Chapter 3 - Tragedy Strikes
A/N TW: MENTION OF DEATH/LOSS ALCOHOL PHYSICAL VIOLENCE
      Nicks P.O.V
No matter how much I figure out about her there is always more to find out. I feel this is the beginning of a great friendship. I follow her inti the book store and offer her one of my favorite Edgar Allen Poe stories
“Don’t need it, but thank you.”
“Not a fan?”
“Not what I said Darling.”
“Then explain sweetheart?” I whisper near her ear after all we are in a book store library rules apply here too, right?
“I already have his collection in hardback.”
“A woman after my own heart.” I tease causing her to smile for real the first time in weeks. I know her home life is shit Father resents her and is a drunk most days sometimes physical, her mom is in denial trying to reconnect still. After browsing the store a few times over, we leave, and start heading back her house. Her body langue screams anxiety yet she’d never say a word. We turn the bend to her house I look over at her from the corner of my eye seeing her look terrified makes me just want to convince her to come back with me. I’ve seen these looks so many times from Noah I just wish I knew what to say. To both our surprise no yelling is going on.
“Want me to go in with you?” I ask genuinely worried for her safety her mom is a nice lady stupid enough to believe her ex-husband would ever change his ways for anyone. She looks up at me with her hazel eyes shining from the sun light behind me, and smiles her best fake smile.
“I’ll be fine Nikki you worry about everyone too much.” She walks off and leaves me where I stood. Just as I turn to leave a cop car pulls in causing me to freeze and grabs her attention.
“Ms. Freya O’Cleary Smith?”
“I haven’t used smith since I was four, but what can I help you with?”
“Is your mom Eliza O’ Cleary Smith?”
“Yes why?” I see worry in her eyes
“I regret to inform you your mother was in a horrible car crash this morning.”     The tone of the cop isn’t any comfort just as he removes his hat.
“Is she okay?” I slowly start walking towards her when I see the worry turn straight to fear as she looks over at me.
“Miss is there anyone you’d liked me to call?” I knew instantly this wasn’t going to be good.
“Out with it!” she says through gritted teeth
“She was dead on arrival the emts did everything they could. I’m so sorry for your loss.” I run over to her just as she starts to claps nodding to the cop who ask if he can leave the information. She starts crying as I hold her in my arms all she keeps repeating is NO NO NO NO this isn’t happening. My cell rings and it is Noah, I answer really quick and he can hear Freya crying.
“What happened, Nick?”
“I’ll tell you later right now I have to go.”

Yeah I’m leaning more towards that July baecation too after they didn’t get to see each other for 3 months. I really do think they are already engaged and have been for some time cause I just don’t see why Tom wouldn’t have proposed already like the way he talks about her you can tell how smitten he is I mean him saying that she has been integral to the success and happiness of his life and career and then out her talking about getting married and having kids and being a stay at home dad. I just don’t see him not having already proposed when he’s talking like that and Cleary very in love with her and sees her as his future and his endgame I don’t see what would he holding him back, cause it’s not like they have to get married straight away they can have a long engagement, I mean this guy is out here wearing multiple pairs of jeans with her initial hand stitched on the pocket that is a man that is not waiting to propose they have been back together for almost 2 years now and almost 5 years in total and are both 26 now toms not talking like that and not actually proposing. That birthday pic she posted for him I think was from that July weekend and he popped the question then
Yea sooo many things have been sus for a while lol. 👀
Nikki and Claire FINALLY following each other after how many years?? 😅
Kaz saying "Congratulations" on their post 👀
Z feeling way more OPEN about claiming her man
Z's birthday post to Tom
That Baecation in July lollll 👀
Them kissing so much in the car hahaha....
And I agree w/you... I'm sorry, but there's no way that after being together in Atlanta the entire time, and then having that 3-month break from not being able to see each other didn't make Tom think about the future. You can't tell me it didn't. Believe it or not, people get more "clear" on what it is they really truly want when there is DISTANCE. Just saying...
