If you go the Franz West/Joe Bradley show (highly recommended) at Christie's new West Galleries, make sure to also see "Columbia Recounted" -- a compelling group show of Contemporary Colombian art. Included are an array of Rafael Gomezbarros' "Casa Tomada" sculptures. Each piece is fifty centimeters-long and resembles an ant but is made from two casts of human skulls tied together with rope. Works from the series have been shown swarming across multiple facades in Colombia, including the National Congress building in Bogota. The work evokes the plight of displaced persons globally and also of those "disappeared" or killed in Colombia. The title of the series is taken from a novel by Julio Cortazar.
