when you throw and drench me under your drink

Cranberry juice stains your white shirt in a few moments. You break away from the kiss, hardly surprised to see Wanda Maximoff with her face redder than her flaming hair, a now-emptied glass about to snap in her hands.

I'm trying to figure out what that means

You can’t feel, not when she was everything to you but you were nothing more than a friend.

“What’s the big issue?” you had drawled, eyes narrowed as you surveyed Wanda with a painfully indifferent expression. “Friends can kiss each other, right?”

The silence is loud.

Wanda’s nose scrunches, a painful imprintment into your godforsaken memory, and a dagger is stabbed into your gut because this time, because you know she's trying not to cry.

Her nose is scrunching, not because she's taunting you, but because she's blinking back tears, and her bottom lip is trembling so much. So, so much.

It’s stupid, the way you’re holding back tears yourself — you want to shout, and scream, because what did you fucking do to deserve the way she treated you.

But you join in with your friends on the cruel laughter, because you don’t know what else to do. Because she was never yours.

The last time you see Wanda Maximoff, you know she’s not taunting you, but you so desperately want to believe she is.

🎸ㆍBeing just another girl from the small and narrow-minded town of Hawkins, you were never much ambitious about your own dreams, trying to keep them as down-to-Earth as possible. But now you can't help but be amazed at how far you've come as you stare at the February issue of Sports Illustrated magazine with your picture on the cover. 

🎸ㆍAll the stress you felt while posing in that sparkly and very itchy bikini was worth it, you recognize now. You don't think you've ever looked this good in your entire life, and it was certainly the achievement of all your past daydreams. 

🎸ㆍYou have done a few photoshoots throughout your life, but none felt this real or this big. Those small TV commercials and good-girl ads on the interior pages of Seventeen Magazine had nothing on this. The cover meant you were in the same category as the other recognizable names in the industry, and your agent made sure that your gigs were on that level, too: editorials for Vogue, New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week, meetings with Gianni Versace and Todd Oldham. 

🎸ㆍYou were getting big, and your lifestyle grew bigger with you. After establishing yourself in Los Angeles your routine consisted of trips to New York, couture fittings, photoshoots, parties until early in the morning, and repeat. Sleep was important, too, though it was never your top priority. 

🎸ㆍEvery time you were out doing something impressive, like getting your pictures taken by Steven Meisel on top of Brooklyn Bridge, wearing only a Chanel gown and no shoes, a little voice in the back of your mind wondered what your friends back in Hawkins might be thinking of you now. 

🎸ㆍIn all honesty, you were never popular, like Steve Harrington or Cindy Cunningham. You have always kept a girl-next-door profile, being nice to everyone who decided to talk to you, but also preferring the company of your intimate circle of friends and staying in, instead of attending those big High School parties. So, you can only imagine their surprise to find out that the model in one of those magazines is you. If they even care. 

🎸ㆍYou just never expected to be answered by bumping into a very familiar face at the Rainbow, on one of your nights out with your LA friends. Sunset Strip was about a mile long, and yet, you two had met again as you were passing by to get back to your table. 

🎸ㆍ"Hey, hotshot," Eddie Munson greeted you with a playful smile, his big brown eyes drifting down your figure before settling on yours. He hasn't changed at all. Long dry hair, slightly flushed cheeks, and that same mischievous gleam in his eyes. He wore his old jean vest, the one with the metal bands patches. The only thing that was different was his new shiny leather jacket, which glowed under the bar's yellow lights. 

🎸ㆍThen, you go to sit at his table, where the rest of his band was. Corroded Coffin was grabbing headlines everywhere in the country, mainly because of their new approach to Metal, composing elaborate guitar riffs and melodic choruses, making commercial music but with that underground edge. But also because of their Dungeons and Dragons inspired songs, which weren't well received by the older audience and labeled as Satanic. Because of this, their albums all have the increasingly popular 'Parents Advisory' sticker. 

🎸ㆍThey are also known to make Nerd-Metal music, which was a genre specifically created to describe their music. Just one album out and they're already infamous. 