Tumblr media
Anyway, with regards to timing, it's not even so much the TIMING for me. I feel like no matter how long people have dated, they should only get engaged if they feel like it's the right thing for them at this point and time in their life. Now, if you know that you want to get married right now, and a guy is shuffling his feet, then that's a different story. But if you two are perfectly comfortable with the way things are, and you know that you both want to get married to each other in the future, but just don't feel like being engaged for 2-5 years lol, then there's nothing wrong with holding off on an engagement until both of you are ready. So I really don't think it has anything to do with Tom if they aren't engaged yet. I'm sure they've both talked about things and are on the same page. 😊
MY reasons for thinking they could possibly be engaged already is due to some of the little signs I've been picking up on... not necessarily "time". JMHO 🤷

May 2021 Books
Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston
The worldbuilding was stronger than the characters, who (besides the heroine) felt a bit underdeveloped to me, but the story was engaging and I would read the sequel whenever it’s released.
On the Wasteland and Requiem for a Princess by Ruth M. Arthur
These were a find from our children’s section and...I really don’t remember much about them, besides Requiem being a solid if not spectacular example of mid-twentieth-century children’s time-slip fiction.
Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary (reread)
A co-worker brought this one up, and I reread it out of curiosity. My brother borrowed it from a library when we were kids and I read it too, and I was surprised on the reread how much of the wording felt as familiar as if I’d last read it recently. Cleary as ever is brilliant at slice-of-life and capturing children’s concerns on their own terms; this one was well deserving of the Newbery.
Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings by Abi Elphinstone
I love the name Utterly Thankless for a character in a whimsical children’s story, and I wanted to love this book. But it was rather a slog to get through, despite not being overly long. The worldbuilding and plot were over-complicated and the characterization and arcs felt rather paint-by-the-numbers and overly spelled out, even for a children’s book.
Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee
A loose retelling of “The Snow Queen,” I think. And I think I liked it overall? Can’t remember, it’s been too long.
A Clock of Stars: The Shadow Moth by Francesca Gibbons
Maybe a few too many standard fantasy tropes, but the world and characters are fun and charming and I’d like to read the sequel.
Kingfishers Catch Fire and Mr. McFadden’s Hallowe’en by Rumer Godden
Read because my library happened to have them and I wanted to read more Godden. Neither of these are my favorite of hers (Kingfishers is a frustrating read), but they’re effectively written.
Handbook for Dragon Slayers by Merrie Haskell
I enjoyed Haskell’s The Castle behind Thorns, and this was no less delightful. Despite the fantasy elements, the setting is clearly historically medieval, which gives the world depth. And I loved the deconstruction of the trope of the princess who wants to evade her responsibilities to follow her dreams (what she wants is not as idealized as she expects, and her duty and her interests don’t have to be mutually exclusive categories); it’s a lot more nuance than these sorts of books tend to have, and I’m impressed.
The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell
...and then I read this one, and how they could both have been written by the same author is baffling to me. It’s a mixture of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” and the myth of Persephone and Hades, which in theory is interesting and creative but I wasn’t crazy about ***SPOILERS*** the book’s dropping a lot of subplots and supporting characters partway through to concentrate on the twelve-year-old heroine’s romance/marriage with the (adult, not fully human) king of the Underworld, which is portrayed as a good thing. (She ultimately gets sent back home until she’s eighteen and ready to consummate the marriage, and she’s just thrilled about returning to him. o_0)
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Reread for analysis purposes. Thank you to my sister (the one who’s not on Tumblr and thus won’t see this) for loaning me her copy.
Thorn by Intisar Khanani
A retelling of “The Goose Girl” that contrasts interestingly with Shannon Hale’s retelling. This one is definitely for more mature audiences (in terms of weighty themes, not explicit content). A slow, subtle romance and more emphasis on the heroine’s relationships with the people who take her in while she is in disguise.
The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy by Nikki Loftin (reread)
A loose modern retelling of “Hansel and Gretel,” with more emotional depth than expected from a middle-grade book.
Floodpath by Emily B. Martin
A worthy successor to Sunshield. It held my interest throughout and had effective character development (there’s a scene between Veran and his mother that nearly made me cry, which is an accomplishment). I still haven’t entirely warmed to Lark, and not all of the themes really worked for me, but on the whole, very enjoyable and readable.
