UnReal is a show about moral ambiguousness and how our trauma define who we are but also how they can turn into just an excuse for shitty behaviour. It's about choosing to be a better person, it's about redemption and relapse, it's about self-destruction, and internalized misogyny, it's about toxic relationships and co-dependance, it's about unconditional love and self-loathing, it's about substitute parenthood, it's about who we are and who we want to be, it's about what we can change about ourselves and what we cannot.

In that regard 4x07 was a masterpiece, it feels like everything from season one has built up to this episode, to the moment Noelle tells Rachel "And maybe that is the reason you act the way you do, or maybe it's just a convenient excuse." which is kind of the whole point of the show, it's building to the moment Chet tells Quinn "Rachel will come back to you." and she says "And what if she doesn't?" because that's the moment Quinn half-admits Rachel is worth more than a life with Chet and the baby. Rachel losing strands of hair throughout the episode was such a beautiful symbol of how deep she is on her path of self-destruction, and how everything is starting to fall apart, (also the parallel with Quinn choosing to leave and change?? Hello??) and to start and end the episode with the same song but with two radically different moods, and the final lyrics "This surely is a dream / This must be my dream" with Rachel looking at the camera and telling us exactly that, I--

I don't know man, this show is a freaking masterpiece, that's all I'm saying

the thing is about season three, is that rachel really did think that she pulled herself onto the right track in the beginning. in a way –– she had. she'd been away from everlasting and quinn, so she hadn't been in the situation where she'd had to be manipulative. the issue is, she learned all of her tricks from quinn. so when quinn turned up begging for her to come back, she couldn't see that it was the same sort of manipulation tactic she'd used so many times before. it felt genuine. her mistake was going back to set. she tried to stick with her program, of being honest and not manipulative like she was, but you can see it almost infecting her being around the contestants. you can see the need to be that person, to be the "dragon" consuming her completely and utterly even from just two or three episodes in. i'm still not convinced that she wanted to heal. i think if she really did, she never would have returned to everlasting at all. she wanted to please quinn, she always has done. and she knows it's what gets her the praise she so craves (which is a whole different conversation). she'd deluded herself in the same way she deludes the people around her, and it shattered far quickly than it had taken her to build it. it says a lot.

So I saw gifsets of Shira x Hannah from Harlan Coben's Shelter here on tumblr, and of course I ended up watching the show just for them (it was good though the last ep did disappoint me a bit), and of course I got fixated on Constance Zimmer because HOW could I NOT, so I started going through her other stuff (you know how it goes) and I started with Unreal, and it so happens that that show is BUILT ON the relationship between her character Quinn King and another named Rachel Goldberg and there's A TON of subtext between those two and now I'm discovering a whole new wlw ship and fandom around a show that's ended years ago and I'm just so happy because it's exactly the content I love the most and at the same time I'm sad because I already know how much I'm gonna miss them once I'm done and it's just like How does this keep happening to me???!
