With much ado, fanfare, and general excitedness, we present the runners-up for the 2021 rewind contest: @maispace, @pocketvikings, and @misterstingyjack!
The Great Modron March by @maispace Contest: Take a Chance (A card that uses random elements) This is an *excellent* way to use randomization. My favorite cards that use randomizing elements allow you to have some element of strategization. It makes the player feel more agency in what they’re doing, even if they don’t have complete control. So letting players choose what they want to do with a randomized result is a perfect way to do things. “Would you rather two 3/3s or three 2/2s”? This asks the player some interesting questions, which I like. The life gain is, most of the time, going to be whatever the lowest result is, I imagine, but if you wanted to make the players roll three dice to give them more of a chance of rolling a higher number, having it as a back-up for the last option is good. However, I’m not totally sure this does want to make them roll three dice. It’s already pretty strong as is, and this just makes it even more likely the player gets extreme value out of this. I mean on average you’re going to make three and a half 3.5/3.5, which is well above average. This should probably cost a decent bit more, and should definitely be sorcery speed as well.
Sirmiq, Guru of Endings by @pocketvikings Contest: One Mana Mythic (Self explanatory) I don’t know what it is about this design that caught our eyes, but something did. Maybe it’s just the simplicity of it? Whatever it is, I like it a lot. That’s definitely an effect worthy of mythic, and having it on a small body like this makes it interesting. This is definitely a solid way to go about “one-mana mythic”, where the splashy effect is gated behind a bigger mana cost. I almost want the body to have a little more honestly, just to make it worth playing it early, since it’s just a removal magnet otherwise. Ward maybe? I like this a lot though/ Grand Ragefest by @misterstingyjack Contest: Big Splash (Impactful card utilizing a list of mechanics) It took me a while to realize this was AI art, to be honest. It’s getting to the creepy point of “those shapes make sense in my brain”. Anyway. That’s irrelevant. This is an interesting card! The first ability is very reminiscent of Spawn of Mayhem, acting as an enabler for both spectacle and also fateful hour, as seen on this card. For those who haven’t seen the Big Splash contest, the two criteria were to use a mechanic from a short list (of which Fateful Hour is one), and make it as “splashy” as possible. Obviously this fulfills the first criteria, and it does a pretty darn good job with the second. It’s big, it gives you free spells, and it could very easily turn the game on its head. I do think the fateful hour part is just a tad too strong. In 20-life formats, 5 life really isn’t that low, and getting to chain cards off of the top of your library is almost guaranteed to save you. There is of course the chance that you stop cold when you hit a land, but if you have this card in your deck, you also probably have ways around it. Maybe a cost reduction could have worked instead, or some other way to make the card advantage a little stronger than normal, but not completely free?
And that’s that! We’ll try to get commentary out to you as soon as possible, but y’know, holidays and whatnot, so it might be a few days. Happy New Year, everyone!

Thinking about viera/hrothgar from a development standpoint...
So, I’ve been sleeping on the developments regarding the Viera/Hrothgar and the associated ragefest that seems to have accompanied it, and I’ve been having a lot of thoughts regarding why they did things as they did. Have a list of thoughts:
DISCLAIMER: None of this means I agree with SE’s choice. This is just their probable reasoning, especially since their stated reason of lore has been shred to pieces by the community.
1) Shadowbringers looks like it went over budget/time
Even Yoshi P himself has stated it. Square is pressed for time.
From the trailers and shown assets, you can see a clear decline in the quality between different assets that they showed during both fanfests, likely because the team is in a rush to get the product done and shipped out. Animations are a lot less fluid in some areas that they showed off yesterday, and Hrothgar/Ronso animations, textures and models look like they need some serious cleaning up compared to Viera. Yoshida himself said that he wonders if five months will be enough to finish everything by the release date. I can easily see genderlocking being another way of cutting corners to save budget/time.
On a side note, the fact that it seems like Yoshi P is getting orders to finish the game by an arbitrary date is super worrisome to me. I fear that it will have a negative impact on the final product’s quality, and the beta will be a *huge* indicator of that. I remember having to wait for days to get through Raubahn/Pipin EX, and I fear a repeat of that.
2) Making new creative products vs using old ideas
Simply put, making products based on ideas that already exist is a lot easier. There are countless references and art products created by Square Enix that depict female viera, and less for male. Same for male ronso, and so on. What’s going to be the cheaper way to go about this, from a development standpoint? Sticking to the character images that already exist, instead of pushing your creative department to create new things. This is doubly true when your art team has to run things through Square Enix generally to make sure that the creative products you create don’t run afoul of intellectual property laws.