Smek for President! by Adam Rex (reread)
The first book is a hard act to follow, but this one is still fun.
The Memoirs of Jack Chelwood by Constance Savery
Savery apparently considered this one her best work. I would debate her on that if I could, but it’s certainly the lengthiest and most intricate of what I’ve read of hers.
The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz
A historical fiction book that takes the daring approach of exploring period-accurate prejudice and bias in the heroine. It’s apparently sparked controversy for this, but I appreciated Schlitz’s willingness to be honest about a part of history that would be more pleasant to sanitize. Joan’s navigating the religious differences between herself and her employers and having her preceptions challenged made for an intriguing story. Even if I wasn’t crazy about the romance. But then when am I ever.
Another Lady: A Biography of Constance Savery by Eric Schonblom
I enjoyed getting to know more about Savery. The research was impressively meticulous, though the prose could have been benefited from an editor and a more scholarly tone. I had hoped for more literary analysis of her works, but what was addressed was interesting.
The Mysterious Girl in the Garden by Judith St. George
Time-travel story on the youngest end of middle-grade. Very slight but I would have loved it as a child. It did make me curious about Princess Charlotte Augusta, so I’m going to have to find a biography.
Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St. John
There were excerpts of this book in our elementary school reading texts, but I never had access to the full book as a child. I probably would have enjoyed it more then, but it’s a charming story overall even amid the heavy-handed moralizing. (But I do question the likelihood of characters native to Switzerland, where most Protestants are/were from the Reformed tradition, espousing very evangelical-American Arminian soteriology.)
When Patty Went to College and Just Patty by Jean Webster
Someone on Goodreads described Patty Wyatt as a sort of female Psmith, and they were not wrong. She is a delightfully clever, witty young woman who can talk her way out of just about anything and enjoys messing with people for her own amusement. (Interestingly, she does predate Psmith. Was this sort of character a popular trope of the 1900s?) Webster deconstructs the implications of such a character; Patty’s tendencies do get her into trouble and she experiences remorse. The ending of When Patty Went to College could be interpreted as a disappointing and sudden reformation of her character, but its ambiguity (has she changed or is this another ironic game she’s playing?) saves it.
Just Patty is a fun read, but I enjoyed it less. It’s a prequel, which one would think would require a return to Patty in full Psmith-mode, but she doesn’t quite seem to be the same character--more overtly altruistic, that sort of thing. They’re both worth reading but the first is my favorite.
Also I was very struck by how similar the concerns of college life in 1902 were to those nowadays. Patty and her friends, despite being at a Gilded-Age all-women college, are quite relatable. No one seems to have any issues with them pursuing higher education as women (if a book set in this time and place were written today, it would be very preoccupied with sexism), and romantic interests are present but peripheral and not anyone’s primary concern. Not what one would expect, and rather refreshing.
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (reread)
Reread on a whim, since I’m rewatching In Earnest my emotional support webseries.

Amber Midthunder as Yue
Tumblr media
A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS!
As I was researching more Inuit/First Nation/Native American actors and actresses, I happened to stumble across Amber Midthunder. As much as I love Devery Jacobs, I feel that 23-year-old Amber is much closer to Yue in age and appearance. Especially since my pick for Sokka is only 17-years-old, I’d like Yue’s actress to be as close to his age as possible.
Amber Midthunder is a young actress best known for playing Young Amaya in the film “Not Forgotten” (2009), Lily Stillwater in the TV series “Longmire” (2012-2014), Lana Cleary in the TV series “Banshee” (2014), Swanee Capps in the TV series “Fargo”, Lily Stillwater in the TV series “Longmire” (2012-2014), Nikki in the film “Spare Parts” (2015), Vernon Teller in the film “Hell or High Water” (2016), Maria in the film “Priceless” (2016), Kerry Loudermilk in the TV series “Legion” (2017-2019), Lizzie in the TV series “The Misadventures of Psyche & Me” (2018), Danielle in the film “14 Cameras” (2018), Julie in the film “Only Mine” (2019), and Rosa Ortecho in the TV series “Roswell, New Mexico” (2019-Present).

