Mayfair’s Christmas Tree and Lights Switch-On Party
The Mayfair Christmas lights switch-on party was the busiest it’s ever been 🎄
Hundreds flocked to see British designer Rachel Whiteread turn on her Connaught Christmas tree lights and the pretty blue bows on Mount Street.
Bamford had music, drinks, nibbles, goody bags and talented illustrator Alice Nyong.
Eskandar hosted ballet performances of The Nutcracker.
Huge queues formed in Mount Street for free food and drink from Maison Rabih Kayrouz, Christian Louboutin and Hideaway restaurant whilst at the wooden chalets they bought gifts and more libations from the likes of Mr Fogg’s and Roebuck Estates 🍸
Florist Neill Strain designed a decadent wreath where elves were ready for selfies and The Connaught were giving out their delicious treats.
Then it was time to head to Matches where fashionistas gathered for Johnnie Walker cocktails, and upstairs metallic manicures by Ruuby and piercings by Otiumberg 💅 Designer brand Raey had exclusive handmade Christmas Baubles too!
Rachel Whiteread’s Connaught tree design is to encourage Londoners to celebrate a feeling of togetherness and circles of positive brightness throughout the festive season.
Will you be visiting the tree this year?

QCQ: Cocrete Blonde
Q: “These assumptions (about architectural representation) are: that space is continuous; that it can be divided into three homogeneous dimensions; that what matters is not the space itself, but its boundaries; and that it is experienced in a linear manner, with respect to time. House reveals and questions some of these assumptions, by representing space not as a conceptual abstraction, but as a synaesthetic experience.”
C: Synaesthetic: psychol the subjective sensation of a sense other than the one being stimulated. For example, a sound may evoke sensations of colour. Professor Scicluna said to me last week, “the space between art pieces is just as important as the artwork itself.” Rachel Whiteread’s House and the article Concrete Blonde: A Probe into Negative Space where Mysteries are Created by Joanna Merwood not only emphasizes the beauty that lies in the space in-between objects but also how this space can serve as a medium itself. Even more fascinating to me is the idea that this space of “nothing” is full of magic that can invigorate the imagination. The space between things are containers of untold stories, experience, the overlooked micro world and the supernatural.
Q: What are some ignored voids among us that hold wonder and beauty?

Inspiration: Rachel Whiteread Drawings
The images above are all drawings by artist Rachel Whiteread. Though primarily known as a sculptor, Whiteread using drawings as a vital way to move forward her ideas.
She says of drawing:
“They are a more discrete part of my practice. They help me work out what it is that I’m doing. The drawings are a way of finding my way through something. They are a way of thinking. If I get stuck in an uncomfortable place with the work, drawing lets me worry through until the work is resolved or moved on.”
Here is a link to a video where Whiteread talks more about her drawing practice.