🎸ㆍAs far as you remember, Eddie Munson already had a reputation for himself back at home, but now that he had one hundred percent surrendered to the rockstar lifestyle, his notoriety was unprecedented. He was in every music magazine, every TV channel and everyone seems to know who he is – something that he handles more gracefully than you thought he would. Eddie seems to really like the attention. 

🎸ㆍWell, next thing you know, you're standing at the side stage of Corroded Coffin's gig at The Troubadour, and Eddie merrily walks up to you holding a backstage pass. I believe it's needless to say that this was the first of many passes to come.

🎸ㆍThe beginning of your relationship wasn't easy at all, given your busy schedules. It seemed like whenever you had free time, he had an interview; or when he could spend the entire day at his hotel room, hanging out, you had to leave for another tiring photoshoot. It took a long while until you figured out how to make things work. 

🎸ㆍBut you have to admit that those late-night escapades to his rented room in Chateau Marmont are forever engraved in your mind. Besides the endless partying, there was nothing better than laying on Eddie's side while he lazily played guitar for you, as you shared one of those long lounging chairs by the hotel's poolside. 🎸ㆍHe swears he had never written as many songs as he did when you did that. The thought of you, laying so gracefully on that chair with the sun coming up above you, on the horizon… man, it inspires him to the max. 

🎸ㆍTogether, you started to build the reputation of an it-couple, or whatever those teenage magazines say about you. All you know is that his fans also became your fans, especially the young girls. Suddenly, it was like Corroded Coffin's concert audiences became a sea of mini-yous – wearing clothes reminiscent of your style, haircuts similar to yours, eyeliner just as smokey.

🎸ㆍAppearing on the cover of gossip magazines started to be normal for the two of you. People would start the most outlandish rumors about your relationship, and according to the issues, you got married exactly ten times throughout 1994.

🎸ㆍBut your rising fame as a couple also brought the most recognized campaign of your career so far: the Guess Jeans advertisement you shot walking through West Hollywood, just living another normal day of your lives – well, with constant wardrobe changes. There were a bunch of really good pictures, like the one of you in all-denim at a record store, holding Corroded Coffin's new album; one where Eddie is sitting on top of a random motorcycle (he tried to buy it off the owner on the spot, but the offer was rejected) with his usual jeans and leather jacket combo; and finally, one of you two walking on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. His arm is thrown on top of your shoulders as you hold his hand, and the picture captures your matching boots perfectly.

Herri Urrats - or popular march - is an annual celebration done in Iparralde by the association of ikastolak or Basque schools. It includes concerts, activities, and a march to collect money for the schools and promotion of our language in the French state where it recieves no money neither protection.

Basque group Neomak has been chosen to create the song for this year's Herri Urrats edition. It's called "Hor gaude" [We are there] and its music video speak volumes: no Basque-speaker in the northern regions are alone, even if it might seem so. There's a lot of popular and institutional support in the soutehrn side of the Pyrenees.

Summary:

Naru Ayase is an 8th grader who can see the colors of music when she listens to it. For Naru, who is extremely good at decorating, becoming the owner of a shop like Dear Crown was her dream. One day, she finds out that the manager of a newly-opened shop is recruiting middle school girls who can do Prism Dance, and immediately applies. Naru begins to Prism Dance at the audition, and an aura she’s never experienced spreads out in front of her. At that moment, a mysterious girl named Rinne asks her if she can see “rainbow music.”

Propaganda:

WHERE DO I START.

First off: Lesbian activities. Ayase Naru and Rinne Amagi are very close friends and even end up living together. Naru is also only one of the few characters without a proper love interest which really helps further the Naru/Rinne ship.

Otoha Takanashi: often talks about fairy tales, but the only characters she ever sees as Princes are women. Baby lesbian, I love her.

Second: DRAMA. So two of the characters (Ito and Kouji) actually start dating, but their parents do not approve for reasons they are evasive about until it is later revealed in the story—[This part of the propaganda has been cut by admin due to possible spoilers]

Third: banger music. This series includes many covers of popular 90s dance tracks from band TRF, which I am fond of. It also has a lot of unique music written for the show itself which is also good, especially for a children’s show.

