hey just thinking about how adam's aunt sasha teaches him how to say the shabbat prayers when his parents aren't around and how he apparently went to at least one of those hidden shabbat services when he was serving in saudi arabia and how we never really know his views on g-d but maybe he starts to think of rao as a g-d of sorts by the end and how his jewishness (and the wrestling with both questions and ritual within it) is just so intrinsically part of the character during the good, bad and ugly of his life

Having a Miserable Winter? Go for a Walk
Getting your daily steps is the perfect winter activity, now more than ever
The positivity we feel during or after a walk, no matter the weather, isn’t happenstance. Rather, it’s the result of how our brains respond to natural environments, including tiny pockets of urban green space, and how we process information accumulated at a pedestrian four to six kilometres per hour. When I was in that ravine, the sunlight filtering through the barren trees, the rocks whirring across the ice and the crows flying overhead held my focus in an effortless way. This “soft fascination,” a term coined by American environmental psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, bestows a sense of serenity, and at the same time, it frees your mind to reflect on your surroundings and explore other thoughts.

Holiday Humors: Romance Recs
The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer
Oy! to the world Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach. But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg. Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.
The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox
All they want for Christmas is a different life. When chef Charlie Goodwin gets hit on the head on the L.A. set of her reality baking show, she loses a lot more than consciousness; she also loses her ability to taste and smell--both critical to her success as show judge. Meanwhile, Charlie's identical twin, Cass, is frantically trying to hold her own life together back in their quaint mountain hometown while running the family's bustling bakery and dealing with her ex, who won't get the memo that they're over. With only days until Christmas, a desperate Charlie asks Cass to do something they haven't done since they were kids: switch places. Looking for her own escape from reality, Cass agrees. But temporarily trading lives proves more complicated than they imagined, especially when rugged firefighter Jake Greenman and gorgeous physician's assistant Miguel Rodriguez are thrown into the mix. Will the twins' identity swap be a recipe for disaster, or does it have all the right ingredients for getting their lives back on track?
A Holly Jolly Diwali by Sonya Lalli
One type-A data analyst discovers her free-spirited side on an impulsive journey from bustling Mumbai to the gorgeous beaches of Goa and finds love waiting for her on Christmas morning. Twenty-nine-year-old Niki Randhawa has always made practical decisions. Despite her love for music and art, she became an analyst for the stability. She's always stuck close to home, in case her family needed her. And she's always dated guys that seem good on paper, rather than the ones who give her butterflies. When she's laid off, Niki realizes that practical hasn't exactly paid off for her. So for the first time ever, she throws caution to the wind and books a last-minute flight for her friend Diya's wedding. Niki arrives in India just in time to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, where she meets London musician Sameer Mukherji. Maybe it's the splendor of Mumbai or the magic of the holiday season, but Niki is immediately drawn to Sam. At the wedding, the champagne flows and their flirtatious banter makes it clear that the attraction is mutual. When Niki and Sam join Diya, her husband and their friends on a group honeymoon, their connection grows deeper. Free-spirited Sam helps Niki get in touch with her passionate and creative side, and with her Indian roots. When she gets a new job offer back home, Niki must decide what she wants out of the next chapter of her life--to cling to the straight and narrow like always, or to take a leap of faith and live the kind of bold life the old Niki never would have dreamed of.
It Started with a Dog by Julia London
All Harper Thompson wants for Christmas is the huge promotion she's worked so hard for--which she should get, as long as her launch of the hip new coffeehouse, Deja Brew, goes according to plan. Jonah Rogers is trying to save his family's coffee shop, Lucky Star, from going out of business, which will be tough with the brand-new Deja Brew opening across the street. When Jonah and Harper meet for the first time after accidentally swapping phones, their chemistry is as electric as a strand of Christmas lights. He's a tall, handsome, compassionate hunk of engineer, and she's an entrepreneur whose zest for life is very sexy. They love all the same things, like scary movies, greasy food--and most of all, dogs. It's a match made in heaven...until Jonah finds out that Harper's the one about to put him out of business. Only one coffee shop likely can survive, and a competition of one-upmanship ensues in a battle of the brews. The paws really come out when the local rescue shelter has a fundraiser where local businesses foster dogs, and patrons vote with their dollars for their favorite pup. Harper takes in an adorable old bulldog on behalf of Deja Brew, while Jonah fosters a perky three-legged dachshund for Lucky Star. As the excitement builds for who will be crowned King Mutt and king of the coffee hill, Harper and Jonah must decide if their connection was all steam or if they are the perfect blend.

