Bc I need a pick me up and I also just had surgery, I give you an AU where Rae manages to get the vipers to the modern world
Here’s some things that I think they’d do
Key wants to teach Rae’s ex a lesson. She has to talk him down from his original ideas. They settle for egging his car to start.
It takes a while, but Marius no longer thinks of cars as these hulking metal beasts to fear. He actually learns to drive and ofc is a big stickler for the rules. What he does fear is Eric’s driving.
After getting over the scandal of it all, Emer takes to wearing pants. Especially sweatpants and leggings now that she’s learned about the gym and the myriad of sports she can try out. She is absolutely not wearing anything with writing on the butt, no matter how much Rae and Eric insist on them all matching.
They immediately take Lia to the optometrist and she gets decision paralysis trying to pick out a set of frames. The other vipers help, Eric and Rae picking a few that are far too flashy in her opinion. She ends up with a simple pair and is elated. The other two convince her to get prescription sunglasses with snakes on them though.
They go to the grocery and are in complete awe of all the options readily available. Marius and Emer are taken aback by the junk food and sweets that the others try at Rae and Eric’s suggestion. Marius, Emer, and Key immediately take to coffee and buy plenty. Marius won’t admit that he bought the huge tub of vanilla ice cream.
Rae has a horror movie marathon with Key. Ofc he calls out all the dumb decisions and says he could defeat the killers easily. Rae doesn’t doubt that he could if he figured out a way into their stories. Key is especially nitpicky when it comes to zombie movies.
They go to the club. Marius guards drinks while the others dance. Some guys make a pass at Lia, Rae steps in, they make a pass at her, and it takes all the vipers to stop Key from committing murder. There’s still a bar fight though. Lia’s tears help them narrowly avoid getting kicked out with the other guys.
They go to a convention and are simultaneously amazed and horrified by the number fans. Eric insists on dressing up as himself so he can properly meet all of them. He also buys plenty of art with himself and Marius. Key doesn’t think that the art of his lady captures her well enough.
They scheme their way into the Eras Tour (Key found a scalper and threatened them). Rae goes in the Reputation bodysuit much to the appreciation of Key who wears black to match. Eric is bedazzled from head to toe and Marius is convinced to wear a tshirt. Lia tries a dress with cowboy boots and Emer decorates a denim jacket. They all wear friendship bracelets. Key shows off the one Rae made him. Meanwhile, Marius refused to wear one till Eric feigned being heartbroken. Lia took to making them very fast, so she and Emer carry basket fulls.
Key gets into video games. He lets Rae win more often than she thinks, just to make her happy. She doesn’t know that he’s quickly becoming one of the top esports players in the country.
Marius learns about Eric’s lost love Netflix. He likes the documentaries and such. He’s horrified by Bridgerton.
Rae teaches them the Hot to Go dance. Lia loves it and Emer takes some convincing. She does like Chapell Roan and Good Luck Babe really gets to her.
Musical numbers aren’t uncommon. No one is surprised when Rae and Eric, or even Lia, burst into song. Everyone is a little surprised when they catch Key singing. Rae isn’t surprised that he likes Heathers of all things.
Feel free to add more~

LONG LIVE EVIL IN LOCUS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was delighted LONG LIVE EVIL was reviewed in @locusmagazine’s July print issue, described as ‘a wholehearted embrace of, and a commentary on, the high-fantasy high-angst high-romance end of the fantasy genre … It’s very entertaining.’ I do not share the whole review, but I did really appreciate and want to highlight the love for Emer, one of my POV characters, wicked maid to a wicked mistress, but… as you can see, it’s complex! Part of why I wanted to write a villain ensemble is that I wanted to write several ladies in a fantasy pressure cooker, with real connections that are being tested in real ways. I feel sometimes because people are (understandably) tired of ‘ladies being catty to each other’ there’s pressure to portray friendships, romances between women and literal sisterhood as all hearts and flowers or you’re doing something wrong. And I love me some sisterhood, but once more I choose villainy. I’d rather be wicked and write wickedly if I and the women I write can be wrong, and hurtful, and complicated people who have to navigate complicated situations.
In LONG LIVE EVIL I wanted to show how relationships between women can also be fraught, tangled, tested, heartbreaking—and hilarious when your previously cunning mistress starts yelling ‘I SEE THE FUTURE!’ (Which is what I’d consider doing if I got isekai’d, but I’d never seen it ((and when you don’t see something, time to go write it…)) and then of course, what is a false prophet but a storyteller, what is an ill fortune teller but a witch, and what did Cassandra get even though her predictions for Troy all came true in the end…) We get a lot of aristocratic PoVs in fantasy and those are extremely fun, but with Emer I did want to take a deep dive into what it means to, essentially, be assigned evil minion at birth. What if your job is to help create the sexy (& therefore evil) & somewhat artificial (& therefore evil) beauty but that’s not at all how you present yourself? Might living the belowstairs Downton Abbey life at Skullcrusher Mountain not drive you to become fantasy Lizzie Borden? So happy to see a spotlight for Emer—I love her and I hope you all will too. Sooooon.