I just have a couple of Love Nikki questions: 1. How did you come to the conclusion that Nidhoog is a Marxist/Leninist(I actually agree, ftr) 2. What do you think of Louie and what do you think is his Ennagram #? Thanks!
1) Short version: Nidhogg has that BTE (big tankie energy).
Long version: I came to the conclusion that Nidhogg is a Marxist-Leninist by analyzing the lore as well as educating myself on various kinds of leftism (since I am pretty much a communist, anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, and anti-fascist), including Marxist-Leninism, as well as being a history buff in general.
In Love Nikki, it's pretty obvious that Nidhogg was fucked over by both the monarchist/fascist/feudalist regime in the North (probably based off Tsarist Russia) as well as the imperialism from the Apple Fed (aka Miraland's version of 'Murica), Cloud Empire, Pigeon Kingdom (which is clearly Western Europe and/or the British Empire), and possibly Lilith Kingdom (though it's probably nowhere NEAR as imperialistic as Apple, Cloud, or Pigeon are if that is the case) through the policy of the Blood Curse that are mainly of benefit to those four nations rather than North, Wasteland (cleary based off of the Middle East/West Asia, Africa (especially Northern Africa), India, South Asia, and pre-colonized America, all places that experienced absolutely horriffic and violent oppression (like torture, slavery and genocide levels of violent oppression) from the colonization and imperialism from Europe, especially from the British Empire), and Ruin.
So aside from being from a country that from what I am certain has not just a tyrannical king, but also tyrannical warlords vieying for power, much akin to some really fascist monarchy that has a lot of feudalistic traits, and also having to deal with the Blood Curse (which not only mainly benefits Apple, Pigeon, Cloud, and Lilith, which are the places that have the most benefit from the Blood Curse because they are the wealthier and more powerful nations in Miraland, but the elites, monarchs, and wealthy people (basically the ruling class and bourgeoisie) are able to get away with imposing violence, both literal and especially structural violence on just about everyone else), arguably has one of the most fucked up and traumatic backstories in the game, despite being a villain and hated by much of the fandom (especially on tumblr) because of it.
Like, here's a rundown of what happens in his childhood:
His father, who was probably an asshole, emotionally neglected him and put very high expectations on him
Said father ends up getting falsely accused of treason by other warlords and Nidhogg ends up not only becoming homeless, but becomes an orphan and has no family at like 5 years old because of this
Nidhogg is pretty much a homeless, impoverished orphan until he is 13 years old, which by then his teacher (Louie's father) adopts him as a son alongside his own son Louie, who is a year younger than Nidhogg is (basically the first time he's had family since he lost his biological family due to his bio dad falsely being accused of treason) and starts training to be a royal knight
Nidhogg ends up being ostracized by his peers during training despite being very talented and close to Louie and his father (and as someone who grew up being ostracized by many of my peers due to being autistic, that shit fucking hurts)
A coup happens and it ends up being incredibly violent and Nidhogg and Louie end up losing their father to the effects of the Blood Curse, while the people who were behind the coup did not because they had the money to pay for a drug that suppresses the Blood Curse
Like it's pretty obvious that Nidhogg has pretty severe C-PTSD and possibly even a personality disorder due to that fucked up childhood as well as the structural oppression he experienced growing up, which is why Nidhogg is an enneagram 8 (ESTJ 8w7-3w4-5wcp6 sp/so).
And the lore in the Cloud Tea Party welfare event gave us even more evidence that Miraland is a dystopia and an oligarchy (like it is absolute HELL for those who are marginalized, as seen in some of the contestants that Nikki goes against in the Nine-Day War).
And I do think Nidhogg realizes that there is no way in hell you can reform a system that relies on imperialism and oligarchy at all. That the only way to change it is to bring forth revolution. And it is impossible for revolution, ESPECIALLY one that is political in nature to be peaceful and non-violent, thus why Nidhogg ends up starting a war and ends up killing Lunar in the process.
2) Louie is pretty hot (though I do think Niddy is a bit hotter imo) and is kinda relatable, and I could probably see him as an anarchist/anarcho-communist type. As for MBTI and Enneagram, I think he is probably either an ISFP or INFJ 1w2-4w5-cp6w7 so/sp.
