“Night on the Galactic Railroad” ichihona

i read the novel and watched the movie recently so random thoughts below

(spoilers for NotGR too!)

OK SO uhm the way i initially delved into this was because i suddenly remembered someone online mention (VERY OFFHANDEDLY). that leo/needs trained set from ‘Live with Memories’ was based off of ‘Night on the Galactic Railroad’.

merged with this movie poster (for the film adaption where theyre all cats).

Ramblings…

of course this leads me to read the plot in its wikipedia page and. immediately find ways to apply it to my blorbos. (at this point i wasnt even sure if i remembered the book right/if this was even the right book… and im still unsure but whatever…) (im also bad at Media Literacy).

so i settled on ichihona to be giovanni and campanella. around middle school aged.

but at first, i had it in my mind that ichika -> campanella, and honami -> giovanni.

mostly because campanella drowned rushing in to save zaneli after he fell in the river, something i just felt was very Young Ichika… the impulsiveness, no hesitance to help another…

and that Young Ichika is someone honami wanted to be like. so giovanni being like Scorpio, wishing for a chance to spread happiness for the sake of others (like ichika)…

but i think ‘ichika being campanella and honami being giovanni’ didnt fit as well because giovanni was the one seen to be alone, while campanella was surrounded by friends and did nothing when they teased giovanni.

so once i swapped them around (ichika being giovanni, honami being campanella), i started having more ideas and… interpretations??

ok first off. campanella is likened to scorpio, wanting to (and unlike scorpio, somewhat achieving) ‘save others’ and ‘spreading happiness’. which i think tied nicely to what honami does in middle school, trying to be there for everyone, be an ear to talk/vent to and generally trying to help others.

ALSO GUESS WHOS A SCORPIO (honami)

meanwhile while giovanni and campanella are friends, campanella doesnt really do anything while hes teased by his classmates, just looking back with sympathy. something about how honami sort of… ‘chose’ (ok, was sort of ‘bullied/threatened’ into choosing) her classmates over ichika.

also i like the scene at the very end of the book, where giovanni stands on the riverbank after hearing the news of campanella’s disappearance/death. he looks to the distance while everyone wonders where campanella went, thinking “i know where he went. he went to the edge of the universe. i know, because we went there together.”

im just thinking that while (giovanni/ichika) thinks that, the galaxy can be seen, yes, but also the moon (its like… ~7pm? around the end of summer so its plausible the moon could be low enough to just be seen over the river), with like, honami (in that sorta transparent where theyre not actually there thing), back turned. yknow, since ‘mochizuki’ has the character for moon.

ALSO THE HORRIBLE SAD IRONY OF CAMPANELLA DROWNING, AND HONAMI’S SPECIALTY BEING SWIMMING…

the whole ‘praying like scorpio to serve others in the next life’ thing is. uoorhg. i feel like something can be said about how honami was always helping others, but no one really knew how it was… like? to be like honami, with her selfishness and fear of being bullied, cast out, left behind… etc…

the wikipedia pointed out that a sort of ‘focus’ in the story was about “giving your life in service for others” and uoroogh. are you getting me… (it can work both ways i think, honami and ichika).

also campanella mentioned liking apples once (1 time) and of course like the loser i am i locked in like HONAMI! hes also knowledgable about flowers which is also partially why i initially saw him as ichika

also with giovanni, how hes left alone in the end.

(which while it fits ichika, now im thinking of a scenario where its saki as giovanni… i dont think itll work out as well as ichika though)

i might add more to these ramblings… these are just my initial word dumps.

Oh Thomas, don’t you know? I’m not the only one.

Introducing the 3 gods of locomotives! Lady, god of steam locos. Damien, god of diesels. And Cassius, god of electrics. These three are siblings, with Lady being the oldest and Cassius being the youngest. They all have golden eyes to represent the gold dust and they all live in their domain The Magic Railroad. Each deity has an item specific to them. Lady’s is her hat, Damien’s is his goggles and Cassius’ is their mask. They also all have helpers, which are chosen engines to become demigods. Well, Lady has a helper. Damien refuses to choose another and Cassius still hasn’t chosen his.

Hey, I just got a question for you: How would the human Versions meet their engine counterparts? Would some of them get along better than others or where they become each other's rival

Oho interesting question! I think my human versions of the Steam Team would definite vibe well with their canon counterparts, since they're essentially the same character. Some have more friendlier interactions than others though!

Engine Thomas would be excited to see a human version of himself and offers to give him a tour around Sodor. Thomas is a little weirded out, but he figured that this other Thomas doesn't seem too bad. They would both crack jokes, talk about their work lives, and relate to each other's struggles. Then Engine Thomas talks about wanting to be a very useful engine™. RR!Thomas can relate to him on this, but he is noticeably not that comfortable to talk about it. Then he quickly changes the subject by talking about rollerblades, which amazes Engine Thomas cause he didn't think human beings can ride on their own wheels too.

Like Thomas, Engine Edward is surprised to see a human version of himself. RR!Edward had always imagined what it would be like to see a steam engine come to life, so he was just as surprised to see himself as one. The two get along well and have a friendly conversation. They find it amusing that they both have the name 'Old Iron' and RR!Edward thinks that the nicknames suits Engine Edward better. This is because it makes him sound like a majestic beast. Engine Edward thanks him and finds his human counterpart's glasses to be quite pretty. He wonders if the could also have glasses like that and they both laugh at the thought of an engine with glasses.

The Henries would be pretty awkward at first, not knowing what to say. RR!Henry breaks the silence by saying that he would usually talk to his engine as his emotional support. He remarks that talking to an engine version of himself felt strange and a lot more different. It was as if he was talking to himself in a mirror. Engine Henry worries if that is a bad thing, but RR!Henry claims that it isn't. He feels relieved and said that it feels nice to talk with his other self too. They would go to Henry's Forest together to admire the calm and peaceful environment around them. They both agree that being here puts them at ease.

Engine Gordon finds it outrageous that a human version of himself exists, since he believes that there can only be one Gordon. RR!Gordon couldn't believe it himself and thought "Damn, was I always this obnoxious?" They argue for a while until Gordon bursts out 'Ohhhhhhh the indignity". This makes RR!Gordon suddenly burst into laughter because that was the exact same thing he was going to say. This leaves Engine Gordon confused because he didn't find it funny. But he finally starts to warm up to him as he talks about how important his Express duties are and that he deserves more respect. RR!Gordon couldn't agree more.

RR!James is amazed to see that his engine self was bright and shiny and just as red as he was. Engine James was, of course, flattered by his compliments and marvels how beautiful RR!James looked for a human being. He responds by boasting about how he has a 'natural' beauty so he does whatever he can to dazzle himself up. This makes Engine James curious if he could do the same so that he could be more splendid. RR!James laughs, saying that engines can't do that, but his engine self scowls at him and retorts that he deserves the same treatment. Startled, RR!James suggests that he could try putting some makeup on him, which makes Engine James ecstatic and what to try it out.

The Percies are the most friendliest with each other since they both share the same cheeriness. Engine Percy would have so many questions about what it is like to be human and RR!Percy is happy to answer them for him. He was amused to see his engine self respond in such wonder. Engine Percy then sees RR!Percy's scarf and asks if he could try wearing it. (The last time he wanted to, things went horribly lol.) RR!Percy wraps his scarf around the funnel, hoping that it is comfy enough. This makes Engine Percy very happy and RR!Percy loves seeing him smile. He wonders if anyone else would enjoy seeing his own smile.
