Mary Ellen Spook Farm
In January of 1922, farmer Alexander MacDonald, his wife Janet, and their adopted daughter Mary Ellen fled their home in Caledonia Mills, Nova Scotia after a rash of poltergeist activity, including more than 30 unexplained fires. Though several researchers, journalists, detectives, and paranormal investigators would eventually examine the farm and house, the so-called “fire spook” was never fully explained.
The poltergeist activity that had plagued the household for almost an entire year included moving the cattle around when no one was in the barn, mixing ashes into the stored milk, and even braiding the tails of horses. Most notable, however, were the fires which earned the haunting its name.
The fires would spring up spontaneously all over the house and grounds, often far from the hearth or any other source of a spark. Everything from wallpaper to wet towels were said to burst into flame: it got so bad that the family organized a kind of “neighborhood watch” to guard against arsonists, though none were ever found. Eventually, the family fled the property for good.
Once the family moved out of the house, journalists and would-be paranormal investigators moved in. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was invited to explore the phenomena. Some of the most notable accounts include those of Harold Whidden, a reporter from the Halifax Herald, and police detective Peachey Carroll, who spent two nights in the house. During this time they both experienced several odd events, including the feeling of being slapped on the arm and face by phantom hands. Whidden was so troubled by his experiences that he never published them in his lifetime, though they have since been released by his family.
Another prominent investigator who visited the home for several days was Dr. Walker Franklin Prince, who concluded that the poltergeist activity emanated from the family’s then-15-year-old adopted daughter, Mary Ellen–this in spite of the fact that Dr. Prince, himself, experienced no unusual phenomena during his stay. Members of the family were even brought back to the house during his investigation in an attempt to “trigger” the ghost. Dr. Prince did, however, report unexplained rapping noises in his office back in New York for several weeks after he had completed his investigation into the Caledonia Mills “Spook Farm.”
Unfortunately for Mary Ellen, Dr. Prince’s suggestion that she was the cause, albeit unknowingly, of the fires and other poltergeist activity stuck with her throughout her life. People began calling her Mary Ellen Spook, and, according to some accounts, she was even confined to an asylum for many years. Regardless of the cause, after she and her family moved away from the farm in Caledonia Mills, the phenomena ceased.
However, that wasn’t the end of the story of the Caledonia Mills Spook Farm. Over the years, several other explanations have been put forth as new detectives attempt to solve the mystery. Edward J. O’Brien, a lecturer who stopped off at the nearby St. Francis Xavier University, posited that the fires might have been caused by radio waves passing through Caledonia Mills between the radio towers at Wellfleet, Massachusetts, and Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, though to modern science that theory sounds perhaps even more preposterous than “fire spooks.”
Arsonist or no, the Caledonia Mills legend persists. Even today, long after the farm and house have disappeared, people say that if you take home any item from the property, your house will burn down. According to one couple, who call themselves P.O.N.I. (Pair of Normal Investigators), “This has been tested by regular every day people and the buildings always catch fire.”

Fun things I scripted into my Hogwarts dr 🧹✨
We have yearbooks which include a group photo of all the house pets
It's tradition for 7th year dada/gryffindor students to gift Lupin squeaky toys at the end of the year
Part of the muggle studies curriculum is studying Shakespeare and it is tradition for NEWT students to stage the play they are studying
There is a broomstick motorway running through the entirety of the UK
There is an interhouse common room called the Hall of Concurrence (nicknamed Conkers) that has a tuck shop selling crisps, sweets, pasties etc.; a retro television that shows quidditch matches and wizarding tv channels; and lots of game equipment like pool tables, chess sets, board games etc. The tuck shop also does popcorn for weekend film nights and every Monday the folk club do an informal music session anyone can come and listen to.
Each common room has a kitchenette for making hot drinks and fixing a quick breakfast before quidditch practice. All the mugs are magically tailored to each student and there is an informal doling ceremony at the beginning of the year where we find the perfect mug for us
Hogsmeade has a muggle style corner shop with a post office so muggleborns can go buy their favourite childhood brands or send their parents a letter via muggle post
The three broomsticks hosts a pub quiz every other Sunday and there is an informal house tournament throughout the year to see who can accumulate the most points - the winning house gets a trophy and a butterbeer discount for the next academic year
There is a player of the match trophy for every quidditch game and a player of the tournament each year
On Dumbledore's memorial day Hogwarts hosts a ten pin bowling tournament that all the professors are contractually obliged to take part in.
There is a statue of dobby outside the kitchens and his socked feet are gold from being rubbed by students for good luck in their exams and love life
Lee Jordan has a radio sketch show called Lee Jordan's Magic Show that is super popular and lots of students tune in on the common room radios every week
It is tradition to sing Caledonia out the windows of the Hogwarts Express as it leaves platform 9 ¾ (I am so in love with this one I would say it's my most vivid dr memory? I can feel the passion in yelling 'let me tell you that i love you, that I'll think about you all the time' at my parents with a chorus of dewy eyed students it's so vivid in my mind god i need to shift)

