Half-size souki soba with rafute at an Okinawan place I've always wanted to try! I'd have gone earlier if I’d known they offered half-size portions. The noodles were doughy and delicious, and the rafute fatty pork was unbelievable. Overall it was a bit heavy—as soon as I saw the size of the pork, I ordered a salad to soak it up. No regrets at all though. If you think you don't like fatty pork, this might change your mind.

**i couldn't find any good english resources on this term (岸壁採集), but it seems to be referring to catching larval fish and other small sea creatures from around the docks. it's basically what Koutarou was doing in chapters 18-20.
***yes this is part of the original text. i love this guy.

Finished the last day of the term and we celebrated at an Okinawan restaurant in Nomoka area of Umeda.
Shikwasa juice and Okinawan tofu. I liked the shikwasa juice in Okinawa better, but it still hit the spot: tastes somewhere between orange and lemon. The tofu is more firm and has a stronger flavor than I'm used to, but I enjoyed it. Also umi budou - very nice but better in Okinawa - and rafute (braised pork belly). I love the tenderness of rafute, but the sauce was very thick and savory. I prefer a little bit of sweetness. BF loved it though and liked it better than the other version.
These two were my favs. Purple sweet potatoes croquettes, which came with soy sauce and salt. I liked it best with the salt but it was amazing just by itself. Also mozuku tempura again, just as delicious as when I had it in Okinawa.
BF also had pork menchi katsu and tbh I was so tempted to get more of the purple potatoes... But I was so full by the end that I had to let BF finish my rafute hahah. Will def go back for them though. Was nice to be there on a Tuesday when there were a lot of people, of course, but it wasn't as horribly crowded as a weekend.
Some cool art around Nomoka area:
The sparkly tree with the floor aurora was really cool, but you could tell it hadn't been dusted in like... ever hahaha
And I love art made from upcycled trash, those owls are my fav

Museo della Propusnica: Botte da orbi tra DiPi e Zibi

Giant Okinawan lunch! Highlights are souki soba (which you’ll notice are not buckwheat) and rafute-don, fatty pork over rice. Reeeally delicious meat. Comes with benishoga (pickled ginger) and spicy Chinese mustard.
From right to left, the little sides are pig’s ear (not my favorite), umi budou (literally ‘sea grapes’—a type of sea vegetable that bursts in your mouth like little green ikura), and a pickled... something from the allium family. Astringent and nice.

When I wrote about buta kakuni, I mentioned the Okinawan version that is called rafute: we ordered this dish at Okinawa Shokudo - Sora to Umi to Taiyo, very close to the Motosumiyoshi train station. Delicious meat and very yummy ajitsuke tamago!

I have a tiny headcanon that Destiny Islands' culture would actually be somewhat more mildly influenced by Okinawan culture than that of mainland Japan’s — and that this also extends, to some degree, to traditional Okinawan cuisine as well.
Aika, for years before coming in to Kairi and Kenji’s lives, had a passion for cuisine and cooking in general, and after her marriage to Kenji would cook all the time for him and Kairi, enough so to the point Kairi fell in love with her recipes — her absolute favorites of which included, but were not limited to, the Destiny Islands equivalents of:
Chanpurū — an Okinawan stir-fry dish consisting of tofu, combined with either vegetables, meat, or fish (with Destiny Islands’ surrounding waters providing an income of the latter for this very dish), and other ingredients including egg, moyashi (bean sprouts), gōyā (bitter melon), and whatever the Destiny Islands equivalent of Spam would be (the latter being more Okinawan in its usage than for that of mainland Japan).
Chinsuko — a traditional Okinawan shortbread-like sweet biscuit.
Rafute — an Okinawan pork-belly dish, stewed in brown sugar and soy sauce.
Soki — a stewed pork specialty often served with Okinawan soba.
TLDR; Kairi might not be a native Destiny Islander by birth, sure, but damn if she didn’t love the local/traditional (more often than not Okinawan-inspired) dishes growing up.
#✾ — headcanons .#✾ — character study .#/ my dad is retired Air Force and we spent three years stationed at Kadena AFB in Okinawa when I was growing up... I miss it. a lot.#/ hence this headcanon. 👉🏻👈🏻