By the way, this is something that a LOT of people don’t get: Even if Square Enix has the right to use the Viera, the creative people who made them are still able to protect the integrity of their work. In other words, if SE makes changes to a product they were given the rights to in a way that damages its meaning or integrity, creators can and have sued to protect it using a legal concept known as moral rights.
When you consider that, together with the time crunch, I can easily see why they’d avoid any potential mess and just nix it altogether.
3) Following the industry
One thing to keep in mind is that FFXIV is made by Square Enix, a Japanese company. Development norms there are a lot different than they are here in the West. One reason why a *lot* of eastern games gender lock is because it’s easier to design armor and animations if you create a fixed character. The more variance you put in, the more you have to think each time you create a new outfit. Not too long ago, we had people in the industry complaining that women were too hard to animate. (And in the West, no less, where the practice is looked down upon by a lot of people!) This is likely much the same- it’s a corner-cutting measure.
Does that make Square and the FFXIV team’s decision okay? Honestly, I’m not here to make commentary on that, but I do hope that this provides you all with a little insight about what is motivating their decision.

MtG Month of the Ship, Day 2 - First Date
Emrakul continues her exploration of mortal relationships with a distinctly different couple (thanks to Nicky Drayden!). This got away from me a bit length-wise... [edit: day 2, not day 1.]
I turn the bright feeling over and over, rotating it until I am sure I have seen it from every angle, until I am sure I have never grasped anything quite like it from a mind before. But then, my experience with the plane-bound has been rather limited. Mostly they either fled from me or worshipped me. Both are satisfying enough, but this -- something -- that I picked out of the minds of the elf and her pyromancer companion is neither fear nor awe. Is it something unique to them, perhaps? Or to those few who can cross the Blind Eternities?
I decide there is only one way to find out. I reach out again, back into Ravnica, but this time I avoid those brightly-shining sparks and settle my tendrils on two other minds. Less brilliant, perhaps, but no less deep.
“How did you manage to get a table here during the Festival of the Guildpact? It’s usually booked weeks in advance!” Zita gives Kodo a playful punch as an impeccably-dressed imp leads them to their booth at the edge of the dining area. Even though one is dressed in scandalously close-cut attire and the other is, plainly, a demon, they attract little notice among the crowd of other patrons.
Kodo flashes a sharp-toothed grin. “Let’s just say I’m still owed a favor or two from that prison thing we did.” He gives Zita’s hand a little squeeze as they sit down.
Ah, something else that hands can do. I should try growing some of those next time I’m corporeal. Tentacles are getting a bit stale.
“Still, Pivlic’s New Kitchen! The most romantic restaurant in the Undercity! You know, they only serve dishes for two? I thought for sure the only way I’d ever get in here is if we burned it down during a Ragefest!” Zita grabs a breadstick from the basket on the table and takes a huge bite. “I mean, free breadsticks! Are we ‘free breadsticks’ type of people now?”
“For tonight, at least!” This dinner is definitely going to put a dent in their budget for the month, Kodo thinks, but it’s worth it. As the waiter-imp pours them glasses of (sparkling!) water, Kodo’s eyes meet Zita’s. Those perfect dark eyes set perfectly against that perfect red makeup...
There it is again, that brightness. Somewhat different with these two than it was with Chandra and Nissa, the taste is more of smoke and blood, but the positivity is the same. I note that eye contact seems to be associated with these bright, positive feelings. I should grow some eyes next time, too. But where?
“You know… is it really okay for us to be here? I’m not really used to places like this.” Zita looks around at the other tables, the other diners, and sinks backwards into the plush couch.
“Yes, Zita, it’s all going to be fine. The table is paid for, nobody is going to bother us.”
As Zita grabs another breadstick, a second imp brings a menu to the table. “Our special Festival of the Guildpact menu, sir and madam. As usual, all dishes prepared for two, paired with a wine by our in-house sommelier. Would you like a minute?” Both Kodo and Zita nod, and the imp zips off to another table.
The pair study the menu silently for a moment before Zita turns to Kodo. “So, what are you thinking?”
“Not sure… what do you want?”
“Oh, whatever you think would be good!”