So cool you’re in Liverpool for uni!!! I am hoping to go to England next year if I can save enough (I’m in the U.S.) and stop by Liverpool. Do you have any recs of good restaurants, coffee shops, etc or favorite areas/sights, Beatlesy or not? I mostly want to see the cavern and the docks, not sure what else yet.
Hi @therealallenklein! Sorry sorry sorry for forgetting to reply to this, but back on here for a minute (at long last)
My favourite coffee shop in liverpool is called Artefact, its a weird coffee/vintage shop, but has some real chill vibes and decent coffee.
Im still yet to do this, but the radio city tower seems like a really cool sight seeing activity
Would also recommend checking out some pubs here — Ye Cracke, The Pilgrim and The Jacaranda are all pubs the Beatles went to, so pretty cool to go to as a fan. The Belvedere, The Caledonia and Red Lion are also pretty good (not beatle related tho lol).

Happy 80th Birthday Scottish singer Eve Graham, born April 19th 1943 at Auchterarder.
Eve started singing aged twelve and was asked to sing for Cyril Stapleton in London who, together with Joe Loss, led the big orchestras in the 60s. She then sang as part of the band The Nocturnes, with Lyn Paul, and it was her mum who said they should apply for a new group called The New Seekers, the band were an overnight success.
They hit the American charts, which brought them to the attention of Coca-Cola singing the jingle “Buy the World a Coke” on its advertising campaign, the song was reworked as I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing, which was a global hit, selling a phenomenal 96,000 copies of their record in one day, eventually selling over 12 million copies worldwide
The group went on to have hit records such as Beg, Steal Or Borrow and You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me, meant bigger venues, huge crowds and tours with Liza Minnelli, Neil Diamond and Gene Pitney. The line up changed in 1974 and Graham said the magic had gone and left to pursue a career on the cabaret circuit.
In an interview she said “I couldn’t do a concert now as I’m 72,".” But comeback she did! In 2018 she stepped back into the music scene, releasing a brand new album titled A Matter of Time, ( The Nashville Dream”), the album includes a version of Caledonia, she even hit the stage again embarking on a nationwide tour that year. Graham also said that owing to contractual problems she has not received any royalties since 1973.
She declined the advances of Hollywood actor Burt Reynolds, had a fling with football legend George Best, and lived with TV and radio presenter Ed Stewart.
Eve went on to marry fellow band member Kevin Finn in 1978 When Eve left New Seekers that same year Kevin also left and the pair toured as a duo instead and even released one single together, Ocean and Blue Sky. Sadly, Kevin passed away in February 2016 at the age of 70 having being diagnosed with polycythaemia, a blood disorder.
Eve Graham lives in the cottage she shared with her late husband in Abernethy a village in Perth and Kinross with her two Lhasa Apso dogs, who she says are like the children they sadly never had.