Review:
Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is hiding a secret, she absolutely loves Christmas. She’s hidden it from her Jewish community and has even built a career as a Christmas romance novelist. However despite the love she writes about her chronic illness has kept her from trying to get it. But when her publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance Rachel decides the best way to find her muse is to go to the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah. Too bad for her its being run buy her childhood first love and summer camp archenemy- Jacob Greenburg, the boy who tormented her and broke her heart. Jacob is a famous party planner, he’s rich, handsome, and has a lot of abandonment issues. On one hand he’s excited to see the girl who broke his heart again on the other he’s afraid to find out why she stood him up at the summer camp dance and ghosted him. Rachel needs a ticket to the ball and Jacob will only give her one if she does volunteer work for it, which means they’re going to be spending a lot of time together. While Jacob tries to win back the girl he’s in love with, Rachel can’t wait to get away from the boy who’s tormented her. Two people, one big misunderstanding, and secrets that could threaten to break up this new relationship. There were some major issues with the book.. such as comparing coming out to your family being as serious as admitting you like Christmas... seriously?? and then there was the joking about being an assassin for the IOF/Mossad is not funny, when the people she "killed" were most likely Palestinians... and then if we are talking about the romance in general, I just didn’t feel it working between these two people, and seriously Jacob??? You’re going to get mad at her over her book, after essentially hounding her, humiliating her, and then not even giving her time to explain? Overall, this one didn’t work for me.

( RONEN RUBENSTEIN. TWENTY NINE. CIS MALE. HE/HIM. ) in texas, LUCAS ABELMAN is more commonly known as LUKE. they’ve been living in NEWTON for her whole life and currently HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER. some say they are PICKY & FLAKY but i’m more inclined to believe those that say they’re INTUITIVE & CREATIVE. if you walk by their house, you can sometimes hear FIGHT SONG by RACHEL PLATTEN playing from their window. ( STACKS OF PAPERS ON A WOODEN DESK, EMPTY COFFEE CUPS, TUGGING A NECK TIE LOOSE AFTER A LONG DAY. )
BASIC INFORMATION
FULL NAME: lucas terrance abelman
NICKNAME(S): lucas, luke
AGE: twenty nine
DATE OF BIRTH: february eighteenth
HOMETOWN: houston, tx
CURRENT LOCATION: newton
GENDER: cis male
PRONOUNS: he/him
ORIENTATION: gay
OCCUPATION: high school math teacher
tw death & homophobia.
lucas was born to a conservative family, they were by the book and followed the rules. he was always a good kid, and into his teens. he never had any issues with how ‘strict’ his parents may have seemed to others. it was fine with him, he saw no reason to break rules anyway. he was a good student, honour roll and everything. he got along really well with his older sister (by six years), beth and they were best friends.
when lucas was around thirteen, his mother caught him kissing their neighbour’s son. while she entirely disapproved, she kept it a secret between the two of them. (little did she know, beth definitely already knew her little brother’s sexuality, she was the first and only person he really told. their bond was hella strong).
it stayed a secret until he was sixteen, and it happened again. he and the boy next door shared another moment but this time it wasn’t swept under the rug. his father was involved and he didn’t have his sister for back up because she had moved out for college (and then for work) just before his birthday. needless to say, his parents were not welcoming nor warm about this and without much hesitation, lucas was kicked out from the family home.
he called his sister who, of course, welcomed him with open arms into her home in straton county, where she was training to become an emt. he finished off high school there, and then proceeded to stick around for university. he became a high school math teacher, having always wanted to be a teacher of any sorts, and his nerdy ass is good with numbers.
beth ended up having a daughter with her boyfriend at the time. of course, as the pregnancy progressed, he was nowhere to be found so lucas helped out the best he could. his niece was named grace, and lucas adores the little girl.
grace was three when beth got into a car accident. to some (but not much) surprise, lucas was named legal guardian of the little girl in beth’s will should anything ever happen to his sister. he kept beth’s house, not wanting to completely disrupt grace’s life more than it already was, so she didn’t have to be moved somewhere else and he is now raising her.
he is a shy, nerdy, struggling math teacher. really just trying his best for grace and beth’s sake. kind of a ball of anxiety, probably has a few goldfish or fruitloops stuck to his clothes most of the time. fridge is covered in crayon art pieces. the little girl is his entire world.