What are they doing? Do neither of them really know what they want? I reach a little deeper into their minds, and it's not that - they both have quite clear preferences. The roast indrik flank for Kodo, the grilled oyster for Zita. Why, then, not just say so? Why cede control like this? Yes, they are a bit nervous, but nonetheless it seems strange that both of them would give up the initiative like this.
“But actually! Just pick whatever you like!”
The waiter-imp circles back around to Zita and Kodo’s table. “If sir and madam would like a recommendation, may I suggest the magefire-seared benthid? They are fresh from the river today.”
“I think--” “--would that--” “--yeah, are you--” “Yeah?” “Sure!” Zita and Kodo stumble over each others’ sentences, but in the end manage to communicate enough to the waiter that he nods. “Benthid for two, then. I will inform the kitchen right away.”
How truly bizarre. They have arrived at a decision that neither of them would have made on their own. And yet they both seem pleased about it.
A small orchestra begins to play. Neither Zita nor Kodo recognize the tune, but they sway along to it anyways, occasionally losing themselves in each others’ eyes.
Yes, yes, lesson about eye contact learned.
A few tunes later, a pair of imps sets down a large plate of benthid legs, garnished with a colorful array of vegetables and dripping with some kind of aromatic red sauce. Zita and Kodo pick up their forks, each take a bite, and then in unison spit their bites back out onto the plate.
“These are terrible!” Kodo sniffs at the plate and wrinkles his nose. “Fresh from the river, they say, makes me wonder which river?”
Zita spits a chunk of benthid leg into her wine glass and laughs. “And you said this place was going to be fine!”
Kodo blushes and turns away to hide it, his heart racing. “Well… I thought… sorry.”
A different taste now, bitterness without the brightness. If that light is so easily lost, perhaps it is less important than I initially believed.
“Hey.” Another gentle punch to the shoulder. “What are you apologizing for? I know you did a lot of work to set this up, and… it’s still nice, even if the benthid tastes like it’s been through a Golgari rot farm.”
Kodo’s heart steadies a bit and he places his hands over Zita’s. “Thanks. I guess I… just hoped our first time out together as, you know, a real couple… would be special.”
Or perhaps it is not so easily lost...
“Well, don’t give up hope just yet!” Zita’s warm smile cracks into a mischievous grin. “You said earlier, the ‘table’ was paid for, right?” Her fingers dart between the fancy wooden table and the window right next to their booth.
“Yeah, I did--” Kodo’s eyes widen as he follows Zita’s fingers. “--you’re not serious.”
“I’m deadly serious. We can finish our dinner down by the docks, get some real proper-tasting fried benthid.”
Now both of them are grinning widely.
“Well then!” Kodo’s voice transforms into a roar as he picks up the table by one leg and swings it around like a bat, shattering the window easily.
“Don’t worry, we’ll pay you back…” Zita strikes a pose and addresses the shocked diners and wait staff, “...next Ragefest!” Then with loud whoops, she and Kodo tumble through the broken window and dash off hand in hand, fading within seconds into the mists of the Undercity.
That is as good a time as any to let them go, I believe. Back to my home in the moon my tendrils return. Was this exploration a success? Certainly it convinces me that this feeling is not limited only to the spark-bearers. But nothing has yet afforded me a clear sense of what the feeling is, or how it comes about. It does not even seem to require any sort of objective success to trigger it.
Fear and awe, I know well have to produce. This something-new is distinctly different.
Perhaps… I’ll keep looking.

you seem to know. a lot more abt homosuck than i do and im trying to continue reading it and shit but. what was the act/part where like. they doom the timeline or smth and then reset the timeline and make the beta universe w/ roxy and jake and shit???
that shit culminates in (s): cascade, so late act 5 act 2 if you want some context to the bullshit happening. i don’t have a fixed jumping-in point but if you want to read the gamzee ragefest just. start a5a2 normally and if you’re already caught up there i think starting at (s) 3x showdown combo would be a pretty good start

Falcarin for that problematic OC thing (have fun spending the next 5 hours typing)
Rinny: A VERY PROBLEMATIC BOY
1. He eats people
2. Is a racist dickbag, who believes Altmer are superior at basically everything. If pointed at direct evidence stating otherwise, he will just say that particular thing doesn’t matter anyway.
3. hates most animals, and they tend to hate him too. Spiders are a strange exception for some reason. Talk about spooky.