Decided to color some Long Live Evil ladies as stress relief last night and thought I should share. The coloring book is Modern Fashion Illustration by Holly Nichols. Here’s two Rae’s and a Lia.

I finished the book a few days ago and now I'm gnawing on it like a bone. I've noticed a few things on my reread but something about what Key says nabbed my attention. Spoilers under the cut, if you care.
On page 296 of the ebook version, Key says, "Now I know any tale can be rewritten. Tell me the sky is red and truth a lie. You can be the centre of the world and the meaning of the story. I will make every word you ever say true.”
Then on page 425 the Emperor says, “The burning city is mine, and I am yours. I changed the story for you. So tell me the lie that you love me.”
Something about these two things, when put together, just breaks my heart. Idk if I'm reading too far into it, but the way these two things combine make me think Key wants to rewrite the story, or his interpretation of it. He believes Rahela loved the king, which is fair considering all that happened and the fact he's not a mind reader. But he wants Rahela to tell him she loves him, even though he thinks it'll be a lie. It just made me think of the whole every lie becomes a truth thing, and now he wants her to lie and tell him she loves him, because maybe hearing it would make it true, or maybe it'd just be nice to hear it. Which is just tragic because Rae adores him, but she betrayed him and agh! The agony 😭
Am I crazy, seeing things that aren't there? Do you see my vision? Am I coherent? This book suplexed me and now its got me in a choke hold.

Long Live Evil end of book Spoilers
It’d be insane if, since Long Live Evil’s cover is Rae sitting on Key’s throne the way he does at the end of the book, if All Hail Chaos’s cover is Key sitting on Rae’s throne the way she does but with his wicked grin of course. Like he is sitting there, grinning and staring at us. That’d be awesome!

as with all pieces of fantasy media that i’m insane about, i’m now attempting to build the Long Live Evil vipers (and marius) (i love him your honor) in DnD 5e!!
here are my thoughts so far:
rae / her many titles and pseudonyms: rogue, mastermind
the iron maid / emer: fighter, battle master (or champion? i’m torn)
key of the cauldron: rogue, assassin
the golden cobra / eric mitchell: bard, college of eloquence
the last hope / marius valerius: barbarian, path of the beserker
lady lia: bard, college of glamor (i’m not super sold on this one - she kinda has the vibes of a dmpc with commoner stats who ends up with a deus ex machina piece of information)
if anyone has thoughts/alternatives i’d love to hear them!

Rae found herself startled by how much she missed Key's presence and reassuring tendency to enact extreme violence on her enemies.

Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan
Absolutely devoured this book. I could see influences from Korean 'I got reincarnated as the villainess' style manhwa, and it was SO WELL COMBINED WITH SARAH REES BRENNAN CRACK HUMOR. I cackled, I cried; I'M READY FOR BOOK 2.
Thank you so much for writing this, @sarahreesbrennan. Before reading your author's note, I didn't know you had spent years battling stage 4 cancer. The way you brought in your personal experience of it to make Rae feel real was amazing. But most importantly, I'm so glad you're at a healthier place now. I've been reading your books since I was in middle school (all the way since The Demon's Lexicon), and you are an inspiration. <3<3<3

A character choosing to be publicly evil while accidentally changing the course of the narrative by being kind can be something so personal

One of my fave bits in LLE is that the Cobra’s band plays club music bc all the potential for bardcorr or full orchestra covers in an adaptation?? ABSOLUTELY ENDLESS!!!
Like the afformentioned Cobra scene and the later one at the pub? Put some Usher in there! Or maybe Low! What I would give to see Marius questioning who shawty is and why they’re descending!
And the Queen’s Trials? You cannot tell me that Circus wasn’t meant for that! We need the bards playing Britney while we watch a monster slaying montage!
And ofc Look What You Made Me Do is THE Rae scheming soundtrack!
I could go on about more songs, but I’ll save that for a longer post.
