Misnomers

I think it's a misnomer to call superhero comics mainstream, in that the only things truly more mainstream than a superhero comic book is the newspaper comic strip. Though it's changing but then again things like Baby Blues, Cathy and the like reach out to mainstream audiences in a way even X-Men couldn't consistently do, not to mention things like DC and Marvel are more like specialty radio stations.

Not so much radio stations that play mainstream music, which newspaper cartoons are more analogous to if you listen to a lot of radio. DC and Marvel are more like specialty radio stations in that they specialise a lot in something, in their case it's mostly superheroes. Having listened to Christian radio stations that sometimes play secular music, they are what DC and Marvel really are. Not because DC and Marvel are religious, but they specialise a lot in something.

This may not always be the case anymore but calling DC and Marvel mainstream doesn't make sense because they specialise a lot in something that appeals to a certain audience, not so much a general audience as it is with most newspaper cartoons. The radio analogy works if you listen to various radio stations for a sustained period of time, but it still makes sense in that newspaper cartoons are like more mainstream radio stations.

DC and Marvel are more like specialty radio stations, they specialise a lot in something. It needn't to be religious nor classical, but they occupy a certain niche and appeal to certain people. (Funny enough, Marvel's owner Disney has a radio network in Latin America called Radio Disney.)

School Dance Vibes - songs I would have heard at homecoming or perhaps the 8th grade dinner-dance, you can probably tell what year I graduated by the aesthetic of this one