You wouldnt believe how cool i am if i told you but ill try anyway lol
I threw down my sidearm and stood still pants free while a k9 sawed open my femoral artery because someone called the cops on me for being loud at home
I did a frankly underappreciated study of ringtailed lemurs in madagascar thereby fulfilling my life dream by age 25
I wrote a novel that i personally enjoy and can philosophically stand behind as meritorious
As an escort i hooked up with like 500 people so i bet my number is higher, stonks cray
i have cool piercings and cool tattoos too so neenerneener
Not sure i could beat you in a footrace anymore but like I'd give it a shot
If youve never been surfing ive surfed more than you
Ive been on more roadtrips, more rooftops, ive been to more parties, my available wardrobe is better aesthetically
Ive boated deep water alone, ive boated alone along the coast for days
If you cant skateboard to save your life, im better at it. If youre not an olympian im probs better at kayaking (or i was, on T)
I was a bike courier for a winter's month in the biggest, busiest city in the country (not on T)
I can open an oyster, but of course, the oysters themselves arent fans. I can catch and humanely (?) kill and cook a crab, but again, they dont like it so its murder. Thats just murder im bragging about now. (Im also a decent novice forager and chef of invasive weeds.) I have years of experience in caring for a flock of egglaying fowl, a small group of sheep, and small goats.
I once hitchhiked to IDA in december, i once hitched montreal to squamish in july to camp at fastcore fest
Ive met tony bourdain and chuck palaniuk in person, rip tony...i fucked a guy who had to get hunter s thompson to and from a radio station once
I saw pet shop boys and new order live. I saw elton, stevie nicks, arlo guthrie, matt good, acid mothers temple, swans, omar souleyman, thee nodes, tribunal, crosshairs, killrats, too many area bands to count really... antivibes, vcr...went to a rave in an old funeral parlor, a guerilla one in a park....i saw pusha t and le1f on the same stage for free plus free beers (sponsored event by vice and budlight lime...future islands played too) ...i saw lana del rey for free, i saw nicki minaj and meek mills for free. I saw flatbush zombies live and happily paid door. I paid to see Orville Peck at the pne, microdosed on shrooms. I saw billy idol while on acid at the pne and god was dancing in his logo and she was so cute and i screamed "dyke rock" and billy went offstage and came back in a sheer blouse
I wont list the demos ive been to, or should i try? Ok occupy, fnb'd some maydays, new caledonia land back march, toronto east side tent city lot sit-in, all the sammy yatim stuff/police board hearings, that lil counter-pegida thing at the legi......rising tide stuff a few times incl that oneday thing for (iirc) the g8.....more anti-killercop stuff, missed a landback/oldgrowth blockade kettling in east van while in transit, anti-corporate assimilationism parade-crash avec banner at pride one year...weed marches a few years....it goes on but why would i?

Songs make me feel so close to my drs, particularly my wizarding world dr 🥺
I scripted it's a tradition to sing Caledonia by Dougie Maclean (Amy MacDonald version is my fave) out of the windows of the Hogwarts express as it leaves the station so it makes me think of all my friends and my parents. I also scripted I would wake up to the radio playing This is A Low by Blur, which is my favourite song, so I associate it with my cat who I will finally meet when I wake up there! I associate the song Dirty Old town by the Dubliners with my friends Ardal and Clare because we sing it together in folk club, as well as a couple of folk songs.
The songs that remind me of Rory, my ~potential~ s/o in that reality, are Love Potion no 9 by Tygers of Pan Tang because I scripted she was a metalhead plus I think that song would be popular among wizards, and Fade into You by Mazzy Star because I yearn </3. Also Dreams by The Cranberries ✨
I also can't listen to Love's In Need of Love Today by Stevie Wonder without picturing Marlene McKinnon (well McKiernan in my reality) from my marauders dr.
And America by Simon and Garfunkel and Everybody wants to rule the world by Tears for Fears make me think of all my friends in my PJO dr.
what are some songs you associate with people from your dr?
it can be anybody not just an s/o. the kind of song you have to have on repeat sometimes when u miss them.
its a ceilings by lizzy mcalpine and first time by hozier kind of night for me and missing my s/o’s. missing them so much it hurts.
i also shifted to you are in love (taylor’s version) by taylor swift so that’s one of my unofficial shifting songs.
i’ve also found that having one song or playlist on repeat while i’m shifting significantly helps my progress and embodying who i am to shift so there’s a little motivation for u guys.