4. HE EATS PEOPLE
5. is either mildly irritated or in full-blown screaming ragefest, there is no emotional in between
6. Petty is his middle name (if Altmer used middle names it would be, anyway)
7. Purposely gives long-winded and dramatic speeches, even mid-combat because he is that Extra(tm)
7. Did I mention he EATS PEOPLE??

Norin, the Chased: Lovely design. I love references.
Law of the Jungle: So if this is one of the strongest creatures you control (eg 2+ creatures with 5 power and the rest are 4 or less) this still goes away. I don't like it. But it's a nice design nonetheless.
Juri, Ragefest Ringleader: I agree with the commentary.
Congratulations!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Winners!
Congrats to this week’s winners!!! You all did an excellent job of working with tools someone else made, and of making clever designs that tell you about the environment they’re made for. There is some really good work on display among so many entries this week.
Norin, the Chased by @masternexeon
Putting hide on Norin is already off to an excellent start. That’s just good, fun flavor. And you made a second excellent choice in showing what he’s hiding from. That’s not necessary for every hide card of course, but here it’s a good choice cause it really plays up the cowardice. I like that you kept this design simple, with no unnecessary frills. This design is clean, fun, flavorful, and powerful but not without its limits. Top notch.
Law of the Jungle by @1001gecs
This is a fascinating card. Is it good? I don’t know! I really have no idea how to evaluate it from a player perspective. So you steal a creature and it grows over time. But when it grows too big, it stops listening to you and returns to its original controller. Which seems weak for six mana, but this has reclaim too, so it’s not just normal six mana. The flavor is excellent too- you scare it into submission by having a bigger creature, but when it becomes the biggest thing around, that doesn’t work anymore; the name really ties it together. I’m also interested in how this works in an environment that has more reclaim running around, cause you can cast reclaim spells to keep the creature in check. This is a really clever design and seems fun to play with, nice work.
Juri, Ragefest Ringleader by @hiygamer
As you probably noticed, there were a lot of raise hell submissions. This is the one that stood out to me the most because it takes into account what the set around it looks like. If raise hell is a mechanic used in the way its creator and many a contestant used it, as a cost for some effect, and possibly as a rakdos guild mechanic, you might be making yourself raise hell a lot which isn’t fun. But what is fun is getting your opponents in on the action as well. I think the straightforwardness does this favor- it says “I’m bringing myself down and I’m dragging you down with me”. I think this would work better as a signpost uncommon than it does as a rare tbh. It gives you a real reward for what it seems like these colors would be doing in this set. But if you want to keep it at rare, I’d cut the “triggers only once” bit. Maybe you could even get away with that at uncommon. Difficult to say without knowing what the other hell-raising cards look like.

Stonewick [SMP]{Whitelist}{18+}{1.12.2}{DynMap}{Dedicated Server}{No Resets}
Stonewick - Semi-Vanilla Tight-Knit Community
💖 Heart of Our Community 💖
Our spawn was inspired by small-town living like the play style in beloved games such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. We like to love things like jobs, townships, player shops, and trading. Our goal is to provide vanilla-feel, with a few semi-vanilla benefits that make it a little easier and more fun. Some like to call it "vanilla with sprinkles". We just call it fun! ;) We are constantly having monthly holiday events and weekly get-togethers, game nights, build contests, and PvP events. We try to have something for everyone and teach those who want to learn.
We are a tight-knit group of players from all around the world who are looking for similar players to join our minecraft family. We keep active players in the range of 60 - 80, this means we sometimes close applications. We enjoy being a medium sized server as to not be overwhelming, but still maintain activity during all hours of the day. Because our players are so diverse, that typically means we are active at all hours of the day! We provide a fun atmosphere for players in the US, UK, Canada, Europe, Australia and China on a dedicated server hosted in New York.
Our player base is well balanced, roughly 50/50 male/female and between the ages of 18 - 65 (so far). The majority of our players are between ages 25 - 50 and we also have a strong community of mature university students ages 18 - 25. Stonewick is co-owned by a married couple (jellyplz & pointyy) who are young at heart and hope to meet new friends on this journey! Our staff is well balanced with mature players both male and female from all over the world.
We aren’t just building blocks, we’re building friendships. The majority of our players are coming from console to PC or are just coming back to MC after a hiatus. We're a very warm, friendly community and patient with all questions! It's more fun to learn or relearn a game with friends to help along the way. :) We are a community of mature adults who enjoy wholesome fun in Minecraft and other video games.
We are proud of our reputation as a mature server with a welcoming community of good, honest people.