Trigger Warnings: It might need the emotional abuse tag for specifically one of the characters’ parents, who is a pretty extreme perfectionist when it comes to her daughter. But nothing else aside from that. It’s a kids’ show, so it never goes that far in terms of actual harm. Most things also get resolved peacefully.

#B2: Kageki Shoujo!!

Summary:

After being forced to graduate from JPX48 following a controversial incident with a male fan, Ai Narata swears to never interact with another man ever again. Using her talents and strong desire to get away from men, Ai auditions for the exclusive all-female Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts. The school is renowned for producing the best actresses that go on to perform in the famous all-female Kouka Theatre Troupe. Coming from the idol industry, Ai is the perfect candidate for the school’s hundredth generation class, but her aloof demeanor alienates her from her classmates. The eccentric Sarasa Watanabe is the only person who wishes to become Ai’s friend. She enters Kouka with the goal of becoming a top “otokoyaku” performer—an actress that plays traditionally male roles. After seeing a Kouka performance of The Rose of Versailles when she was younger, Sarasa dreams of performing as Lady Oscar one day. Unfortunately, Sarasa's inability to read a room causes friction between her and her classmates, including Ai, who reluctantly becomes her roommate and partner in many of their classes. Succeeding at Kouka will involve more than just raw talent for these young girls as jealousy, deceit, and the harsh realities of show business put their mental fortitude to the test. Will Sarasa and Ai be able to rise to the top and stand on the silver bridge?

Propaganda:

If theatre setting/schools is your thing, you’re probably going to love this series! We follow our protagonists and their schoolmates following their dreams to become actresses for the prestigious Kouka Revue. Not an easy road as they will have to face and overcome many challenges, the hardest ones coming from themselves. Indeed, the story is not afraid to address sensitive topics and their resulting traumas (see TW list) always rightfully handed. These episodes may be a bit hard to see if you’re sensitive to these topics, but the show never leaves you in discomfort: everything is properly addressed, and characters are cared for realistically.

The characters are all very well-written, portraying individuals with way more depth than they may appear at first glance. We follow their growth—or its start—during the series. Sarasa is a walking sunbeam, and her blooming friendship with the withdrawn Ai is a delight to watch. We learn to know—and love—all their classmates as well, as episodes switch focus to one or the other.

The OST is really good, with a catchy opening, and no less than five different versions of the ending song, a fabulous duet voiced by the cast! The animation features really pretty art with iconic details like the stars in Sarasa’s eyes. The series is a homage to Takarazuka and scatter references to famous real-life Revues and older famous shôujo manga series like “Versailles no Bara” or “Glass no Kamen”. Actually, it feels like a modernized version of their essence: roses, sparkles, spotlight, drama, all while staying safe!

This anime is like candy for eyes and soul, and I really hope we'll get a season 2 to explore the girls' voices further!

Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Pedophilia, Self-Harm

Nothing is too graphical nor explicit, just the right amount to let the unsettling situations be clear enough to watchers, and they’re always addressed correctly.

Self-harm: episode 5 focuses on a girl with an eating disorder, forcing herself to vomit (not sure if that really counts as TW?)

I've also found the most recent BMSS album lacking, but moreso on the musical rather than the lyrical side, as it doesn't have a certain depth their prior releases had. Their sound had gone softer and lost the black metal element in Rainbow Nights, but the vocals in Burning Bridges seem even cleaner in the overall composition and the guitar harmonies don't hit, making the songs overall less memorable. It's still a pretty decent album, but in comparison with Spectral Ecstasy it's middling.

I agree with pretty much everything you wrote. While I didn't like the overly lo-fi quality of the first albums, I felt the band reached its peak in Spectral Ecstasy, finding a perfect equilibrium between its black metal and old-school psychedelic rock inspirations. Just like you, I find the newest BMϟϟ release sounding too mild and even bland. Maybe it's just because I recently began to like black metal for the first time in my life. Still, Burning Bridges is solid enough, maybe I'll learn to appreciate it more while listening during the warm spring and summer days, seasons and the weather really change the way I enjoy music.