Fiebre Tropical

The wind grows heavy on the borderline
Thursday 13th July
The border in question is the strait between Mainland and Yell which I crossed on Wednesday evening, after a calm in some squally weather.
A rainy morning had led to little physical activity other than a journey on foot up to the renovated house that I had admired for two days. No one was there, and no sign of any recent activity. It’s not in as advanced a state as I thought, though the roof has been repaired. It is a superb place to live. To get to it, it is necessary to drive along the beach initially, so at low tide.
On leaving the North Roe peninsula I pulled in at North Collafirth marina to fill up with water. From my experience in Scandinavia last autumn marinas offer useful services, not only for boats, but for campervans as well. Up there, it was necessary to pay to use their facilities on an app, GoMarina, but here it is all done through an honesty box.
There was a shower, and also laundry facilities. Though I didn’t need the latter just yet, with the rain falling, such an opportunity couldn’t be missed. I spent a couple of hours cleaning the interior of the van, and after two hours, emerged refreshed.
Then it was via the Co-Op in Brae to the ferry terminal at Toft for the 20 minute crossing to Yell. Two boats service the crossing, and at this time of year, high season, there’s one every half hour. There’s a charge on the outward journey only, £16 for me, judged as less than 5.5 metres in length, by the crew’s trained eye. I am actually 5.9 metres, and the cost should be £23.
My destination was only 20 minutes from the terminal on Yell, West Sandwick beach, and its carpark, just a few metres from the beach.
We stayed here for two nights, and on the Thursday hiked around the peninsula to the south, the Ness of West Sandwick. This was a 3 hour, 5.5 mile excursion that began on the rugged ocean coast, climbed to the high point of 50 metres, then returned on the leeward side, passing this imposing house that puts me in mind of one of my favourite books, Elspeth Barker’s O Caledonia, in which young Janet suffers a miserable childhood in a strict Scottish Presbyterian household. (In the photo below)
Though I was the only campervan at the parking for two days, a few walkers visited during the days. When I arrived, in heavy rain and wind, there was a couple camped in a tent on the beach. They were from Durham, and in day 27 of a 700 mile hike around Shetland’s coastline. They agreed with me about how much a pain crossing the fences were, but said they had spoken to a few farmers, who had said that it was no problem to cross them, which surprised me. There is access to all of the coastline, but it’s just not very easy walking in a few places.
A couple of very friendly Shetland ponies just next to the beach and my park-up..
A guy originally from Carlisle lived with his terrier in a small house at the top of the road, and was down a few times to chat over the couple of days. There’s a real mix of nationalities amongst the population here, and they are very welcoming. The international feel is enhanced by tourists also; there aren’t very many, but they are from a huge variety of places.
It made this poem even more poignant.. I try not to get political here, but just occasionally something grates..
Paint over Mickey Mouse
Burn Where the Wild Things Are
Pulverise the lego
Set fire to the Christmas tree star.
Seize all the teddies
Bury every skipping rope
Paint the walls dark brown
Abolish all hope.
(Michael Rosen)

Here’s a few that I thought looked of interest..
Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford (his More or Less show for Radio 4 is very good)
Second Captains (sport)
The Evolution of Horror
70 mm - on movies
Local Anaesthetic - weird and funny news
Blank Check - movies
Chart Music - deconstruction on individual Top of the Pops episodes
The History of Rock in 500 Songs
Song Exploder
The Alexei Sayle Podcast
The Rest is Politics - with Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell (latest episode with Fergal Sharkey instead Stewart)
The News Agents
Mystery Show
Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell
Backlisted - giving new life to old books
Ask Any Buddy
Classic Ghost Stories - the story, followed by a deconstruction of it
Slow News
Welcome to Night Vale - a fiction podcast which is a sort of dark humour with a good music soundtrack, I’ve listened to the first three episodes (there are currently about 270) and it’s reeling me in.
Desert Island Dicks - the worst people and the worst things to be stranded on and island with