Album Review of the Week: Willow - Empathogen (2024)

Empathogen is Willow's 6th studio album! Her output is rather hit and miss for me, this is only the 2nd album that I have really enjoyed. I am not a fan when artists seem to be singing badly on purpose to make their music sound more intelligent, which happens a lot in her overall discography. Luckily, only a couple of songs on this album fall into that category - the rest is an incredible exploration! While this is generally considered an indie rock album, we get elements of jazz reeled in in some really creative and interesting ways. My husband used to play saxophone in a jazz band in high school, so he is more knowledgeable about things like time signatures than I, and apparently there are some really interesting ones here!

The first two songs, Home and Ancient Girl, fall into that "singing badly to sound smarter" category - either that or just making noise for fun but it shouldn't end up in the final product. I was really excited to see a Jon Batiste feature as I adore what he did with Lana Del Rey in Candy Necklace (2023). While there are some glimmers of excellent piano work, it doesn't overtake whatever is going on with the vocals. The backing vocals are really nice though!

The lead single, Symptom of Life, is quite supreme! The vocals, forward and backing, are gorgeous and the melody is a lot of fun. This song is very lush and has great structure.

The Fear Is Not Real is also very excellent, it is rather similar to the last track with its fast paced melody and layered vocals. Can't have too much of a good thing!

False Self is the closest to rock that we have come so far, we get some hard-hitting percussion and some more aggressive vocal - still with that lush layering though! The chorus is really amazing, there is a shift in the instrumentation that really reels you in. I can picture something like the Mario Rainbow Road, floating around to the tune. When she says "but I want to feel it, want to see it", I am reminded of Running Up That Hill, "do you wanna feel the way it feels", something about the tone of the word feel.

Pain For Fun features St. Vincent, whom I adore. Their voices meld together so well that I thought this was only St. Vincent singing and got confused thinking my CD player messed up (since the latest St. Vincent disc was played just beforehand the first time I played this disc). Anyway, the song itself is slow but very lush and beautiful sounding.

No Words 1 & 2 does that odd vocal thing BUT it is done tastefully this time and makes sense - and sounds good! The piano in the middle sounds great as well. Great little scat moment to break up the album.

Down gets into more blues and R&B territory, again the vocal layering is perfection. The song is way too short at right about a minute!!!!

The mood swiftly changes to the almost manic Run! While the sound and mood change is quite sudden, the song is well done! Willow's vocals are emotional, we do get some good vocal layering in the bridge again!

Between I and She almost has a mid-2000s pop punk feel, although a bit brighter. Some vocal runs about a minute in that sound great as well! "I Know That Face" isn't quite as egregious, but the vocals are a bit on the lazy side - although I really like the moments of quickness.

b i g f e e l i n g s is the star of the show, however. Symptom of Life got me interested, but this second single had me convinced that I needed this whole album. The jazz elements are out in full force and the melody is so crazy in parts! Definitely one of the top 5 most interesting songs that have come out this year.

Despite a few shortcomings, this is a very well done album and displays great artistic growth!

The MV for Natsuiro Egao de 1, 2, Jump! came up on YouTube — the third Love Live! music video — so I watched it, and got disoriented by two things I expected and one I did not. First is that it uses the pre-anime designs for everyone in μ's, of course; it came out in 2011, two years before the anime's first season. Second is just how rough the 3d animation is. It's already miles better than the first two, but the transitions between 3d and 2d are jarring; it's especially funny to me that a couple of times they seem to switch to 2d specifically because they want to animate Nozomi's boobs.

But the disorienting part I didn't expect was that the scenery was very familiar to me — because I've seen it a hundred times in Nijigasaki material. Everything that isn't at their school is out in Odaiba! The Rainbow Bridge and that ferris wheel are particularly prominent. I mean, it makes sense that the closest beach for kids living in Akihabara would be Odaiba, but still!
